Vanished in Vermillion by Lou Raguse
Tumblr media
Title: Vanished in Vermillion Author: Lou Raguse Series: N/A Number of Pages: 379 Genre:  Forensic Science Law & State and Local True Crime Publisher: Post Hill Press Date of Original Publication: February 7, 2023 ISBN: 978-1637587256
Not my typical read but it’s nonfiction month in my mystery book club and this was the choice. The author is a reporter for one of my local news channels so it was close to home.
Vanished in Vermillion by Lou Raguse is a true mystery story of two girls who went missing in 1971 in Vermillion, South Dakota.
The book moves in chronological order. It starts with explaining the girls home life and background of their family and then moves to the events that happened in 1971 the day they disappeared. What was last known, where they were last seen, and how the local police department handled the investigation.
Most of the middle of the book is a guessing game of what happened to the girls as their car and bodies were not found. The author goes over other events in the area and criminals that are relative to the area. The investigation of the disappearance gets handed off to several people in law enforcement and each one implements something different with their ideas.
A few people in prison are given their stories as police suspected that these inmates may have had something to do with the disappearance and one was even tried for their murders.
The ending of the book goes over the discovery of the girls bodies finally in 2013. 42 years after their disappearance the bodies are found and a hypothesis was formed on what happened to them. Many of the family and friends of the girls had died by this point but the story finally gets its closure.
I liked this book, when I’m normally not a fan of nonfiction. It wasn’t boring and the storyline kept moving. I’m glad the girls were finally found but this book really shows how disappointing local, state, and federal law enforcement officers can be. These girls could’ve been found probably in the same year they disappeared, if local law enforcement did their job in the first place. And that is scary seeing as hundreds of people are still missing in the US to date.
★★★★ I would recommend it if you’re looking for some non-fiction reading.

You can fine-tune the location and duration of a clip in your project by moving the clip’s startpoint or endpoint, or an entire frame-range selection, in small increments at once. Choose one of the following methods, depending on how you like to work.
Using the fine-tuning controls:
Using this method extends or shortens a clip in one-frame increments.
Choose iMovie > Preferences, and then click Browser at the top of the preferences pane.
The iMovie menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.
Select “Show Fine Tuning controls.”
In the Project browser, move the pointer over a clip, and then click one of the blue fine-tuning (double-headed arrow) buttons that appear at either end of the clip.
An orange selection handle appears.
Drag the selection handle to increase or decrease the clip’s duration one frame at a time.
As you drag, an indicator (+1, +2, -1, and so on) appears to show you how many frames have been added or removed.
You can extend or shorten a maximum of one second at a time, which means up to 30 frames for 30 fps projects and up to 24 frames for 24 fps projects. To shorten or lengthen a clip by more than one second, repeat steps 3 and 4.
Using the Clip Trimmer:
Using this method extends or shortens a clip in intervals of one-tenth of a second.
In the Project browser, move the pointer over a video clip, and then choose Clip Trimmer from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) that appears in the lower-left corner of the clip.
The Clip Trimmer appears, with the selected clip outlined in yellow. The dimmed frames are those from the original video clip that aren’t currently used in your project.
In the Clip Trimmer, do either of the following:
Drag the handles at either end of the yellow clip selection to set a new startpoint and endpoint.
Move the handles one frame at a time by placing the pointer near the handle that you want to adjust, and then holding down the Option key as you press the Left Arrow or Right Arrow key.
Move the entire yellow selection box to the left or right by pressing the Left Arrow or Right Arrow key, or by clicking within the box and dragging. Using this technique, you can change which video frames are selected without changing the duration of the selection.
Click Done.
Using fine-tuning on the fly:
In the Project browser, do any of the following to extend or shorten a clip. To extend a clip, there must be unused portions of the clip available:
Move the pointer near the end of the clip you want to adjust, and then hold down the Command and Option keys. When an orange selection handle appears, drag it.
Move the pointer near the end of the clip you want to adjust, and then hold down the Option key as you press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key.
To move a selected frame range, press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key to slide the frame range to the right or left.

