Happy International Men's Day, Ken!
International Men's Day may be most well-known for the fact that every year, on International Women's Day, it trends on social media because of people asking why we talk about IWD and not IMD.
It is to raise awareness for some significant and important issues pertaining to men and men's health: statistics indicate that men are three times more likely to take their own life than women, and nearly twice as likely to suffer from medical conditions such as lung cancer and heart disease.
Tumblr media
It also takes place in the middle of Movember, a men's health charity event that takes place across the month of November.
International Men's Day 2024 is "Positive Male Role Models". Mattel doesn't acknowledge the day the way that they do for International Women's Day, and I can't blame them; the Barbie brand is significantly more suited towards uplifting and encouraging women, and that's fine. If people want a toy brand to show the same support for International Men's Day I think that's totally fair - but there's no reason it should be Barbie.
That being said, I like any excuse to talk about various lesser known Barbie-line dolls, so I thought I'd take a moment to say so.
For example; I have spoken before about Francie, the first doll in the Barbie line to be portrayed as a Black woman as well as a white woman; and Christie, the first character in the doll line to be portrayed only as a Black woman. But did you know about Brad, the first Black male in the doll line?
Tumblr media
There were only a few Brad dolls made in the early 1970s (Wikipedia cites 1968, but every other source I've seen says 1970) and he was Christie's boyfriend.
A few years later came Curtis, who used the same head sculpt, and who was paired with Barbie's friend Cara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first Black male in the Barbie line to be branded as Ken, rather than as a friend of Barbie and Ken, appears to be Sunsational Malibu Ken from 1982.
Tumblr media
As you can see in this Barbie ad, he also has really cool hair.

King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, says Buckingham Palace.
The type of cancer has not been revealed — it is not prostate cancer but was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.
The King began "regular treatments" on Monday and will postpone public duties during it, the Palace said.
The Monarch, 75, "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," it added.
No further details are being shared on the stage of cancer or a prognosis.
Charles informed both his sons personally about his diagnosis and the Prince of Wales was said to be in regular contact with his father.
The King returned to London from Sandringham in Norfolk on Monday morning, and the palace says he has started treatment as an outpatient.
Although he will pause his public events, the King will continue with his constitutional role as head of state, including paperwork and private meetings.
It is understood his weekly audiences with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will continue and will be in person, unless doctors advise that he limits such contact.
There is a constitutional mechanism for when the head of state is unable to carry out official duties — in that circumstance, "counsellors of state" can be appointed to stand in for the monarch.
At present that includes Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward.
Prince Harry and the Duke of York are no longer called upon as they are non-working royals.
Prince William had also temporarily withdrawn from public engagements while he helped his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, as she recovered from abdominal surgery she had last month.
But it was announced earlier on Monday that he would return to public duties later this week.
Tumblr media
The King was seen at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday, where he waved to crowds and walked for about 10 minutes.
He had a prostate procedure at a private London hospital more than a week ago.
At the time, the Palace said the treatment was for a "benign" condition.
"It was during this intervention that a separate issue of concern was noted and subsequently diagnosed as a form of cancer," it said on Monday.
The King chose to go public about his cancer treatment, the Palace said, as he had been a patron of a number of cancer-related charities when he was Prince of Wales.
"In this capacity, His Majesty has often spoken publicly in support of cancer patients, their loved ones and the wonderful health professionals who help care for them."
He had also gone public about his prostate treatment, with the aim of encouraging more men to get prostate checks.
He was said to have been delighted to have raised awareness about the issue, with the NHS website reporting a surge in issues about prostate conditions.
The Royal Society of Medicine thanked the King for highlighting "how cancer is indiscriminate" and urged members of the public eligible for cancer screenings to make an appointment.
"Please don't be shy - the more information we have the better to help — hopefully — rule out cancer or, if not, put you on the most suitable treatment pathway," its president, Dr Jay Verma, said.
One in two people in the UK develop some kind of cancer during their lifetime.
There are more than 200 types of cancer — the most common ones in the UK are breast, lung, prostate, and bowel, according to the NHS website.
For many types of cancer, the chance of getting it increases with age.
UK figures suggest, on average each year, more than a third (36%) of new cancer cases were in people aged 75 and over.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the King a "full and speedy recovery," as did Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle.
US President Joe Biden expressed his concern and said he would speak to the King.
In a post on X, he later said:
"Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery."
Mr Biden's son, Beau, died of brain cancer aged 46, and his long-time friend, Republican Senator John McCain, also died of cancer in 2018.
Charles acceded to the throne on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, and his coronation took place in May 2023.
The King and Queen are scheduled to visit Canada in May, and Australia, New Zealand and Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October.
The Palace has yet to confirm whether the tours will go ahead, with no date suggested for the King's return to full public duties.

