This one was a pretty interesting special, the story actually was pretty neat, despite a couple of scenes like at the very beginning and somewhere in the middle

The premise of this special is that Fujiko suffers amnesia due to a pretty big accident, wiping her memory and making her a completely different person. Pre-accident, she was the only one who knew the secrets for unlocking a certain treasure called the Columbus Egg, thanks to the Columbus files.

Lupin and this girl named Roseria try to help Fujiko to jog her memory back but some baddies wanna steal her away too so hijinks ensue. Its also the origin of the scene where Goemon is performing "CPR" on Jigen lmao

Liked the style of this special too! The Lupgang's designs were pretty good 💗

Okay, does anyone know if the dub of Columbus Files is just really weird? Why are there so many jokes about them mispronouncing/ not knowing each other’s names?? There is no way that’s what’s being said in Japanese, right??? The gang feels so out of character, ugh.

The Columbus Files / Da Capo of Love: Fujiko’s Unlucky Days

I take a break from watching Lupin and working on this blog every week usually on my weekend so I can focus on other things, but everything I come back and the main theme starts to play, I’m excited to watch Lupin again. That’s how addicting the TV Special theme is. And I’m glad this particular rendition of the theme is back, we haven’t heard it in a while.

However if I’m being honest, I can’t say I particularly enjoyed this special. It doesn’t have a lot going on for starters, it’s fairly straight forward and there isn’t really much of a twist unlike the last few specials we’ve had. I think my biggest complaint, however, is the handling of Fujiko.

It’s such a shame because normally I love Fujiko-centric stories. She’s a great character but the specials so far have kind of played her in the same light over and over. She’s interested in some rich billionaire, she tries to steal their money, and they end up being related to the villain somehow. I give props to Harimao’s Treasure for switching it up and making the billionaire one of the good guys, but that’s really the only time they’ve tried something different. Is it really not until her TV Series that she gets some actual character development? Because I absolutely love the way Koike portrays her (Most of the time. Jigen’s Gravestone is most unfortunate for her lol). 

This special’s idea is to focus on Fujiko but to give her amnesia so really the Fujiko we’re focused on is not the Fujiko we’re familiar with. Instead she becomes a soft-spoken woman and damsel in distress who everyone is hunting because she’s the only person who memorized the Columbus Files before they were destroyed. I’ll give the special some credit, we get to see Lupin in a different light when he first discovers she’s got amnesia where he pretends he’s going to have sex with her and then backs off, revealing that he enjoys the game they play and without it he wouldn’t actually try to do anything to her. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

We’ve also gone back to the titular treasure (the Columbus Files in this case) playing little relevance to the story other than being a treasure map. It really feels like one of the earlier specials in this regard. A shame because I thought we had gotten better about this particularly recently.

Anyway, the treasure ends up being a weird weather controlling device or something. I honestly had a bit of trouble following it. It generated some kind of energy that allowed the villain to control weather or something of the sort. He also uses said energy to make himself the incredible Hulk.

Either way, there doesn’t exist anything that allows someone to make tornados at will (thank god) so there’s nothing I can really compare it to in terms of value, and the special never gives a values for it either. Regardless it disappears into the ocean at the end anyway. So once again, Lupin gets away with nothing. Not even a kiss from Fujiko. Sad Lupin.

Lupin’s Reward: $0

I can’t say I enjoyed this special to be honest, easily one of the weakest ones I’ve watched, but still I’m glad I saw it at least once. I have high hopes for the rest of them, especially as we get into the 2000′s era.

Next is Missed by a Dollar, the last traditionally animated Lupin special. I’m sad to see it end like this, as I’m a big proponent for traditional animation. It’s been a fun ride, and I hope this last special delivers.

Can’t stand Lupin in this movie, really almost ruins “cross dressing” Lupin for me.
