Lonac, “Nitpicking” – Rijeka, Croatia

Croatian artist Lonac created this photorealistic mural of a man (his father) focused on the model of a ship for the MMSU Rijeka Spajalica public art project. He used around 100 cans of spray paint with some 50 different color tones and worked seven days to create this piece.

Hosier Lane – Melbourne, Australia

Perhaps one of the most famous street art locations in the world, Hosier Lane in Melbourne is essentially an open canvas, meaning that any artist can go and add to the murals. The result is an impressive mishmash of different styles. You can get lost in this eclectic lane and revisit many times, having a completely different experience each time.

Incheon’s mural, painted over silos, is the largest outdoor mural in the world, according to Guinness World Records. The mural resembles a set of 16 books and shows the story of a boy growing into an adult.

Artist unknown, “I love you so much” – Austin, USA

Perhaps not an impressive street mural per se, this phrase, graffitied on the side of Jo’s Coffee on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, has become one of the most famous pieces of street art in the world and an attraction in its own right. Apparently, the owners of the coffee shop, who are a couple, got into a fight and one of them painted this love declaration on the side of the building.

Petit Champlain Murals – Old Quebec, Canada

Old Quebec is known for its beauty, and the Petit Champlain trompe l’œil murals are no exception. The area between this neighbourhood and Parliament Hill is home to remarkable works of art, including Fresque du Petit-Champlain.

Muralis – Sherbrooke, Canada

The thing that makes Sherbrooke’s murals special is that Easter eggs are hidden in all of the paintings. Visitors to this city in Quebec are invited to try and find them thanks to an app—which also makes the murals come alive!

Guido van Helten, “No Exit” – Reykjavik, Iceland

These beautiful black-and-white murals are based on Andrés Kolbeinsson’s photographs of a local production of the Jean-Paul Sartre play “No Exit” in the 1960s. They are located on the Loftkastalinn building, a former theatre space in Reykjavik, Iceland and were pained in the winter of 2013-14.

Dmitri Vrubel, “My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love” – Berlin, Germany

This political mural depicts a 1979 photograph where Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Soviet Union, and Erich Honecker, the General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of the German Democratic Republic, share a socialist fraternal kiss.

It is located on the eastern side of the Berlin Wall and has become an emblem of the city.

Patrick Commecy, multiple murals – France

Patrick Commecy and his team, under the name A.Fresco, have painted over 300 trompe l’œil murals to beautify existing buildings. Each piece is custom to the building it is located on to make sure that it fits the décor and story of the place. This one is “Levallois en fleurs.”

Millo, “Everyone Is Searching for It” – Milan, Italy

Painted in 2015 and depicting a man searching for love in the big city using a fortune stick and a woman hopefully catapulting her heart, Millo’s Everyone Is Searching for It is a great example of the artist’s signature style.

Louis Gan, “Brother and sister having fun on the swing” – George Town, Malaysia

George Town is known for its street art (amongst many other things, of course) and this mural, Brother and sister having fun on the swing, is probably one of the city’s most photographed, because passersby can include themselves in the art!

Banksy, “Girl with Balloon” – London, UK

Arguably one of the most famous murals in recent years, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon was first painted on Waterloo Bridge in 2002, and other similar murals were also painted around London, although none remain today. In fact, in 2018, a framed copy of the painting spontaneously shredded while it was being auctioned, thanks to a mechanical device that the artist had hidden in the frame.

ChemiS, “House of Cards” – San Nicolas, Aruba

Painted as part of the Aruba Art Fair, ChemiS’s House of Cards takes up the whole façade of the Winter Garden bar restaurant and nightclub. Its trompe l’œil effect is really impressive!

Comic Book Route – Brussels, Belgium

In 1991, the City of Brussels authorities and the Belgian Comic Strip Center undertook the project of creating a comic strip route in the city of Brussels, covering up plain walls. The project has since grown to over 50 murals.

Belfast Murals – Belfast, Ireland

Northern Ireland has a complicated and tumultuous political and religious history and the Belfast Murals depict this, highlighting important moments and people of the last 40 years. One of the best ways to visit is with a black cab tour, to admire the works of art and learn about the local history.

