Spring Equinox in the Ancient Irish Calendar
Equinox is the date (or moment) some astronomical alignments in Ireland mark as being auspicious. Not many, mind you, but some, like the cairn on Loughcrew or the two passages of Knowth, a sort of super-alignment with quadruple significance. Though the actual alignment of Knowth is disputed, it might be a lunar alignment or not an alignment at all. The equinox is far less obvious an astronomical…

A relatively rare ‘Fog Bow’ appears above ruined Neolithic passage tombs, just as the fog began to clear on the Loughcrew Hills, County Meath.
Fog Bows are sometimes called ‘white rainbows’, the white colour is due to the much smaller size of the water droplets in fog, as opposed to the larger droplets in rain.
The larger drops of rain refract light on the curved surface of the back of droplet, which helps break the light into its constituent colours. In fog, the colours are often too weak to be seen clearly.

Loughcrew, Ireland
Hill of the Witch I hoped to be in Ireland this month, but that didn’t happen, so I’m revisiting by rereading my blog posts when I was there in late 2019, and I’ll share this virtual journey with you. I love being in Ireland for the long daylight hours of summertime, but this journey took me there to house-sit in October. It was wonderful to see how far my feet would take me most days. To visit…

DRAWING NEOLITHIC ROCK ART (Online Via London Drawing Group)
As part of my own autonomous external research, i participated in another online class dedicated to my prehistoric focus - the intriguing twist being that it was about British prehistory (we always seem to think of European cave paintings at the mention of Prehistoric)
a recurring symbol to British Stone Art was the Ring and Cup Patterns/Forms. It was believed that some prehistoric people used these forms to draw maps and lays of the land on rocks, although today the serve as a more relic-like pattern.
Automatism was involved a lot tonight through "blind drawing" and allowing drawing ink allowing to make its own forms when dripped onto wet paper.
these practices would be considered as embellishments to my porcelain forms

SAINTS FOR JULY 11
St. Abundius , Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr of Spain who faced Islamic persecution. Abundius, who was a pastor in Ananelos, was arrested in Córdoba, Spain, when he refused to abandon his Christian faith. Brought before the Caliph, the Muslim ruler of the city, he preached about Christianity and the Church. the Caliph condemned him and beheaded him. Feastday July 11
St. Oliver Plunkett, 1681 A.D. Oliver Plunkett was born in Loughcrew in County Meath, Ireland on November 1, 1625. In 1647, he went to study for the priesthood in the Irish College in Rome. On January 1, 1654, he was ordained a priest in the Propaganda College in Rome. Due to religious persecution in his native land, it was not possible for him to return to minister to his people. Oliver taught in Rome until 1669, when he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland. Archbishop Plunkett soon established himself as a man of peace and, with religious fervor, set about visiting his people, establishing schools, ordaining priests, and confirming thousands. The year 1673 brought a renewal of religious persecution, and bishops were banned by edict. Archbishop Plunkett went into hiding, suffering a great deal from cold and hunger. His many letters showed his determination not to abandon his people, but to remain a faithful shepherd. He thanked God "Who gave us the grace to suffer for the chair of Peter." The persecution eased a little and he was able to move more openly among his people. In 1679 he was arrested and falsely charged with treason. The government in power could not get him convicted at his trial in Dundalk. He was brought to London and was unable to defend himself because he was not given time to bring his own witnesses from Ireland. He was put on trial, and with the help of perjured witnesses, was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn. With deep serenity of soul, he was prepared to die, calmly rebutting the charge of treason, refusing to save himself by giving false evidence against his brother bishops. Oliver Plunkett publicly forgave all those who were responsible for his death on July 1, 1681. On October 12, 1975, he was canonized a saint.
ST. PIUS I, POPE
ST. BENEDICT, ABBOT, PATRON OF EUROPE-Founder of the Benedictine Order, Patron of Europe, Father of Western monasticism. His life is faithfully reflected in the “Rule” named after him, the spirit of which is captured in the motto, Ora et labora. The Church remembers St. Benedict on July 11.
St. Turketil , 975 A.D. Abbot and brother of King Edred of England, he served as his chancellor until 948 when he abandoned the court life and entered a monastery. He soon became abbot of Croyland and successfully established a school which was attached to the community.
St. Drostan, 610 A.D. Irish born abbot, a disciple of St. Columba. Drostan was a member of the royal Cosgrach family of Ireland. He was named the first abbot of Deer in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and is considered an apostle to Scotland. He ended his days near Glenesk, Angus, and a well is associated with him at Aberdour.
