'The Maltese Falcon' Movie and 4K Review
The following review was written by Ultimate Rabbit correspondent, Tony Farinella. âThe Maltese Falconâ is a film I imagine I will enjoy a lot more on a second viewing, as this was my first time watching it. The reason I say this is because there are a lot of moving pieces in this film, and it is never boring. However, at times, I found myself trying to follow the story and the plot instead ofâŚ

Hoarse
harsh, grating
when the sun sets on Piltover Bay
the children go home to bed where they lay
mothers and fathers tuck them in tight
and say and say goodnight
Lux is an idiot. She is a fool. She is moronic, brainless, and masochistic. She is standing in front of Jinxâs room. Except, of course, itâs not a room. Itâs a cell - a completely impenetrable cell, with no apparent weaknesses or openings. Thereâs not even a visible door - just a lineless block of steel-reinforced cement.
Caitlynâs keen eye would not find a flaw in the wall. But Caitlyn is not a state-sanctioned thief, with a long record of successful heists. Caitlyn is not Lux, capable of seeing the gaps outlining the door and sensing the arcane touch of a sealing array. And above all, Caitlyn would never dream of standing outside Jinxâs cell, with a hand raised to open the door.
when the city quiets at night
and families turn off all of the lights
progress slows down, peace blankets all
even the towers tall
Given all the security measures in place to ensure Jinxâs containment, nothing can escape the cellâs confinement. And yet, somehow, Lux hears a song, faint and sweet, through the allegedly impenetrable wall. The voice is thin and rough - not unpleasant, only uncertain.
Except there's no stutter in the lyrics, no half-mumbled gibberish, and the notes weave together without pause or awkward shift. No, the singer simply seems to lack practice. She's used to shouting and screaming insults and threats - exploding jagged jokes to crush and push away all those around her. She's never sweet - never soft and tender - never spilled a sound for the soothing and the dreaming.
star rods turn on and light up the streets
children sleep well and dream of sweet treats
and the monsters across Piltover Bay
will stay - will stay away
And Lux really should not be here. Jinx cleared out after Lux stupidly confessed her feelings. That's a blatant rejection. Thatâs a giant sign with neon lights spelling out: NO. Thatâs a radio broadcast to all of Runeterra, explaining in painful detail all the ways Jinx just isnât into her. Lux should take the fucking hint and leave Jinx alone.
So, Lux dispels the sealing array and opens the door. Whoever said that sheâs a genius, they fucking lied.

I LOVE that we ended up having the same favorite companion, Raul is the best!!
YESSSSSSS đ¤!!!!! RAUL REALLY IS THE BEST!!!!!! I LOVE HIM AND HIS STORY SO MUCH!!!!!!!!
His line before the Second Battle of Hoover Dam made me AN EMOTIONAL MESS ( áľĚ´ĚśĚˇĚĽĚ _áľĚ´ĚśĚˇĚŁĚĽĚ )!!!!!!
IâM HIJACKING THIS ASK TO RAMBLE ABOUT MY HEADCANONS INVOLVING RAUL!!!
⢠Heâs AroAce
⢠When upgrading the Presidential Suite in the Lucky 38, Madison (Courier Six) gets the Sunset Sarsaparilla Vending Machine just for Raul. While it comes out of her pay Mr. House restocks it regularly.
⢠Raul and her both LOVE and bond over sweets. In the beginning Raul would play the đ âAt my age this might be my last chance to enjoy something sweetâ card. It worked every-time on her.
⢠When Raul gets bubble gum he gives her the temporary tattoo it comes with. Madison hands them out to kids she encounters on her travels (Freeside, The Boomers ETC.)
⢠She indulges Raulâs sweet tooth to the point he has to go see Dr. Usanagi to get a bad cavity fixed and a few teeth implants.
⢠Raul teaches her about basic weapon repair. However not enough that she doesnât need him.
⢠Together they collect the Star Sunset Sarsaparilla Caps. While not surprised they're both disappointed by the reward. Raul keeps the Pew Pew gun while Madison gives the toy deputy badges to kids.
Afterwards they continue to collect the Star Sunset Sarsaparilla Caps. Inside the Lucky 38 thereâs a jar filled with them.
