𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 in her gaze only fueled his amusement, he can't explain why he took such pleasure in pressing her buttons. or perhaps its simply because she responded so strongly. to most it would surely look like they had vendetta against one another, but kalore knew underneath all of her fight, there was affection for him. not one she'd admit. the verbal sparring that occurred between the two was something he thoroughly enjoyed most days, even if he was less than welcoming some of those days. "i would say the same to you, you're as overconfident and cocky most days, or did i imagine the. many times you boast of your abilities? i happen to believe i wear it rather well." his onyx gaze was still glinting, but the words she didn't utter, of her shadows. he might not be a shadowsinger, but he had his daemati abilities, one he relied on heavily, too. a skill he couldn't utilize here, which did momentarily annoy him. "yes, so long as you don't allow them to become a weakness." his daemati abilities were placed on hold for the spying he had wished to do now with the other court high rulers. as him, the spymaster was missing the night, it was far too bright here for his liking, too, except that she was able to use her shadows to even cope with the change.
he didn't respond, they both knew he'd guessed correctly. "our high lord has more pressing matters to worry about then who his second in command is spending time with. you lot have an aberrant habit of annoying and amusing me." it was the most unusual words to ever be heard from him, they understood his temperament, more often then not, he liked being left to his own vices. but being on unknown lands for now, he preferred remaining with his night court people when he wasn't tied up with business matters. it was the best way he could describe his relationship with the inner circle, though one that varied depending on who he is facing. with siara it had always been a tit for tat relationship, but one can't ever say she didn't know how to go toe to toe with the most difficult of people like himself. she wasn't wrong, not entirely, he didn't mind her company, with his drink, it looked as if she could use it, too. when she slid beside him , the two made their way to the liquor room. "there's no shame in admitting you enjoy my company, i tend to have that affect on people." kalore couldn't help but toss with a faint smirk. although, he knew, as him, she'd rather be with familiars than the hoards of strangers they were living with for the coming days.
eyes instantly narrow at the second nickname with the word ‘ little ‘ in it. siara shouldn’t make it so obvious when kalore annoys her, he would never forget a nerve once struck. the two were similar in that regard, once they found something that annoyed another, they couldn’t help but exploit it. her fingers itch to grasp the knife at her thigh, but siara manages to refrain. she wouldn’t actually wish to hurt the second in command either, but gods if he didn’t have each of her pressure points mapped out it seemed. the game they played was an interesting one, to some it would appear as if they despised each other, but siara had no true hatred for the man. he didn’t need to know whether she spoke to him in endearment or otherwise, however. “ overconfidence is not becoming, commander. ” she finally says. the statement of her shadows isn’t untrue, siara has relied on them for her entire life. she’s not sure how to explain it to anyone who hasn’t lived her life. “ i rather think that it’s good to use every tool one has at their disposal. ” she states instead of explaining her inner thoughts. the shadows helped calm her here in the capital, siara was itching to leave, a creature of the night and illyria and not one for the sun. why was it so bright ? she didn’t even feel safe flying here, and her wings ached behind the glamour that hid them so well. a small fire lit up in her eyes, but siara extinguished it very quickly. she had no illusions that kalore hadn’t seen it, but she would not acknowledge it either. “ i believe you’re imagining things, kalore. ” words have little effort, she just won’t miss a chance to poke back either. siara’s eyebrow cocks once more, surprise briefly across her features. “ you can just admit to desiring my company, i promise not to tell our dear high lord. ” a lie, and they both knew it, but siara closed the gap between the pair to take him up on the offer. something strong sounded like just the remedy for this dreaded place.