The Ingram MAC-11 (Military Armament Corporation Model 11) is a subcompact machine pistol/submachine gun developed by American gun designer Gordon Ingram at the Military Armament Corporation (MAC) during the 1970s in Powder Springs, Georgia.(5)(6) The weapon is a sub-compact version of the Model 10 (MAC-10), and is chambered to fire the smaller .380 ACP round.(6)
This weapon is sometimes confused with the Sylvia & Wayne Daniels M-11/9, its successor the Leinad PM-11, or the Vulcan M-11-9, both of which are later variants of the MAC chambered for 9 mm Luger Parabellum cartridge.(7)(8) Cobray also made a .380 ACP variant called the M12.(9)
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) considers MAC-11 variants such as the Leinad PM-11 to be part of the 'MAC-10 class pistol.'(10)
Design(edit)
Operation(edit)
Like the larger M-10, the M-11 has open sights with the rear pinhole sight welded to the receiver. These sights are for use with the folding stock, as using them without the stock is nearly useless because of the initial jump of the weapon due to its heavy, open-bolt design. The M-11A1 also has two safety features which are also found on the Model 10A1. The charging handle rotates to 90 degrees to lock the bolt in the forward position thus preventing the weapon from being cocked. The second safety is a slider which is pushed forward to lock the trigger, which in turn pins the bolt to the rear (cocked) position. This prevents the weapon from discharging even when dropped, which is not uncommon with an open-bolt design.
Performance(edit)
Semi-automatic, Cobray MAC-11/9 with 32-round magazine and suppressor.
The rate of fire of the M-11A1 is one of the biggest complaints on the firearm. Listed as approximately 1,200 rpm (rounds per minute),(8) the MAC-11 is capable of emptying the entire 32-round magazine in less than two seconds, which many users view as a drawback.(11) Rate of fire will also vary depending on the weight of bullets used. The gun also has a selector switch that allows it to fire only one round at a time in the semi-automatic mode.
Noting the weapon's poor accuracy, in the 1970s International Association of Police Chiefs weapons researcher David Steele described the MAC series as 'fit only for combat in a phone booth.'(12)
The M-11 is the least common version in the MAC family of firearms. At the MAC-11's high cyclic rate, extreme trigger discipline is required to discharge short bursts, which are required for combat effectiveness. Without proper training, the natural tendency of the inexperienced shooter is to hold down the trigger, discharging the entire magazine in little more than two seconds, often with poor accuracy due to recoil.
Sound suppressor(edit)
A specific suppressor was developed for the MAC-11, which used wipes as baffles, instead of the reflex baffles that Mitchell Werbell III created for the MAC-10. Though wipes are less durable than reflex baffles, they had the advantage of proving quieter for the MAC-11. The suppressor is 224 mm in length and is covered with Nomex-A heat-resistant material.(1)

I was on my computer at work Tuesday morning following Twitter like I was waiting for the presidential election results to come in. The Minnesota High School League board of directors were meeting to decide about what to do about fall sports.
I was following John Millea of the MSHSL and Lou Raguse from KARE 11television on Twitter. They both were tweeting about what was happening in the board…

Kidnapper Says 'Bye, Jayme' After Pleading Guilty to Killing the 13-Year-Old's Parents
The man long suspected of killing two people in rural Wisconsin and holding their 13-year-old daughter, Jayme Closs, captive for 88 days afterward pleaded guilty to homicide and kidnapping charges on Wednesday. And in the latest instance of strange utterances from a 21-year-old who was by all accounts a living ghost before his January 10 arrest, Jake Patterson uttered, “Bye Jayme,” while leaving the courtroom, according to a local NBC reporter on hand.
Patterson set off a nationwide manhunt after he spotted Closs getting onto a school bus, shot her parents in a home invasion, and took the teen home in the trunk of his car. Closs eventually managed to escape and alert strangers, and police arrested Patterson soon afterward.
The seemingly soft-spoken man lived an unremarkable existence and didn’t leave much of an impression on teachers or neighbors. But he’s been much more active in communicating with local journalists: Patterson wrote a letter to KARE-TV reporter Lou Raguse last month that said he felt stupid and suggested he wanted to spare the Closs family as much additional pain as possible. Then, on March 15, a man claiming to be Patterson called WCCO-TV reporter Jennifer Mayerle from jail and said he loved his victim.
“We were just watching TV, playing board games, talking about stuff,” the man told Mayerle about the almost three months Closs was detained in the wake of her parents’ slaying. “We cooked a lot. Everything we made was homemade.”
Of course, the reality was a lot uglier than that. In late January, two sources told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Patterson held a Christmas party during which he kept Closs barricaded underneath his bed. In his letter to reporter Raguse, he said that this ritual took place each Saturday when his father came to visit. He also pushed back against the idea that he was a calculated killer.
“[The cops] are really good at twisting your words around, put them in different spots, straight up lie,” he wrote in a letter riddled with scribbles and textspeak. “Little mad about that. Trying to cover up their mistakes I guess. This was mostly on impulse. I don’t think like a serial killer.”
In fact, authorities said, on the night of the kidnappings, Patterson took out the light inside his car so that it would not be illuminated when he entered or exited the vehicle and shaved his head to avoid leaving DNA evidence. He also apparently attempted the kidnapping two times before deciding the conditions were right.
Regardless of whether it was premeditated or on impulse, Patterson faces life in prison for the homicide charges, as well as a sentence of up to 40 years for the kidnapping. Closs, meanwhile, was said to be living with an aunt now serving as her guardian, and her hometown of Barron was reportedly planning some kind of benefit later this spring.

