LightLark by Alex Aster Review

You'll have a much better experience reading Lightlark if you take it for what it is, rather than what the marketing and hype has made it to be.

plot. set in a universe run by cursed realms, lightlark is an island that appears once every century, to host the centennial — a deadly 100-day tournament where the rulers of six realms are invited to compete in order to fulfill the prophecy and eradicate their realms’ curses. the catch? one ruler must die to complete the prophecy, not only dooming them but also their realm as a whole. therefore, the rulers must lie, cheat, and betray in hopes of winning the centennial and assuring their realm’s safety.

Thoughs:

The plottwists in "Lightlark" were absolutely MAD... I for sure did not expect the vast majority of what happened in this book (which was quite a shocker for me because mostly I can predict almost the entire plot of a story...)

For me personally it had the perfect amount of world building. However, I'm also not that "proficient" when it comes to fantasy books, so if you're used to super complex worlds/magic systems, you'll find this one rather banal, I'd assume. Additionally, I have to genuinely admit that I loved all the characters of major importance. Isla owns my heart because of how deeply she cares about her kingdom/realm and people she loves. She is such a caring person while also managing to be super strong and vulnerable at the same time, which is quite rare, in my opinion. Isla was ready to go an extra mile for her principles, people she loves and her morals, which, I'd say, is admirable for and in a protagonist. Also, Isla isn't flawless and mistakes happen in her logic, which like... Nobody is perfect. So I was totally fine with her being overwhelmed and maybe acting impulsively before first reconsidering and trying to find other options, since that's a very "human" thing to do. As for the 2 main male character, I have to say that I liked Oro and Grimshaw pretty much equally. I can't even pick who out of these 2 I liked more because they both had positive and negative character traits and actions. As can be seen, I just love imperfect characters because I think that this is what makes them "perfect" in a way. It's closer to reality when characters aren't flawless. Overall, I think Alex Aster did a really good job. The book is well written (given that it's YA and not adult literature) as well as extremely easy to read due to the flow of the phrases and the intriguing plot. Can I say it was something groundbreaking? Not really. Was I still absolutely invested and did not see most of the plot twists coming? Absolutely.

I’m just a girl that can’t stop talking about paulirulan fail marriage whatever. sorry. sue me.

Today’s random paulirulan brainrot induced psychosis has brought this idea of the perfect person for Irulan to the forefront of my mind. What I find to be so fascinating is the fact that if you were to put Paul on paper to Irulan he is kind of more than her ideal man, like soulmate territory, seriously. I don’t mean this in a made for each other stereotypical romantic kinda of way because that can’t be helped (this is a FAIL marriage). Also they’re both, you know, products of eugenics.

I say this simply because of the fact that Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach and can see through the fabric of time and space. He can look into the past just as much into the future and see whatever he needs. Irulan as a historian would become rightfully obsessed with someone that possessed that type of ability. Which is why I think it’s safe to say even though she came to terms with her love for him I really do feel like part of the reason she dedicates her life to writing Paul’s histories is because (besides it being necessary) she was in proximity with someone that had this extraordinary ability to see into the past in a way she could only ever dream. I feel like this really brings home the tragic aspects of Irulan’s character in a very real way. She doesn’t know how to love or what it truly feels like. Yet you can see why she would come to love Paul, but I don’t know how you would be able to make the case vice versa. What is it about Irulan that Paul would come to love? Her father is the reason for the destruction of House Atriedes, He’s already fallen in love with another woman by the time he meets her, and if we were going by book canon her pride gets in the way of her being a good bene gesserit student so her abilities are subpar. She also poisons Chani so she can’t have kids (something that Paul enables her to do so that Chani can live longer btw since folks like to forget?). This is what makes the movie canon so interesting to me though. Irulan is different in the adaptation.

Irulan has become a good student of the bene gesserit teachings. The former emperor tells her she will be a formidable empress and Paul tells her they will rule over the universe together, it’s all quite different. So while right now I can’t really imagine what it is Paul would come to love about Irulan given the circumstances are different, I think we might be given more insight as to what that would look like (in someway) in this upcoming adaptation of messiah.

He did in certain ways at time saw sakura a trophy in a competion.

How did people take this seriously. A immature boy who grew up without parental guidance.

It took Sasuke throughout this chapter to remind him to do something.

In contrast with other characters there's no questioning what to do. Naruto does two things; will get super mad and go berserk if you mess with Sasuke or Hinata regardless of what point you read in the story

After the Tsunade arc

Now, people say he was sad because how Sakura ran up to. No form this panel Naruto sees that Sasuke was at peace that why we get that "sasuke..you..." he's been through then decides to leave.

If naruto was all that upset about it we would have gotten a flashback to the scene. But then here we are again with Naruto & Iruka eating more concered if Sasuke will become a chunin chapter 172

Then went back to see sasuke smiling as if nothing happened

Even after this to prove my statement he still wants to check on Sasuke & his wellbeing chapter 173

Seen people say Naruto was truly heartbroken during this. Which is not true Naruto always knew Sakura has feelings for Sasuke. If it was that they would have had a flashback to the hospital scene. In truth Naruto understands her too and is hurt because he cares about Sasuke leaving too.

After Pein Arc

In this scene it just shows us how they just incompatible they are. Never being able to console each other ( other then when it comes to sasuke) when it comes down to it. Naruto needs cheering up to & I understand Sakura needs it as well because Tsuande is her teacher.

Naruto never paied attention when Sakura has been feeling down unless it possibly about Sasuke.

If it isn't Team 7 mission related or Sasuke what do they honestly talk about? I've never see them bond about anything else. When it comes down to it there friendship has always been rocky.

Here we have it brought up again the conversation between Naruto & Sai

Couldn't keep his promises... Not only did he not answer the question we have the next time when it's brought up again.

Chapter 470

Naruto telling her it doesn't matter if there a promise between them and if he never made he still chase after Sasuke....

Then what the hell is it then? This just tells us that his "feelings" for Sakura are shallow as hell and fading.

After this it's never brought up again. Normally if the girl you love did a fake confession like this be heartbroken & could never see them again.

But, Naruto acted as if this nothing ever happen. It's never brought up again.

If he really wanted Sakura wouldn't he have ask his mother advice/tips on this?

At the end of it Naruto still doesn't know a damn thing about romance or girls. Why would he? Honestly an orphan at birth will be ignorant to certain situations. Just look at how long it took for Naruto to understand Sasuke.

thinking so much about folklore and evermore nowadays... especially how folklore deals with 'teenage' themes (at least the love triangle) and how easy it is to ask for forgiveness and forgive and just being honest about your feelings after allowing yourself to process it and having an upfront communication about everything including missing the childhood that you had/ the friends you were once close with and being open about it ... while evermore being the adult stories was just unresolved issues, love and infidelity (which is both a young and old age thing yet the way it is handled is so different- perhaps for the better because there is some accountable during the latter stage). and just keeping everything inside never telling anyone how you feel and somehow you're at the restaurant and on the run together (because healing is never linear and always messy). so in the end you have to strip yourself to the basics (your younger self and be a bit fearless and wild) to deal with emotions and life. everything comes out teenage petulance indeed.
