Marvel comics...
heh small vent so don’t look into this too much.
Normally I don’t really get annoyed. At most I only really got upset when they retconned the Maximoff twins as Magneto’s. But every now and then stuff has changed that makes me go “whatttt”
I guess for starters that X-men Krakoa storyline. Has gone wayyyy too long. Too many characters which would not be so bad but too many to keep up with. And they don’t even bother catching up with the other characters. No I don’t mean the obvious main core cast. Referring to lets see I guess an example would be uhh Icarus, brother to Cannonball(to anyone who isn’t a marvel fan sorry you’re reading this and probably thinking I’m nuts). I heard some of the writers had thought of having him date Dust/ aka Sooraya Qadir. But ... as far as I know nothing has happened with his character since you know the whole resurrection crap. He’s kinda like a lot of characters they brought back, used for background maybe but no real development.
Another would be Kevin Ford/ Wither... as far as I know nothing either with that character. I dunno I thought they missed an opportunity to see if him and Selene would have interactions. Nothing, no “Oh whoa I was manipulated” or “I’m still loyal to Selene”. Then Northstar is apparently suppose to get his adopted baby resurrected... but haven’t heard a thing on that. One mention and its radio silence. I know storywise they got all these AUs, etc, etc. But so much goes on and all these new characters you forget there other X-men BESIDES the main core.
Uh not entirely fond that Marvel is apparently retiring Mary Jane as Peter’s love interest. Now before someone starts a shipping war with me. No I’m not entirely against Black Cat, no. Been use to her since the 90s.But I just you know added her in the cluster of love interests. A part of me doesn’t want them to shelve M.J. away. Just hope Marvel’s just doing this temporarily. Like how Scott/ Cyclops was with Emma Frost for a while. You’re use to the new gal but know the old love interest is just as important. I dunno I’m probably rambling sorry.
Anything else... uhh kinda find it strange that since WandaVision it seems Marvel is catering to Disney. I say seems. I only have two examples. Like how although Wanda was bettering herself and going on dates with Jericho Drumm / Doctor Voodoo... they still shoehorn in Vision. Pft... sorry Wandavision fanatics but I don’t care for Vision. That is a ship I wanna see retire, because it was always the SAME with them. Wanda loves him, he either gets reprogramed or treats her like crap Wanda goes through hell. Its why I couldn’t really like Wanda in MCU she put people in hell over a STUPID robot she couldn’t get over... not her twin brother. Her robot a robot if, he was so smart could have downloaded a copy of himself. (its been done peopleeee)
And recently Agatha’s gonna be a villain now... I admit I’m not a 100% caught up in her history comic wise. Buttt... up until hat stupid show. I always got the impression Agatha was an ally. Soo why do this now? I dunno I really don’t oO. That one felt like to cater Disney+ subscribers and I admit that irks me a little.
But oh well they need money I guess.

Third in the series about Oxford murder squad detective Josie Masters, this is a twisty, complex police procedural with a lot of disparate threads. You don’t want to be reading this while distracted, or put it down for a long time between reading sessions, because I think it would be easy to lose the threads and find it all very confusing. With that said, I actually thoroughly enjoyed it, because the author ties some apparently totally different cases together really cleverly and nothing is as it appears on the surface.
I’m going to address the elephant in the room by saying that now is a tough time to be writing stories with ‘good cops’ as the protagonists, but I think even the most fervent ‘abolish the police’ protestors would agree that the murder squad are police we will still need. However, the fact is that in a world with better resourced social services, lower or zero rates of homelessness and people who actually ask the hard questions and listen to answers when twelve-year-old girls turn up pregnant, Josie wouldn’t have had any murders to investigate. And that’s recognised in the text, if in a subtle way.
It’s easy to empathise with Josie as a single mother trying to get back into the swing of things at work just weeks after giving birth, only to find herself thrown in at the deep end when a friend is murdered. Josie’s not a rule-bender, just a proponent of solid investigative work and intelligent questioning when she gets a witness or a suspect to talk to. I think going forward we’ll see a lot more ‘smart cops’ portrayed in fiction and a lot less of the short-cutters who are inclined to beat up a suspect to get answers. Anyone who wants to write a sympathetic police protagonist could learn a lot from M.J. Ford. I enjoyed this engrossing read and am happy to give it five stars.
Watch Over You is available now.

This rich galaxy cluster, catalogued as CL0024+17, is allowing astronomers to probe the distribution of dark matter in space. The blue streaks near the center of the image are the smeared images of very distant galaxies that are not part of the cluster. The distant galaxies appear distorted because their light is being bent and magnified by the powerful gravity of CL0024+17, an effect called gravitational lensing. Dark matter cannot be seen because it does not shine or reflect light. Astronomers can only detect its influence by how its gravity affects light. By mapping the distorted light created by gravitational lensing, astronomers can trace how dark matter is distributed in the cluster. While mapping the dark matter, astronomers found a dark-matter ring near the cluster's center. The ring's discovery is among the strongest evidence that dark matter exists. The Hubble observations were taken in November 2004 by the Advanced Camera for Surveys.

