Chapter 9: The Big Reveal

By the time Star reached five months pregnant, her baby bump had become impossible to hide, much to Luna’s excitement. Everywhere they went, Luna proudly announced that her mom was having a baby, earning amused smiles from strangers. The family had decided it was finally time to share the baby’s gender with everyone they loved, and Star had the perfect idea: a magical-themed gender reveal party.

The backyard of their house was transformed into a whimsical wonderland. Streamers in shades of pink, blue, and gold were strung from tree branches, enchanted balloons hovered mid-air, and a shimmering table held cupcakes and snacks—half decorated with stars and half with tiny moons. Marco had been up all night preparing the food while Star used her magic to add sparkle and flair.

“Luna, are you ready to help with the big reveal?” Star asked as she adjusted her dress, which hugged her growing bump.

Luna nodded eagerly, holding onto a wand Star had enchanted for the occasion. “I’m ready, Momma! I can’t wait to find out if it’s a sister or brother!”

As the guests arrived—friends from Echo Creek, family members, and even a few magical creatures from Mewni—there was an air of excitement. Marco’s parents, Angie and Rafael, were among the first to arrive, bringing a homemade fruit tart. “You two really know how to throw a party!” Angie said, hugging Star.

“It’s all Star,” Marco said with a laugh. “She can’t resist adding a little magic to everything.”

Eclipsa and Moon arrived soon after, bringing magical gifts for the baby. Eclipsa handed Star a tiny crystal mobile, its pieces glowing softly. “For sweet dreams,” she explained with a wink.

The guests mingled, eating cupcakes and guessing whether the baby would be a boy or a girl. Luna eagerly ran around, asking everyone their predictions.

“I think it’s a boy!” she declared to one of Marco’s students. “But if it’s a girl, that’s okay too. I’ll still teach her how to draw unicorns.”

Finally, it was time for the big reveal. Everyone gathered around a large cauldron in the center of the yard, which Star had enchanted to release colored smoke—pink for a girl, blue for a boy—when Luna waved her wand.

Marco stood next to Star, his arm around her. “Alright, everyone! The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Luna, are you ready to do the honors?”

Luna beamed, holding the wand tightly. “Ready!”

She waved the wand over the cauldron, and a moment later, a puff of shimmering blue smoke burst into the air, sparkling like starlight. The crowd cheered and clapped as Luna jumped up and down.

“It’s a boy! I’m getting a brother!” she squealed, running to hug Star and Marco.

Star laughed, tears of joy in her eyes, as she knelt to hug Luna back. “Yes, sweetie, you’re getting a baby brother.”

Marco crouched down beside them, his own emotions evident in his smile. “Looks like Orion might be the perfect name after all.”

The rest of the party was filled with congratulations and laughter. Luna made sure everyone knew her plans for being the best big sister ever.

As the sun set and the last of the guests left, Star and Marco sat together on the porch, watching Luna chase fireflies in the yard.

“You know,” Star said softly, resting her hand on her belly, “this little guy is already so loved. I can’t wait to meet him.”

Marco smiled, leaning over to kiss her forehead. “Neither can I. And with Luna as his big sister, he’s in for a pretty amazing life.”

Together, they watched the fireflies dance, dreaming of the adventures their growing family would share.

I understand the movie could not be EXACTLY like the book! That being said…

I know they had to cut characters but JUNE??? I expected Nora’s role to be bigger BECAUSE there was no June but it really didn’t seem so?

I wish Henry’s character had been a bit more fleshed out (I KNOW ITS HARDER FOR INTROVERTED/QUIET CHARACTERS TO LET THEIR PERSONALITY SHINE) I just wish we had seen more of his relationship with (my) Bea(loved) and Phillip bc it gives a whole lot of context to his ghosting Alex

All in all: I’ve got mixed feelings about it but I will probably end up watching it again several times and read the book again and oscillate between being upset and amazed. ALSO LET IT BE KNOWN: I am SO glad this movie even got fucking MADE! That in and of itself is such a huge accomplishment and I want a million more perfectly imperfect gay little romcoms to be made bc of this

chapter 8

Chapter 8: Inspiration from the Stars

It was another cozy evening at the Butterfly-Diaz household, and the family was gathered in the living room. Luna was busy coloring pictures of what she imagined her new sibling would look like—complete with sparkles and a crown—while Star and Marco sat nearby, flipping through baby name books.

“So, we’ve got a solid list of girl names,” Marco said, jotting down a few more ideas in their trusty notebook. “But what about boy names? Any favorites yet?”

Star tapped her chin thoughtfully, then lit up. “Oh! What about Orion?”

Marco raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Orion? That’s… actually really cool. Where’d you come up with that?”

Star grinned sheepishly. “Remember that movie we watched a while back? Orion and the Dark? I loved it. Orion was such a brave little kid, and his name just stuck with me.”

Marco laughed, leaning back against the couch. “You’re telling me you want to name our kid after a character from a Netflix movie?”

“Why not?” Star said with a playful shrug. “It’s a great name! Plus, it’s celestial, magical, and totally fits with our vibe.”

Luna perked up from her spot on the carpet. “Who’s Orion? Is he the baby?”

Star chuckled. “Not yet, sweetie. But Orion was a kid in a story we watched. He was scared of the dark, but he made friends with it and became super brave.”

Luna thought for a moment. “I like it! If it’s a boy, can we name him Orion? It sounds like a superhero!”

Marco smiled, clearly warming to the idea. “It does have a nice ring to it. Orion Diaz. Or maybe Orion Butterfly-Diaz?”

“See?” Star said, nudging him. “Told you it was good!”

They spent the rest of the evening brainstorming more boy names to add to their list:

• Kai

• Archer

• Felix

• Julian

• Tobias

Every now and then, Luna chimed in with her imaginative ideas, like “Captain Moonbeam” or “Super Nova’s Brother.” Star and Marco lovingly wrote them down in a separate section labeled Luna’s Creative Suggestions.

By the end of the night, Marco admitted, “Alright, I have to say, Orion is my favorite so far. Even if it did come from Netflix.”

“Hey,” Star teased, “you can find inspiration anywhere! Besides, we’ve always been a little unconventional.”

Marco smiled, pulling Star close. “Unconventional, maybe. But perfect for us.”

As they tucked Luna into bed that night, she whispered, “If it’s a boy, I think Orion is the best name ever.”

Star kissed her on the forehead. “We’ll see, Luna. But I think the baby would love it too.”

In their room, Star and Marco lay side by side, flipping through the notebook of names one more time. Marco glanced at Star and said, “You know, you’re right. Orion does feel magical. Just like you.”

Star grinned, reaching for his hand. “And just like this little one will be.”
