Hey!! I loved your Rinsagi metas and posts. FINALLY someone in the fandom who doesn't infantilize Isagi and sees canon him. Yes Isagi is nice but not like.. nanase level friendly and nice. He's polite but a lil withdrawn and appreciates people's talents but absolutely will not let anyone walk over him. Also,exactly what u said, sadist Dom. Yes please.

And Rin, so many people reduce him to this one-dimensional character who's issues people treat like a joke. When that's not the case? Bachira at least knows his prblms, Rin has no idea at all. Like how horrible does your repression and mental state have to be that the guy that is literally suicidal tells you that you're in a worse place than him. Rin gives off high key depressed vibes.

It's a lot like Post WC kunigami which draws...interesting parallels esp when you look at pre WC kunigami and at how Rin seems a lot happier before the fight. I saw someone make that comparison.

What do you think? How do you think Rin would've been like if Sae had actually bothered explaining instead of what we got?

Also, any opinions on the Itoshi parents? We've only seen half their faces and nothing from them abt their kids's relationship. I mean, it kinda bothers me how we've seen the views of Isagi, Bachira, Chigiri, even Hiori's parents when he's not a main character, Yet we got no input from the Itoshis. Do they just not notice? Are they a bit neglectful esp since they let a 13 yr old Sae go to another country alone? Do they let their kids do whatever they want including fighting for a year? Who knows? I'll love to know your thoughts tho.

Isagi stans, please rise up and help characterise him properly lmao

Stupid long response under the cut, as always.

Rant about my issues with the general fandom characterisation about Isagi. Sorry anon if this isn't what you wanted, I have a lot of Thoughts and Salt where Isagi is concerned, and I am Fandom Old who is growing incredibly sad with how divisive current fandom is over a whole host of things. Skip to Itoshi if you don't wanna read about Isagi + fandom musings. Skip to parents if you wanna read about my thoughts on the family dynamics.

Isagi is, for better or worse, the stock shonen MC. He's enough of a regular guy for the target readers, which are teenage boys, to identify with. As he's the MC, the story overall serves to validate and support him, so long as he fits the themes the author is working on, which for Blue Lock, is the concept of being the best at what you're doing, while also bringing out the best in others, and then working together successfully to achieve goals (i.e. the World Cup).

But, Kaneshiro-sensei's also a strategic writer. Isagi, because he's such a bland self-insert for the most part, combined with how he has a very weird form of Power of Heart, has wound up being an especially attractive character for those who like harem, or reverse-harem series. Which then, for better or worse, brings all the fujoshi fangirls around (the curse of so many attractive characters). But most especially the fujoshi fangirls who are a fan of all x MC ships. I am emphasizing all x MC here, because east Asian/gen Asian fandom, have grown incredibly restrictive and rigid about top x bottom dynamics, which is a whole host of other things and issues to talk about.

Look up any popular shonen jump title, you'll find that these shippers generally have the same tastes, and move around the same fandom circles. You'll usually find them shipping all x MC ships, from Izuku to Tanjirou to Yuuji to Naruto etc. Overall, how they characterise them never deviates all that much. It's the nice, 'innocent', naive, guy who is a bit of a pushover, and who has all the other hot characters wanting to get in their pants. That's where Isagi falls into as well, for these shippers. The more thorny and less 'nice guy' parts of his characterisation gets sanded down, though YMMV whether this is a skill issue by fandom or simply a cultural readership interpretation difference altogether.

On the Itoshi bros:

Yep, Rin has a lot of repression issues. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Rin has no idea at all about his issues (how else would he pick out Bachira's loneliness so quickly lol, also there's some hints from official guidebook), but he definitely lacks self-awareness. I also agree that he and Nagi seem to be on different areas at the spectrum of depression (Nagi being apathetic, Rin being hostile).

If there's anything to parallel Rin and Kunigami, I'd say that it's the 'loss of a dream' and 'loss of companions'. In the manga proper, Rin does seem happier before the fight with Sae, like how Kunigami looked happier pre-WC. However, the light novel shows that Rin was already repressing both himself and his style of football to imitate Sae long before then due to external pressures by his teammates and coach, and even more severely than Isagi, who also didn't have much of a relationship with his own teammates from Ichinan.

If Sae had tried to explain more than that one line about 'the world being vast', they wouldn't have such a strained relationship right now, honestly. While I don't think that Rin would have fully understood what Sae was trying to say because he lacked the experience and perspective, I do think he would have been more supportive, which would have been better overall, for the both of them. They were both idiots that night, lmao, though I do view Sae as having been punished by the narrative when he pushed his dream onto Rin.

