I think online payment processors are an underappreciated threat to free speech compared to eg Trump, political correctness, etc – they’ve also been harassing the nootropics community and making it really difficult to sell otherwise-legal chemicals. Bitcoin is apparently so rarely-used that a lot of businesses wouldn’t be profitable if they had to go Bitcoin only; anyone who can figure out a nonjudgmental way to send money online would have quite the business opportunity, not to mention the thanks of a grateful Internet.

The comments section get partway to the explanation, but the actual answer is that the government very actively intervenes against that possibility. Indeed, you can see this happening with Bitcoin right now.

But the more interesting historical note is that the current threat people are discussing comes from PayPal. But PayPal was originally founded specifically to solve this problem! The founders were by and large ideological libertarians who were founding the service in the same spirit as the offshore bank in Cryptonomicon.

The reason this didn't work out is that the government doesn't want it to work out, for basically the same reason ideological libertarians do want it to work out. David Sacks has a comment on that here:

PayPal had begun to be used by a substantial number of online gambling sites. Although this was perfectly legal at the time, a number of state attorneys general (including Eliot Spitzer) were looking to make a name for themselves by investigating whether PayPal was "aiding and abetting" online gambling.

In conjunction with the eBay acquisition, PayPal announced that it was prohibiting these transactions. This was inevitable even without the acquisition, but as a stand-alone company PayPal would have been an easier target for politically-minded prosecutions.

We already had some experience with this: the State of Louisiana had previously shut down PayPal for a week due to the arbitrary decision of some bureaucrat (I forget why). This was reversed, but the legal issues seemed never ending.

Both letters came a month after PayPal announced an abrupt shift in its terms of use. The company would no longer permit customers to use the service for purchases associated with "mature audiences," gambling, hate paraphernalia, or prescription drugs, along with a long list of other prohibitions. ...

That's a far cry from the libertarian vision founders Peter Thiel and Max Levchin originally had for PayPal.... Thiel and Levchin had hoped PayPal would grow to become an extra-governmental system of currency, something reminiscent of the world described in Neal Stephenson's novel Cryptonomicon, in which programmers use encryption to create an offshore data haven free from government control.

More class actions followed. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer cited PayPal for posting a user agreement that "wasn't clear enough." He also subpoenaed all documents pertaining to PayPal's use in online gaming sites, suggesting the company was in violation of New York gambling laws. While the price of Bitcoin (BTC) is dropping, the mining difficulty and hash rate went up. This has led some market observers to believe that we may not see a mass miner capitulation yet.

When the price drops and mining revenues decrease, miners who struggle to earn profits are forced to shut their least profitable gear off. However, Bitcoin mining difficulty, increased yesterday by 1.99%, despite major Bitcoin mining pool BTC.com estimated that it might drop by another 5% after a 7.1% drop on November 8. Now, another increase by 1.14% is expected in two weeks, though these estimations are less likely to be accurate the further they are from the event. And while the hash rate, or the computing power of the Bitcoin network, increased c. 5% since November 8, the price dropped by c. 20% in the same period of time – all BTC’s monthly gains have been completely erased, turning back the clock to the pre-rally numbers. However, the hash rate is considered to be a lagging indicator.

“No miner capitulation,” says trader and economist Alex Krüger too. "Selling, yes, capitulation, no.” He goes to explain that were miners to continue increasing capacity at the same pace since May, without rising prices, then “market is likely to experience some sort of miner capitulation in coming months, either before the halving, or triggered by the halving.” However, he says, “that is ahead of us,” given that currently there has been increased miner selling – “yet this selling activity does not represent capitulation of any kind, as most miners are profitable given current prices and difficulty, particularly so on a cash basis (i.e. ignoring capex depreciation),” Krüger says.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Two users of the Darknet market committed suicide subsequent to the execution of search warrants. Verified: Users who have enlisted with verified accounts can pay up till $10,000 worth of bitcoins per day, an up to $100,000 per month through both credit card and bank transfer.

Individual Business & Corporate: Users with Individual Business and Corporate accounts can spend any amount of bitcoins with no limits.

Verified plus Corporate accounts have no barriers as such on the number of Bitcoins that can be purchased. In order for a user to become verified, users will need to provide the following documents: a government issued id and personal information about the respective user.

Although, most people actually do not read the detailed opinions and reviews yet they just view the ratings being given.

It is to be noted that the predominance of the dissatisfied public seems to be either opposing about the concealed fees (i.e. high exchange rate), the verification process regarding the identity or either the customer support being offered via the site. It is 2018, the year that cryptocurrency will begin to takeover the world’s payment systems. In my last article, I explained what cryptocurrency is, how to buy it, and some of the hundreds of retailers that use it. In the second half of 2017, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin made incredible increases in price, and those who held it saw a huge payday. Of course, the moguls who have made significant profits from digital currency investment will need a way to cash out and avoid the tax burden. Therefore, we are now seeing several website startups where real estate sellers can list their homes or commercial properties, and buyers can purchase them with cryptocurrency. The sales have already started, and will continue to grow in the real estate market. Either that or the investors will just continue buying Amazon gift cards with Bitcoin profits.

As expected, the easiest way to conduct a sale in digital currency is for the buyer to purchase a property in full, with a seller who prefers to receive payment in cryptocurrency. This has worked well for a real estate developer in Manhattan, Benjamin Shaoul of Magnum Real Estate Group, who has clients who prefer to use Bitcoin over USD. Reasons for this could be due to taxes or the privacy of his clients.

Considering the fact that the majority of real estate buyers need to secure a mortgage in order to purchase a property, they may need to cash out their digital assets for USD in order to use as a down payment. As of today, I could not locate a mortgage company that is willing to take my cryptocurrency as payments. If you’re looking to change careers, “crypto-mortgage” is about to be a booming industry.

New websites dedicated to cryptocurrency-fueled real estate purchases are launching daily, for example, the site bitcoin-realestate.com has nearly four hundred listings in their database that can be purchased with Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), and Ethereum (ETH).

Purchasing a $415,000 home using Bitcoin Cash (BCH) worked very well for 23-year-old investor, Cary Kuo, of Seattle. Kuo used his earnings that he had made since June 2017 (from a $4500 investment) to fund the 10% downpayment on his home. This was the first cryptocurrency real estate purchase in Washington, and was a learning experience for all parties involved. Both brokers involved as well as the mortgage lender experienced cryptocurrency for the first time in this process. With the mid-January Bitcoin plummet, you can expect that press will invite new investors in, as well as motivate older investors to take their profits and invest elsewhere. With the rapidly increasing rate of real estate investment by foreign capitalists, particularly those in China, it can be anticipated that the use of cryptocurrency will speed up the process of wiring money out of their country into other markets.