El Mac & Gene Pendon, “Leonard Cohen” – Montreal, CA

Montreal is a city renowned for its street art and holds the annual Mural street art festival. In recent years, two gigantic murals honouring the late Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen have sprung up on building façades. The most impressive one is located on Crescent Street and can be admired from the city’s Kondiaronk belvedere.

Keith Haring, “We the Youth” – Philadelphia, USA

Created in 1987 in collaboration with the CityKids Foundation and restored in 2013, We the Youth is the only Keith Haring mural that remains intact in its original site. The mural was painted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution and is a play on the phrase “We the people.”

The mural is located at 22nd and Ellsworth Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Felis Dia Di Dera Gai!

Dera Gai is an Aruban cultural festival which has been celebrated for about 100 years with traditional song and dance. (It was a festival brought to us from different cultures and countries centuries ago).

Aruba celebrates San Juan in a unique way. San Juan festivities in the early times had to do more with superstition, mainly because the natives believed in spirits and several Gods, and they were very afraid of them. In order to be in the good grace of the Gods and spirits, they had to make several offerings. One of these was for the harvest. The purpose of the festival of harvest was to thank the many Gods for the good harvest year and to request them to bless the harvests for the following year. Aruba’s harvest festival is now a cultural celebration featuring traditional song and dance. The symbol of the rooster and bright red and yellow costumes are central to events held at various locations, including community centres.

It is said that in early days cunukeronan (coo-noo-ker-o-nan, Aruban farmers), after harvesting, stored the trunks of the several plants like corn and other types of wood so that they could be burned on San Juan (Saint John's Day). The farmers would then burn the woods on the night before San Juan as well as throughout the day. Fire means purification and it scares away bad luck resulting in a better harvest the following year.

During the festivities, there were several games like jumping over fire, typical dances, singing, stories and jokes being told, all this done around the fire. This festivity was something big in Aruba - it was a holiday. In the past, on June 23rd workers were given the afternoon off and the June 24 the whole day. The festivities start when the night arrives on San Juan's Eve.

The tradition to bury a living rooster (dera = bury and gai = rooster) was very common in those days. Dera Gai, which translates to "burying of the rooster" in the local language, is a cultural activity which has been celebrated with traditional song and dance for the past century or so. This holiday is rife with both pagan and Christian symbolism reflecting the influences of the Arawak natives and Spanish missionaries on the island.

Traditionally, the Dera Gai celebration centred around an unusual ritual. A hole was dug in the ground and a live rooster buried in the hole up to its neck. Blindfolded revellers would then be given three tries to decapitate the rooster with a long pole (piñata-style). (The Catholics considered this ritual to be symbolic of the decapitation of St. John the Baptist while the pagans believed that the spilling of the blood would fertilise the earth for the next growing season.) The one to successfully execute the deed was rewarded with bottles of alcoholic drinks and other prizes. Every town had its own festivity. The most important dance was where a rooster was buried leaving only its head above the ground.

Today, a more humane approach is taken. For example, at the Dera Gai celebration in Santa Cruz, one of the biggest Dera Gai celebrations on the island, revellers are blindfolded and tasked with locating a flag staked in the ground while swaying their hips to the rhythms of a band. Every now and then, the coordinator of the game fools the blindfolded participants by moving the flag while the game is in progress. Folk dance groups also reenact the burying and decapitation of the rooster using a plastic rooster. Decked out in bright red and yellow costumes, with the yellow said to represent the bloom of the local kibrahacha tree in June, these groups also perform harvest dance rituals.

After the incorporation of San Juan, they expanded the tradition, where now men named Juan have preference over the others. The man is spun around so that he gets disoriented and no longer knows the exact location of the rooster. Then he is given three chances to hit the rooster’s head with a corn stick. An experienced dancer is guided by the wind and uses his foot to feel the ground in search of the rooster.

During these festivities, women are dressed with long yellow dresses and yellow hair holders dancing in a choreographed manner, however multicoloured dresses have also come into tradition, mostly with colours ranging around Yellow, Red, and sometimes even Black. The musicians are dressed in yellow or red with a colorful band tightened on their hips. The instruments used consist mostly of drums and other noisemaker devices. While the music plays, the dancer has to hit the rooster, but the stick is not to touch the ground, or he loses his turn. This is done to symbolize the three times the rooster sang when Saint Peter lied about not knowing Jesus, according to the bible.

