Spectember 2024 Day 27: Goliath Macaw
With a head-to-body length of 145-150 cm, a weight of 5 kg, and a wingspan of over 3.2 meters, the highly-social Goliath Macaw is the largest species of the Potworian parrot genus Neoara and one of the largest flying birds ever to inhabit Potworia's far southwestern continent of Svarogia. It lives in dense tropical rainforests where it uses its powerful, hooked beak and talons to feed upon the fruits, nuts, flowers, seeds and nectar produced by gigantic relatives of fabacae and other flowering plants and trees, and it will also fly after riverbanks in large flocks to consume clay or other mineral nutrients that aid the macaw in digesting potentially poisonous plants. The Goliath Macaw shares its habitat with other kinds of endemic Svarogian birds such as hummingbird-like passerines, hornbill-like toucans, omnivorous woodpeckers, and a several smaller species of parrot or macaw. Like most other macaws of the genus Neoara, The females of these monogamous birds lay two or three eggs inside the hole of a tree shortly before the breeding season ends. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs for 35 days, and the rat-sized chicks will soon fledge from the nest in about 100 days from the time they hatch.

The World’s Largest Wetland Is Burning, and Rare Animals Are Dying. (New York Times)
Excerpt from this New York Times story:
Two jaguar cubs burned to death, their small bodies carbonized. Tapirs with raw, bloodied paws had been scalded by smoldering cinders. Nests of unhatched eggs from rare parrots were consumed by flames as tall as trees.
Wildfires are laying waste to Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland and one of the most important biodiversity sanctuaries on the planet.
And the blazes, the worst on record since Brazil started tracking fires in 1998, are taking a deadly toll on wild animals, including at-risk species that scientists have been working for decades to protect.
“We’re watching the biodiversity of the Pantanal disappear into ash,” said Gustavo Figueirôa, a biologist working for SOS Pantanal, a conservation nonprofit. “It’s being burned to a crisp.”
The Pantanal is a maze of rivers, forests and marshlands that sprawl over 68,000 square miles, an area 20 times the size of the Everglades. About 80 percent lies within Brazil, with the rest in Bolivia and Paraguay.
Usually flooded for much of the year, the Pantanal in recent years has been parched by a string of severe droughts that scientists have linked to deforestation and climate change.
Since the start of the year, wildfires have burned over 7,000 square miles, an area the size of New Jersey, in Brazil’s share of the Pantanal.
The wetlands, parts of which are on UNESCO’s list of heritage sites because of their rich biodiversity, are home to the world’s biggest parrot, the highest concentration of caimans and threatened wildlife like the giant otter.
They also harbor animals that have evolved in ways distinctive from others in their species, like larger jaguars that dive into flooded plains to fish for food.
Researchers have counted at least 4,700 plant and animal species in the Pantanal, though they say many more have yet to be discovered by scientists.
“There’s so much we still don’t know,” said Luciana Leite, a biologist and a climate campaigner for the Environmental Justice Foundation. “It’s such a special region.”
But the wildfires, fanned by strong winds and searing temperatures, are threatening this natural laboratory, killing or injuring giant anteaters, lowland tapirs, marsh deer, hyacinth macaws and caimans.

The Realm Walker Rito Cheat Sheet
Here's some details on all the Rito characters in my LoZ fanfic, The Realm Walker. First a screenshot of the table I use to keep track of names I've already used.
So yeah that's a lotta Rito! You may noticed the one name not in one of the neat columns. Gizli is genderfluid, any pronouns (though prefers they/them).
Now before I go any further, I'm going to link to some older posts of mine. This one about Rito Tribes. And this second one expanding on the first one with new information from TotK. You may be wondering what I'm talking about with "Rito Tribes", put simply the Rito are a collection of closely related species. For example most of the Rito NPC's in BotW/TotK fall under the Orni Tribe, while Kass belongs to the Arini Tribe, and Teba the Accipi Tribe.
Now for the next part, Family Trees! You may notice that one "canon adjacent" name in green... Well...
LoZ: The Wind Waker! Komali's father the Rito Chieftain is never named, so I gave him a name! The Tale of the Realm Walker takes place 20 years after WW, so by this time Komali is Chieftain and has married Medli and they have two kids.