⢠Out of all the human companions, Raul is the one Madison trusts the most. She will privately discuss Mr. House's plans and what he wants her to do. Madison loves all her companions but knows not everyone would support the actions Mr. House deems necessary. Madison believes once they see the results, theyâll understand. Which obviously isn't the case.
Other companions are uncertain, but Raul is completely aware how loyal Madison is to Mr. House.
Arcade is the best example saying, âI have to say I don't understand where you're going with Mr. House. The man's been manipulating the locals for as long as anyone can remember. If you help him kick the NCR and Legion out, he's going to keep right on doing it. The people in Freeside will be just as bad off as they ever were. If you can find a way to push Mr. House out of the picture as well, I think everyone will be better off."
⢠Before Raul leaves for his own journey post game, Madison gives him a custom medal. She designed it but commissioned Michael Angelo to make it. Itâs something Raul always wears.
⢠Although Raul becomes the Ghost-Vaquero who hunts down those who prey on the weak. Raul still makes it a point to visit her from time to time. He knows sheâd miss his beautiful face.
⢠While unintentional when Raul visits they ALWAYS end up taking a nap together. Theyâll be sitting on one of the couches talking then BOOM knocked out. Old habits die hard.
⢠Since Madisonâs medicine skill is really high sheâll massage Raul and try to help him with his pain.
⢠Speaking of which after the Second Battle of Hoover Dam Madisonâs first luxury purchase is renting out the ENTIRE Ultra-Luxe Casinoâs bathhouse.
I imagine they don't typically allow Ghouls in there so she uses this chance to try and help Raul.
Since soaking in salt water has a lot of benefits for your health like easing muscle cramps, relieving stiffness in joints, back pain ETC. She wants to show Raul her appreciation for everything heâs done for her. Also theyâre both extremely sore after that huge battle.
Iâm not sure if the saltwater used in the Ultra-Luxe Casino is sterile but if it is itâd also be good for any open wounds Raul might have as a Ghoul.
⢠Madison offers to cover the entire cost for Raul to be put in a chamber similar to Mr. Houseâs. However he rejects her offer. When Raul eventually dies she broadcasts a recording of a mariachi band through every radio. She doesn't announce his death wanting the legend of the Ghost-Vaquero to live on forever.
This exchange perfectly describes their bond:
Madison: "Come, Raul, adventure awaits!"
Raul: "Sorry boss, but as much as I'd like to risk getting killed by your side, you seem to already have some help." or "Words cannot contain my excitement at the chance to throw myself headlong into danger with you again, boss."
#To clarify Raul doesn't die young or anything. Raul could live another 200+ years.#Madison will just always outlive him because she did get put into a chamber similar to Robert's.#ALSO THIS LINE OF HIS KILLS ME ->#If we run we might still catch Benny! Well you might. I'll just be wheezing along behind you.#Fallout New Vegas#MaddyMoreauPost#Raul Tejada#Long Text#Long Post

POC!Reader âLuxâ x Walter Marshall
Summary:
Loving a man like Walter Marshall is not for the faint of heart. It's always one step forward and three steps back.I'd leave you, but the rollercoaster's all I've ever had.Yeah, it's one step forward and three steps back.Do you love me, want me, hate me?Boy, I don't understand. No, I don't understand.
Warnings:
18+ Only MDNI. Angst and Feels, Anger, Established Relationship, Complicated Relationships, Memories, Female Character of Color, Implied Sex
Notes:
This fic is heavy inspired by Olivia Rodrigo's "1 step forward, 3 steps back" Lux means light in Latin. Reader is written as someone in their 30s. You are welcome to age her up or down as you so choose. But as a proud woman in her late 30s I wanted this reader to reflect the experience and wisdom that comes with age. *There is no chronological order to the memories* might mess around and make a part two

Called you on the phone today. Just to ask you how you were. All I did was speak normally. Somehow, I still struck a nerve.
That was three days ago.
Three days since I was rushed off the phone with a âI donât have time for this Lux.â Stated in a bitter, biting tone. Followed by the click of a disconnected call.
Three days since I allowed the venom soaked in those words to paralyze me. Keeping me locked within the walls of my apartment. Uncaring of venturing out into the world at large.
Three days of my hands coated in splatters of paint as I tried to control the chaos of my own mind.
