Blog Post Week 6
Should video games be more heavily regulated?
Video games can have problematic messaging such as those the game mentioned in the article The Revenge of the Yellowfaced Cyborg Terminator by Jeffery A. Ow, where there are prevalent themes of inflicting wanton violence and performing acts that would be looked down upon in the real world. However, in the virtual world these actions are nothing but an interesting experience for people to try. Even games with messages about combatting dictatorships such as the Far Cry series still allows players to perform violent acts, with the nature of free choice in video games allowing any gamer to choose whether they want to act as a hero or not. One could simply choose not to play the game’s missions and story and instead just go around being violent. The free choice that comes with these games allows people to lessen stress and safely explore evil and good actions in a safe manner. The benefits of free choice in these games makes it imperative that video games are not more heavily regulated.
Should websites be monitored for fake information?
The internet’s inherent danger makes it imperative that those using the internet pay attention to what is being said and to not immediately believe everything that they read. While most people who use the internet are aware of this, many individuals such as those who are younger or elderly fail to remember this rule. Due to this, I believe that websites should be forced to allow readers to add an opinion to the article to highlight if they view the information as misleading or false. This would be helpful to fight white supremacist websites such as the one mentioned in Ludo-Orientalism and the Gamification of Race by Fickle. This would be similar to Instagram’s feature where readers can add a note to the article for other readers.
Should problematic games be held liable for dangerous actions?
Video games may have problematic themes and encourage players to perform problematic actions to progress the story, but creators shouldn’t be held liable for people playing their games who may be influenced by these messages to an unintended degree. If someone mentally ill were to play a video game and believe that it was telling them to act out what they are doing in a violent game in the real world, it is not the creator’s fault as no reasonable person would have done this. It is the responsibility of those who look after such an individual or raise them to teach them the difference between games and the real world and educate them as to not act out what they see in the game in real life.
How should parents prevent children from forming dangerous mindsets?
Parents should prevent children from forming dangerous mindsets that may stem from playing violent games or going to problematic websites such as those mentioned in the previously discussed articles by monitoring their children’s online and real world activity and through educating their children about the differences between games and the real world and how there can be false websites designed to mislead them into dangerous viewpoints.

Accessibility: You can play Ludo anytime, anywhere, on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. All you need is an internet connection.
Global Competition: Online Ludo connects you with players worldwide, allowing you to test your skills against new opponents and enhance your gameplay.

Chat and Emojis: Stay engaged with your opponents by chatting or sending fun emojis during the game.
Leaderboards and Rewards: Compete for a spot on global leaderboards and earn rewards or bonuses as you climb the ranks.
Tips to Improve Your Ludo Online Gameplay
Although Ludo is a game of chance, involving rolling the dice, strategy still plays a significant role. Here are some tips to help you perform better:
Balance Between Offense and Defense: While it's tempting to rush your pieces to the finish line, remember that eliminating your opponent's pieces can set them back and give you an advantage.
Timing is Key: Knowing when to take risks and when to play it safe can make all the difference in a match.
Keep an Eye on Your Opponent: Anticipating your opponent’s moves can help you protect your pieces from being captured.
Why Play Ludo Online with Friends?
The social aspect of Ludo is one of the primary reasons for its enduring popularity. Playing online allows you to stay connected with friends and family, even when you can’t physically be together. Many online platforms allow you to invite your friends to private matches or team up against other players.
Conclusion
Playing Ludo online is a perfect way to enjoy the classic game in the digital age. With easy access, global competition, and exciting features, it’s no wonder this timeless game is more popular than ever. Whether you’re playing casually or aiming to top the leaderboards, online Ludo offers endless entertainment for everyone.