About the Itoshi parents:

We know that Rin and Sae presumably used to share a room and a double bed as kids (albeit a fairly spacious one, from the looks of it), which makes me think that they're more likely to be middle class than upper class. Young Rin also accompanied Sae to his soccer practice games, rather than going off for other classes like say, art, which implies that his parents might not have been able to afford it. Sae also walked home with Rin, which further implies that they're parents are busy, though its more of a norm in JP. Possibly a double income household, to fund Sae, and later, Rin's coaching fees and time with the youth football squad. Also a household that seems to have no qualms about Sae, and later, Rin's rudeness and hostility, although they may tone it down around their parents. Sae must have picked his attitude up from somewhere.

I'm reluctant to call the Itoshi parents sending Sae to Madrid at 13 as intentionally neglectful, because there are cultural nuances there. I think the best parallel I can draw is parents from less-developed nations sending their children overseas from an early age to secure eventual permanent residency and establish a life in a more developed nation. Sometimes, home just isn’t good enough. And this is one of Blue Lock’s main story themes: that Japan’s football, as it is, isn’t good enough. They have neither the organizational structure, infrastructure, nor support to get the World Cup that Sae, Anri and possibly Ego, covets.

Sae's dream, and talent, is in football. He's been scouted by perhaps the most successful team in the Blue Lock world, with a world-class program for youths, and has been given the best chance possible, for any kid in his shoes, to fulfill his dream to be the best striker in the world. He's being sponsored, and he also left with a manager who would presumably, help take care of him whilst he was there. Sae isn't going there like say, Ashito from Aoi Ashi, who needed to go through a trial to even be considered for acceptance into the youth squad. He's going there as the equivalent of a golden scholarship student scouted for a potential future work placement, with the likely backing of the JFA.

What alternatives could his parents offer him if he stayed in Japan? His own speech to Sendou pre-blue lock vs U20 match encapsulates what could have been for him (Sendou is very much a foil to Sae, especially now that we know they're both redheads lmao). Being the best in Japan, a middle-of-the-road striker in the world, retiring with an average, albeit decent life. Sae's too egoistic, too talented, too greedy to be content with a life like that. I wouldn't be surprised if Sae had also begged his parents hard to let him go, since it's pretty much all he wanted as a kid.

That's without even taking into account the other problems his parents would face if they immigrated with Sae. How to take care of Rin and his education there, for starters. Rent and housing, finding jobs in Madrid where they likely can't speak the language, and face discrimination.

I think we don't get their parents faces because Rin and Sae's story, and their relationship with their parents, are simply emotionally distant. I don't think they have much parental control over Rin or Sae either.  Sae's been more or less looking after himself/being taken care of by Real Madrid + his manager in Spain since 13, and Rin has been strongly implied to be in much the same shoes since Sae left, to a lesser extent. I doubt they know the more minute details about Rin and Sae’s school life and team experience, both within and out of Japan. I even doubt that they know that Rin and Sae had a fight, honestly, though I can also see them being the kind of parents who will let their kids sort things out between themselves.

Overall: Itoshi parents takes care of them physically (buys them material things, makes sure they have a home to stay in, have a physical caretaker in their place), but emotionally? Rin and Sae seem to be pretty much left on their own. No wonder their relationship with each other broke down, and what little relationships they have with others seem like such a convoluted mess.

5 things that make me happy.... Hmm. It's kind of hard to answer this at the moment because I'm quite depressed lately, but there are definitely some things that make my days much more bearable and enjoyable.

5. Studying Japanese

I've been studying Japanese for the past 4 years, and managed to pass N3 December 2022. I started just because I found it fun and to challenge the mindset that you can't learn difficult languages as an adult, and have kept up with it since! I genuinely enjoy learning it, teasing out the small subtleties of the language, and using it to communicate with others!

Recently, I've been watching JBL without subtitles to get used to it, with some mixed results haha, but I can definitely follow along much better! I watched the Utsukushii Kare movie at Bucheon International Film Festival last year with only korean subtitles (I don't speak any Korean) and managed to understand the plot okay!

4. Discovering new queer media

I think we've been blessed with new and more mainstream forms of queer media the past few years, especially the past 5-10 years. Teenage me who only really had Junjou Romantica and Queer Eye could NOT have imagined something like Young Royals or Skam, European queer dramas, becoming so mainstream. I can't believe we got the Given and Cherry Magic animes! I still can't quite comprehend that we have such incredible openly queer musicians. Some of my favorites at the moment are Rina Sawayama, Orville Peck, Lil Nas X, Samantha Hudson (please check out this Spanish artist!!), among others. And, of course, Southeast Asian Boys Love has taken the world by storm, to my utter joy! I'm so happy that we've seen the genre evolve so much, with many more voices joining behind and in front of the cameras.