Now I'm retconing the WW Rito into full birbs, BUT keeping the "arms transforming into wings" aspect. So for funzies Komali is an owl-like Rito (like Kaneli, the Bubo Tribe), while Medli is Orni Tribe. They're kids are both owl like (with their son Nass inheriting his mother's white plumage so he looks like a little snowy owl).
Rinal here is the main Rito character of TTotRW, he's a member of the Cristatta (Cris-tat-ta) Tribe, which is Revali's Tribe. (Which coincidentally make's Quill's hairdo into a floofy crest.)
Tasin and Salli are two more TTotRW OC's. Tasin is the Healer and is Accipi Tribe, while Salli is the Loresinger and is Arini Tribe (mostly based on a scarlet macaw). Now because Accipi traits (eagle/hawk beak) are passed down by the man's line while Arini traits (parrot face) are passed down by the woman's line, their kids randomly look like either parent. (For example Kuli looks like his father, but does have an Arini like crest, while Kalini takes after her mother.)
[I will point out that Kass' daughters will eventually have larger than usual chests, as they've inherited stronger flight muscles from him, even though they'll otherwise look like their mother. Arini Rito constantly flap their wings in flight, that's why his chest is so big by the way.]
Mirna was the 1st Rito Champion/Original Pilot of Vah Medoh, she was an Accipi Rito based on a Harpy Eagle. She was 7ft tall (taller than Teba BTW) and wielded a 6ft long, single edged battleaxe. Her husband Tulini was at least a foot shorter than her and an engineer who worked on Vah Medoh. Her sister was a healer. Their son Kalin became a Warrior (like his mother) and their daughter became a healer like her aunt. (We'll get to Yuli in a minute.)
Revali's family, his mother Miida was Loresinger and his father Rivel was a Warrior. Revali gets his darker plumage from his mother as well as the red spots on his face. (He had lighter spots as a fledgling, then lost them as a juvenile, the gained red ones as an adult. He's 20 by the time he becomes Champion, Link is 18.) Rivel's plumage color is close to Kass'.
Yuli is Accipi Tribe, based on an ornate hawk-eagle, his wife Mai (Falco Tribe) is based on both color morphs of the red-necked falcon. Now we have to talk a bit about Rito reproduction... Rito females are fertile during set periods throughout the year (varies with individual, no mating season or heat/estrus cycles) and during this time if they mate they'll lay an egg. For a limited window after laying an egg they will still be fertile and if they mate again, they'll lay another egg (after a day or so). [This idea comes from the Wikipedia page on Barn Owls, I read it and had a revelation on Kass' family...]
So in this case, Yuli and Mai had two kids in their first brood and the remaining broods were all one egg each. And you can tell that Yuli is descended from Mirna because of his brown eyes (very, very rare for Rito).
Revali's family and Yuli's family will be brought up in future stories.
Oh boy, here's the big one. [UB = Unnamed Brother, US = Unnamed Sister, and UE = Unhatched Egg] Kass' father Kazli is even more blue and gold macaw than he is (and by that I mean that he's got a green patch on his forehead.) Valini is a darker shade of blue (back) while her underside is a lighter shade of blue, the white around her eyes is slightly yellow, and she's got some green on the tips of her wings. Kalia also has the green forehead patch BTW.
Little fun fact about the Arini Tribe, they've got this custom where they mark their faces with circles and lines. The circles represent one's career (Kazli and Kalia have bright red circles cause they're warriors, Valini's circle is green cause she makes pottery). The lines are alternating black and white and represent: one's self, one's spouse, and their children listed by age. So looking at this, you can imagine that Kazli and Valini's lines are about the circle completely around their eyes. (That's right I said it, Kass' markings are facepaint.) [They're not gonna add lines until the eggs hatch BTW.]
So Kalia is eldest child cause she hatched first (by a couple minutes). Also Kass and Kalia are rare examples of Rito "twins" when a woman lays two eggs at a time instead of just one. It's tradition in Kass' hometown of Takandi Village that the eldest children follow in their parent's wingbeats. However he had no interest in becoming a warrior and Kalia had no desire to make pottery. (Their parents were fine with it, other villagers not so much. But they wouldn't dare say anything in front of Kazli...)
