Hera asteroid mission's CubeSat passengers signal home
The two CubeSat passengers aboard ESA's Hera mission for planetary defense have exchanged their first signals with Earth, confirming their nominal status. The pair were switched on to check out all their systems, marking the first operation of ESA CubeSats in deep space.
"Each CubeSat was activated for about an hour in turn, in live sessions with the ground to perform commissioning—what we call 'are you alive?' and 'stowed checkout' tests," explains ESA's Hera CubeSats Engineer Franco Perez Lissi.
"The pair are currently stowed within their Deep Space Deployers, but we were able to activate every onboard system in turn, including their platform avionics, instruments and the inter-satellite links they will use to talk to Hera, as well as spinning up and down their reaction wheels which will be employed for attitude control."
Launched on 7 October, Hera is ESA's first planetary defense mission, headed to the first solar system body to have had its orbit shifted by human action: the Dimorphos asteroid, which was impacted by NASA's DART spacecraft in 2022.
Traveling with Hera are two shoebox-sized "CubeSats" built up from standardized 10-cm boxes. These miniature spacecraft will fly closer to the asteroid than their mothership, taking additional risks to acquire valuable bonus data.
Juventas, produced for ESA by GOMspace in Luxembourg, will make the first radar probe within an asteroid. while Milani, produced for ESA by Tyvak International in Italy, will perform multispectral mineral prospecting.
he commissioning took place from ESA's ESOC mission control center in Darmstadt in Germany, linked in turn to ESEC, the European Space Security and Education Center, at Redu in Belgium. This site hosts Hera's CubeSat Mission Operations Center, from where the CubeSats will be overseen once they are flying freely in space.
Juventas was activated on 17 October, at 4 million km away from Earth, while Milani followed on 24 October, nearly twice as far at 7.9 million km away.
The distances involved meant the team had to put up with tense waits for signals to pass between Earth and deep space, involving a 32.6 second round-trip delay for Juventas and a 52 second round-trip delay for Milani.
"During this CubeSat commissioning, we have not only confirmed the CubeSat instruments and systems work as planned but also validated the entire ground command infrastructure," explains Sylvain Lodiot, Hera Operations Manager.
"This involves a complex setup where data are received here at the Hera Missions Operations Center at ESOC but telemetry also goes to the CMOC at Redu, overseen by a Spacebel team, passed in turn to the CubeSat Mission Control Centers of the respective companies, to be checked in real time. Verification of this arrangement is good preparation for the free-flying operational phase once Hera reaches Dimorphos."
Andrea Zanotti, Milani's Lead Software Engineer at Tyvak, adds, "Milani didn't experience any computer resets or out of limits currents or voltages, despite its deep space environment which involves increased exposure to cosmic rays. The same is true of Juventas."
Camiel Plevier, Juventas's Lead Software Engineer at GomSpace, notes, "More than a week after launch, with 'fridge' temperatures of around 5°C in the Deep Space Deployers, the batteries of both CubeSats maintained a proper high state of charge. And it was nice to see how the checkout activity inside the CubeSats consistently warmed the temperature sensors throughout the CubeSats and the Deep Space Deployers."
The CubeSats will stay within their Deployers until the mission reaches Dimorphos towards the end of 2026, when they will be deployed at very low velocity of just a few centimeters per second. Any faster and—in the ultra-low gravitational field of the Great Pyramid-sized asteroid—they might risk being lost in space.
Franco adds, "This commissioning is a significant achievement for ESA and our industrial partners, involving many different interfaces that all had to work as planned: all the centers on Earth, then also on the Hera side, including the dedicated Life Support Interface Boards that connects the main spacecraft with the Deployers and CubeSats.
"The concept that a spacecraft can work with smaller companion spacecraft aboard them has been successfully demonstrated, which is going to be followed by more missions in the future, starting with ESA's Ramses mission for planetary defense and then the Comet Interceptor spacecraft."
From this point, the CubeSats will be switched on every two months during Hera's cruise phase, to undergo routine operations such as checkouts, battery conditioning and software updates.

Still going strong!
Thursday, 25th April 2019
Yesterday I flew out to Luxembourg to spend time with my family. I’m fortunate to have a job where I can work remotely and, every now and then, I make use of that luxury and bring my laptop with me to my aunt’s place.
This time I have an office desk in my aunt’s house so I’m all setup to do a normal day’s work in front of my laptop. And the best thing? I have company in the shape of a white shadow that follows me around the whole day. As the office is on the first floor and I keep going to the kitchen on the ground floor for water or tea or something to eat, Héli, my aunt’s bichon frisé, dully follows me around. Well, he does till the point that even gives up and just stays put on the couch as if saying: human, you are far too electric for me! You go and come back. If you don’t come back within 5 minutes, I’ll consider coming for you. So, do me a favour, and take less than that!
