Noahvember Day 25
Don't forget to vote in the poll at the end of this post.
Noah loves his city. In fact, he loves it so much that I'm going to have trouble fitting everything into this post. But let's get started.
Just hangin' out on the sidewalk, as you do. Or as Noah does.
When your city loves you back:
Look up...way up. (This is a Canadian joke, Noah would get it).
Watch out for the Canadian paparazzi.

Noah talks about his time at the Etobicoke School for the Arts:

An article from 2010 with Noah talking about his favourite places. (No preview for some reason).
And this article seems to fit with the theme as well:
I'm going to self-rec my Toronto-based romcom fic:

“Moustache Steve” resurfaced and went all crazy (shocking?) on my DMs on tiktok the last day or two. The original story is a couple of years back but here’s a summary:
A guy from my past resurfaced and I wanted to warn women on dating apps about him. His name is Steve and we met on Hinge. He seemed okay from chatting / talking on there so I invited him to a comedy show (this was in 2021) and we had a nice time. Ended the night having a drink after the show and he immediately said he wanted to see me again and asked if I would hang out on the weekend. I was super surprised by this, he must have had a good time and liked me. Most of my recent first dates didn’t amount to much from meeting people off dating apps so this was refreshing. We decided to meet at High Park and walk around / hang out for the afternoon. Red Flag #1 he was irritated that I kept on commenting on all the cute dogs - mind you I asked if I could bring my dog and he said he likes dogs! He said “no don’t bring the dog so we can focus on getting to know each other, less distractions” so I was like, weird but okay. When we met he tells me he purposely brought me to the park as a “free date” because “women always fuck me over and make me pay for dinner or meals and then ghost me” (red flag #2)… we hang out a few hours and I am getting hungry. He tells me he has “food at home” and has plans later to go out with some friends to a comedy show and will catch me later. No biggie, I go home and think nothing of it. Over the next few days he starts texting and calling me at all hours of the day while I’m working and starts to have little meltdowns when I don’t answer or I’m busy. I tell him I’m working and wonder how he’s texting so much while he’s working? He told me he works full time but not to ask about it, another trigger or something? (Red flag #3) the texts and calls turn into voice notes. Really scary and aggressive sounding and I’m at the point past being polite and I suggest he seeks some mental health help from a professional and block / delete his number (and already unmatched on Hinge). Really creepy and scary and unstable stuff. Fast forward to earlier this week when I started to look at tiktok reels after quite some time of not using the app. He’s a suggested contact and apparently is following me on there? We never exchanged socials so I clicked on his profile where he has one weird video posted and nothing else. He DMs me “hey” and I decide to reply saying “hi” because why not. Maybe he’s going to apologize for being a nutcase? Maybe not. He proceeds to tell me he “figured we could go for a drink” and I replied “no thank you” politely again. The amount of replies (13+) I got after a polite no thank you signals to me that he’s not okay. Not stable. Shouldn’t be meeting new women if he’s still on Hinge or other apps and I thought I would warn all of you lovely ladies about him. Steer clear! He lives in Etobicoke, is about 32 years old and his name is Steve.