I lumped Kass' daughters together cause A) I was out of room, and B) they were all in the same brood. (I shan't explain the implications, but I will say that Cree and Kheel were "twins".)
Virli is Kalia's consort, like Kalia she's a warrior (although she's an archer while Kalia is a spearfighter like her father). She's a member of the Cristatta Tribe, but as a woman of the Tribe she lacks Revali's cheek tuffs and her crest is half as short (she also doesn't have the side loop braids, or any side braids). Her plumage is red-orange, and she typically braids her pluma ("hair") into a single braid that branches into four at the end like a fancy birb's tail feathers, earning her the pet name "my little phoenix" from Kalia. She's also very fond of butterflies and Great Valoo help you if you try to use one in an elixir! (She's part of a Rito religious group known as the Viskin, who basically worship dragons.)
[Kalia's parents don't know she's with Virli yet, it's a source of tension between the two of them. It doesn't help that they're also in a long distance relationship.]
So Rinili was just a little puffball when Harli found him stuffed in a barrel at an abandoned Rito lumber camp, his parent's bodies ripped apart by beasts... She and her wife Milini adopted him. He calls Harli "Ma" and Milini "Mum". Harli used to be First Warrior of Kariki Village, until an injury left her unable to fight. (She took an arrow in the wing, it got infected and now she can't fire a bow or wield a blade properly. She wears a leather brace on her right wing.)
Taslin is one of the couriers for Kariki Village, and he's the biological father of Harli and Milini's daughters. (Yes Rinili views them as his sisters...)
Aside from Rinili's biological parents and Rinili himself, they're all Orni Tribe. Rinili's plumage is mostly midnight blue, finger/wingtips are powder blue, white, then midnight blue. His legs and belly are also powder blue with several white bands on his legs (like Saki). Also like Saki, he has a bright yellow patch on his breast. Below his ribs and wrapping around to his back is a zigzagged silvery-gray line pointing down at the front and back and up at the sides. There's also silvery-gray arrow head shaped mottling on his back.
He has a pluma like Harth's comb over but braided (green ribbons, yellow beads) and lacking the part on the back of his head. He's got a crest like peafowl. The braids on the side of his head have red beads with grey crescent moon ornaments at the tip. His armor more or less looks like the Rito Captains in HWAoC. But his most distinguishing feature are the four long, thin ornamental tail feathers with wide tips, complete with eye spots. (Tail feathers are based loosely on the marvelous spatuletail, they curve up so they don't drag the ground and it takes a lot of concentration to keep them from flailing all over the place.)
He's a warrior, specifically Ryski (Rye-ski) Brigade [might rename that second bit], which is more or less a Rito Special Ops type deal. The term is poorly translated into "scout" in Hylian, but scouting is only part of what they do. They're primarily stealth fighters, which is why there are a lot of Bubo Rito in the Ryski ranks. [This is where I point out that Kalia is the reverse, a Karikos (Ka-re-kos) often poorly translated to "footsoldier" it's more like a knight really, or maybe comparable to mounted cavalry given the Rito's mobility? (but without the mounts?). There's a lot of poor translation of Rito words going on BTW.] Oh and he also has green eyes, but not the same shade as Revali's or Harth's (I compare them to emeralds and so Rinili would be jade green.)

-My theriotype doesn't effect how I dress very much. I do prefer looser fitting clothes with pockets I can tuck my hands into, which feels similar to how birds fold their wings over their backs. I sometimes style my hair in a way that mimics parrot cheek feathers or a small high ponytail to mimic a crest.
-The previous prompt continues into the gear prompt as I prefer subtle gear that can pass as regular clothes and accessories. I have a variety of grey sweaters and light jackets, as well as some light, comfortable grey pants.
I have a good variety of bracelets I use to represent a bird leg bands. Most of them are leather, they are wider and more rigid than something fabric/elastic or braided string. I might get a metal one if it has a nice pattern but I don't want a plastic one. I don't currently have any that fit around my ankle like a proper leg band.
I've got some fabric masks for cold outdoor walks with a feather pattern and another with a beak-like texture. A big plaster egg from the craft store to help with any spring nesting urges. Specifically plaster, not hollow plastic. It has a more realistic weight. I repainted a macaw figure to look like a female cockatiel, if that counts as gear.
