I decided it was about time to compile a convenient list with all the information and resources I could find about Claude-Antoine Prieur, also known as Prieur de la Côte-d'Or.

It's very much a work in progress: some posts, those without a link, are yet to be written. The list will be updated and edited with time.

(Not only I plan to transcribe both of them in a lighter, more readable format, but also to write a post comparing the two, though this should wait until I finish reading them fully. For now, from what I could see, none of the two could be considered a definitive Prieur biography: Paul Gaffarel didn't have access to Prieur's personal papers, resulting in a very incomplete work and inaccuracies; as far as Bouchard is concerned, he was no historian but a chemist and it shows both in his very superficial interpretation of the historical period in which Prieur lived and in the uncritical way in which he analyses primary accounts and sources about the latter.

For anyone interested in Prieur's life, I would recommend you to start from the 1946 one: despite the many criticism I personally have towards it, it's more complete, since Bouchard was granted access to Claude-Antoine's papers.)

Part Sixty-Three

Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century

The man offered no resistance as he was dragged from his horse and paraded through the streets. He'd timed it all perfectly; enough people around to whip up a violent mob, but not quite enough to tear him to pieces.

Château de Beaune loomed large ahead of them. The fields to the left of the castle were still there, blooming green vines with tiny white flowers looped along wooden stakes spiked through the field. The château was imposing and striking as ever, Martin's banner of blue and gold flying high above the buttresses.

But beside the château, to the right...Louis de Clermont felt his breath catch in his throat.

In the centuries to come they would call it a miracle. Two hundred and sixty-two meters squared, carved from striking local limestone in the Demer Gothic style, the cathedral-like mausoleum housing Yvette Bouchard's remains had taken two years to complete, three years ahead of the quickest-built churches in Europe. It had been an almost round-the-clock family effort, and Louis admired their commitment.

Louis let himself be carried into the castle and thrown onto his knees before Martin. He kept his head low, hands cupped in his lap, while the men around him bobbed into bows and kept their makeshift weapons trained on him.

'He requested an audience with Sieur' the man was a baker but he'd found a billhook from somewhere and was holding it firmly under Louis' chin. Louis tried not to sneeze from the flour clinging to the man's apron.

'I did not give your family permission to come here.' Martin growled. The men around them stood firm and Louis tried to look smaller, even more helpless and pathetic.

'The vampires' are Louis Mettler and Jürgen Wolf' Louis annunciated.

Martin froze. So did the men.

'And how in hell-' Martin looked torn between the thought of killing Louis on the spot and hearing out his explanation in case he wasn't lying, '-do you know that?'

'News filters through the twilight underground,' Louis began, his flair for the dramatic wilting immediately under Martin's deathly gaze. 'My mistress was courted at the opera who claimed that his siblings were very important. When she asked what he meant, he explained what Mettler and Wolf had done.'

'Where can I find this man?'

'Buried with the Holy Innocents'' Louise shrunk back further in the face of Martin's furious dissapointment. 'He was found slain in his apartment some days later. My mistress is in hiding, in fear for her life.'

Martin held back a sigh, gesturing for the men to leave the room. They reluctantly did so, bowing as they went. Louis stayed on the ground until Martin waved him up to his feet.

'Useful and useless.' Martin stared at Louis, 'Thank you for the information. Now-'

His smile didn't reach his eyes.

'-how to reward you?'

Louis' horse had been found wandering the wilds at the border of De Clermont land. Baldwin had heard about the bloody saddle bags, but neither he nor Philippe had looked inside. His father had ordered Pierre to burn them and Ysabeau had spread the ashes in the rose garden.

King John II had summoned them to the royal palace in Paris shortly after for ceasefire talks and Philippe had been surprised to hear that Martin had agreed to the king's request. Baldwin wasn't.

He didn't think Martin had had anything to do with Louis' untimely demise. The man was as unsubtle as a brick through a window; most likely he'd ridden over the borderline and been struck down by the first aggrieved peasant he bumped into who recognised their sigil.

Philippe should never have agreed to let him go. What was he thinking?!

Philippe had been thinking that wet-sop Louis would be just benign enough to get Martin to actually consider Philippe's proposal that Martin keep the ban on the family but let them send their workers and representatives north, passing through as quickly and quietly as possible.

A door opened and the negotiating delegation stepped through. Philippe was at the King's shoulder and he gave Baldwin a subtle wink that meant things were going well.

Baldwin nodded, forcing himself to focus on his father so that he didn't look over-

Goddamn

He looked to his right.

Martin's expression was as black as thunder since the king had his back to him and couldn't see. His hair caught the sunlight for a second from the high window and the angle caused a rainbow across his face.

He looked like an avenging angel, and the overwhelming urge to kiss him welled up inside Baldwin's chest.