Three days of drowning in my own traitorous thoughts. Flashbacks of important moments filtering through like unedited film. A replay of the emotional rollercoaster Iâve been through all because I love him.
Three days of radio silence while he throws himself deeper into yet another case.
As I feel the dried paint between my fingers begin to crack, Iâm inundated with a broadcast of our amorous trials once more.

Three days of radio silence while he throws himself deeper into yet another case.
As I feel the dried paint between my fingers begin to crack, Iâm inundated with a broadcast of our amorous trials once more.
And maybe in some masochistic way. I kinda find it all exciting. Like, which lover will I get today?
Itâs a quaint kind of night. The type where my hips sway to the music playing through the Bluetooth speakers. Quietly humming along to the melody as I manage the pans on the stove.
Walter has gone off to wash the precinct from his skin. Another case closed. Allowing for a small reprieve before heâs at it once again.
I could tell by the sound of his voice when he called this morning to ask me over, that I would be getting the teddy bear version of my man tonight. When heâs all soft and cuddly. Full of warmth and affection. Almost worshipful in the way that he handles me.
I cherish those moments more than most. Selfish in my need to hoard them all for myself. For a man like Walter, who has to constantly be âonâ and navigate the world with a hardened exterior. Allowing himself, even for a modicum of time, to feel safe enough to be soft in my presence, is a gift I am forever thankful for.
The gentle patter of bare feet against hardwood can be heard just before a pair of muscular arms wrap themselves around my waist. A smile lights up my face as plush lips connect to the sensitive skin of my neck.
âMmm. Steak and eggs. Who cares if itâs 7 at night.â
âWell, you left before I could make you breakfast the last time I was over. So Iâm making sure this time around your properly fed from the start.â
âIâm not complaining. Especially when you look so comfortable in my kitchen. Domesticity looks good on you, baby. Good to know thereâs still softness under all those layers of strength.â
âSuch a charmer. Youâd be dampening my panties if I had any on.â
He growls in my ear. Hugging me tighter to his broad chest. âDonât tempt me, darling. Wouldnât want all this good food to go to waste.â
âOf course not, puppy. The only growls I want to hear are from your chest and not your stomach.â He nips my jaw. âNow go sit down and let me serve you dinner before you ruin your dessert.â
âAnd what if I want my dessert now?â
âNo can do, puppy. But I can offer you an appetizer. Will that suffice?â
âIâm sure it will just make my hunger that much worse.â
âMost definitely.â I turn in his arms. Placing mine around his neck, as I pull him down and finally get the taste of his lips Iâve been craving.
He deepens the kiss. Taking the time to savor me like a fine wine.
âYeah. Iâm going to have to get myself a second helping of that. The flavor is exquisite.â
It's back and forth, did I do something wrong? It's back and forth, maybe this is all your fault.
Tonight the girls and I are at a club as dictated by Jules. Her recent break up affording her the power of deciding what we get up to. I truly have no problem with it. If she wants to dry up her tears with liquor and lose herself in the body of another, who am I to judge.
Weâve finally made it up to the bar to order our first round of drinks when I notice a familiar head of hair bobbing above the crowd.
Before I really have time to process why my boyfriend might be here tonight, heâs standing in front of me.
âHey.â I cheerily greet him.
âHi.â He takes hold of my arm. âCome on lets go.â He begins to pull me away from the bar.
I pull out of his grasp. âWhy would I leave? I just got here?â
He leans down, whispering in my ear. âBecause weâre here following a perp and you match the profile of his preferred victims.â
âOkay. So Iâll be extra careful. Iâm not here alone Walter.â
âLux, I donât want to argue this right now. Iâm technically at work.â
âThen work.â
He quirks his brow and tightens his jaw. The next thing I know heâs throwing me over his shoulder in a firemanâs carry and heading for the back.
âDamnit Walt! Put me the fuck down right now!â
When we clear the backdoor and are in the seclusion of the back alley he finally sets me down.
âWhat the fuck is wrong with you?â I grit out.
He just cups my cheeks and kisses me like the world around us doesnât exist. The look in his eyes when we break apart is one I have never seen before.