-My home area isn't nearly as dry as a wild cockatiel's habitat but there are a few bodies of water within reasonable distance. My "territory" has a pond and plenty of trees so that's close enough for me. I would like to visit Australia some day, both for travel and to see some wild cockatiels, but I don't think I want to live there. I'm content with the climate I grew up in.

Amazon: Monkey Island/Animal Sanctuary
I was starving by the time lunch was ready at 1:30pm - golden catfish with rice and peppers which was pretty tasty. After lunch I went for a little siesta for an hour and then regrouped with Rodrigo and the Puerto Rican family (minus the mother) and we took the boat out to spot some birds and dolphins. There were glimpses of dolphins but I was always too slow to get a good look at them, and when I did see one pop up it always looked grey - they get more pink the more active they are. There was a massive deerfly (dragonfly/horsefly type creature) that landed on papa’s leg and was smacked off him by Rodrigo! We arrived shortly after at Monkey Island, guess what was in store for us there? A little capuchin monkey was waiting at the dock for the boat to get close enough to where it could jump aboard and check for snacks. The family bought some guava fruit from the owners of the island and then some big hefty boys climbed down from the trees and climbed onto papa’s shoulder to sit there and eat their fruit. The girls also took turns holding the monkeys and feeding them fruit but they were quite big and intimidating so I didn’t want to have it climb on me. I wouldn’t have minded one of the smaller capuchins on my shoulder but they weren’t so friendly and kept a bit of a distance. There was also a tiny malnourished puppy on the island and it seemed like the monkeys tormented him. They’d run up when he back was turned and grab his legs, or smack his head, and then run away when he turned around. The boat driver was laughing and joined in with the torment, touching the dog’s back when he was looking at the monkey. The boat got a bit stuck on the island so the owners helped us push off back into the river and we continued down to San Juan de Huashalado village where we visited an animal rescue sanctuary. A young guide took us around to show us the parrots, macaw, sloths, matamata swamp turtle, caiman, and boa constrictor. He encouraged us to all hold the caiman and the sloth and pose for a photo. I did these and felt guilty about it but I could barely take any other photos as I was being completely eaten alive by mosquitos in this humid swampy area even though Rodrigo had bought me an emergency repellent packet from a small shop to try and stop them. We hopped back in the boat and I was glad for the breeze blowing the mosquitos away from me, we stopped at the pink dolphin viewing area again and the girls and papa went for a swim. I stayed in the boat not wanting to swim in this dirty water or get my clothes dirty since I didn’t have too many things remaining clean for this hot weather. Rodrigo set all of our minds at ease (at least it was after the swim) about the piranha-ridden water and told us about when he was 10 years old and had his nail chomped off by a piranha. The people on the other boat stopped there were detailing stories of river fish swimming inside people’s bodies and eating them from the inside out. I was glad I didn’t swim! This time of the day was better for the dolphins being active and I was able to see some that had a pink belly as they dived out of the water. On our way back to the camp, Rodrigo pointed out the markings on the trees where the water level had been about 2m higher in the rainy season a month prior. The water was getting much more shallow and our boat actually wasn’t able to make it all the way in so we stopped at another bank where the water was high enough to get us close enough to clamber out onto a bridge. I took a shower and was feeling very refreshed for about 20 minutes before Rodrigo, the girls, and I headed out with our boots and flashlights into the humidity and darkness. We walked the same path as earlier and it was a totally different experience. We saw spiders, tarantulas, frogs, fireflies, and some birds asleep up in a tree – luckily no snakes! When we got back, a chicken and pineapple dish over rice with egg was waiting, there was also a picked over salad that I could take a few pieces of lettuce from, and an empty plate that had once offered up slices of pineapple.

Introduction to Parrot Farms
Parrot farms are specialized facilities where parrots are bred, raised, and cared for in captivity. These farms play a crucial role in the conservation and preservation of various parrot species, many of which are threatened or endangered in the wild. The primary goal of parrot farms is to ensure the well-being of the birds and to promote responsible breeding practices to maintain healthy populations of these colorful and intelligent birds.
Parrot farms often house a variety of species, from small parakeets to large macaws. The facilities are designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the birds, with spacious aviaries, enrichment activities toco toucan eggs for sale, and proper nutrition plans. Many parrot farms also work closely with conservation organizations to contribute to research and conservation efforts for endangered parrot species.