Gods he's beautiful

He shouldn't do this. He really shouldn't. But Baldwin was already on his feet and moving, skirting past the last of the king's advisors shepherding His Majesty out the furthest door while everyone else milled about deciding what to do for lunch.

If he would just hear him out. If he would just listen, Baldwin was sure he could make Martin understand that he'd just been taken aback by his words, that of course he'd help him, he'd always help him, he just hadn't expected to be told to choose and the moment got away from him...

But now, here he was, standing before him again. And Martin would call him Lucius and he'd correct him, and he would explain and apologise and everything would be alright.

'Baldwin.' Martin said curtly.

Baldwin's soul shattered and broke down to his boots.

Author's Notes

The size of the mausoleum should be about the width and length of a two-storey house, but with an elevated cathedral-like roof.

Cathedrals could take anywhere between five to ten years to finish, or more! But when a family of vampires is motivated enough, and has architecture expertise, anything is possible!

The Holy Innocents' Cemetary in Paris was used from the 18th century until 1780 when, due to "overuse", it closed, and in 1786 all final corpses were removed and reinterred in the famous Catacombs. It was named after the Biblical massacre of the innocents (King Herod vs Moses: This Will Surely End Well) and Place Joachim-de-Bellay covers the area where the cemetary once was.

King John II (the Good) was king of France from 1350 to his death in 1364. He created the franc!

9/11 facts

There are a few photographs of inside the twin towers during 9/11. The only video recording of inside the towers comes from the North Tower lobby. It can be seen in the documentary '9/11' by the Naudet Brothers. They were originally filming a documentary about New York firefighters. It also contains the recording of Flight 11 crashing into the North Tower. (source 1) (source 2) (source 3. video of the crash)

There were several phone calls made on 9/11, though few have had their audio released. One from victim Peter Hanson to his father described people vomiting. The most famous released call is from Kevin Cosgrove. Cosgrove was the vice president of the Aon corporation. (source 1) (source 2)

Christine Lee Hanson, daughter of Peter and Sue Kim Hanson, was the youngest victim of 9/11 at 2 years old. She and her parents were going to Disneyland. (source)

The oldest person to die on 9/11 was Robert Norton, aged 85. He was a retired marine. Norton and his wife were about flight 11. (source. under 'fatalities' catagory.)

In total, 8 children died on 9/11 on the planes. (source)

In many pictures of the North Tower impact hole, a waving woman (and sometimes a man) can be see. Many believe her to be Edna Cintron, who worked at Marsh McLennan. But a theory points out evidence that she was likely Jeannette Lafond-Menichino, who worked at Guy Carpenter on the 94th floor. Edna worked the 97th floor of the North Tower, from which there were no survivors. (source)

No jumper has ever been officially identified, but some, such as Falling Man, have been "identified" by their families. (source 1) (source 2) (note: "faller" is the new term that many in the 9/11 community have decided to use instead. For recognition and consistency's sake, i'll use the term "jumper" in this post.)

A big brother contestant lost her cousin in the 9/11 attacks. They filmed her reaction to learning the news that her cousin wasn't able to be located. Her name was Tamatha Freeman, and more can be learned about her here. (source)

National Geographic has a personal connection to 9/11. They lost two employees when American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the pentagon. They were accompanying three children and their teachers. (source 1) (source 2) (note: The mother of Bernard Curtis III (seen in white) did an interview for the 2021 Nat Geo 9/11 documentary. it's heartbreaking, but I highly recommend it. It can be found here.)

The final death on 9/11 in New York was a homicide. His name was Henryk Siwiak. A polish immigrant, he was not killed in the attacks, but shot on the street later that night. He had gone to the wrong place mistakenly, believing he was heading to his new job. (source)

The 9/11 victims compensation fund has had a very tumultuous history. Comedian Jon Stewart was a strong advocate, and often butted heads with Mitch McConnell over it. The fight came to an end in 2019, when President Trump signed an act into law that permanently reinstated the fund. (source)

Seth Macfarlane nearly died on 9/11. He was supposed to be on American Airlines flight 11. His seat was given to Carol Bouchard. This is a common fact, but I wanted to provide evidence. Page 40 of this flight log shows his cancellation.

EMT Ernest Armstead is known for his role on 9/11 as a first responder. He is the one who spoke with the 'Black Tag woman'. His story has never once changed, though some believe he may have hallucinated her due to the graphic and stressful situation. (source. This contains very graphic content.)