âYou and Faye are the brightness in my life surrounded by darkness. Sometimes itâs the only thing that keeps me going when things take a turn. I canât keep stealing your light, baby. One of these days Iâm afraid I might just snuff it out.â
âYou donât get to make that decision for me Walter.â I push against his barrel chest. âI do! I get to determine if the risk outweighs the joy. Not you!â
âI donât want any of it to touch you!â
âThatâs not how this works!â I shake my head. âBut Iâll give you this. Iâll allow you some space to work through this fear. When youâre sick of sticking to the shadows, you know where to find the light.â
âYouâre leaving?â
âThatâs what you wanted right?â
âLux.â
âDonât.â I exhale. âIâm too embarrassed to show my face back in there. I just want to go home. We can deal with this fear of yours later. You have work to do. Goodnight Walter.â
I kiss him on the cheek and make my way out of the alley into the parking lot. The weight of his protective gaze holds steady until I am safely in my car.
I'm the love of your life until I make you mad.
The incessant ringing of my phone has roused me from my nest of blankets on the couch. Causing me to pause my 90s slasher marathon.
âHello.â
âLux. Can you come get me?â A clearly inebriated Faye cries into the phone.
âOf course honey. Where are you?â
âA party at some guys house. My friends dragged me here and then just left without me.â She starts sobbing. âLux, Iâm scared. I donât know anyone here and I canât call my dad. Iâve been drinking and heâll kill me.â
âShh, shh. Itâs ok. Iâll come get you and bring you home. Does you mother know where you are?â
âNo.â She whines. âI was sleeping over at my friends house. Thatâs where she thinks I still am.â
âOk. Send me a ping so I have your location. Iâm coming to get you but I have to call your mother on the way, so she knows whatâs going on. I donât want her to worry. But I promise, I will be the one picking you up okay?â
âO-okay.â She whispers. âPlease hurry.â
âFind someplace safe to wait for me.â
I can hear the soft thud of the front door closing through the floorboards of Fayeâs bathroom. Soon followed by Walter calling my name.
âUp here!â I yell out.
âOuch.â Faye slurs. âToo loud. Makes my head throb and my stoma..â
She never finishes that sentence as she leans back over the porcelain and purges herself of her liquid sins once more. Her hair gently held back by my hands.
âFaye?â Walt questions as he stands in the doorframe. âWhat happened? Why are you here? Are you sick?â
I rub her back and get up from the floor. Grabbing Walterâs hand, I lead him out into the hallway. âShe went to a party with her friends, and they left without her. She had a bit too much to drink, so she called me to pick her up.â I inform him.
In a flash his face goes from concerned to pissed off. âYouâre not her mother, Lux. You had no right to do that. You should have called me, and I would have handled it.â
âYou know what? Fuck you, Walter. She was scared and just wanted a chance to sober up before she had to deal with your wrath. I donât give a fuck if sheâs biologically mine or not. Sheâs a part of you and I will protect her at all costs. Even from you. So go ahead and be mad. Hate me. I donât care. She needed me and there was no way I was going to fail her. Now if youâll excuse me, Iâm going to go make sure your daughter is okay and get her tucked into bed where I will also be spending the night watching over her. Maybe in the morning youâll come to your senses.â
I turn to walk back into the bathroom. âOh, and I called Angie on the way. Didnât want her wondering where Faye was if she found out she wasnât still at her friends for the night. She was thankful I was picking her up and bringing her here.â
I step into the bathroom and close the door behind me. Quickly turning on the shower to begin warming up. âLetâs get you cleaned up honey. Then you can knock out in your cozy bed. Howâs that sound?â
âHeavenly.â She slurs.
Allowing Faye some privacy, I go to grab clothes from her room to sleep in. The ruckus of cabinets and drawers being slammed in the kitchen can be heard all the way down the hall. I choose to ignore the raging bull causing a ruckus to make good on my promise to Faye.
Walter is just going to have to deal with it.
Do you love me, want me, hate me? Boy, I don't understand.
The smile that graced my face this morning when I received the text from Walt letting me know he closed the case and to come over for our usual post case dinner and decompression; was megawatt status. This case really took over his life. Even more so than usual. I barely heard a word from him for two weeks.
Receiving that text, knowing he was okay and that I would be seeing him, was a breath of fresh air.
I arrived to his house and let myself in.