Kate Kelton: PHOENIX
JANUARY 2023
Seeking to elevate brave Silence Breakers who’ve come forward during the #MeToo movement, Kate Kelton’s portraiture combines their oft familiar faces with elements of her family’s Czech architecture. Her portraits are cloaked in the garb of statues that Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the central train station that her great- grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague between 1901 – 1909. Sampling and mixing her own lineage, Kate has transformed a historical body of work, itself a thing of lasting beauty, exchanging granite for graphite; plaster for paint.
Headdresses and crowns deify Kate Kelton’s subjects. She uplifts the Unsung Sheroes & Heroes, Patriarchy Smashers, Warrior Survivors, Silence Breakers, Philosophers, Truth-Tellers, Whistle Blowers and Thought Giants. She paints portraits cloaked in the garb of statues Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the train station that her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague in 1901 – 1909.
Apotheosis through a reclaimed, reapplied Art Nouveau.
Kate’s recent work is a matter of expansion through contrast – she is as ephemeral as her subjects are concrete architecture; she is structural when her subjects should slip through your fingers like too-fine sand. Taken as a whole, the works in her magnificent series Phoenix are incredibly intelligent, but when looked at individually, you come to understand that these are statements of life beyond themselves. The series take embellishments of a Prague train station designed by her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, and combines these with portraits of men and women who have stood against the sexual harassment and assault rampant in Hollywood –particularly those who have testified against Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, and Bill Cosby, and made allegations against Franco Zeffirelli, Donald Trump, Russell Simmons, Max Landis, Michael Jackson, Nick Carter, Luc Besson, and others. These women, like Kate herself, have suffered in the era where powerful men, every bit as immovable as the train station, wielded their power without check. The portraits emblazoned on architectural elements, they are marked against the edifice, every bit as permanent, and perhaps even more defining. If you approach those as portraits, you’re taking the moment but missing the permanence. If you take them as statuary, you’re missing the fact that they are, in fact, alive within those gazes. It’s really incredible how much a shift of the light, a dart of the eye, can turn each of them from a memorial into a promise. This is not an exhibition about tragedy. This is a monument to courage, survival and empowerment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kate Kelton was born in the south of Germany, after her parents escaped Czechoslovakia. Her early years were spent in a VW bus traveling Europe with her mother, an abstract painter. Settling in Toronto, Canada at age seven, Kelton attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts as a Visual Arts Major, and received a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film, from Ryerson University. Her father was an architect. His grandfather, and namesake, was Josef Fanta: renowned Art Nouveau architect, engineer and sculptor, who worked closely with Alphonse Mucha. Photographer Dagmar Hochová is Kelton’s great aunt, on her mother’s side. Kelton also had a recurring role on Stephen King’s Haven on the Syfy Channel. When the illustrated re- edition of the book it’s based on, The Colorado Kid, was published, she illustrated the front and back inside covers. Her first lead role on tv was opposite Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard, in the Independent Film Channel’s Bullet In The Face. Alex Maleev illustrated her for the poster. Her first feature film, Deepa Mehta’s The Republic of Love, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her film credits include cult classics, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and American Psycho II. Did you also spot her in music videos, like Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me?” Almost as good as googling her as “the Tic Tac girl.” ;} Kate has exhibited her artwork internationally for decades, at, among others: the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery in the UK; Gallery 1988 in New York, Venice, and West Hollywood; Gabba Gallery, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and Durden & Ray in Los Angeles; Art On Scene in Beverly Hills; Galerie F in Chicago; Lawless Concept in Montreal; and The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Her work has toured with Yoko Ono’s Group Show Arising from Zurich, to Portugal, to the UK and Germany.

December Dalliances 2022
Above Photo: Christmas Eve view, December 2022
You can find my favourite tweets of the month over here and here. (I also made a list of my very favourite Christmas tweets.)
I recapped my autumn list of things to do and made a new seasonal list of things I’d like to do this winter.
I compiled my favourite photos of 2022.
I finally wrote about my trip to Las Vegas from back in September.
I read and reviewed Dave Grohl’s memoir.
I went to the newly opened (and fantastic) Museum of Broadway, and I’ll write a bigger post about it this week.
I got a seasonal latte at Elevenses Cafe in Astoria and it was very cute, I’d go again.
I have fallen in love with The Body Shop’s new scent Wild Pine. I’m fearful that it may be a seasonal scent, so I’ve already stocked up.
I ate at Soothr and it was so, so good. Love a new thai place.
Above Photo: Paul at Soothr, NYC
Some things I watched this month:
The Santa Clauses (the new Tim Allen show): Ugh, it was terrible. Maybe I’m not the audience it’s supposed to be for, but still - just a stinkfest.
Jack Frost: I love Michael Keaton, but I just couldn’t get past the first half hour. It’s way too sad.
The Crown (seasons 3-5): Loved the season three Wales episode. The moon landing one was also perfect. It’s a great show, but extremely depressing if you’re binging it over a short period of time.
Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?: God, I hated it. Netflix has this annoying habit of making documentary series out of things that could easily be 40 minutes long and it is obnoxious as hell. You do not need to watch this. Read the Wikipedia page about it instead, you’ll save yourself so much wasted time.
I was looking up trivia for the movie Scrooged and learned that the childhood house in the movie is a real place in Queens! So obviously I walked over to see it in person. Insanity that it hasn’t changed after all of this time.
Above Photo: Frank Cross’ childhood home from Scrooged (1988) in Queens, New York
I won a lottery ticket to see A Christmas Carol on Broadway and… YIKES. I can’t describe how bad it was. First of all, IT WAS A ONE MAN SHOW. And I didn’t know that beforehand, so yes that’s my fault. But oh my god, it was agony.
Above Photo: A Christmas Carol on Broadway in New York, December 2022
Are we all aware of how garbage the brand Silani is? I tried it for the first time and lord was it bad. Never again. Spend the extra dollar and eat something edible.
I watched the final World Cup game with my parents and I’m glad France lost, give others a chance to win too, ya know?
Above Photo: World Cup final with my parents, December 2022
I will never be above latte art.
Above Photo: Latte art from San Remo’s in Etobicoke, Ontario
I went to Bell, Book & Candle for some Christmas themed drinks and it was great. Love a divey, but good bar.
Above Photo: With Irene at Bell, Book & Candle, NYC
Is it even Christmas if I don’t make Nutella stuffed chocolate chip cookies? I also made a few batches of Alison Roman’s amazing chocolate chunk shortbread cookies that were a big hit.
Above Photo: The Nutella stuffed chocolate chip cookies from Ambitious Kitchen
Obviously I went to my parent’s house for Christmas and it was exactly what I wanted & needed.