Blog post #5
What are the differences between the social constructionist views of race and how are they different from the biological view?
Social constructionist views of race state that there is no biological of genetic basis for dividing people by racial groups, but rather it is a social construct that the majority of people simply agree on. This view supports the idea that people do acknowledge that racial categorization does exist but is more based on cultural reinforcement rather than the genetics of people themselves which has a huge effect those people and how they go on and live their lives. On the other hand, the biological perspective of race as the name states links race to the biological and genetical differences of each racial group. This perspective leads to the common misconception of assuming people who share the same genetic traits such as skin color, hair, eye shape etc., all fit into the same categories leading to the development of stereotypes and the creation of systemic inequalities.
How did Pokémon GO unveil the social and physical boundaries that we have between races and how people are perceived when crossing those boundaries?
Pokémon GO is a game based hugely on using your location to create a game experience for you and as part of the game it makes certain Pokémon exclusive to certain areas, some of which may be in areas that people might not be accustomed to going to. For example, “Minority players described being the target of suspicious glances while playing in pre-dominantly white neighborhoods; suburban children were cautioned against straying into bad" neighborhoods; an Asian American grandfather, the game's first casualty, was shot for alleged trespassing while playing near a Virginia country club” (Fickle). This example shows that those who play are exposed to environmental situations where race plays a large role in what they experience, some are able to roam freely as the game intended but there are others who actively avoid certain areas due to that area’s reputation or because of the people who live there and how they may react to someone not from there making the player uncomfortable.
Why is the invisibility of race in cyberspace a misleading notion?
It’s a misleading notion because even though the visual aspect of people’s identity isn’t brought with them online, they bring with them their experiences and biases which still heavily affects the influences of race online even though it’s not visually apparent.
What role does online anonymity in cyberspace play in discussions about race and identity?
Anonymity on one hand allows people to have more open discussions about their identity without fear of repercussions however, this could also cause people to express more toxic views without facing any accountability for anything they say.

How does race online differ from race in the real world, and what does this mean for digital identity?
Race online is different than in the real world because its more common online world as there are no real faces behind the screen. No one questions each other because they use online games and screens to their advantage to be racist and not be told anything because of how common it is. Since its common those that know it is wrong might not speak up because they might be attacked by those that are racist. In the real world those that are racist are always judged by their the words they speak and even shame them for the way they treat others. They are able to confront in the real world more easily because its face-to-face. Digital Identity can vary but I do beleive that those that are online change the way they are to be either a fake version or real version of themselves. Theres no inbetween because they have that choice and I feel like its a either a all or nothing situation.
How do Asian characters in media reinforce or challenge stereotypes, and how does this affect global perceptions of Asians?
In The Revenge of the Yellow-Faced Cyborg Terminator, Jeffery A. Ow explains how Asian characters often encourage harmful racail sterotypes. These sterotypes are negative assumtions of Asians and can be very dehumanized because they compare them to robots. The impact of these sterotypes that still influences global perceptions and makes them out to be complicated people that are perfect in some ways? These views still affect Asians because they are put these standards that others just have of them because thats what "Asians are" which is so unfair to be put on this standard that just came from a stereotype.
How does "ludo-orientalism" explain the link between race and gaming, and how might games influence how players view race?
Ludo-orientalism is a new word that I found interesting which refers to how video games incorporate sterotypes in exotic and mysterious games. These games use racial or markers to create a sterotypical character in the game or enviroments which is seen by those who play the video games. They set these sterotypes as normal and shape how the players view of racism and sterotypes towards them. It can start to persaude biased views of these groups and start to show in the real world. These games and media play a huge role in the real world as more and more children are using social media and can start to change the way they think as normal behavior.
How do online spaces, media, and games both reinforce and change ideas about race, and what can be done to improve representation?
Online spaces both reinforce and reshape ideas about race. In online spaces, in Race in Cyberspace, users can mask or manipulate racial identities, which can challenge traditional views but also lead to racism and stereotypes. People may experiment with identity, but these environments often carry over real-world biases limiting true racial freedom. As these are views of the creator of the game. Jeffery A. Ow’s The Revenge of the Yellow-Faced Cyborg Terminator highlights how media continues to reinforce stereotypes about Asian people. Despite some progress in diverse representation, harmful depictions of race persist in movies and TV, which shapes how audiences view race globally as common. The concept of "ludo-orientalism" in the gamification of race shows how video games often use and reinforce racial stereotypes. These simplified depictions influence how players engage with race in both the virtual world and reality, sometimes reinforcing negative ideas. To improve representation, digital spaces need conscious efforts to include diverse voices and stories, accurately representing different cultures and races. This requires challenging stereotypes, promoting authentic narratives, and a more inclusive environment in cyberspace environments.