It was eerily silent. I thought that maybe I beat Walt home. That is until I stumbled upon his sulking frame on the kitchen floor, slumped against the cabinets. A highball of whiskey clutched tight in his fingers.
âWalt, is everything okay?â I lower myself to the ground to get closer to him. Uncaring of the dress that took me hours to decide on.
âShe didnât survive.â He mumbles out.
âWho?â
âThe wife.â He deadpans. âIt was a home invasion. They did horrible things to this woman in front of her husband who fought back with everything he had. They both ended up in the hospital. Beds next to each other. Something went wrong. A bleed they didnât catch, and she lost her life. He had to watch her die and could do nothing about it.â
âOh, puppy. Iâm so sorry. That poor man. Did you get the assholes responsible?â
âYeah. Young idiots trying to make a name for themselves.â
âGood. Now justice can be served. So what has you so upset?â
He takes a sip of his whiskey. âThe husband looked so hollow when I came to tell him we caught the ones responsible for his wifeâs death. Iâve seen some horrible things but nothing that will haunt me as much as that look on his face did. It reminded me of what I have to lose. I donât know why you even put up with me and all the shit I put you through, but I canât lose you baby. I canât.â He confesses with tears in his eyes.
On instinct I climb into his lap and begin kissing them away until I land on his downturned lips. Where I place the softest of kisses. Barely a graze.
He sets his whiskey down and places his hand loosely around my throat as he pulls me in for a deeper one.
It quickly turns desperate. His jeans are quickly unzipped, and my underwear are pushed to the side. Simultaneous groans ricochet off the walls as our pelvisâ connect and we being to grind in tortuous pleasure. Succumbing to the need to reenforce our bond to each other.
Itâs both loving and painful. Raw and unfiltered. An emotional mess of our demons dancing together before we chase them away to their dark depths once more.
âI love you.â I pant out. âDemons and all.â
It's always one step forward and three steps back. I'd leave you, but the rollercoaster's all I've ever had.
Three days Iâve been stuck in this cycle of despair. Lost to my thoughts. Holding on to memories of him like I may never get the chance to make new ones.
As I finally find the courage to drag myself off the paint-stained drop cloth. Aiming for a hot bath to sooth my aching soul. A frantic set of knocks rattles down the hall from my front door.
I stand stock still in the entry way as a voice filters in.
âLux! Open the door!â The knocking continues. Followed by a palm hitting the wood and sliding down. âPlease.â

"if you're going to stand there, i'm putting you to work. hand me that knob." lux stood in front of her "broadcasting" table, fumbling with the so-called radio that laid in front of her. she was normally pretty good at fixing things, but this one stumped her. and it was not making her happy. "come on, come on. it's on the table with all the other parts. follow you heart. you know which one." she waved her hand in the general direction, offering little to no help to which of the thirty pieces that laid on the table she actually needed.

The Screen Guild Theater production of Casablanca, broadcast on April 26, 1943.
There is also a Lux Radio Theatre production of it (broadcast: January 24, 1944) but that one features Ladd and Lamarr in the lead roles instead of Bogart and Bergman.

LUX RADIO THEATRE presents FANCY PANTS

Lux Radio Theatre (1935-55) was a radio anthology series that adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films (âLux Presents Hollywoodâ). These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences in Los Angeles. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand.
Fancy Pants was broadcast live from Hollywood on CBS Radio in front of a live audience.
Produced and Hosted by William Keighley
Written by Edmund Hartman, who also wrote the screenplay
Libby Collins is billed as a "Hollywood Reporter" during the Act One commecial break and Joan Taylor is guest for the Act Two commerical break.
THE CAST
Lucille Ball (Agatha Floud, American Debutante) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as âQueen of the Bâsâ due to her many appearances in âBâ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled âMy Favorite Husbandâ which eventually led to the creation of âI Love Lucy,â a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as âThe Lucy-Desi Comedy Hourâ) so did Lucy and Desiâs marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with âThe Lucy Show,â which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom âHereâs Lucyâ co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of âThe Lucy Showâ during season two. Before her death in April 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with âLife With Lucy,â also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes. She died on April 26, 1989 at the age of 77.