3. Eating good food

I'm a huge food lover, and I love both making and eating new dishes. When I went to Korea last summer, I was having the time of my life just discovering delicious, cheap meals that I'd never tried before. Now that I'm at university at [school] with so many international students, we often have lovely pot lucks and all share food together. I'm happy that I'm at a point of my eating disorder recovery journey where I still struggle, but I get to enjoy food more.

2. Helping people

Last year, I finally worked for the first time as a psychologist. It was only an internship, but I got to directly aid others who were struggling, and it was an incredible experience. It's just so world-changing to see and hear people, and give them all you can. I was also part of my student union at undergrad, and loved seeing my impact on students who might have otherwise struggled. I think realizing how much I love making a contribution to others has made me more aware of what I want to work in once I graduate my master's.

My loved ones

Especially my girlfriend, closest friends (hey there @oatmealcoloured) and family. I truly would not be here without them, period. They're the only things that keep me going sometimes. Thank you.

I would love to take you to the gym with me, it honestly helped me with my depression as well! And of course i'd watch over you sweetheart<3 i wont lie, i love to go after dark bc theres less people. And i had the same problem but now i catch myself and try to stand straighter. I mostly lift weights when i work out so I know my posture improved due to needing to have a straight back to lift. Plus its super fun imo!! I miss the gym so bad but i hate going alone. I also miss feeling sore, im a bit of a masochist so i love feeling sore the day after working out🤭

Kenny (starting with my favorite who i project the most onto i think): 5'9, pansexual (and romantic), genderfluid girlboything princessgender princessboy genderfuck genderpunk ADHDgender hypererotigender wingedgender transfemme who steals money from their parents to buy estrogen off of like- amazon in bulk and probably sells some to other transfemmes with shitty parents who wont let them transition. for pronouns, is definitely fine with any and all, literally impossible to misgender this creature, but prefers he/she/they/it/xe/ze/angel pronouns. probably started growing his hair out at like 15 and gave up on trying to keep it short and managable, steals makeup from the dollar store for both herself and it's sister, definitely goes punk at some point (all of his pants are crust pants cause they dont get washed /j), and has a shit tonne of patched clothing both for necessity (he still owns his parka even though hes too big for it, probably cut up the sides and sized it up with a bunch of old clothes that dont get used anymore in the family, definitely has stick and poke tattoos (he probably gave a cute lil bow or heart stick and poke tattoo to Karen and angelself a matching one so theyd always have a reminder of each other no matter what) and definitely is the resident bootleg piercer for those who wanted them when they were younger but their parents didnt let them (Craig, stan, probably kyle, definitely tweek) or those who just straight up dont have the money to get professionally pierced. full of many disorders, specifically: autism, ADHD, bipolar, c-ptsd, BPD, combined generalised and focal photosensitive epilepsy, and probably some level of psychosis from all the trauma and drugs

He is that love interest that would burn down the world just for one last kiss goodbye with their lover, and he will kill anyone who touches her (in fact, he cuts of a guys hand because he insulted her)

Princess Sapphire, the feisty redheaded dumbass princess in my Sleeping Beauty retelling. She's demisexual, ADHD (mostly unmasked), and has no self preservation whatsoever. her fighting style is "pick up the nearest object and throw it or football tackle 'em". She's definitely a hothead too, very short tempered.

In my chaotic teenagers with superpowers The City is Ours series, my faves are:

Nickelle, the aroace team leader with ice powers, and the main pov. She Japanese American, the lead singer in a local rock band, and gets a villain arc, and then a redemption arc as well. She's got a very punk style and is a bit of a hothead when it comes to superhero-ing. She's a big sister to a lot of her team, and is very protective of them- she also feels soley responsible for them and her team, which is the main thing that drives her entire arc

Kylee, the youngest teammate and basically the whole team's mischevious little sibling with super speed and invisibility powers. She's a redheaded artist, PanAce, and is autistic and nonspeaking. She uses sign language or a text-to-speech app to communicate, and is a sassy lil shit who will start prank wars with Chase. she is the sunshine character that gets her moment to snap and go feral, and if you touch her the whole team will raise hell for you.

Chase, the very sarcastic techie and hacker of the team, who always has caffeine on him and is usually a night owl. though he has no powers, he is easily the most valuable asset to the team. He's Romani and Jewish, pansexual and aromantic, and has OCD, axiety, depression, (and i haven't officially decided if I should or not yet) possibly bipolar disorder

Corie, the aroace bounty hunter with blue hair. Due to past jobs that went bad, she's an amputee. Her right eye and arm (from the elbow down) is gone, and her left leg (from the knee down) is gone. she made all of her prothstetics herself, her eye now has it's own interface with an aiming system, and her arm has a laser gun attachment.