“The Hiker” by M.J. Ford – Book Review @AvonBooksUK #NetGalley #TheHiker #BookReview @MJFordBooks
This is my first time reading the work of M.J. Ford and “The Hiker” has guaranteed that I will be on the lookout for more by this author. The pace was perfect, just fast enough that you wanted to keep reading and reading. The setting, a somewhat peculiar village in the Pennines in Northern England, was vividly described and, truth be told, just a tad unsettling – especially when the mist rolled…

Here's a fairly solid amount of all the different kinds of media that I like to think both can fit well in and could actually share the same universe as Something Wicked On The Model Runway, which you can both read and see below for yourself right about here:
• Richard Donner's Showdown (Tales From The Crypt)
• Tim Miller's Love, Death & Robots (The Secret War, All Through The House & Bad Travelling)
• Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption & The Green Mile
• William Friedkin's The Exorcist
• William Peter Blatty's Exorcist III: Legion
• Sam Raimi's The Quick and the Dead
• Kim Jee-Won's I Saw The Devil
• Martin Campbell's Edge Of Darkness (2010)
• Park Chan-Wook's Lady Vengeance
• Neil Jordan's The Brave One (2007)
• M.J. Bassett's Solomon Kane (2009)
• Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake & Control
• David Kajganich's The Terror (AMC Series)
• Martin Scorsese's Mirror, Mirror (Amazing Stories)
• Ernest Dickerson's Tales From The Crypt Presents Demon Knight
• Stephen Sommers' The Mummy (1999)
• Julius Avery's Overlord (2018)
• Steven Spielberg's The Adventures Of Tintin (2011)
• Andrei Konchalovsky's Runaway Train
• Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak
• Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996)
• Sam Mendes' Road To Perdition
• Kevin Reynolds' The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002)

