ugh i need to make a mermaid conlang
#I wordvomited a spinoff of Lucie to my friend over text a few nights ago#and it involves.... a mermaid character#I mean Lucie does as well BUT#Lucie was adopted at birth and never learned the languag!! i didn't have to deal with that!!#“but manti just Don't Do That” absolutely not#i can't name characters without a basic understanding of their background/language#i've been trying to think of how a mermaid language would work#like literally at the phonetic level#would they have vowels and consonants??#or are the phonemes more like#dolphin chirping and/or whale song#it would probably be at least a LITTLE tonal because yk sound carries thru water#but tonal languages scare me a bit (bcs they are cool and complex and i am too dumb)#my mermaids are bioluminscent but I think the light signals would be like... gestures#not actually words#I also played with the idea of music-as-language#(so like... notes carrying lexical meaning)#which is a cool concept but i do NOT have the time to develop it into smth I can use!!#I just want to be able to make enough of this language that I can realistically name characters#is that too much to ask#writing#lol