An Overview of Cancer Walk Fundraising Events in the US
Tumblr media
Nearly two million Americans receive a cancer diagnosis each year. Cancer treatment and care require billions in funding. However, the American government cannot afford it. Therefore, citizens have taken it upon themselves to raise funds in various ways, such as participating in cancer walks.
In 2022, cancer led to 609,360 deaths in the United States, per the American Cancer Society. Common cancer diagnoses include breast cancer, with over 313,000 new cases annually, while lung and bronchus cancer causes the most deaths, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The American Institute for Cancer Research advises the federal government to provide the National Institutes of Health with at least $49 billion in funding, including $7.76 billion for NCI, but it has not reached that amount.
Cancer walks, or run/walk fundraisers and walkathons, bring together community members to show their support for families living with cancer diagnoses and raise money for a cure. While different events have different rules and restrictions, individuals can participate as runners, walkers, or volunteers. Certain events may allow cyclists or pets.
A person participates in a cancer walk by signing up for the event and finding sponsors. Individuals often look to family and friends for sponsors but may also reach out to coworkers and local business leaders. Participants can also use social media platforms to raise greater awareness for a fundraiser. Each sponsor pledges a total sum or a per-mile donation, such as $20 per mile. The walkathon then plays out like a less competitive marathon, with participants pacing themselves to continue for many hours and raise as much money as possible.
There are a few notable charity walk events and organizations in the US. The American Cancer Society coordinates events throughout the country. Individuals can visit cancer.org and search for local run/walk events. The organization also provides resources for individuals to host fundraising events and information about related fundraising opportunities. The 2024 Choose Your Race–DetermiNation Mini Series allows athletes and philanthropists in Chicago to integrate fundraising initiatives with a myriad of events during the year, including trail races, local 5ks, triathlons, and more. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is another well-known cancer walk.
After a person has found or organized a local charity walk/run event, they should prepare for the event in several ways. Participants should remember that they are raising money for a cause, not trying to win a race. A competitive mindset is unhelpful while preparing for an event. Instead, participants should remind potential sponsors of the positive difference they can make by pledging a donation or signing up to participate in the event. Team-building benefits and opportunities to socialize outside of work are additional positives to highlight when promoting a walk/run event.
That said, individuals must appreciate that they are taking on a physical challenge and may cover many miles over an extended period. Even if a person has no ambition to “win” a charity walk or set a personal best, they should discuss their physical condition with a medical professional before signing up for a walk. Breast Cancer Now recommends participants spend two to three months training for an event.

Phytonutrients Market to be at Forefront by 2024
The term “phyto” originated from the Greek word meaning “plant”. Phytonutrients are certain specific, organic components found in plants provide health benefits. Phytonutrients are gaining importance globally due to their potential health benefits. Demand for these nutrients from fortified foods and dietary supplements industries is rising. Vegetables, legumes, nuts, grains and fruits are rich sources of phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are nutrients found in plants that get developed to protect the plants from damaging environments.
Read Report Overview @
https://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/phytonutrients-market.html
Plants are exposed to excess ultraviolet rays, predator pests, toxins, and pollutants. This exposure results in generation of hazardous free radicals within plant cells. These free radicals can then bind to and damage proteins, cell membranes, and DNAs of the plant. Phytonutrients get developed simultaneously to shield the plant from this damage as well as provide them with color, flavor, and smell. Fruits and vegetables are concentrated sources of phytonutrients. Other plant foods such as whole grains, legumes/beans, nuts and seeds, and herbs and spices also contain phytonutrients.
The beneficial effects of phytonutrients will not be seen immediately, but over months or years. Phytonutrients and other healthy compounds like vitamins and minerals can only prevent or delay developing diseases. Phytonutrients are plant compounds such as carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol, and phytosterols have health-protecting properties. They are found in plants (fruits and vegetables) or things made from plants such as tofu or tea. Phytochemicals are best taken in by eating the foods that contain them rather than supplements or pills.
Consumption of a diet filled with a variety of vegetables can boost the effectiveness of phytonutrients, as different plants and vegetables contain different phytonutrients. When combined, they have a more positive effect on human bodies. Health benefits from consumption of phytonutrients include reduction in blood pressure and increase in vessel dilation, improved vision, decreased inflammation, decreased LDL (low density lipids) cholesterol, and prevention of cellular damage. Growing interest in health benefits and increasing end-use applications are key driving factors for the global phytonutrients market. Phytonutrients such as carotenoids protect the body against the risk of heart disease, stroke, blindness, and certain types of cancer. They may also help slow the aging process, reduce difficulties associated with diabetes, and improve lung utility.
The supplements are readily available and contain multiple phytonutrients. Rising demand for functional food coupled with growing awareness about health may support the growth of the phytonutrients market. Increase in health concerns among consumers owing to change in food habits may fuel the phytonutrients market in the food & beverages application. Growth of the phytonutrients market is due to increasing attention of consumers toward superior-quality foodstuffs, which is balanced in terms of nutrients.
The global phytonutrients market has been segmented by class (phytochemicals, medicinal plants, and herbs & spices), by type (carotenoids, phytosterols, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and vitamin E), and by application (food & beverages, feed, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics).
Europe dominates the global phytonutrients market, owing to strong outlook for health consciousness among consumers in this region. North America and Asia Pacific follow Europe.
