Royal Exchange and a few families

This house used to be the “Doss” house. It’s across the street from the 2 big towers in town – where I have placed my police and military rabbithole rugs.  Anyway, I don’t plan on using all the EA rabbitholes in this world, but today – while redoing a family in CAS  and then their home – I decided to have the parents go into the business career. I really don’t want the journalism branch, but since EA was lazy, and didn’t split up the business/journalism RH, I’m stuck. Oh well.

Anyway, I decided to convert this house into the Royal Exchange – where sims can go to convert their gems and whatnot into simoleons. They also go here to pay their taxes – which works out really well for the Crown, since they keep a record of all exchanges, so they pretty much know how many simoleons a sim has. Anyway, right out front is bloody stump and an axe. A not-so subtle reminder to not cheat the Crown.

Inside, it’s pretty straight-forward. The pictures on the wall are of His Majesty and his 2 queens – and yes, one is deceased. Like Anne Boleyn, she failed in her royal duty and met a similar fate. That door in the final picture, leads to the “vault” – aka: my rabbithole rug.

I’ve also been gradually working on the families who live here - changing out their basegame stuff to garb from TSM and other sources. This first house belongs to the Lobster sisters. But since it’s BIG and I’ve been snagging sims from other EA worlds for this one, I decided to move in that Lorna McCann sim from Dragon Valley, and give the other two ladies her last name. They are now all three sisters, and they don’t particularly like one-another. 

This is Claire - one of the sims who came with the save-game. She is the town fortune teller. I know the name of that lot was Sansas’s Fortune etc, but this lady is such a grump that none of the locals are brave enough to point that out to her.

And these are her 2 sisters. The one with the cane, is Caroline (she works as a cook) and the other, is Lorna from DV. She’s one of the healers in town. They also have a cat, who’s out hunting somewhere.

This house belonged to the Meatlow family - a sim and her dog. But since it’s also BIG, I moved in that Murphy sim from Dragon Valley. In this town history, Siobahn owns this house, and her sister, and her sister’s mangy mutt, moved in with her. (All the sims now have the surname Murphy)

This was the little sim who came with the house - M something. Anyway, I decided to make her an acrobat - since I converted the old schoolhouse lot into a live show venue. Since she’s in the “entertainment” field, she gets to forgo dresses. To help her with her career, I gave her the “clumsy” and “shy” traits. Needless to say, her career is not going too well.

And this is Siobahn from DV. I got rid of that skanky outfit EA gave her. She may be a singer - and nice ladies didn’t really go into any entertainment fields back then - but she considers herself a lady and is on the lookout for some minor lord to latch onto. She is NOT happy to have a sister move in with her. And definitely doesn’t like her flea-bitten mutt. 

And yes, I do actually write histories for all my sim families. Ask Tedhi about it sometime!

NewsRevue may be back every year but it’s always an entirely new show! This Guinness World Record-breaking, Fringe First-winning, Perrier finalist, news-based song and sketch show is where you should come if you’re in need of a cathartic dose of comic exasperation - all in the spirit of free expression.

Although NewsRevue is a Fringe stalwart its content changes all the time, reflecting the very latest world events; the Edinburgh show is a highlight of this year’s news so expect the very best of British satire with the demise of democracy, Brexit and, of course, the unavoidable Trump!

And, as Napoleon once said, 'In politics, absurdity is not a handicap'. The excellent writing, superlative performances and original takes on current affairs make this a must-see at the Fringe every year.

What was the inspiration for this performance? The News! For NewsRevue, if it's in the news we'll probably have something to say about it! Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas? Performance will always be the perfect space for the discussion of ideas. Productions such as ours shed light on current events and the people who run our day to day lives in ways that people least expect. I mean it's always easier to discuss UKIP after you've seen Nigel Farage rap at you.

How did you become interested in making performance? I first became interested in developing my own work when I began performing Stand Up Comedy which was my first experience of publicly sharing my own written work. Is there any particular approach to the making of the show? Due to the fast nature of the show and the need to keep material up to date and fresh, the rehearsal and development process is equally as fast paced.   Our director Katie Pesskin directed the show last year when the result of the Brexit vote and the immediate repercussions in the British government had a huge impact on the show as every day the news was becoming old news. Things were changing exceptionally quickly which was hard work for the cast but very exciting for audiences. Does the show fit with your usual productions? I have always loved performing comedy but I have never had the opportunity to take part in something so fast paced with such a huge turn around in material, which while challenging is also a really exciting process to be a part of. What do you hope that the audience will experience? I hope the audience experience a great sense of catharsis and enjoyment that comes with making fun of the nightmare which is our current political climate. In simpler terms I just hope they have as much fun watching Donald Trump sing and dance as much as I have playing him! What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience? Just keep on laughing, if we find it funny then hopefully the audience will too.