Bob Hope (Mr. Arthur Tyler / âHumphreyâ aka âOliver Grimesâ aka âFancy Pantsâ) was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career in virtually all forms of media he received five honorary Academy Awards. In 1945, Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hopeâs radio show. Ball and Hope did three other films together. He appeared as himself on the season 6 opener of âI Love Lucy.â He did a brief cameo in a 1964 episode of âThe Lucy Show.â  He died in 2003 at age 100.
Norma Varden (Gwendolyn Fairmore / âLady Maude Brinsteadâ) is probably best known for playing Frau Schmidt, the somewhat circumspect housekeeper at the Von Trapp mansion in 1965â˛s The Sound Of Music. Lucy fans will remember her as weepy Mrs. Benson, who Lucy Ricardo convinces to swap apartments in âThe Ricardos Change Apartmentsâ (ILL S2;E26) in 1953. The London-born actress turned up on an episode of âThe Lucy Showâ.
Gail Bonney was seen in two 1950 films featuring Lucille Ball. In March 1950, she played an uncredited bicyclist in A Woman of Distinction in which Lucille Ball had a cameo as herself. In September 1950, Bonney was seen in the Lucille Ball film The Fuller Brush Girl. Two years later, Gail Bonney played Mrs. Hudson in "The Amateur Hour," (ILL S1;E14) hiring Lucy Ricardo to babysit her twin boys. She returned to do a 1965 episode of "The Lucy Showâ titled âLucy and The Ceramic Catâ (TLS S3;E16). Bonneyâs final appearance on a Lucy sitcom was in a 1968 episode of "Hereâs Lucyâ titled âLucy and Eva Gaborâ (HL S1;E7).
Also featuring: Constance Cavendish (Effie Floud), Charlie Lung, Edwin Max, Robert O, and Dan O'Herlihy.
Fancy Pants is a 1950 American romantic comedy western film directed by George Marshall and starring Bob Hope and Lucille Ball. It is a musical adaptation of Ruggles of Red Gap. The Paramount film premiered on July 19, 1950.
Synopsis: In 1905, an American actor (Arthur Tyler) impersonating an English butler named Humphry is hired by a nouveau riche woman (Effie Floud) from New Mexico to refine her husband and her headstrong daughter (Aggie). Complications ensue when the town believes Arthur to be an Earl, and President Roosevelt decides to pay a visit.Â
Music: The Fancy Pants theme by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans is used at the broadcast's act openings. Although in the film Lucille Ball's vocals were dubbed by Annette Warren, here Ball does her own singing of the title tune.
As in the film, Bob Hope sings "Home Cookin'" by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.
Exit music is from "Round-up on the Prairie" by Aaron Kenny.
FANCY TRIVIA
Bob Hope tended to ad-lib dialogue, sometimes based on current events or his whim. These 'mentions' by Hope may have been unscripted. It is often difficult to determine if it is Bob Hope, Humphrey the butler, or actor Arthur Tyler speaking. Most of the references are anachronistic as the action takes place in 1905.
THEODORE 'TEDDY' ROOSEVELT ~ was the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. The youngest man ever to be elected President at age 42, he was a statesman, conservationist, and soldier. The action of âLucy Wins A Racehorseâ (1958) is set at the now defunct Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island. The raceway is named after the village of Roosevelt, which was named for him.
Bob Hope mentions Stopette, an underarm deodorant sold from 1941 until 1956. It was a longtime sponsor of the CBS game show "What's My Line?". Lucille Ball made six appearances on the show, one alongside Bob Hope. Time Magazine called Stopette "the best-selling deodorant of the early 1950s"
After a joke about being pelted with tomatoes, Bob Hope mentions Red Skelton, a comic actor who appeared with him in 17 film and television projects, six of which also included Lucille Ball. Skelton appeared as himself on "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" in 1959.
Hope mentions Jergens Lotion, a product marketed by the Andrew Jergens Company, founded in 1882 in Cincinatti, Ohio.
Bing Crosby is winkingly mentioned by Bob Hope. Hope and Crosby were screen partners, filming seven 'Road' pictures between 1940 and 1962.
The Act One commercial for bath size Lux Soap refers to the RKO film His Kind of Woman, starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell, who is said to be a Lux girl. The film is set in Mexico and produced by Howard Hughtes. The film wouldn't be released for 11 months after the broadcast.