Patrica Massrai learned that she was pregnant the morning of 9/11. She and her husband Louis were on the phone when she suddenly said "oh my god.". The line cut immediately after. She most likely saw flight 11 approaching from the north tower. (source)

Firefighter Gary Box was killed on 9/11, and his body was never recovered. Years later, a photo was discovered of him running to the twin towers, as his truck was caught in traffic in the Battery tunnel. (source)

Moira Smith was the only female NYPD officer to die on 9/11. (source)

A Burger King on 106 Liberty Street was a temporary NYPD headquarters on 9/11. (source)

Asbestos was outlawed in New York halfway through the construction of the twin towers. The first 40 floors of the north tower contained asbestos. Between 300 to 400 tons of asbestos was released when the tower collapsed. (source)

The first person to die during the 9/11 attacks was a man named Danny Lewin. He was killed on flight 11. He spoke arabic, and overheard the terrorists. He was stabbed to death when he tried to stop them. (source)

The 9/11 attacks have an estimated 3,000 death toll. In comparison, the Iraq war, a direct result, saw a death toll estimate of 4.5 million. (source)

CHARLOTTE ARGENT (NEE BOUCHARD) | deceased in 2005, at 59 -- stay at home mother, matriarch.

charlotte and gerard were the perfect match for one another -- the two each come from prominent families in the hunting community, and immediately hit it off when they met back in the 1960s. they marry young, and start their family soon after, determined to carry on their family legacies. they raised their four children with the same ideals and disciplines they grew up with, leaving no room to question their tactics. gerard was the clear leader, holding his control over his children through manipulation and carefully placed influence. while charlotte had a gentler approach, balancing out her husband's harsh ways of parenting with more compassion and understanding. together the two have four children -- chris, gabriel, bernard, and kate. though it's never actually confirmed, it's clear that the eldest of the four is gerard's favorite. given the tradition that women are leaders, charlotte called the shots for the family business -- while her husband executed them, often literally. unfortunately, an unexpected cancer diagnosis takes charlotte's life before any werewolf can. charlotte passes in 2005, buried in a family plot in the south of france, rocking an already fragile family dynamic.

GABRIEL ARGENT | deceased 2021, at 49 -- private security consultant & federally licensed arms dealer, hunter.

LEA DUBOIS-ARGENT | 52 -- trauma surgeon, matriarch.

in gabriel's case, second born means second place -- the argent has committed his life to living up to his parent's expectations, in both academics and the family business, only to fall short to his older brother. because of this, there's been a rift between the two since they were kids, finding in adulthood that distance is what makes the two able to deal with one another. thus, gabriel relocated to europe -- france in particular. it was decided gabriel would handle hunting affairs overseas with bernie, while chris maintained things in the states with kate. while in college, lea dubois enters the picture -- a no-nonsense surgeon to be, who's skills with the scalpel are quickly put to the test. the two marry, having three children of their own: beau (25), lucas (22), and louis (18). lea and gabriel are the mirror image of charlotte and gerard, training their children to be hunters as soon as possible. the two take a far more understanding approach, but make few exceptions regardless. after charlotte's passing, lea takes on the role of matriach for the family that's in europe, while victoria does the same stateside. despite their dedication to hunting and the code, gabriel and lea still fall short of unobtainable expectations, something that inevitably sends gabriel into an early grave. an attempt to prove himself to his father, gabriel takes on a hunt on his own -- his body is found a week later, torn to shreds from what is believed to be an animal attack. his death is nothing short of devastating, sending lea and their three sons further into the family business. as a child, allison only saw her aunt, uncle and cousins once or twice a year. she'd grown up thinking they were odd, and way too into hunting deer -- but had a good relationship with them nonetheless. after graduating, allison spent two years travelling, which included visiting/living with her aunt lea on and off, often visiting different countries with her cousins. while living in france after her mother's death, allison mostly lived with her aunt lea and cousins. she spent the majority of her time distracting herself by training with the latter, learning a majority of her combat skills from them.

BERNARD 'BERNIE' ARGENT | 49 -- cryptozoologist, parapsychologist, hunter.

there's no question that bernie is the black sheep of the argent family. while he's trained just the same as his siblings, his interested lied in the lore and knowledge of the supernatural -- rather than just cutting them in half. this turns into a career in cryptozoology, as well as parapsychology. a reputation for being a bit of a kook and a hippie made it easy to hide in plain sight, able to learn about the supernatural without arousing any suspicion. while bernie found this to be the perfect way to travel across europe, studying lore to add to the argent's ever growing bestiary -- his parents never approved of his career path, gerard going as far as calling him a disgrace to the family despite the knowledge they've gained from his traveling.

KATHERINE "KATE" ARGENT | deceased in 2023, at 43 -- 'private security consultant & federally licensed arms dealer, 'unemployed', hunter.

kate has always been the odd man out of the four argent children, being the youngest and the only girl. while the women in their family are trained to be leaders, kate has always tried to find her place as one of the boys. in true argent fashion, it was motivated by the need to prove herself to her parents -- before the thrill of the hunt and adrenaline that comes with it overtook the need to make her parents happy. there was a certain excitement that came with chasing a werewolf through the woods, playing a long con that would kill an entire family of them. despite working in the family business -- both hunting and arms dealing -- it quickly became apparent that kate was reckless, which was something that ultimately lead to her death.
