#Luka Bayonetta

I’m very late to the Bayonetta shipping discourse, but in a fandom dominated by scorned BayoJeanne shippers, I wanna throw my hat in the ring and say why I prefer BayoLuka.

Put simply, I think it’s really rare to see a canon m/f ship where the woman is unabashedly the cool dominant one in the relationship. Think about how many pairs there are of fangirls swooning after big, burly superhero men, damsels rescued by knights in shining armor, or an action couple with similar power levels (but, y’know, the guy is The Main One™ of the two). There’s nothing wrong with those types of ships, but you can’t deny that they’re everywhere.

That’s why I like Bayonetta and Luka’s dynamic so much. They’re unabashedly not that.

Bayonetta is an angel slaughtering powerhouse, child of prophecy, last of her kind. She punched god herself into the sun. Luka is a guy with a grappling hook.

Whereas Bayonetta literally dances around her opponents in a fight, graceful and effortlessly as she beats these divine beings to a pulp, Luka can’t help but trip over himself or slam headfirst into a brick wall. When Luka threatens to “expose” Bayonetta in the first game, she responds by cheekily flirting with him or saving his life from an unseen threat. Bayonetta literally controls her clothes while Luka’s scarf often slaps his face in the wind.

Cheshire, the pet name she gives him, both solidifies that she sees him as cute and harmless as a kitten and implies he has more sentimental value to her than she initially lets on. It was the name of her favorite childhood stuffed animal, after all.

For the record I have nothing against BayoJeanne. It’s an okay ship. They just don’t have that special draw for me

Instead of playing as Bayo while exploring, we should have side chapters where we explore as Luka, not in Strider form. Would be cool too play as him too.

I don’t think viola was done right. Let’s start off with her combat, it’s clunky and annoying that we don’t get more opportunities to have more weapons. We have a dodge button and a parry button, but only the parry activates witch time, maybe we should have both things do that or don’t have both options. While I’m not fond of the parrying mechanic, it does seem in character for viola to brute force through every battle. I would love more weapons too, while her weapons would probably be weaker because she’s not as experienced with them, I would’ve loved the variety. I also think it would’ve been interesting to see viola interact with other demons, some of Jeanne’s would’ve been kinda cool. I believe that the china version of Jeanne died, so it would be kinda cool to see Jeanne’s contract demon wandering around and meets up with viola. We also know that Jeanne died in the Japan universe, and not even bayonetta got to meet up with her demon like she had in Egypt. I think like boxing gloves would’ve been a cool addition to viola’s arsenal.

Now onto her overall plot relevance. It kinda feels like they added viola because they had to have a child that bayonetta guides, which would’ve been better if viola was being mentored by bayonetta and had even more plot relevance. Yes viola told bayonetta the whole run down, but I’m sure Luka would’ve done a similar thing since he kinda shows up in random universes. Viola’s and bayonetta’s relationship is made even more unimportant with the lack of interaction. Also it wouldn’t have mattered if viola told bayonetta that she was her alternate universe’s daughter. If anything it would’ve forced bayonetta to try to guide viola, because she too lost her mother and viola assumably had lost her mom. They lack bonding time together. We don’t get to go deep into viola’s thoughts and emotions. I think it would've been better if the reason why viola chases after luka is because SHE'S the one that suggests that she chases after luka. which would be a better split up reason the "oops, have fun i guess" also the story of viola being part faerie lacks importance. like it just happens and probably would've been better if luka explains to Viola that his father used to claim that they descended from faeries. i think i would've preferred if the mystery was "who's viola's father". but regardless the mystery doesn't matter so even if it was basically revealed that luka is Viola's daughter early on, it wouldn't have mattered, but it would've forced us to care more about viola early on rather then them forcing on this concept at the end of the game. also imma just say it now, that the reveal that luka's family supposedly descended from faeries would've helped clue into the player that the wolfman is luka.