In this article series, we will explore the world of parrot farms, discussing their importance, the challenges they face, and the fascinating aspects of caring for these magnificent birds.

crystal NOT in nagasaki, singapore: part five
Hello again! We've finally reached the final part of my time in Singapore. After this post, I'll talk next about the few days I spent in Thailand before returning to my home in Japan. Please look forward to it!
On my ninth day in Singapore, I was able to explore a bit of Singapore's Chinatown and Little India. As I mentioned previously, there are many different ethnic groups living in Singapore, including Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Muslim people. We saw some of Singapore's Middle Eastern and Muslim culture on Arab Street, and now we were able to explore more of the Chinese and Indian culture in Singapore.
In Chinatown we explored some souvenir shops, where I searched a bit desperately for novelty/authentic mahjong sets, but unfortunately wasn't able to find any. We also were able to see the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a temple for Chinese Buddhism. It was very grand and ornately decorated. I particularly loved looking at the beautiful tapestry behind the Buddha woven with gold thread. The temple was very similar to many temples I've seen in Japan, and it was interesting to look for the differences between Japanese and Chinese Buddhism.
After this, we spent some time walking around Little India. There were some very beautiful cultural murals painted on the buildings.
We also went shopping at a huge mall in Little India called Mustafa Centre. It had TONS of really cheap foods and souvenirs. I felt like I walked forever and there were still more and more aisles of various foods laid before me. It was heaven.
In the evening, we returned to my friend's home to rest and eat another homemade dinner with her family. Our trip in Singapore was coming to an end and it was incredibly fun but tiring, so it was nice to take a quiet rest for the night.
On my final day in Singapore, one friend and I broke off from the group to go to Bird Paradise, an entire zoo park near Singapore Zoo and Night Safari dedicated to the various bird species of the world. Each section was separated by continent or region, so we got to have a world tour of many kinds of exotic birds!
We started in Antarctica, where there was an indoor penguin tank.
Next we walked through the Australian section. I don't know much about the types of birds we saw, but here's some pictures I took.
I was also able to see a real kookaburra! They're much bigger than I thought, and very round.
Since the tropical temperature in Singapore is very hot and humid, there were small air-conditioned buildings separating each of the sections. These buildings usually had small educational exhibits and diagrams about the birds that you could look at while you rested in the cool air. In one of the buildings there were beanbags all across the floor and giant screens showing bird mating dance documentary footage. It was so funny and cool.
In another building, you could rest on benches shaped like birds' beaks, which we had a lot of fun with.
And these giant eggs:
Anyway, I don't remember what region they're from, but enjoy these other pictures of birds I saw.
At the far back of the park we reached the African section, which had flamingos and beautiful macaws. They were so colorful and much larger than I thought they would be! I tried to take a picture with one of them that was waddling around on the path to show their size, but it's still hard to really understand from the picture just how massive they were.
They also held an educational bird show at a large amphitheater in the park. We got to hear a parrot sing happy birthday and witness a beautiful great hornbill fly across the arena. For the show's finale, they released a bunch of the birds into the center of the amphitheater and it was so chaotic and fun.
After that, we finished up at Bird Paradise and went out in search of lunch. We decided to try Jollibee, a Filipino fast food restaurant specializing in fried chicken. I originally thought that this shop only existed in Singapore, but they actually have shops across Asia, with shops even in Canada, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Italy! My Filipino friend in Japan told me that Jollibee is one of the only fast food chains in the world that outperforms McDonald's in their native country.
Since I have a Filipino friend in Japan and my partner is American Filipino, I had been interested in trying it while I'm in Asia and it was really good! A distinct part of the meal that makes it so loved by Filipino people is that it comes with rice as a side, which is wrapped in paper to the left of the chicken. Thank you Philippines for making such a delicious fast food chain <3
At the end of the day, we met back up with all of our friends, new and old, and enjoyed some drinks at a bar. I was surprised to find that drinks in Singapore are pretty expensive, and public consumption of alcohol is banned after midnight! So the drinking culture in Singapore is fairly reserved. As someone who enjoys a few social drinks and an early bedtime, I was completely happy with this.