Went ice skating for the first time in twenty years and it was great. Think I’m gonna buy some skates and make this a yearly thing.

Jackbox and Nintendo Switch games remain the perfect family activity around the holidays.
Above Photo: The game Use Your Words on Nintendo Switch

My mom and I saw a wild fox in her backyard and it. was. incredible. It was just playing in the snow and I can’t believe we got to see him/her.
Winter skies might be the best skies.
Above Photo: December 2022
Above Photo: If only I could bottle this kind of blue and keep it in my pocket
I made the Christmas tree spinach and artichoke dip and it was a hit. It did not look pretty, but the flavours were great.
I also made a leftover turkey sandwich with STUFFING WAFFLES and it was so, so good. Again it photographed rough, but tasted incredible. I used this recipe to make the waffles. Definitely have to do this again.
The main reason to go to the Union Square Holiday Market? Duck confit poutine at Duck Season. It’s honestly a better poutine than some Canadian places.
Above Photo: Duck confit poutine at Duck Season in NYC
I fell absolutely in love with the newest Bob’s Burgers Christmas episode, The Plight Before Christmas.
Crate & Barrel continues to have the cutest fabric Christmas ornaments.
Above Photo: Harry Potter-looking cat ornament at Crate & Barrel

Trader Joe’s had Christmas wreaths this year, so I got one and it was perfect. It makes me feel so together to have a wreath on my door. I still have it up. I don’t want to say goodbye.
Above Photo: Christmas wreath from Trader Joe’s
I went to see Noah Baumbach talk about his new movie White Noise at a NYPL event and it was very all right. I wish he’d talked more about older movies of his that I’ve loved, but I guess it makes sense that he didn’t since he was promoting this one.
Above Photo: Noah Baumbach speaking at an NYPL event promoting White Noise, December 2022
The candy cane cold brew from Blank Street? Unparalleled.
One of my favourite things to do in December in New York is to walk around the city looking at the holiday lights and listen to that Darlene Love song on repeat.

I went to Essex Market to see their Gingerbread Village display, which was cute but I wish it was bigger. And since I was there, I took a look at the sandwich menu at Shopsin’s and holy christ I need to go back.
Above Photo: Gingerbread Village at Essex Market in NYC, December 2022
Nothing better than a Boxing Day puzzle.
Above Photo: Boxing Day, December 2022
Some things that I’m looking forward to this month: I’m going to get real dressed up and go see Moulin Rouge on Broadway with my friend Diana, I’m excited about seeing the Restaurant Week menus for this season, I’m going to start using this first-of-the-month checklist again, Classpass is doing a free monthly promotion right now so I’ll keep doing that until it starts charging again, and I really can’t wait to make this lasagna soup.

BAKING/COOKING
I made this garlic butter chicken orzo that was really good and would be even easier to make with a rotisserie chicken.
CRAVING
The mushroom risotto at Alioli in Mississauga is one of my favourite things to eat when I visit my parents.
EATING
The homemade hot sauce at Coppelia in Chelsea might be the best one I’ve ever tasted at a restaurant before.
EXPERIENCING
Forced the kids to play Mystery Date with me and that game really stands the test of time.

LOVING
San Remo’s had this giant Nutella selection of baked goods for World Nutella Day and their fritter was wild.

SHOPPING
Finally bought the tea tree shampoo and conditioner from The Body Shop (because I am single-handedly keeping that store in business). I’m excited to see if it’s worth the hype (the hype that I’ve created in my mind, not one person on this earth is hyped about tea tree shampoo anymore, I realize).
WATCHING
I saw some old episodes of Curb since the new season is back this week and I’d completely forgotten how much I hate the newer seasons. Just absolute trash.
WEARING
I’m in such a clothing rut. I just spent three weeks visiting my parents and when I’m there I wear the same three things over and over, so maybe I’m recovering from that? I need to shake things up.