Producer Emma Taylor comments, I feel as committed to and enthralled by NewsRevue today as when I first started producing it in 2001. As the daughter of a former refugee and political prisoner, producing NewsRevue is a daily reminder of how lucky we are for our freedom of speech and that we are allowed to mock the powers that be through gags, song and dance.

2016 director Katie Pesskin is returning to the show for a second year running. She comments, 2016 was an incredibly exciting time for NewsRevue. The result of the Brexit vote and the immediate repercussions in the British government had a huge impact on the show as every day the news was becoming old news. Things were changing exceptionally quickly - hard work for us and very exciting for our audiences! It was NewsRevue doing what it does best and such a memorable show.

The show is acknowledged as a highly successful springboard for all the incredible talents involved, many of whom started their careers on the show before scaling great comedy heights. London Book Fair - Day 3

ISIS Publishing may not be the most alluring name to be trading under at the moment but that hasn’t held back Stand 4N7g [photo below] at the London Book Fair, which closed Thursday 16 March 2017. It could be a cunning move to switch tactics to literature.  Publishers try valiantly to bore us to death by churning out mediocre genre novels which are pulped soon after release, and this could be ISIS’s new tactic.

Sadly ISIS Publishing is nothing of the sort, an entirely decent firm whose name - like Bin Laden Construction - has taken an unfortunate turn. The fair’s closing day has a slight end-of-term feeling, and many of the publishers start packing up and leaving after lunch - they’re probably confusing it with Friday at the office.  The stands of some of the the giant firms seem gradually depleted of staff.  As the afternoon moves on there’s conspicuous dismantling and packing-up round the halls. Not everyone.  Kindle Direct Publishing and Amazon Publishing, Bonnier, IngramSpark, Russia and many others play the game and keep working till closing time.  And of course, the Publishers Association - makes you proud to be British. The Publishers Association in a literary event does suggest a question.  Should there be an apostrophe?  Waterstones, which you’d think would know better, caused a small war among grammarians by dropping their apostrophe a few years back.  Not, however, at their Kensington High Street branch just up the road from the Book Fair’s Olympia venue.  Kensington is stuffed with writers.  Their Kensington store says Waterstone’s on the outside - probably to protect their staff from being pummelled with brioche.

Every kind of business connected with the production of books has a stand.  Russell Kerridge is managing director of ImageWrite Book Publishing Services.  Editor and actor Joelle Skilbeck is on the stand of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders Trade Association.  Maria Vassilopoulos is sales and marketing executive for the British Library.  The Royal Academy, Victoria & Albert Museum - and other public institutions - have stands.

Sonya Greenhough is sales director for Helen Exley Gifts - another firm hard at work till the end.  Liz McCann is marketing manager at JP Medical Publishers.  Mr Uma Desu is CEO of Intelli India and the author of the novel Levona’s Tears.  Alex Carr is executive editor-at-large for Amazon Publishing and explains that they select manuscripts from books published through Kindle Direct Publishing, and take submissions from literary agents.  Islam International Publications has a stand.

Sachin Virkar is at Kaleido Graphics.  Peter Newsom does export sales for Watkins Media.  Melissa Chin is content administrator at publisher Type & Tell.  Grace Yang is strategic account manager at Reed Exhibitions for China Shanghai International Children's Book Fair [17-19 November 2017].  Wendy French is a specialist in publishing services.

Jonathan Williams is managing director for Cicerone, the distinguished publisher of hearty and energetic books for those inclined to hike inclines: 'walking, trekking, climbing and mountaineering, cycle touring and hill and mountain skills’.

Nick Singh is the massively helpful UK customer support at international printer IngramSpark, known by email by everyone who writes to them and charming in person here on their stand.

Rebecca Souster is account manager at the printer Clays; however Rebecca Souster is anonymously the author of by far the best book on priting for self-publishers - Clays Guide To Independent Publishing [cover picture below]: a remarkable (and free) book for a company to produce as, rather than plugging the company’s products (which it does, but with disarming modesty), it sets out in quite remarkable detail every fact about printing: exactly how lithographic printing and digital get ink onto paper; the grain direction of papers, covers, how to work out page count from manuscript pages; the need to licence fonts; how to pick typefaces.  It’s both a nerd’s guide and elegant deconstruction of the manuscript-to-reader process written in blissfully graceful language.  Give Rebecca a pay rise, Clays, and do make it a large one.

Cute rabbit inadvertently drawn into a bomb scare at airport

The bomb squad of the Australian Federal Police was called to Adelaide Airport on Wednesday after a pink Lorna Jane bag was left unattended in a female toilet.

But instead of holding dangerous items, the bag contained a young male dwarf rabbit wearing a red harness and no identification. Police called in rescue officers from the RSPCA, who took in the animal for safety.

"This is the first job of this kind that I’ve come across in my 26 years of service with RSPCA," rescue officer Van Loenen said in a statement online.