Something Wicked On The Model Runway
What is it —
A 2D animated action-horror/magical girls series done in a stylized but dark comic book aesthetic.
PREMISE:
Set in Manhattan, the series at first follows a stunningly and head-turningly gorgeous young blonde woman in her late 20s, Andrea Jones, who suffers from impaired hearing after being in a severe car accident that killed her parents and is more than down-on-her-luck despite her appearance. She's struggling having to take care of her 8 year old sister Sophie as the sole caretaker and after a botched heist, she's unable to prove her worth and pay off an enormous debt owed to the ruthless and cold Liesel Schroeder who as it turns out isn't just a successful supermodel and seamstress but also a crime boss.
Believing that she is still useful, Liesel decides to spare Andrea's life and later offers her a solution to pay off the debt. It turns out that Liesel is also in secret a highly intelligent and properly organized surgeon with a fascination of the human body and she's been experimenting with transplanting animal tissues and organs into human beings to great success and wants to give Andrea an owl's auditory system so her enhanced hearing will help her crack the model agency's safe since Liesel knows she's about to be screwed over on a deal made behind her back.
With no other option left, Andrea agrees and undergoes the surgery.
Now with her newfound abilities, she cracks the agency's case with ease like it's pretty much nothing. However, once Andrea gets an immediate sniff at all this money, she refuses to settle for less and ends up shooting and killing Liesel with a gut shot, head shot and her brains splattered on the wall. Making off with all of the cash, she is confronted by none other than Liesel herself who has risen from the dead, immediately regenerates her bullet holes in front of Andrea's shocked and horrified eyes, rips her entire skin clean off and reveals once and for all that she's in fact a gray skin, pitch black eyed, raven black bodysuit wearing and long black undulating hair (as if it's always underwater or has a life of its own) witch that's as wicked as she is boisterous.
It's here that the side effects or "bugs" that Liesel alluded to way earlier before doing the operation go into effect: Andrea instantly begins displaying mannerisms of an owl, culminating in her jaw cracking open and revealing a beak with her head spinning around completely all while Liesel has a great, big, shit-eating smile on her face with drool.
Finding herself restrained to a billiards table, Andrea is told everything by Liesel in a sadistic and twisted way — she's been a witch ever since her 18th birthday with her skin having fell off and that she's been using Andrea all along, from the moment she first laid her eyes on her Liesel knew she was the perfect host and that the surgery she gave to her was in fact a dark magic transplant and part of her collection of sick experiments. Top of that, she kidnapped Andrea's sister Sophie long before the heist and is keeping her in a cage. She offers Andrea another deal that this time isn't any trick or horrifyingly grotesque deception..... either she is killed by Liesel and has her organs harvested with her sister being drowned and her body fed to her tank of pet piranhas OR she agrees to marry Liesel and become her bride since she's looking to settle down at her peak, the only reason the experiment and spell worked successfully as it did was because Andrea has a strong magical aura meaning that she too is a witch and she sees a large amount of untapped potential in her as a witch.
In tears, Andrea has no choice but to agree once again.
After putting her now-fiancee back to normal in the most graphic and horrific way possible, the rest of the series focuses on the relationship between the two of them and how despite where they started, they form an unlikely but sincere and genuine love and bond for each other as a couple and wives all the while they deal with many new and just as dark and dangerous obstacles in their lives whether it'd be grounded realism like crime, gangsters and serial killers or surreal fantasy like black magic, vampires and other monsters with all six being given their own unique takes on them. But the main aspect and even heart of the whole show is the relationship between the two leads and how Liesel grows into a legit anti-hero who while she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty is also driven or at least has a genuine almost moral code that leads her to do the right thing.
NOTES/TRIVIA/DETAILS:
• The animation style is heavily influenced and even directly inspired by the artwork of comic book artists Ryan Ottley and Tony Moore with the latter's design for the character of Andrea in the first six issues/first volume of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead (Comic Series), being used for the protagonist here and obviously her name being Andrea while her sister's name is Sophie are equally obvious call-backs.
• The character of Liesel Schroeder is best described as a cross between Oogie Boogie, Eris and Shego especially when she's in her true witch form underneath her skin so that there's contrast. When she's in her human skin, she's calculated, sophisticated, majestic, elegant and charismatic but when she's in her real witch skin, she's boisterous, vile, playful, sinister and delightfully twisted.
• Another thing that will be a stand-out is that when she betrays Liesel and shoots/"kills" her, Andrea is revealed to not be the poor victim we all think she is or as she makes herself out to be. She's in fact a selfish, manipulative, greedy, thieving and just as delightfully twisted as Liesel is, gambler with this being the reason why she owed an enormous debt to her in the first place and a source of conflict with her parents before they died in that wreck. The only redeeming source of her is that she genuinely loves and cares about her sister Sophie with her not wanting to be part of her illegal crime-ridden life.
• Just like with witches, the series will also offer distinctive takes on many classic monsters whether they'd be zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, wizards and others. For example, vampires in this universe don't in fact have fangs but do crave blood, are not immune to sunlight and are only killed through that and stakes, holy water and silver. Their ways of killing people and drinking their blood are drugging their victims and cutting either their necks or wrists open to drink their blood.
• The main source of influences and inspirations for the series in terms of its tone and style are Todd McFarlane's Spawn (HBO), The Secret Of NIMH, Return To Oz, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) and even Ben 10: Alien Force, not just with the balance of dark and light but also the fact that there are a lot of shadows in this show to give it that edge.

LAUREN’S ‘DEAR GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE’ BOOKLIST
I wanted to make a list of all the books currently in my house/on my phone waiting to be read as a ‘fun’ project to motivate myself to read them but all it made me want to do is curl up into a ball and cry lmao. Anyhow i’m posting it here a) in case anyone is curious about this list i keep talking about, and b) because i can then cross them off one by one as i go through.
Quick note: this list is not complete. I know for a fact that i’ve accidentally missed off several books, but these are the ones i’ll be focusing on for this year.... or you know, decade. Also these are all books i own (some from years ago), the list of books i don’t own but want to read is... well, probably longer. Under a read more to save us all the scrolling lmao.

Because my TBR is list always wildly out of control, it’s pretty uncommon for me to discover a new author and immediately go looking for more books they’ve written. I think Loreth Anne White was the last one - and now M.J. Ford is another. Fortunately this is only the second book in the series about D.S. Josie Masters, so I’ve only got one more to go back and read!
With girls going missing from Oxford’s prestigious university colleges, Jo has to figure out the connection between them before yet more disappear. When a dead body is found, Jo knows they’re running out of time, and all the clues are pointing in a direction she can’t bring herself to believe, or accept. Because they’re pointing right back… at her.
Keep Her Close is chilling, thrilling and kept me wondering right up until the final stages just who the heck the villain could be. Even though barring a deus ex machina we had to already know, I just couldn’t wrap my head around who or how until the Big Reveal came.
Jo’s a fascinatingly complex character, smart as a whip but prone to making the occasional bad personal decision, she’s got a Past and a family with their own issues. In short, she’s realistic, and that makes her easy to root for. Events which obviously happened in the first book are referred to in this one, but honestly they were just enough to whet my appetite to read more, rather than to obstruct my understanding of this separate case.
Five stars for a brilliant read which both kept me guessing right to the end and whetted my appetite for more.
Keep Her Close is available now.
