Antoine Bourseiller and Corinne Marchand in Cléo From 5 to 7 (AgnÚs Varda, 1962) Cast: Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller, Dominique Davray, Dorothée Blanck, Michel Legrand, José Luis de Vilallonga, Loye Payen, Lucienne Marchand, Serge Korber. Screenplay: AgnÚs Varda. Cinematography: Paul Bonis, Alain Levent, Jean Rabier. Production design: Jean-François Adam. Film editing: Pascale LaverriÚre, Janine Verneau. Music: Michel Legrand. Has any director ever so successfully combined the keen editorial eye of the documentary filmmaker with the storytelling gifts of the creator of fictional films as AgnÚs Varda? From the beginning, with the vivid setting of the small Mediterranean fishing community of La Pointe Courte (1955) serving as background and correlative for the troubles of a married couple, Varda has known how to reverse Marianne Moore's formula of "imaginary gardens with real toads in them" and tell stories about imaginary people in real places. The real place in Cléo From 5 to 7 is the city of Paris, where Varda continually finds ways to enhance her slice-of-life story of pop-singer Cléo, waiting out the results of a medical test that she is sure will doom her to death from cancer. When her protagonist leaves the sanctuary of her apartment and wanders the streets of the city, Varda continually finds little bits of memento mori to insert into the frame, such as the Pompes FunÚbres sign on a mortician's place of business that we glimpse from the windows of the bus in which Cléo is riding. It's not done with a heavy hand, but rather with a slyly macabre irony, for Cléo is as much a target of Varda's wry humor as she is an object of concern. We glimpse her vanity and frivolity and superstition while we also feel sympathy with her anxiety and fear of death.

âTake another card,â a fortune teller (Loye Payen) instructs the tearful young woman (Corinne Marchand) sitting across the table from her at the start of AgnĂšs Vardaâs 1962 film ClĂ©o from 5 to 7.
The film follows the beautiful and spoilt singer Cléo between the hours of 5pm and 6.30pm as she wanders around the streets of early 1960s Paris while she awaits the results of a hospital test.
Ostensibly a simple tale, it becomes a moving portrait of a young woman whose frilly, coiffed exterior belies her inner turmoil and anxieties about her own mortality.
Mirrors are ClĂ©oâs personal drug, irresistible and often capable of raising her spirits in a way nothing else can. In a shop, admiring herself in a succession of hats, she muses, âEverything suits me. Trying things on intoxicates me.â
Like any addiction, however, her obsession with her appearance is as destructive as it is pleasurable. Vain though she is, sheâs also terribly, terribly insecure, even about her treasured good looks.  âEveryone spoils me. No one loves me.â  âMy unchanging dollâs face⊠This ridiculous hatâŠâ she thinks as she stands before a mirror hanging in a window. âI canât see my own fears. I thought everyone looked at me. I only look at myself.â
The film is the work of the trailblazing writer/director/editor/hair-style icon and all-around auteur Agnes Varda.  The Belgium born filmmaker began her film career in the 1950s as part of the French New Wave, specifically The Left Bank. Like the famed French New Wavers, The Left Bank created films that were experimental in their form and content, breaking the mold created by the Hollywood Studios.
The film contains a documentary-esque realism that captures the zeitgeist of the 1960s Parisian aesthetic while retaining its relentless first person narrative. Because Cleo is waiting, she has ample time to simply watch. And as she watches, we (the audience) watch through her. Thanks to Vardaâs career as photojournalist, Paris is filmed with an almost clinical precision. In real time, we are privy to its posh bistros and quaint cafes, Â its young lovers and old enemies, its beautiful people and dirty pigeons. Paris is not only romanticized by the camera but also serves as distraction from possible imminent disaster. Itâs breathing, yet numb â just like Cleo as she waits for answers. And in this waiting, in this watching, Cleo grows as a character.
