you tired eyes flit across James' equally tired figure as he sits in the chair beside the bed you're currently laying on. " i'll take first watch, you need to rest. " he had insisted. and while you agree, you just can't seem to close your eyes. maybe it's the fright, the horror that had been happening the past few days.

James timidly turns to face you. " what's wrong? " he asks in a gentle tone. some underlying struggle laced along with the gentleness, as if he doesn't want to disturb you by speaking too loudly.

you shake your head, turning on your side to fully face him. " can't seem to close my eyes, " you huff. " just a bit ago i couldn't keep them open, now i can't seem to keep them closed. " you chew on your cheek, a bad habit.

James nods, letting out a sigh that makes you feel understood. " the peace is almost unnerving compared to the usual noise, maybe that's it? " he offers, his head tilted a little.

you shrug, mulling it over. you adjust your head against the stiff and dusty pillow, yawning. " yeah, that's probably it. " you trail off, the calm conversation slowly easing you.

James seems to notice that too, his eyes timidly watching over you. " the silence sometimes feels deafening to me, " he starts, glancing the front door of the decaying motel room. " it's almost as if without the loud wind and monstrous sounds, it feels even more unsafe. " he muses out loud.

you hum in response, eyes drooping as you listen to his thoughts. " i suppose i've gotten used to the sounds, as if they've become a sort of background noise to me. " he continues, his eyes flitting back to your figure.

the corners of his lips quirk up slightly as he watches you fall asleep, your breathing slowing down. he sighs quietly, his eyes occasionally flitting between you and the front door.

he only offered to take 'first watch' to assure you that you could rest. he had already decided that when he'd suggested it, that he'd keep watch while you rested, and get going once you woke up again.

his eyes dart across your peaceful face, a look he hasn't seen on you yet due to the horrors and infrequent peace of this town. it looks good on you, he decides. it's a look that suits you much better than the frowns and wide eyes from fear.

he sighs again, leaning his head back against the wall, starting to slowly dread the moment when you wake up and your soft, peaceful expression is replaced by a worried or scared one.