What are some ways we see online racism being implemented in video games, and what is the impact it has on gamers?
In the Ted Talk by Dr. Lisa Nakamura, it is mentioned that one form of racism that is circulating is visual profiling and voice profiling. With the rise of people using headsets and mics to communicate, it was a way for people to find out more about each other, especially in video games. Visual profiling is when gamers make judgments based on another player's avatar design. Voice profiling is also making judgments based on another gamer's voice. This is problematic because it creates environments that are toxic by reinforcing stereotypes through online gaming. This affects people's mental health even if we don't realize and can diminish peoples online experience.
What is a real-word example of online discrimination in video games?
There is a clip shown in the Ted talk of a guy playing Halo who decided to change his name and just join a lobby where other users are waiting with mics to talk and it is a space where you see everyone else's user ID. His new user ID is xxxgayboyxxx. It is important to keep in mind Xbox is a commercial space although it is not regulated by any sort of people. In the video of the terrible comments, people were saying things like: you are going to burn in hell, i hope gay marriage never gets past, and f*** you. All these nasty comments simply because of his name change.
When talking about gaming culture, in what ways do stereotypes about Asians shaper how they are portrayed?
Stereotypes about Asians are influenced heavily in gaming culture by creating a double image. That they are hard workers, almost "workaholics" and that they are seriously great gamers. This leads to the perception/stereotype that they are seriously competitive and cannot have fun and simply enjoy themselves. It creates almost a misconception that they always approach any activity with the same seriousness as work rather than relaxing and doing activities for the fun of it.
How does race interact with social identities in the gaming world?
When race crosses with gender, class or sexuality, it affects how players interact with one another and the dynamics of various gaming communities work. Online interactions usually lead to racial discrimination, which is something that seems to be heavy on pretty much any online/social platform. It is said that in the gaming world, white straight men are privileged shaping who is included and who is not represented in the gaming community. This highlight how complex identities can be and the use of power within video game communities.

Do Games Promote Game Characters Equally?
In the article "Race in Cyberspace," it is argued that virtual environments, including video games, can reinforce many racial stereotypes and inequalities seen in the real world. Most popular games are typically promoted with a white male character as the hero, while minorities are often portrayed as villains or depicted in poverty. The options for customizing an avatar are limited for many individuals in numerous games, reflecting a lack of awareness and biases among developers. Games and virtual reality have the power to connect people, but many times, they fall short in providing equal representation. We may not realize the inequality and discrimination emphasized in cyberspace, but our online interactions can negatively impact marginalized communities.
How Do Stereotypes in Video Games Become So Exaggerated?
Jeffrey A. Ow's article, "The Revenge of the Yellowfaced Cyborg Terminator: The Rape of Digital Geishas and the Colonization of Cyber-Coolies in 3D Realms' Shadow Warrior," critiques how Asian characters in games like Shadow Warrior are represented through exaggerated portrayals of Asian culture. Many times, these games are developed by individuals who do not represent the Asian community, lacking the ability to incorporate input from non-Asian creators. Games like Shadow Warrior reflect the Western stereotypes that have arisen from the historical context of colonization and racism perpetuated by Western countries. The media has a history of portraying Asians and minorities through stereotypes, exploiting them in entertainment for the benefit of power and wealth.
Can Innocent Games Contribute to Stereotypes?
Tara Fickle's article "Ludo-Orientalism and the Gamification of Race" explores how video games and gaming technologies contribute to racial stereotypes. Characters from specific cultures or races may be designed in ways that align with long-standing, harmful stereotypes. These biases can reinforce negative perceptions of race and culture, shaping players' views of the world both inside and outside the game. For example, minorities playing Pokémon GO in predominantly white neighborhoods were often profiled and warned against entering areas deemed "dangerous," while white players had more freedom to explore without the same level of scrutiny. Innocent games can still contribute to real-world discrimination, revealing the complex ways in which digital interactions affect societal issues.

How does the description of cyberspace as a “constructive environment” relate to the ideas of embodiment and disembodiment?
Kolko, Nakamura, and Rodman’s description of race as a “constructive environment” suggests that how an individual identifies themself takes on the greatest importance in cyberspace. This is because participation online requires the individual to develop an online presence for themself, including describing what they would like to be called. This relates to the ideas of embodiment and disembodiment because of the common misconception that an individual’s online presence allows them to develop a separate identity from their real life. In actuality, a person’s real life experiences shape their behavior and responses to behavior, including in cyberspace.
How do privilege and the digital divide impact the cyberfeminist movement?
Cyberfeminism is often thought of as a unifying movement surrounding a common experience of gender inequality in the digital age. As Ow points out, however, including all women in the cyberfeminist movement neglects the ideas of privilege and the digital divide, because doing so fails to acknowledge that not all women, namely women residing in third-world countries, have access to online spaces. This inclusive cyberfeminist view perceives internet access as a commonality rather than the privilege of wealthy women in the first-world. It rejects the digital divide, which states that different groups will have various levels of internet access depending on their socioeconomic status.
In what ways does the concept of colonialism influence video game development?
As Ow describes, the structure of video games is largely based around prejudiced ideas. For example, the concept of advancing from world to world, collecting items and killing enemies, is rooted in the colonizer perspective. Additionally, Ow makes note of how character development in games is based on the advancement of the character’s weaponry rather than psychology. All of these themes can be traced back to colonialism, revealing a colonizer-centric viewpoint that is expressed through video games which desensitizes players to damaging ideas.
What are some problems with attempting to separate “play” in cyberspace from real-world social issues?
Oftentimes, people will attempt to separate digital “play”, such as video gaming, from real-world issues like racism. In doing so, they make the assumption that prejudice does not exist in these online spaces, because it separates people from the real world. This is in fact not true, because a person’s experience in a digital space is influenced by their lived experiences, including prejudice they may face from people around them. Fickle uses the example of Pokemon Go to demonstrate how the experience of the same game across different races can vary significantly. She describes how many minority players were racially profiled when playing the game, receiving suspicious looks, or were assumed to be trespassing.

