There has been a thought lingering in my mind for days and even though I’m sure you’re sick of my “Bayern (transfer) related complaining”, I still wanted to look at this properly.
Let’s start with the thought, which can be easily summed up with one phrase: “I’m not sure if I’m ready for a Bayern without its core legends (Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger), without players who love the club to the core (Holger Badstuber) or without players who genuinely care (Xabi Alonso) - but WITH opportunictic players instead (Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels).”
I know, I know, I know, I have been complaining about these two in particular lots of times, but hear me out. This may sound like a bunch of alternate facts to some of you, but with many transfer decisions since “Pep era”, I feel like things have gone in a worrisome direction.
1.) Bringing up youth/young (German) players. Like. Seriously. If I look at players who COULD have been great if they were just brought up correctly, with enough patience and will to integrate them... There’s a reason why people are complaining about Müller and Alaba (AND BADSTUBER) being the only players that really made it from Bayern’s youth team. But let’s look at the list of (fairly) young players, some from Bayern’s youth, some bought from other teams, that simply did not make it or were dragged away SINCE “Pep era”: Emre Can, Jan Kirchhoff, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (not German, but you get the point), Lukas Raeder, Sinan Kurt, Mitchell Weiser, Julian Green (I’m not even sure if he’s still siogned with us anymore because He was loaned out SO MUCH), Sebastian Rode, (kinda) Mario Götze, Gianluca Gaudino... YES, I KNOW that not everybody can make it at this club and that the pressure has torn some of these players apart, but the lack of players who made it AT ALL is still scary. As for now, we have Joshua Kimmich as a shining example of HOW a player can get successfully inegrated into the first team. And as we see with cases like Coman and Costa, it can still be frustrating to fight for a regular spot if players like Ribéry and Robben (thankfully) keep coming back strong. But we’re gonna NEED the young players in the future, so they NEED to get brought up properly, preferably with at least SOME commitment (and without managers that apparently drag them to complain in public about a lack of playing time. Again, we know that it’s tough to give all players suitable playing time, but by god, the attempts to get more through the media have never really ended well...). It’ll get more and more apparent and if the retirements of Lahm and Alonso aren’t a wake up call... I don’t know what is.
2.) Selling/Dragging away players that were deserving. This is more of a personal issue, but I’m still bitter not really over players like Gomez, Mandzukic or Dante (who also faced a personal crisis) getting dropped. Yes, one might argue they may not have fit into Pep’s system, but let’s be real, there were PERSONAL quarrels that dragged them away. And I’m pretty sure that goes for several of the younger players mentioned above (and others such as Nils Petersen) (This doesn’t really include players who wanted “a new adventure”, such as Pizarro, but I still cannot help but feel that things SHOULD have been handled differently with Schweinsteiger. I’m still not over that half assed farewell, and I’m more than convinced that it was NOT his fault.)
3.) Transfers that nobody understands vs. transfers I personally don’t approve of. Oh boy. Believe me, I, as many of you are, am 200% proud of Holger doing his own thing, trying to get stronger without complaining for a single moment. And yes, I know that he decided on the loan for his own sake, but by God... Why exactly did we sign Süle (AND RUDY FOR THAT MATTER) again??? Also, I have a soft spot for Tasci (because of 2010), but I never understood why exactly we loaned him out... And as you all know, I’m still not over signing a players who turned us down once and is a diving ass and another who kept building up a negative narrative about us for years, but... Yeah, that tackle may have been life saving, I’ll give him that, but people treating him like a flawless king every single time is simply beyond me. I know that players have always come to us due to the prestige. But not all who come can grow into this - into the expectations especially, but if you look at players like Neuer and Boateng who have worked their asses off after coming to us and never claimed not to know what “Mia San Mia” means, while having players who KEEP diving and keeping up the bad reputation... I don’t even know. I personally can’t identify with that and the whole “we need to be internationally appealing” approach, although that’s a thing other teams have to deal with as well these days. (Also: Boateng and Neuer are no angels either, but they still did a great job integrating into our team and becoming genuine leaders.)
Sure, there were great transfers, such as Thiago. Alonso of course. Bernat is so promising. (Edit: I forgot Satan. My bad.) And we’ll see if Costa and Coman will find the will to stay and fight for/with us, without getting tempted by ~bigger offers.
Tl;dr: I have no idea what the team will look like without the ones that are leaving. I don’t want to think about it yet. People need to stop burdening Kimmich like that, calling him “the next Lahm”. Because no. There can’t be a “next” Lahm, because the one we have is unique and irreplacable. Things will change. They have to change. As for now, I don’t know if they will for the better.

FCM-Trainer Michael Oenning muss in Bochum allerdings improvisieren.