Telling a dramatic story, Bob Hope mentions Lipton Tea ("They cut off our Liptons!"). During the story, Hope starts to laugh and momentarily pauses before getting back on script. Historically, Thomas Lipton started selling tea in Scotland in 1871, his name eventually becoming synonymous with the product.
Talking about poor western hospitality, Hope mentions Spade Cooley, a musician and actor from Oklahoma who found success in Hollywood. Cooley was part Cherokee Indian. His biggest hit was "Shame On You". Ten years after this broadcast, he was convicted of murdering his wife.
CART BELKNAP: "What happened to that big elephant you were riding?" HUMPHREY: "He'd gone to Washington to get ready for '52." (Hope ad libs after audience laughs) "I never dreamed of that!"
Hope is referring to the elephant that is the symbol of the Republican party. In 1950, it was expected that Democratic President Harry S. Truman would seek a third term. Truman had become President after the death of Franklin Roosevelt and then went on to win his first full term in 1948. In 1952, America would have had a Republican in the White House since 1933. As it turned out, Truman decided not to run in 1952, despite being exempt from term limit legistlation he himself signed into law. The winner was indeed a Republican, Dwight Eisenhower.
HUMPHREY: "Water! Water! Anything that'll save my life! A packet of Chesterfields!" Hope was a spokesperson for the cigarette. The brand was manufactured by a subsidiary of Philip-Morris, the tobacco company that sponsored "I Love Lucy" in 1951. The studio audience laughs at this ad-lib.
HUMPHREY: "I'm no Earl. I'm not even Humphrey. I'm an Arthur Tyler, an actor: AFTRA, AGVA, and SAG. And paid up!"
Hope's ad-lib refers to the performers unions American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA), and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). At the time of broadcast, Ronald Reagan was president of SAG. Recently, SAG and AFTRA merged to create SAG-ATRA. Needless to say, these labor unions did not exist in 1905.
During the second act commercial break, Joan Taylor and William Keighley mention Paramount's Here Comes the Groom starring Jane Wyman and Alexis Smith, both said to be "Lux Lovely". The Frank Capra film was released September 20, 1951 and won a 1952 Oscar for Best Song: "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening." Coincidentally, Gail Bonney, who is heard in this radiocast, appears uncredited as a telephone operator in the film.
After singing "Home Cookin'" with Ball, Hope quickly quips "Thank you, Margaret." In June 1950, Hope had joined songstress Margaret Whiting and the Starlighters to release a single of the song - sans Lucy. The mention of Margaret causes the studio audience to erupt in laughter, and the actress playing Effie has to say: "Listen! I'm talkin' to you!"
HUMPHREY: "I've been practicing the royal sneer all morning. I'll soon be getting fan mail from Basil Rathbone."
Basil Rathbone was an actor best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a series of films. In 1954, Hope and Rathbone starred together in the light comedy Casanova's Big Night. Rathbone had previously guest starred on Hope's 1941 radio show.
HUMPHREY: "The whole day on horseback! I may find a new place to put my Dr. Scholl's foot pads!"
Dr. William Mathias Scholl was born on June 22, 1882 in La Porte, Indiana. He learned about foot care and shoes thanks to his grandfather, who was a shoemaker in Germany. He founded the Dr. Schollâs company in 1906.
HUMPHREY: "Listen Aggie, I can't ride a horse. I can't even ride a jack ass. Even after all those road pictures we did together."
Hope is making a snide joke about Bing Crosby, who (at that point) starred with him in five "Road To..." films, most with Dorothy Lamour. Two more would follow in 1952 and 1962.
After Act Three, Libby Collins and Mr. Keighley announce a contest to identify a mystery Hollywood Lux girl. They say that her first name is June. [It was later revealed to be June Allyson.]
At the conclusion of the story, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball are briefly interviewed by Mr. Keighley. Hope mentions a contest to win a world premiere of his next film, My Favorite Spy, in the listener's hometown. The film premiered on Christmas Day 1952.
Keighley promotes next week's Lux Radio Theatre, Sunset Boulevard, starring the original film stars Gloria Swanson and William Holden, and featuring Nancy Gates.
A final commercial suggests washing stockings in Lux.
