Los Super Seven to Reunite for Democracy
- “It’s great to be able to get the band back together one more time in support of such a hugely important cause,” Steve Berlin says
Los Super Seven is reuniting for a concert benefitting democracy in Texas and war relief in Ukraine.
This time around, the revolving-door group will include Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas and Steve Berlin; Gaby Moreno; Los Texmaniacs; and others.
The June 16 gig at Los Angeles’ Ukrainian Culture Center is Los Super Seven’s third concert since 2018. Proceeds benefit Texas Turnout and the center’s war-relief efforts in Ukraine.
The group formed in 1998 and has released three albums.
“There’s nothing better than enjoying a great night of fantastic music while doing our part in supporting voting rights in Texas,” Berlin said in a statement.
“It’s great to be able to get the band back together one more time in support of such a hugely important cause.”

"Texas music is known for its sense of place, whether it’s Western swing, guitar-powered electric blues, or Dirty South hip-hop. But at least one Texas city, and one specific part of that city, can claim a sound all its own: the Westside Sound of San Antonio.
The Westside Sound refers to a specific place and time, beginning in the 1950s, when Mexican American teenagers in San Antonio first heard rock’n’roll. Budding musicians from across the city formed bands playing music that incorporated rhythm and blues, often with a heavy horn section, and influences of swing, conjunto, and country. Sometimes referred to as “Chicano Soul,” the music drew on the early rock’n’rollers from New Orleans like Fats Domino and emphasized slow-dance standards known as “bellyrubbers.”
But unlike scenes in other places, the Westside Sound never completely went away. Its popularity persists thanks to veteran San Antonio musicians and fans championing their city’s native sound. You can hear the influence of the Westside Sound in songs like “Hey Baby Kep Pa So,” by enduring San Antonio keyboardist Augie Meyers, and in the music of younger musicians such as Los Texmaniacs, Garrett T. Capps, Mitch Webb and the Swindles, Adrian Quesada, and Jonny Benavidez..."

Tagged by @missanthropicprinciple. Thanks!
Last song I listened to: “Polka Palitos” -- Los Texmaniacs
Last film watched: North by Northwest (somehow I’d never seen it. Was pretty disappointing, honestly.)
Currently watching: Umm...PBS NewsHour? The Decline and Fall of the American Empire? No fictional shows at the moment.
Currently reading: The Hopkins Manuscript by R.C. Sherriff
Craving: True liberty and justice for all. Also a grape soda.
Tagging: Anybody who sees this and wants to answer the questions. It’s always interesting.

Los Super Seven to Play Benefit for Texas Turnout
- Gig is May 24 in Austin
David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas and Steve Berlin are getting the other band back together.
The combined 60 percent of Los Lobos will perform with Ruben Ramos, Rick Treviño and Los Texmaniacs May 24 as Los Super Seven at Austin’s Radio East for a gig benefitting the voter-registration organization Texas Turnout.
Other guests, including John Doe, will also play.
“On behalf of Los Lobos and Los Super Seven, we are delighted to be part of a Concert for Democracy,” Berlin said in a statement that echoed the one he issued when the band last played in 2023.
“There’s nothing better than enjoying a great night of fantastic music while doing our part to support voting rights in Texas. It’s great to be able to get the band back together one more time in support of such a hugely important cause.”
