One Thing I Learned From Each Track on Lover
1. I Forgot That You Existed:
Sometimes the people that you think are going to be there forever end up showing you their true colors in times when you need them most. Just because youâre committed to sticking by them through the good and the bad, doesnât mean that theyâre willing to do the same. You donât have to hate each other, you donât have to fight, you can just move on: Indifference.
âIt isnât love, it isnât hate itâs just indifference.â
2. Cruel Summer:
There will always be a newer, shinier, better version of what you may already have. Itâs a good reminder that what you want might now be the best thing for you.
âDevils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes.â
3. Lover:
When youâre with the right person for you, you feel safe, valued and heard. You can travel through life with a set of rules thats unique to your relationship and your relationship only. Nothing else matters.
âThis is our place, we make the rules.â
4. The Man:
To put it simply, human beings are not all equal in some peopleâs eyes. Minorities have to work twice as hard to get to the same point as someone more privileged. And even if/when you get there, your successes are still questioned.
âThey wouldnât shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve.â
5. The Archer:
Recognize who you are at face value: the good, the bad and the ugly. Acknowledge your weaknesses and start to take ownership. Youâre worthy of love and kindness, but if you donât work on the flaws within yourself, no one will stay for what you have to offer.
âWho could ever leave me darlinâ, but who could stay?â
6. I Think He Knows:
If your heart isnât skipping beats, it ainât it sis. That feeling of butterflies every time you see someone is so important in a relationship. That sense of longing someone and missing them when you just left them an hour ago; thatâs something special.Â
âYouâve got my heartbeat, skippinâ down 16th Avenue.â
7. Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince:
Weâre in a very scary time for many reasons, but a change in the world of politics is vital. We as American citizens need to recognize and stand up ourselves, our communities, and most importantly, those who are unable to fight for themselves.
âAmerican glory, faded before me. Now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress.â
8. Paper Rings:
Love trumps any and everything. If you were to lose all of your material things tomorrow, what would your relationship look like? Would there be a strong foundation of love, respect and loyalty? Or would everything crumble because it wasnât built on those factors? For better or for worse, if you care about someone at the most fundamental level, youâll want to be there for everything.
âI want to drive away with you, I want your complications too, I want your dreary Mondays.â
9. Cornelia Street:
Thereâs no point in playing games - donât way too long to show your hand. Lean in, follow your feelings and donât hold anything back. Passing the chance you have to be vulnerable and reveal your feelings can hurt way more in the end than the idea of being rejected. What if it doesnât work out? But what if it does. Things will fall into place, but you need to help gravity  a little bit on the way down.
âBut then you called, showed your hand. I turned around before I hit the tunnel, sat on the roof, you and I.â
10. Death By A Thousand Cuts:
Sometimes love isnât enough between two people. Sometimes, two people arenât meant for the long haul. People are placed Into your life for certain reasons at certain times to help you change, evolve and grow. The worst goodbye is one you donât have a reason for.
âI look through the windows of this love, even though we boarded them up. Chandelier still flickering here cause I canât pretend itâs okay when its not.â
11. London Boy
Love is supposed to be fun, playful, giddy and make your heart flutter. Showing your significant other your hometown, having them meet your best friends and doing the things you love to do with them is what a relationship is all about. Donât sweat the small stuff and actually enjoy your time together, whatever youâre doing.
âHe likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet, darling I fancy you.â
12. Soon Youâll Get Better
The age-old tale of you donât know what you have until itâs gone. Any loved one with cancer is a terrifying thing, and knowing that your best friend and confidante could be taken away from you at any moment Is a pill that youâll never be able to swallow. Losing my mom to Breast Cancer, this song perfectly, yet simply, Â translates the fear, irrational hope and constant desire to make anything you can better for the person going through this.
âAnd I hate to make this all about me, but who am I supposed to talk to? What am I supposed to do if there's no you?â
13. False God:
Believing in something whole-heartedly doesnât make it true and doesnât make it right. As much as you want to stay on course and take that leap of faith blindly, thereâs more than likely red flags that line the very path that you chose to walk down.
âThey say the road gets hard and you get lost when you're led by blind faith.â
14. You Need To Calm Down:
Focus on yourself: your actions and your actions only. The energy that you put out into the world can have the power to make or break someone and your words matter - use them for good or donât say anything at all.
âYou just need to take several seats and try to restore the peace and control your urges to scream about all the people you hate.â
15. Afterglow
We over-think, over-analyze and over-complicate. We blow things out of proportion, take things the wrong way and hold people accountable for something they didnât do. Maybe you didnât realize, or want to realize, that this is something thatâs on you to fix. Anxiety and insecurity are real and raw parts of any relationship that can hurt both sides if it isnât talked about. Emotions can sometimes get the best of you, but try to recognize when youâre in the wrong.
âHey, itâs all me, in my head. Iâm the one who burned us down, but it's not what I meant. Sorry that I hurt you.â
16. ME!
Value the relationships that are so special and dear to you. Cherish the fact that each relationship in your life is different and unique in their own right - they arenât comparable to each other and they shouldnât be.
âAnd I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me.â
17. Itâs Nice To Have A Friend
You donât know what someone is going through and everyone has battles theyâre fighting daily. Seeing someone in pain or showing emotions can be uncomfortable and it can be hard too gain the nerve to address it. Itâs awkward and uncomfortable. But showing your support through something as simple as holding someoneâs hand can make a world of a difference for someone who is struggling.
âSomething gave you the nerve to touch my hand, itâs nice to have a friend.â
18. Daylight
Not everything on your shoulders is yours to carry. Let go of the things that are weighing you down - make it easier on yourself. You are in control of your emotions and have every right to make your way out of the darkness that surrounds you. Thereâs a bright light waiting for you.
âIâve been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night, and now I see daylight. I only see daylight.â

Cruel Summer Analysis
I was obsessing over Cruel Summer all day yesterday trying to decipher which summer Taylor is referring to -- if it's even about a specific one at all. And I've decided that it's not autobiographical like a lot of the Reputation songs were. There's no clear event that led to this; it's just her narrating her life experience and emotions through a killer song. Before the album even came out, there were speculations that the song was a reference to the infamous summer of 2016, where everything that could have gone wrong did. But if that were true, then that would make the song about Tom, which doesn't add up. 1. "I don't want to keep secrets/just to keep you." Their relationship wasn't secret at all. The media infiltrated so much of it that people started nasty rumors that they were just together for publicity, and based on Tom's 2017 commentary about it (https://www.gq.com/story/tom-hiddleston-cover-profile), the pressure of being in the public eye was too much for them to handle. Bless Tom for sticking up for Taylor. 2. "I snuck in through the garden gate every night/that summer/Just to seal my fate." These lines make Joe the more likely candidate....except he and Taylor started dating in the fall of 2016, not the summer (because she was with Tom at the time). And I highly doubt that the instability of Cruel Summer's summer relationship could apply to Taylor and Joe after being together for 8 months (November - ~June). So the summer of 2017 is also out. What does this mean? We need to do what Taylor wanted us to do and stop trying to assign each song a muse "as if the inspiration for music is as simple and basic as a paternity test." I'm guilty of this, and you probably are too. I LOVE the challenge of interpreting every line and thinking up countless possiblities of what each word could mean. I was an English major, so overanalyzing literature is kinda my thing. But at the end of the day, if Taylor really wanted to share intimate details of her life with us, then she would. She didn't mention names or cities or ages, because that doesn't matter. Her ideas matter; the emotions in her songs matter. And I for one can relate to the feelings of longing, desperation, and anxiety that comes with meeting someone new. You never know how something is going to end, but you'll always remember the way it made you feel.
