The animals soul was removed so the soul of the Nummo could be incorporated into the created being. The excised soul was the termite hill that was cut down. It was because of this artificial union between the Nummo and the Earth that the Jackal ended up being born single-sexed and soulless. It was also why the dual Nummo soul, which was added during the first experiment, was eventually removed from humans.

The removal of the Nummos' soul became associated with the ritual of circumcision in the Dogon religion. The second sex was symbolized as the second soul and it's eventual removal was done to help stabilize humans. The second soul was represented by the clitoris in girls and the prepuce in boys. The second soul was not completely severed after circumcision, however, but became associated with the unconscious and was the spiritual connection humans still had with the Nummo.