Many years ago, bonfires were built on the eve of St. John's Day in order to communicate the arrival of the holiday. The old chaff from the previous year's harvest would be burnt in preparation for the coming growing season. Nowadays, fires are burnt all over the island on St. John's Day itself, serving as an olfactory reminder of this unique local festival.

Up to this day, Dera Gai is still celebrated in every town.

Man, I remember as a little kid celebrating this holiday, my favourite part was always looking for the plastic rooster with a stick (cuz I were blindfolded, it's like a piñata, but no candy comes out) and beating it with the stick (or just flinging the stick around to see what else I could hit).

And boi do I remember the smoke inhalation on this day.

It was sometimes worse then New Year's, and big bonfires could be seen all around the island (granted I could never go due to the fact that the smoke could literally kill me).

And the dancing and the food! It was all so great!

Nowadays it's honestly barely celebrated, and like our language, it's being pushed aside from our culture to make room for other things, like Burger King's or Halloween, and don't get me wrong, I love Halloween, but the big corporations and government here would rather appeal to what people outside the island love rather then the local and native holiday's.

your after 10 years headcannons are great. where do you think the season 1 islanders will be in 10 years?

I’m honestly flattered that someone read the whole thing- I talked wayyy too much and tumblr won’t let me save my edited version where I broke up the wall of texts a bit. But omg I just love this prompt so muchhh. 

For what it’s worth, I think more of the S1 cast go on to be famous than the S2 cast. Chalk that up to most of them already being in fame-related careers and the first season being more of a breakout phenomenon in universe than the second. It’s harder for me to conceptualize the LIs without MC (probably because they’re all a bit more of blank slates than the S2 characters). 

Talia

She just has to get married to my MC Clara. I just… They’re soulmates. I can’t not think about them together. Talia and Clara would date for three years, Talia would propose at that point, and then Clara would spend two more years planning their wedding. Talia just wants to get married soon, but Clara needs the ceremony to be perfect. And it is- they get married in a beautiful floating gazebo in Thailand, everything’s perfectly decorated and executed, and they honeymoon in Aruba or the Canary Islands. The dresses- I’m picturing Talia in a dress and Clara in a white lace suit- are impeccable, it’s just the sapphic wedding to end all sapphic weddings. The have live music through the whole thing and the guest gifts are beautiful and it runs so smoothly. 

Before all of that though, I think a lot of younger musicians take an interest in Talia from the show, because she’s so awesome. Maybe one or two [INSERT MUSICIAN HERE IDK I ONLY LISTEN TO GARBAGE] invite her to tag along on a tour, and her articles cause her to be picked up as a legitimate music journalist for a bigger publication. So she starts doing a lot of festival critiques and op eds, travelling a lot with Clara by her side. For her part, Clara doesn’t really work much, and sporadically drops exhibitions that are moderately acclaimed. So they come to the ten year reunion very similar to how they left it- travelling the world together and still madly in love with each other. 

Mason

With or without MC, he keeps doing the modeling thing. I don’t think his music ever super takes off, but he certainly hits some bigger brands for magazine issues. This is probably way off base, but I think? He would really enjoy being a stay at home dad if the opportunity presented itself. Like he’ll work on music as a hobby, but he doesn’t really want to work. So I think within three years of the show ending, he has a kid with either MC or another woman he met. If it’s MC, you KNOW he’s proposing at the year’s reunion and making the proposal a big headline grabber. He’s not super plussed about the wedding execution, just wanted his role (the proposal and the suit) to be 10/10. 

But he would really, really take to being a dad. Especially if MC is doing the celebrity/successful career woman thing, I think it’d naturally progress to him staying home and raising the kids. He’s a really loving but also stern parent- I can see him having a lot of expectations for the kids appearance wise and athletically. He plays futbol with them for sure. So ten years later, MC would be thriving in her career and they’d have two or three really successful kiddos to brag about. 