I’m currently training for Edinburgh’s half-marathon at the end of May. It all started with the couch to 5k app a couple of years ago. It’s a great app for people like me that always told themselves that running wasn’t for them. You have a coach in your ear - as long as you have headphones on - telling you when to run and when to walk. You start with running for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds, with preferably 3 sessions a week. The walking time reduces as you progress with the running time increasing at the same pace. Soon, I was running for 18 minutes in one session and thinking I couldn’t recognise my own body. In the first year, I gave up before finishing the 9 weeks of the app’s programme. I had some excuse or another not to do it and soon, I was spending more time on the couch than running.
Last year, I volunteered with my friend Becca as part of Alzheimer’s Society’s cheer squad for the London Marathon - which actually takes place this weekend - and I guess I was inspired to get back on it and start running properly. So I went home that day, I got my sports clothes on and went for a run with the app. Soon, (well, it took a few months) I was doing 5k runs with Parkrun and actually talking about doing longer runs. I then signed up to do a 10km and managed to be convinced to do a half marathon this year. And where else to do it if not in my favourite city?
I need to do a 20km run soon and this evening I tried to plan the run with my aunt. It’s not that straightforward when you are in a relatively small country with no real running parks. So, we draw a plan which will involve a lot of coming back on myself. This means that I may be stopping to check my bearings and make sure that I haven’t gone completely off course and end up in a completely different area or country. Good thing that there aren’t any passport control around here! I guess if anyone checks my Strava after the run will think that I’ve lost my marbles. I’ll let you know how it went in a week and a half. Should make for a different post!
I was very proud of myself today when I went for a run in the rain. I started the day almost convincing myself that I could do it tomorrow instead. Thankfully, I managed to change my mindset around and at 5pm, when I closed my laptop, I quickly changed into my running kit and off I went. It was good to just go out and run in the rain, I wasn’t too worried about my times. It felt strong and actually empowering to stick to my training plan! Just over one month till I join the other half-marathon nutters! Not long now!

What is your typical day like?
My day begins at 6:30am with a visit to the gym and I am usually in the office by 8am. I catch up on all the overnight correspondence from our clients in the USA and Australia before reviewing my to-do list for the day – then the real work begins!
I like to meet business colleagues or friends a few times a week for lunch. Otherwise, there is a danger of always eating lunch at my desk! I like to finish my workday around 6pm, but due to time differences and as our business is predominantly destination clients coming to Ireland from USA and UK, I can have calls with clients late into the evening.
My founding and parent company is McEvents & Weddings, but having identified the destination wedding market appeal of Ireland, I established the Dream Irish Wedding brand to target and appeal to potential overseas clients.
We are affiliated with some of Ireland’s finest and most luxurious wedding venues including Adare Manor, Dromoland Castle, and Ashford Castle & Luttrellstown Castle, but we are equally happy to host a client’s intimate elopement on the Cliffs of Moher. We also work at many other locations throughout Ireland including manor houses, coastal retreats, and boutique venues. We plan all sizes of events from small intimate weddings to events with 600+ guests!
As soon as the legislation in Ireland changed to permit gay weddings, we embraced this market and to date have done a number of fabulous bride & bride and groom & groom weddings!
I am a founding member and Vice President of the WIPA Ireland Chapter (2021) which we started in Ireland earlier this year. It is the first chapter outside of the USA. When we look back on the first four months of this year, all of our time was taken up with lobbying the government for clarification and reopening guidelines for events.
I am also a Failte Ireland (tourist board) Brand Ambassador along with only two other planners in Ireland for the luxury destination wedding market.
How did you get started in the industry?
I have a degree in Hotel Management and Business. I reached the position of Hotel General Manager and finally Events Manager of a large leading world hotel. At this point, I decided to start up my own wedding and event planning business.
I did a “Start Your Own Business Course” with a local enterprise board which set me up nicely, but my background in hotel management and business degree were enormous advantages too. My hotel management experience included event and conference planning.
I am always learning with new training opportunities and adding skills such as receiving a wedding and event styling accreditation, completing a marketing and public relations course, and recently completed a Smart Choice Leadership Program.
Pre-Covid, I would regularly visit the USA to learn and explore the latest wedding trends, fashion and event styles, new furnishings and decor, latest linen styles, and entertainment options.
Originally I did a lot of advertising in the bridal magazines and in fact, my first couple found me in an Irish bridal magazine and those same clients brought me seven weddings through word of mouth friends, family, and even one stranger they met on a flight! The power of referrals is priceless in this industry.
Through my background in hotels, I had connections to lots of venues which gave me the advantage to get on their preferred lists!