Pandora, the she/he scientist that used to work for a sketchy government agency, and continues to sell his work to the highest bidder, not caring much about morals. she also uses a wheelchair (that has cool sci-fi upgrades, including hovering capabilites), is pansexual, and is autistic, adhd and tourettic. He also wears a hood all the time bc he likes it.

Ive got a rounded nose, kinda thick eyebrows, a few freckles but a lot of beauty marks. Im kinda pale since i dont spend as much as i should in the sun, but i got some warmer undertones i guess? Im a pretty big person, big hands, big arms, big thighs, I'm not skinny. I slouch at times so i dont seem as tall as i am, but if im confident enough to be myself around you and then im standing upright. My friends and I didnt actually realize how tall i was until i started going to the gym again (before i stopped again around thanksgiving) and my posture improved. I just responded to an ask and listed like 10 of my favorite poems, but more generally:

- Badger Clark: queer cowboy poet; his work is really rhythmic/lyrical and tends to be about General cowboy/Western things

- Wilfred Owen: gay WWI soldier who trained as a pastor; his love poetry is gorgeous and his war poetry is haunting

- Langston Hughes: queer Black writer; lots of poems about race and Harlem (the Black neighborhood of NYC)

- Phillis Wheatley: Black enslaved person; Wheatley was the first woman published in America and her stuff tends to basically say ‘hey look I’m just as smart as a white person maybe we should have equality’

Contemporary fiction:

- I’m loving Sarah Gailey’s work right now, they’ve got two fun gay vaguely Wild West ensemble pieces (Upright Women Wanted and River of Teeth) and a fun magical California noir one (Magic for Liars)

- Tamora Pierce is an author I grew up on and am getting back into; she’s got tons of series about lady knights and lady spies and girls in fantasy in general

- the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo is a super fun, gay, incredibly diverse heist series (good old fashioned doing crime for money)

- Nottingham by Anna Burke is a lesbian retelling of the Robin Hood myth

- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon is about an autistic boy who wants to be an astronaut and needs to find out who killed his neighbor’s dog (it’s also about family, and how much love we can give each other, and how to find new ways to love each other when old or ‘normal’ ones don’t work for us)

Classics

- I’m a slut for The Hobbit not gonna lie; it’s rambly and sometimes slow but it feels cozy somehow

- Les Mis is a dense motherfucker but it was also a pretty fundamental book in getting me into social justice

- Jane Austen in general is fantastic; I’m a huge fan of Northanger Abbey in particular because it just makes fun of trashy Gothic lit

- on the topic of Gothic lit, Dracula is really worth the read. You can’t get the full story or the right vibes from any other medium.

- Frankenstein is also worth the read. Shelley knew what was up.

- Their Eyes Were Watching God by Hurston is in dialect, which can take a bit to get used to, but it’s SUCH A GOOD BOOK

- A Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is so painfully gay it was used as evidence in his sodomy trial. If you can, get your hands on the uncensored version for maximum gay.

Nonfic

- Portrait of a Marriage by Nigel Nicholson is about his parents’ polyamorous relationship(s), including his mom’s relationship with Virginia Woolf

- 100 Essays I Don’t Have Time To Write by Sarah Ruhl is a fun collection of 100 short essays about theater, patenting, and life

- This Republic of Suffering by Drew Gilpan Faust is a bit slow, but it’s a look at the way the American Civil War changed our ideas about death and it made me want to study history

Plays (these got away from me a bit, sorry)

- No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre is about three awful people trapped in a room together. Maybe not the play to read in quarantine but a damn good play.

- Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, adapted by Sarah Ruhl. A play version of the book Woolf wrote about how much she loved her girlfriend, it uses lots of Woolf’s original language and is so fucking gay and beautiful

- Hamlet by Shakespeare. What can I say; I love this funky lil depressed gay and his cute nerd boyfriend. Macbeth and The Tempest are also great.

- A Sunday Morning in the South by Georgia Douglas Johnson needs a trigger warning for racial violence, but it’s one of the most chilling things I’ve ever read in my life. It’s about a a Black family in the Deep South in the early 1900s, it’s pretty short and it’s so horrifyingly good.

- Trifles by Susan Glaspell is about a murder investigation, and more deeply about women protecting each other.

- Tea by Velina Hasu Houston is about four Japanese women in a small town in Kansas in the 1960s and how they find common ground and community.

- Language of Angels by Naomi Izuka is a vaguely supernatural one about a girl who dies in rural Appalachia and the way she haunts the classmates involved.

- Slaughter City by Naomi Wallace is about worker’s rights both historically and in the modern meat packing industry; it’s also got some really cool supernatural elements

- In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play by Sarah Ruhl is about the invention of the vibrator, and more generally about intimacy and sexuality/sexual pleasure.

- M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang is a subversion of the white savior trope and a commentary on the effeminization of Asian men, based on a true spy story.