I ordered Singapore's signature drink, the Singapore sling, made from gin, cherry liqueur, Cointreau, Benedictine, pineapple juice, lime juice, grenadine syrup, and Angostura bitters. If I remember correctly, it cost something like $17 which was kind of crazy, but it was really tasty. According to Wikipedia, it was created by a Chinese bartender at the Raffles Hotel around 1915. I didn't order my drink there, but the Raffles Hotel still stands today, and is still famous for their Singapore slings, which draws in many tourists each year. Apparently they sell 800-1200 Singapore slings every day, and the drink makes up about 70% of the bar's total revenue!
After a night of fun and delicious drinks, we headed to my friend's home on our last night in Singapore content and a little tipsy. The next morning we headed to the airport bright and early to catch our flights to Thailand, the next part of our adventure!
We've finally made it to the end of my time in Singapore, after five long parts. Thank you for sticking with me through all of my long posts. <3
I'm so so grateful to Chrystal's family for not only allowing me to stay in their home, but showing me around, feeding me delicious food, and overall taking very good care of me. It meant so much to me and made this one of the most memorable and fun trips of my entire life. I'm forever grateful to have been accepted into their family for this short time.
Finally in the next part, I'll talk about the few days I spent in Thailand in the first few days of 2024. Stay tuned!

Day 24 - The Peruvian Amazon
We head to the dining room for coffee before we start our boat trip. Neither of us slept very well - not really on account of the animal noises surrounding us but because my cough is getting worse, plus the bedsheets were damp because of the humidity. Today we are going to the Macaw clay lick. We take the boat 90 mins upstream and pull up to a “beach” alongside a bunch of other boats. We sit on our stools waiting for the parrots to arrive. There are some birds flying overhead an in the trees but it’s a slow morning - Marco assures us that as long as it doesn’t rain they will come. In the meantime we learn a bit about the different macaws, parrots and parakeets we can see). After a while we go back to the boat and have some breakfast that was packed for us - a boiled egg in a brioche bun (a little strange but it fills a hole).
Not long after starting breakfast the birds start to come. We finish up and bring our stools back up the beach to watch. The birds are quite far across the river from where we are but we can see them through Marco’s telescope. He explains to us that the birds come here for two reasons 1) to get minerals from the clay and 2) to find a mate (parrots stay in couples and are monogamous).
Apparently there were some other clay licks in the region bit as the clay cliffs have moved further from the riverbank vegetation has grown over them meaning that the parrots no longer visit. Marco says this is the case for Collpa Colorado and Collpa Chunchos hence today we are at Collpa Ocho Gallinas (although on Google maps it is marked as Collpa Chunchos). This is one of the last remaining so they need to keep it clear of vegetation to prevent this from happening.
Next we jump back on the boat and go down a smaller channel to try and spot other wildlife. We find several families of Capybara (Jack was very happy about this), a caiman and lots of turtles.
Time to take the boat back to the lodge - we need a nap. We manage to sleep better as we are so tired but I also start getting a fever - I’m wrapped up in blankets despite it being hot.
At 1pm we head into the dining room for our lunch - it’s Aji de Gallina (the dish I had in Cusco).
I’m dosed up on meds so feeling a bit better, there is just enough time to use the wifi before we go on the 3pm hike.
The hike is not very far and we are continually stopping to see stuff. Some things that we encounter are a tarantula’s nest (Marco tries to entice it out by simulating pray with a vine but it doesn’t fool for it) and learn some more about the trees in the area. One tree has a fruit (Jagua) that’s juice can be used as tattoo ink - a few volunteers come forward and Marco applies it directly with his machete - it goes on clear but apparently will go black later and will last 1-2 weeks. The Ceiba Pentandra (kapok) tree rather than having fruits produces a cotton like seed that floats away from the tree.
At various points most of the group have been dressed down by Marco for talking too much or asking a question if it’s already been answered. He’s very friendly but at the same time he won’t hold back if he gets frustrated 😂
We also learn a bit more about the timber trade - we see another beautiful Ceiba Pentandra tree which is about 50 meters high and is the tree where the king vultures were perched that we spotted from the tower yesterday. The base of the trees trunk reminds me of a fig. Unfortunately these trees are logged for making plywood. Marco explains that the Chunchos land under its original owner was used to log mahogany and cedar to the point that these trees cannot be found here anymore. Plus planting of rubber trees and harvesting of latex for the car industry.