It was the early days of websites when I started, but I invested in SEO which paid off with business coming my way, particularly from the overseas market. I also attended wedding shows in Ireland, the USA, and the UK. However, I didn’t find the return particularly on the USA one to merit the outlay!
Tourism Ireland, the tourist board which promotes Ireland overseas has supported me with funding and opportunities to be featured at events in the USA and UK.
What challenges did you face when you started your own business?
In the early years, getting my name and brand out was a huge challenge. Finding good vendors was difficult in Ireland in the early days as weddings were a lot more low-key and lacked creativity. Although some vendors I worked with back then I would still rate well today!
My psychology and sociology experience certainly helped me understand and handle all of the family dynamics involved in a wedding from the couples, to the parents, to the wedding party!
At one point, I overstretched myself by taking on a luxury linen franchise that already covered all of Ireland and there really wasn’t a market large enough outside of the country to merit a second branch. But it was still a good experience that I learned a lot from.
What other advice do you have to share?

My husband and I love to travel. We have a keen interest in visiting other countries to experience their culture, heritage, and food. We like to travel overseas 7-8 times per year. Most years, we visit the USA. Our favorite USA locations include Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Palm Springs, and Florida. Outside of the USA, we have enjoyed Taj Mahal, Wall of China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Rome, and Istanbul. I like to keep fit, play golf, walk, do photography, read, and experience new hotels and restaurants.

Govt doesn’t see Nawaz, Fazl, Maryam as stakeholders in the current political setup: Fawad
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, taking exception to the opposition’s plan to hold an "all party conference" on electoral reforms, said on Tuesday that the government didn’t see Nawaz Sharif, Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maryam Nawaz as stakeholders in the current political setup.
Speaking to the media after a meeting of the federal Cabinet, the minister said the opposition leaders were making all-out attempts to derail the existing system, adding that the opposition’s decision to hold an “APC” on electoral reforms was actually aimed an weakening the parliament.
Chaudhry said, however, that the government was open to discuss the proposed electoral reforms with parliamentary leaders.
He said the electronic voting machines (EVMs) were being used in 20 countries and Estonia was the most digitised country as it had now switched to internet voting from the EVM. He added that Pakistan was looking to introduce the EVMs for transparent holding of the polls.
He also stressed that deciding a mechanism for holding elections was the job of the country's political leadership and the ECP and bureaucrats had nothing to do with it. The minister added that anyone intending to write a letter to the ECP should bear in mind that the parliament's sanctity should not be violated in its wake.
Chaudhry maintained that the election commission was not entitled to raise questions on laws passed by parliament. “The ECP has to implement all laws passed by Parliament while matters related to laws contradicting the Constitution will be dealt by the Supreme Court,” he clarified.
During the presser, the minister said that the cabinet had approved the introduction of Public Properties Removal of Encroachment Bill 2021 to pave way for reclamation of government lands encroached by certain elements.
“Under the law, an officer will be appointed by the federal government empowered to issue show-cause notice to an encroacher and, in case of an unsatisfactory answer, he can proceed to take necessary action which includes punishment and imposition of fine.”
He said that if the encroacher refused to surrender the property, then a rent will keep accruing upon him that he will have to pay later when leaving the property.
Chaudhry said an appellate tribunal will also be formed with the authority to take a decision in such cases within 30 days. “There are federal properties which have been encroached upon and several properties of the National Press Trust have been forcefully occupied by encroachers. Similarly, Pakistan Railways and Evacuee Trust will also be able to get their lands retrieved.”
Regarding conditions imposed by some countries on acceptance of certain vaccines, the minister said countries refusing to accept certain vaccines were also in negotiations with the World Health Organisation. “This is a global issue … and we expect this issue to be resolved soon,” he added.
He said the government had witnessed tendency among the public to get jabs, which was encouraging, “and this particular interest was seen especially when we opened vaccinations for all people aged above 18. Now on average, daily 0.4 million people are getting themselves vaccinated and our target is to vaccinate 70m people by the year's end,” he added.
Shedding light on other decisions taken by the cabinet, the minister said a cabinet committee had been formed to review policies related to NGOs and after examination, the committee will report back to the cabinet.
He also informed that the cabinet had approved the appointment of five independent directors in the Diamer-Bhasha Company.
The minister said a three-month extension to Asim Rauf as Chief Executive Authority of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) had also been approved by the cabinet. “His extension is only valid until appointment of the next CEO,” he added.
"A request was earlier floated to the government regarding establishment of the Supreme Court Staff Colony. Now a cabinet committee has been formed with Shireen Mazari as its head to oversee modalities of the formation of such a colony," he added.
He also announced that the Cabinet had permitted Pakistanis residing in Luxembourg to hold dual nationality. “They have been permitted to hold Luxembourg nationality while being Pakistani nationals,” he added.