Fascinating Facts About the Ludo Game
Ludo is not just a game; it's a cultural phenomenon that spans generations and continents. This board game, beloved by both children and adults alike, offers a delightful mix of luck and strategy. As we explore Ludo’s historical roots, its evolution, and its current global significance, we will uncover the unique mechanics and rules that define the game. Further, we'll delve into the psychological and social benefits it imparts and how it has transitioned seamlessly into the digital age. Finally, we’ll share some fun trivia and lesser-known facts about Ludo, celebrating its rich history and widespread appeal.
Historical Origins
Originating from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, Ludo was transformed into the game we know today by the British in the late 19th century. The original Pachisi was a complex game involving cloth boards, cowrie shells, and intricate rules, played by Indian royalty. This game was adapted to the simpler, dice-based Ludo, patented in England in 1896, which aimed to be accessible to a broader audience. Through this transformation, Ludo retained the core concept of moving pieces based on dice rolls but introduced a simplified board layout and rules that appealed to families, especially in the Western world.
Global Appeal
Ludo has become a household staple across the globe, thanks to its straightforward gameplay that requires minimal setup and can be understood by players of all ages. Different countries and cultures have adapted Ludo, incorporating local elements and rules to create regional variations. For example, in some Caribbean nations, Ludo boards are beautifully hand-painted with vibrant colors, reflecting local artistic styles. These variations not only demonstrate Ludo’s adaptability but also its ability to integrate into and celebrate diverse cultures.
Game Mechanics and Rules
Ludo is played on a square board divided into a grid, with a distinct path leading from each player’s base to the center home triangle. Ludo Players take turns rolling a single die, moving their four pawns out of their home base and around the board to the finish line, while also attempting to capture and send back opponents' pawns. The requirement to roll a six to start, combined with the strategic decisions involved in capturing others and safeguarding one’s own pawns, adds depth to what seems like a simple race. This balance of luck and strategy makes Ludo endlessly replayable and engaging.
Psychological and Social Benefits
Ludo is more than entertainment; it's a tool for cognitive development and social interaction. The game requires players to think ahead, predict opponents' moves, and strategically plan their journey across the board, sharpening decision-making and problem-solving skills. Socially, Ludo encourages family bonding and friendship over competitive yet friendly gameplay. It fosters communication and team-building skills, as players often team up in pairs for a more collaborative experience.
Digital Transformation of Ludo
The rise of the internet and mobile gaming platforms has given traditional board games like Ludo a new lease on life. Online platforms allow players from different geographical locations to compete against each other, bringing the community closer together. Digital versions of Ludo, such as those offered by platforms like Zupee, maintain the essence of traditional Ludo while introducing new elements like online leaderboards, multiplayer options, and virtual Ludo tournaments. These platforms provide a space where Ludo enthusiasts can compete at a higher level and engage with a global community.
Fun Trivia and Lesser-Known Facts
Ludo has been part of some intriguing historical anecdotes. For instance, during World War I, British soldiers played Ludo to pass the time in the trenches, modifying the board to be foldable and pocket-sized. Additionally, despite its reputation as a children's game, Ludo has seen competitive play among adults with organized tournaments that showcase the game's strategic depth.
Conclusion
Ludo's enduring appeal lies in its simplicity and the deep connection it fosters among players. From its royal Indian roots to its modern digital form, Ludo has evolved while still retaining its core characteristics that appeal to human psychology and social interaction. Whether played on a physical board with family or through an online platform with strangers, Ludo continues to be a source of joy, learning, and connection. This timeless game is a testament to the simple pleasures that can bring people together, encouraging more individuals to explore and enjoy the myriad benefits that Ludo has to offer.