We also stop at an Ironwood (Shihuahuaco) tree. This hardwood is good for building houses hence why it is a target for loggers. Shockingly it is also commonly used for charcoal packets in Europe - what a waste!! Apparently the government will protect this tree within 18months. The Brazil Nut also a target for its timber has already been protected.
These trees are near the property’s boundary and if they were outside they would have already been cut down for sure.
We head back to the hotel via the shortcut route which I am glad about as I’ve been struggling on this walk.
When we get back Marco offers to take us back out in another hour for a night walk and I’d love to go but we decide to stay home as I’m feeling so exhausted.
For dinner we have spag bol and end up staying talking to our group until nearly 10pm. By the time I get up from the table and walk back to the room I suddenly realise how ill I feel - I am completely wiped out, my body is aching. It’s time for bed but I cannot sleep as I am coughing so much and my fever is back throughout night.

yeah its definitely something lol. you cant sex any birds by just *looking* (which is what happened in the show) but some waterfowl and ratites do have penises that can be "popped out" to sex. it kind of sucks that most birds don't have penises though bc when i was working with parrots, unless you had a dimorphic species (which is not many of them) you just kind of had to guess lol. we lost a macaw to egg binding bc of that once. we just had no idea he was female
i love analyzing random obscure bird facts in tv shows like my mom is watching the office rn and dwight just brought in a dead canada goose to roast for lunch or whatever and first of all thats extremely illegal canada geese are a protected species it is illegal to touch one without permits and it is very illegal to slaughter and eat AND you cannot sex birds by checking the vent because (most of) their reproductive organs are internal and male and female birds' cloacas look the exact same. get it fucking right

Fantasia Knights funny moments from my favorite episodes
Lucky, Lucky Snake
Think Kaa is safe from being put through the wringer as a human? Think again.
Enzo: (to Human!Kaa, who is sprawled on the ground, unconscious) You okay there, buddy?
Birds of a Feather
This exchange, after they save Iago from the angry merchant:
Iago: Who are you guys?
Taylor: (gently) We’ve come to save you. Come with us…
(A beat, before Iago abruptly flies off)
Iago: Don’t talk ta me wit’ that voice!
Enzo: (shit-eating grin) A bird just rejected you, dude.
Genie’s first appearance, when he flies into the room and jubilantly hugs Kian, mistaking him for Aladdin. At one point he asks, “Hey Al, did you get shorter?”
“We’ve got a slight problem: Aladdin and Iago swapped species, so Al’s now a blue macaw, and Iago’s… the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.”
Iago: I AINT’ CUTE!
“BY THE POWERS THAT BE, I COMMAND YOU TO RETURN TO NORMAL!!!”
Human!Iago taking advantage of his situation while passing himself off as Jasmine’s brother. And it is amazing.
Iago: Ya might wanna be a bit nicer to me, considering the fact that I AM THE ONE IN CHARGE!
“YOU FOOL!”
Iago assumes that, because he’s a human now, he can approach Rajah without getting pounced on, as he attempts to secretly sic him on a stuck-up young caliph. However, Rajah knows who the red-haired boy is. No points for guessing how that turns out.
Iago: (to the caliph while noticeably battered) You win this round, bub.
Iago’s rant as he starts angrily stripping off the “royal” outfit Genie zapped up for him: “A dog show is where I DRAW THE LINE!”
And said “princely” outfit is what Human!Iago wore in the Broadway musical of Aladdin.
And Iago is wearing those clothes over what he was wearing when he became human.
This gem:
Enzo: YO, BIRD BOY!
Iago: WHAT?! (Realizes he just gave away his location to the Knights)
And immediately afterward Enzo tackles him like a football player.
“Words of wisdom” from Iago:
Iago: Sometimes, you just gotta run like heck from your problems.
The entire chase through the bazaar to rescue Iago from Muge’s mooks. Highlights include:
The burning fireworks cart.
The food merchant behind them ignoring the scene right in front of him and going on with his job. Obviously, this type of thing happens quite often in Agrabah.
Once Genie is called upon, things really get hysterical. The faces on Muge’s servants add to the hilarity.
Muge, as it turns out, is not happy upon learning that her retainers have kidnapped Iago.
