“Mm? Oh! That’s yarrow.”

“Uh huh... And what does it do, Medicine Man?”

“It can be used in loads of different ways, but the most common is a salve for wounds. I actually use yarrow leaves in some of my balms. It works wonders- helps take the sting out of the wound. Chamomile is also great for that- and speaking of!”

Alfyn reached over and plucked a small white flower from the earth, roots still attached. “These can be made into a paste and put inside bandages to create a healing pact,” the apothecary said, brown eyes bright with passion and interest.

Therion scanned the ground for more plants that they hadn’t discussed yet.

“What’s this?” He pointed to a cluster of flowers. Their blooms were small and seedlike, bright yellow and their corolla was conical in shape.

“Ah, those are... Shoot, I know ‘em... Goldenrods! They can help bring down inflammation, relieve muscle spasms and tamp down infections. They’re real useful. They sometimes grow in Clearbrook too. Bit more difficult to grow ‘em there than here, what with the humidity difference, but the temperatures are about the same.” Alfyn sat down next to the goldenrods, and Therion fought back the urge to pluck one and tuck it into the apothecary’s scruffy hair- which was out of its ponytail today.

Alfyn smiled up at Therion, and he realised he’d been staring. “...You really know your plants, huh?” He murmured, sitting down opposite Alfyn. The other chuckled, running a hand through his thick blonde hair. “Yeah, well... I kinda gotta be. I’m the resident Medicine Man, after all. Gotta take care a’ my folks.” He smiled good-naturedly at Therion, who felt his heart skip a beat.

Those three, cursed words were positioned on the tip of his tongue. He was prepared to risk it all if, even just for a moment, he could indulge himself in the warmth of Alfyn’s love. If he could revel in the comfort of his embrace.

“...Whatcha thinkin’ about, Theri?”

Alfyn’s voice, so gentle and so patient, was his trigger. His sign to utter the spell and throw himself over the edge- and trust that Alfyn would catch him when he landed.

“I love you, Alfyn. So much.”

Alfyn stared at him for a few beats.

He was falling, he knew it. What kind of falling he was doing, that he was unsure of.

Then, warm, strong arms embraced him.

Alfyn caught him, held him close.

“I love you too, Therion. Gods almighty, I love you too.”

And Therion lost himself to the smell of sweet herbs and fresh-turned soil.