"The young male rabbit is clearly very well socialised and cared for. He is even harness trained. The police had put him in a large box and gotten some carrots from Subway, so he had some fresh shredded carrot to munch on while they waited for me to arrive."

The situation was an unusual one for police, who didn't take any risks when they received the call.

"We treat everything in the aviation space very seriously, but our bomb appraisal officers certainly weren’t expecting to find a rabbit in unattended baggage. Thankfully the rabbit is safe and well, and hopefully the owner will be found," AFP acting state manager Commander Brett McCann added.

The hunt is now on for the owner of the rabbit, and rescue officers have some theories to why they abandoned the animal.

"A couple of scenarios came to mind — his owner could have been leaving the country and knew by leaving their pet in a populated area he would be found and cared for. Or they may have been planning on smuggling him on board a plane, but backed out at the last minute," Van Loenen said.

For now, the rabbit has been given the name "Boeing" by RSPCA staff.

NFDA Introduces the 2018 Meet the Mentors Program Participants

Brookfield, Wis. – The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is proud to announce the names of the 50 funeral professionals who will attend the association’s Meet the Mentors program, March 11-13 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. Meet the Mentors has been wholly funded by the Funeral Service Foundation since the program’s 2011 inception.

During Meet the Mentors, these 50 funeral professionals who are either age 40 or under or new to the profession (first licensed within the last five years) will have an opportunity to meet, learn from and talk with innovative and successful funeral professionals. It’s also an opportunity to network and form relationships with other new professionals.

The names of the 50 participants were announced last week through a series of video drawings, which were shared on the NFDA website and social media sites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

About Meet the Mentors

During Meet the Mentors, attendees will meet, learn from, and talk with three innovative and successful funeral professionals: Matthew Baskerville, CFSP, CPC, CCO, owner of Reeves & Baskerville Funeral Homes, which has locations in Coal City, Gardner, Morris and Wilmington, Ill.; Erlinda Valdez, general manager of Wallin Funeral Homes, which has locations in Sanger, Fowler, Riverdale and Parlier, Calif.; and Victor C. March, Sr., president and CEO of March Funeral Homes in Baltimore, Md. March also serves on the Funeral Service Foundation Board of Trustees. Baskerville is a 2013 Meet the Mentors alum.

There is no cost to participate in the Meet the Mentors program itself. The Funeral Service Foundation’s grant provides exclusive, career-transforming access to three mentors and covers attendees’ registration fees, two nights’ lodging and select meals. The 50 individuals selected to attend only pay for their transportation to the program.

More than 600 young professionals and emerging leaders have benefited from the Meet the Mentors program, which underscores the Foundation’s mission to support all of funeral service in building meaningful relationships with the families and communities it serves. The program is part of the Foundation ‘45 Awards, which are designed to transform the careers of funeral service professionals through scholarships, awards, resources and mission-focused outreach.

Getting out and traveling the world is a popular bucket list item, something which many of us aspire to throughout life. Whether it’s planning a visit to a particular place or doing a grand worldwide tour, the thirst for travel is something the majority of us will experience at some point.

But while you are planning your next adventure, it’s important to spare a thought for the countries, cultures and people you will be visiting. Although this depends on where you will be traveling to, in many areas you are highly likely to come into contact with a vast majority of different cultures, beliefs and ways of life; it’s vital to recognize and celebrate these differences wherever you go.

Similarly, you should always work to ensure that you are a caring, thoughtful and considerate visitor. Aim to banish the rude tourist stereotype and instead, leave your footprint on the world in a positive manner.

Here are five ways in which you can work to make a difference on your travels.

Project Participation

While the idea of heading abroad to volunteer or working with an organization in order to provide a positive impact on the area you are visiting won’t appeal to everyone, for some, this is the ultimate way to get out and see the world while contributing to the future of people across the world. Learning Languages

When you travel to a country where the locals speak a different language to your own, communication can be tricky at times. Although many people in popular tourist hotspots will speak English, if you’re traveling off the beaten track, don’t expect people to automatically speak your language. It’s always good practice to learn some keywords and important phrases that you might need before you travel, just in case you run into difficulties or encounter the language barrier. After all, why should you expect the locals to do all the work and learn your language if you refuse to learn theirs?

Education and Inclusivity

Traveling is a constant learning curve – no matter where you go, you will always be learning about different cultures and embracing an entirely different way of living. While it may sound obvious, it’s always important to keep in mind the fact that your home away from home may not actually be like your real home, particularly when it comes to cultural differences and an alternative lifestyle. Instead of becoming rude or frustrated when things don’t happen as you expect them to, try to embrace these differences and just go with the flow. If you’re worried about what’s expected of you in a particular country or culture, you can always do some research and brush up on the culture and etiquette before you travel.

Of course, these are just a few tips and suggestions. In reality, the possibilities for making a difference while you are traveling are endless.