Levi

I know I shouldn’t hate Levi because he’s such a good guy in Matchmaker, but I do. Ugh. I don’t wanna write one about him sksksks. I’m stuck between ‘he proposes to MC like… a month after the show’ and ‘he literally won’t propose for another 15 years’. So he and MC win and they /really/ struggle with long distance after the show. Levi’s very needy and has a hard time feeling like they’re still in love when they can’t see each other. Their relationship definitely is rocky after the villa as they struggle with that and learning how to be romantic if it’s not these huge romantic gestures. Levi struggles to communicate his feelings, and maybe they break up for a bit. 

If Levi’s not with MC, he sleeps around a ton after the show. He tries to avoid fans but inevitably some lie well enough to get through. Idk what the career progression for swimming looks like, so idk he plays professionally or goes to the olympics or whatever? I don’t see him finding a girl to date long term, and he’s definitely very lonely and frustrated if he’s still single 10 years later. 

Jake

My boy!!! My boy!! He stays really close friends with Talia and Clara, hosting them whenever they come back to England. He definitely doesn’t stay with Cherry- I think they amicably break up at the finale party- and he doesn’t date for awhile after the show. He’s still trying to get over his crush on MC, and then he gets too busy with work. He’s a fan favorite and doesn’t know what to do with all the attention, so he withdraws more than anything. Right after the show he gets an offer to open a restaurant, but the contract isn’t great and he doesn’t feel ready. Four years after the show he finally does open it though, and it’s successful because it’s good not because his name is attached. A year or so into operating, Rohan comes to the restaurant and they reconnect. They get really close, remembering their friendship, and then informally transition to dating. Neither of them are super present online, so while they’re not public about their relationship the intense fans recognize what’s up. Theories fly around and no one confirms or denies it. Besides, Jake’s really busy at work and Rohan lives in a different city. But they date long distance for like… 6 years before Rohan suggests they move in together. 

Tim

I know S3 said that Tim and Jen broke up but shut up no they didn’t. I want them to be like Victor and Nicole from Big Brother so bad. I pretend I do not see. It was a cute nod to readers and showed maturity on Tim’s part but I refuse to accept it. Tim really clings to his Love Island fame- he comes back in S2 to DJ for the ministry of sound party and comes back in S3 as well. All of his marketing for his DJing is ‘as seen on Love Island’ and ‘featured on national television!’, and he very much leans into that in public too, taking pictures and signing stuff while quoting the show. Once the notoriety wears off in like 7ish years, he kind of flounders. Both to make money and carve out a sense of purpose and career.

Jen is forced to do kind of the same thing. She’d hoped that going on the show would get her noticed by fashion editors or boost her blog at the very least. But come on- she dresses like that, she cannot have that interesting of a fashion editorial perspective. So neither of those things ever take off because her blog is pretty normie and she doesn’t have the personality to carry an audience along with her. She tries to lose the ‘Jen from Love Island’ tag, but after a few years of struggling leans into it. Their relationship is rocky at times- she struggles to acknowledge his perspective and Tim lets things go until they metastasize. But they go to couples counseling and adopt a couple of dogs. I think the 10 year reunion finds them newly pregnant or brand new parents, and I don’t see them having more than one kid.  

Erikah

My poor girl, she would get eviscerated after the show airs. Any way you slice it- if the canon S1 airs she’d get bullied for being ‘snakey��� and ‘a bitch’, and if the Matchmaker S1 aired she’d get lambasted for switching from Rohan and being annoying. Fans would bully her off social media and she’d deactivate. It would affect her ability to get work (I feel like even if she weren’t so hated it would anyways? Like if you’re seriously applying to acting positions would a reality tv show look good on your resume? I don’t think so but maybe?) and the first two years after the show would be a really dark place for her.

But she’d get her life back together, and I think a cornerstone of that would be either moving out of the UK entirely or finding a career that’s out of the public eye. I think she finds it really satisfying to do something technical like dental school or nursing, and she puts Love Island squarely in her past- doesn’t go to the reunions, doesn’t have public social media, doesn’t text anyone from the show (which lowkey upsets Clara because… you were my friend…). She doesn’t date until she gets out of her dark headspace, which will be in a couple of years. But when she does, she meets a really lovely guy on a dating service and they get engaged relatively quickly after meeting- I think Erikah’s impatient to find a house and have a semblance of normalcy. Plus if she moves she’s going to be missing her family quite a bit, so she’ll want to start her own. 

