The fade of Luxury.

With recent allegations of Dior & Armani bringing immigrant workers from China to Italy to work for them to still be able to label their “goods” (not sure if we still should be referring to them like that) as “Made in Italy”, I’ve been thinking a lot of what luxury means here, right now, in XXI century, year 2024.

Having a very long and trustful history, the majority of the big Maisons de Mode started off as a small craftsmanships. And that’s very important, we’ll come back to it later.

Becoming bigger and bigger, in today’s economy, no Fashion House could possibly allow themselves to keep their manufacturing descreet, neatly crafted and well, mindful & demure.

The demand is great. But the wish to keep as much income as possible in “one hands” is even greater. So the Fashion industry compromises (if that’s even an appropriate term) towards the obvious choice. It’s hard to maintain a staff of true and exquisite craftsmen and still be able to provide for all the people tempted to own a high-end piece.

And with such high demand, high produce and wide-spread marketing, it makes me wonder if luxury is still luxury?

As mentioned previously, all of the big Maisons de Mode started off as a small craftsmanships that earned their title of “luxurious” by accomplishing custom orders for people of royalty (well, not only royalty, but people of class). Due to a small and handcrafted manufacturing, their products could’ve not possibly been unable to meet the expectations of the clients.

Now, is your Dior Tote that much of a luxury?

It’s no secret that prime cost of big Fashion Houses’ goods is way below their marketed price. And add to that the fact that it’s most likely not a handcrafted piece, but rather a mass-produced item. Would the price be still worth the value?

And as much as I know that your favourite fashionistas would argue with me and try to explain how one Maison’s history is worths it all, I believe that what we are facing right now is the Fade of Luxury.

It’s the moment in fashion’s history when new small craftsmanships should be valued as new luxury. We need a new path, a new way for fresh generations that might lead to a better new legacies (hopefully, most importantly, green and fair-staffed).

For now it’s time to watch and learn, but something is definitely changing in this field. And hopefully, changing for the better.