Accused Jayme Closs kidnapper says he’ll plead guilty: Report
Accused Jayme Closs kidnapper says he’ll plead guilty: Report Accused Jayme Closs kidnapper says he’ll plead guilty: Report https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
A Minnesota television station reported Thursday that the Wisconsin man charged with kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs says in a letter from jail that he plans to plead guilty.
KARE-TV reported that suspect Jake Patterson’s Feb. 28 letter was in response to a letter from a station reporter. Patterson wrote that he planned to plead guilty because he didn’t want Jayme’s family “to worry about a trial,” the station said.
Patterson, 21, is also charged with killing Jayme’s parents in an Oct. 15 attack at the family’s home near Barron, about 90 miles (145 kilometres) northeast of Minneapolis in western Wisconsin. Prosecutors say Patterson spotted Jayme getting off a school bus near her home and made up his mind to take her. He’s accused of holding Jayme for 88 days in a cabin about an hour north of Barron before she escaped in January.

In the letter attributed to Patterson, he wrote to reporter Lou Raguse that he had “huge amounts” of remorse and “I can’t believe I did this.”
A photo of one part of the letter posted on the station’s website showed the words “I’m Sorry Jayme!” in large balloon letters, followed by “For everything. I know it doesn’t mean much.”

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told The Associated Press he could not comment on the report. KARE reported that Fitzgerald told the station he was aware that Patterson had sent a letter to a KARE reporter.
Jayme’s family said they’d been told about the letter by police, according to KARE.

Patterson’s attorneys did not immediately respond to messages from AP.
He is being held on $5 million bail pending a March 27 arraignment, where he’s expected to formally enter a plea.

Charm by Tracy Wolff (Crave #5)
Tumblr media
Title: Charm Author: Tracy Wolff Series: Crave #5 Number of Pages: 592 Genre:  Teen & Young Adult Vampire Fiction Publisher: Entangled: Teen Date of Original Publication: November 8, 2022 ISBN: 978-1649371492
**THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS**
Honestly, this book was so bad I’m going to keep this short and sweet. I stand by my previous review for book 4. This series should’ve either ended with book 4 or had Jaxon and Flint as the main characters ever since book 1.
The storyline from Grace’s point of view is absolutely obnoxious. She’s the weakest, most selfish heroine I’ve ever read for a YA series and now in this book Wolff goes back in time and shows how she cheats on Jaxon with his brother! How wonderful! As if Wolff can’t degrade her character anymore…and yet again slam Jaxon’s yet again. Ironically in the beginning of book 6 she has Grace apologizing to Jaxon, so she must’ve gotten some hate for it….
As for the other characters. Hudson is a completely unrealistic character. A goody two shoe who’s somehow supposed to be this tough vampire prince. Laughing out loud…Flint doesn’t nearly get as much time in the books as he should, and now he’s dating Jaxon who should’ve been the main character all along. Unfortunately Wolff likes to bash him throughout the series, makes you wonder why she bothered creating such a punching bag.
I won’t even bother with the ridiculous storyline. Nearly 600 pages of Grace and Hudson that was just blah blah blah. Completely irrelevant to the series. It’s like she got contracted for another book and had to BS an entire one just to get it to the publisher.
I will read book 6 to finish out the series but I have laughably low hopes for it.
★ wouldn’t recommend this series at all to be honest.

Drawing Dead by Patrick Logan

Title: Drawing Dead Author: Patrick Logan Series: Chase Adams FBI #3 Number of Pages: 247 Genre:  Police Procedurals Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Date of Original Publication: May 7, 2018 ISBN: 978-1718857995
Woohoo, first book down for the year on the first day of the year! Off to a good start! Happy 2024 everyone!
Drawing Dead is book three of Patrick Logan’s Chase Adams FBI series. I started this series during my local mystery book club. The storyline revolves around a woman in the FBI who has severe trauma after her little sister was kidnapped years before. She’s also a drug addict and can’t keep it separate from the job.
I like that these stories are easy reads. The storylines and settings are different in each book and Logan keeps it entertaining. For the most part I also like the characters in each of these books. Logan has kept a consistent partner for Chase within the FBI and his character starts to develop more in the third book. I like that this book toggled to his point of view of things.
I don’t care for Chase’s drug use / background in these books. I’m hoping after this book that Logan works to move Chase on from that. I feel like it’s a common theme among a lot of police crime series to have the main character ailed with addiction problems.
★★★★ Will read book 4, would recommend the series if you’re looking for some light reading.