Allegra

She leans into the bitch persona she cultivated. Her job wasn’t really real to begin with, so she happily settles in to being a full-time reality tv celebrity. She goes on Love Island AllStars for SURE and I can see her doing some American/international shows as well. It’s not SUPER lucrative, she makes most of her money from online sponsorships and promoting things. 1. favorite memory from 2018

I can’t just pick one!! I’d probably have to choose Outfest, that was such a fun day.  Outfest is essentially a LGBTQIA+ coming out festival in October and it’s such a blast. I went with a new group of friends that I really enjoy and it was amazing ;-;

2. biggest achievement in 2018

Surviving. I’m kidding... sort of. This year was a such a rollercoaster filled with such highs and such... lows. The beginning of this year was not the best, but I think I finished it off a lot better.  I wouldn’t say that I had any major achievements this year, but I definitely grew a lot more than I have in previous years.

5. did you go on holiday in 2018? tell us about it!

I don’t think I did? Unless you count my grandma’s beach house. WAIT I DID. I went to Aruba, that was fun. My sister brought her (now) ex-bf and I was essentially third wheeling most of the time. I was fine with it for the most part because they’re not that big on PDA and plus he actually talked to me unlike her past bfs.  

8. favourite film you saw in 2018

I didn’t see a lot of films in theaters. I was mostly catching up on movies I’ve missed. I’m torn between Black Panther and The Greatest Showman. I’ll probably have to go with Black Panther because the message behind it was so strong and it was overall an incredible movie.

11. did you make any new friends this year? tell us about them!

iorbibroeabroaie, yo this is gonna be such a long answer 

Alright, we’re gonna go chronologically. I was in this discord server called the Amberprice Legion. Some of you have heard it and know the story, but those of you who don’t, it’s dead for a reason now. I won’t go into the nitty gritty, but I came out of that shit storm with a core group of friends who I’m still friends with to this day. At that time I didn’t really have a lot of irl friends except for two.

We met in our foundation drawing class with a professor that we worship now.  The one is a total sweetheart, she’s even more shy than I am but she’s so fun to hang out with. The other is also super duper sweet, she’s so excited about everything and cares so much about her friends. Her optimism is something that I envy, but alas I was never the most optimistic ever.

Over the summer, I was essentially put into the co manager position. My supervisor was like “yea, you’re the manager when the manager isn’t here”. So I had to become friends with my supervisor and co workers. Oml my co workers are goofballs, but they’re good kids.

The new school year!! My one drawing class friend has another friend who lives in my building and we’ve hung out whenever we’re free. We go out pokemon go hunting and out for food and everything. With that came a whole other friend group after I proposed that we start a dnd campaign. Everyone in that campaign is a joy to play with and I’d say that we’re a close knit group of friends. I mean, everyone else was already friends bUT STILL. 

I also just recently joined a new discord group! Everyone is so lovely there! I don’t mean to crush on the Legion, but everything is so much more organized there. From what I’ve seen people actually listen to the mods and admins whenever they’re told to do something or stop. If I could go through everyone I would but I don’t want to miss anyone ;-; Everyone there is so creative, sweet, and amazing. I love everyone there so far and I’m so glad I joined the server

12. most important lesson you learned in 2018

Life doesn’t care what I’m going through. Things are going to happen that I’m not going to enjoy and it’s up to me whether or not I’m going to sit and grovel or get up and keep going. Also, don’t overwork. 4-5 hours of sleep isn’t enough to produce good enough work to get where I need to be.

13. what was your most embarrassing moment this year?

Uhhh, not making the graphic design program. I wish it could have been as small as tripping on my face in front of my crush or accidentally knocking someone’s drink out of their hand but alas.

15. did you surprise yourself in 2018? if so, how?

I didn’t realize how unsuccessful I was going to be this year that’s for sure. 

20. what’s your new years resolution?

Be gay, do crime.  Kidding, I don’t believe in New Years resolutions because I know I won’t follow them and most of the people I know have them but don’t follow through with them.