Turan: Now, which is worse? Inconveniencing Agrabah, or dying alone and single?
Muge: KIDNAPPING THE PRINCESS’S BROTHER, YOU MORONS!
And in the background, Iago is trying unsuccessfully to free himself from the sack he’s been tied up in from the neck down, to no success. At one point, he tries chewing through the ropes, only to stop when he almost accidentally strangles himself.
An exasperated Iago desperately confessing that he’s not actually Jasmine’s brother, but a parrot. Muge’s disbelieving reaction is priceless.
“Wait, there’s more! I’M SCUM! I once had a psychopath boss, I gamble at the Nest Egg, I ALREADY GOT A GIRL IN THE RAINFOREST!!!”
“TEN THOUSAND YEARS OF AGONY UPON YE!!!” (Ass Shove) “Oops.”
Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
Enzo entering the saloon, making one hell of an impression:
Patron: Hey! Are you the fella who took down them Stonehart brothers?
Enzo: Yeah, I got ‘em with one bullet.
Patron#2: All seven of them?
Enzo: ...Yup. All seven of 'em.
The story he comes up with to explain his supposed feat is pretty hilarious too (what we get to hear of it, anyway).
Enzo: Bullet hits the pickaxe, ricochets back towards Stonehart number three, and THAT'S WHEN THE ROOF CAVED IN, igniting the fuel, instantly vaporizing his bodily form, leaving nothing but a burnt-black husk.
Patron#3: Hold on there, that's only six. What happened to number seven?
Enzo: Oh, well, obviously he died of gangrene.
After Maggie, Mrs. Calloway and Grace are turned human, Calloway demands that they be changed back. Taylor asks Enzo for the Animal Artifact:
Enzo: Ya mean the big, shiny medallion with the mouse insignia?
Taylor: Uh-huh.
Enzo: Exactly like the one those rustlers stole?
Taylor: Yup.
Enzo: ...Well, it got stolen.
Taylor: (Seeing Mrs. Calloway’s Tranquil Fury) So it did.
A great chunk of jokes in this episode are of Pearl’s girls getting used to their new human bodies:
Their first attempt at two-legged walking. Insert QWOP jokes here.
Mrs. Calloway tries to compose herself and look as dignified as possible... and comically walks right into the closed door.
Human Maggie taking a bite of an ear of corn like a cow and a passerby giving her a "WTF?" look.
And earlier, in a Funny Background Event, she’s clearly checking out her.... uh... “human udders.” And then she motions Grace over for a look. Both are clearly unimpressed at what they see.
When the Knights and bovine-turned-humans spot Jose, Maggie gets down on all fours and prepares to charge him.
When the group comes across the Granger Gang’s secret lair, and River is inspecting the locked entrance.
River: This is either gonna take a lot of our magic, or some good lockpicking skills to-
Maggie: UH OH, CLUMSY ME! (shoulder smashes down the door)
(River stands there with a shocked look on her face)
The entire chase/fight scene with the Granger Gang and the heroes counts as both a CMOF and CMOA.
This exchange:
Kian: Who wants a story where the bad guys win?
Jose: I do! It’s called a ‘change of pace’! Let me spell it out for ya: We’ve got you outnumbered! Right boys? (turns around to see the rest of the gang running away screaming) ...Boys? Aw, dangit!

The brief moment of the scarlet macaw and the prominent reddish orange leather luggage reminds me of @waltricia and their excellent color analysis post(which everyone should go read, it’s fantastic).
I thought maybe I was overthinking this, but the shot of the scarlet macaw in a cage turning and looking at Colin as he walks by is quite meaningful. Scarlet Macaws are one of the only species of parrot known to mate for life. They’re known for their deep loyalty and commitment to their mate, and are observed in the wild(and in captivity)to be incredibly affectionate with each other.
“Scarlet macaws are monogamous and they bond for life. Once they have formed a pair, they are hardly ever seen alone, except to feed while the other bird incubates the eggs.”
Source: https://animalia.bio/scarlet-macaw
So, for the creators of Bridgerton to place a bright red bird known for it’s rare life long monogamous tendencies in the first five minutes of the first episode seems like a big waving flag of “Colin is about to find his soulmate”.
I love the attention to detail that goes into this show!