Working Title Character List
Playable Characters: First Generation
Kallen- The protagonist. The son of a local lord, starts out a bit rash/carefree/irresponsible, but matures and grows as a character throughout the story.
(Friend)- Best friend of Kallen, and the only other survivor of (Doomed Hometown). The son of one of Kallen’s father’s knights, and a knight in training himself.
(Mysterious Person)- The only person found alive in (Doomed Hometown), but never actually lived there. Remembers dying in the (Jinkuro’s clan) massacre, and has no idea how they are alive again. Is just as eager to figure out the mystery as Kallen and (Friend). The strategic advisor of the group.
(Noble Scion)- more than slightly arrogant and well aware of his own title. His stepmother tried to poison him as a child, leading to his trust issues, particularly toward women. Is an asshole more often than not, because it keeps people at an arms length, but actually respects people who call him on it and fight back. Swordsman. “Antidote”/“Immunity”, neutralizes toxic abilities such as ‘Poison Strike’ and ‘Grisly Wound’
(Dancer)- Possibly some kind of pacifist healer/dancer combination? Not nessessarily an actual dancer either, perhaps a ‘Brewmaster’? Special skills include creating health recovery items, healing, and ‘invigorating draught’ (allows character to move again) “These hands…were not meant for violence. This body was not given to me so that I could rob others of the bodies given to them. Strength is given to us so that we might use it to *create*, not destroy.” -Dancer/ “Brewmaster”
Caedrin- Captain of the Royal Guard and Allis’s uncle. A stern man with unwavering loyalty to the crown. Formerly the leader of an infamous band of highwaymen, but due to an unknown incident put that life behind him. Guardian of his niece, Allis. Played a major role in the massacre of (Jinkuro’s clan), but did so to earn a royal pardon so he could give his orphaned niece a better life. Regrets his actions and knows they were wrong, but wouldn’t change his choice even if he had the ability to. Is willing to give up his life to pay for his past misdeeds, as long as his innocent niece is spared. Great Knight. Something to do with his past as a bandit leader
Cerys- a scholarly mage who works in the royal library. Curious about everything and the lore expert of the group, she also doesn’t seem to have any sense of danger or self-preservation instinct when her curiousity is piqued. Didn’t get out of the library much before joining up with Kallen. Elemental Mage. “Speed Reader”, ups effective speed when using tomes
Vikarya- Jinkuro serves her as an advisor. Wants to conquer Kallen’s kingdom. Winds up being captured before eventually joining Kallen’s group after the death of (King). Coulevrinier.
Allis - Youngish girl kidnapped by the villain at some point. Isn’t too young (ie, old enough to be on the battlefield), but young enough Jinkuro sees her as a ‘child’. Actually Caedrin’s niece who he took in after his brother and sister-in-law’s deaths.
Siara- a mysterious woman encountered by Kallen’s group at various points in the story, but doesn’t reveal her true identity and purpose until lategame. Is actually the royal spymaster for (King)’s country, working to find out the truth behind the massacre of (Jinkuro’s clan). Eventually finds out (King) was the one behind it, and smuggles Jinkuro into the castle out of ‘duty’ to her ‘code’. Becomes playable after Caedrin’s death. Spymaster
Manon- A Lancer working as a member of the royal army. She comes off as mysterious and serious at first, but is actually quite eccentric and tries to deliberately cultivate a ‘Dark and Mysterious’ persona. Lancer
Danielle- the traitor, recruited Chapter 1. One blue eye, one green eye. Cleric/Earlygame Healer.
(Tomboy)- Cassia’s hired muscle/bodyguard, a former prize fighter. Fighter
Cassia- Princess Cassia has left her home country for… reasons that she is incredibly evasive about. Smiles often, usually to decieve people. Archer. Something to do with her deceptive nature and the way she lies as easily as breathing.

Nikalis-Son of Vikarya. Coulevrinier. “Stubborn Pride”, gives some kind of boost when he’s several spaces away from any allies/not paired up

(Mystery’s Child)-
(Noble Scion’s Child)-

(Taguel Child)- (Taguel)’s child Taguel
(Kitsune Child)- (Kitsune)’s child Kitsune

Jinkuro- A Necromancer and strategist for Vikarya. Has hidden motives in the beginning of the game. Only survivor of the (Jinkuro’s clan) massacre, wants to revive his fallen family and punish the country he feels is responsible for their deaths. Has a strong sense of justice. Is responsible for the destruction of (Doomed Hometown)
(King)- the current king of Kallen’s country. Sometime in the past, ordered the massacre of (Jinkuro’s clan), and enlisted the help of Caedrin to carry it out.

siara almost wished kalore were trying harder to anger her, but he never did quite do that on purpose, did he ? the commander annoyed her in spite, she knew, but she wasn’t sure if he ever intended to actually make her upset. even still, she didn’t wish to feel the nervousness, the tension in her bones at what the night might bring. perhaps she was pushing too much into this dynamic of theirs, playing with the commander more than normal and uttering things to keep him on his toes repeatedly rather than just once or twice. but she was enjoying his reactions, drinking them in and savoring every moment. it made everything all the more bearable, it made her content to stay at his side throughout the night. oh what a sight that must be, the pair of them whispering and speaking as if they were the only ones present. siara found she would use anything to cling to her sanity, and it was odd that the man who drove her past it was managing to allow her a better grip upon it.
the moment they met, siara had never feared or shied away from the commander, second only to their high lord. the dance they began had never seemed to stop, different from how she interacted with any of the other inner circle members or those of the high family. still, siara kept her distance from them all, they may see her occasional laugh or smile, but they didn’t know everything about the half illyrian. they didn’t know all that she had been through and the same rang true for the man beneath her fingertips. he knew what she allowed him to know, and she hoped the semblance of trust they shared meant he didn’t pry with his mind tricks. siara wasn’t sure if it did anything, but she often imagined her shadows within her mind as well, barriers to the parts of herself she wished none to meet nor even see herself. the parts she left within the war camps, the feral side of her that had to play to survive. would the inner circle think of her the same if they met that part of her ? the part that was as dark as the shadows she controlled ? siara doubted it, and thus she kept it at bay, even from the man who might just be able to handle it. not that she’d ever share that with him. it was better this way, play their little game of banter and wit, amuse one another, annoy one another, and then return back to their duties with interactions as need be. she didn’t detest the lord beneath her fingertips in the slightest, but siara could smell the danger he offered long before she’d ever admit it existed. her instincts kept her warded even when her mind didn’t find him a threat.
she found herself even more thankful that her wings were hidden away once more. with how close they stood, siara didn’t trust the commander not to touch them. did he know how sensitive they were ? she’d kept them away from the man who liked to rile her up. he’d surely use that to get on her nerves without realizing how much more it did. siara didn’t play coy when she desired someone, but the commander was an interesting difference entirely. did she wish for him to warm her bed once and never again ? much like her other relationships, it wouldn’t be a change in pace. but that could ruin things between them, the interesting relationship they shared that kept her entertained and amused. was siara afraid ? perhaps not, but she also quite enjoyed what they had already, change was terrifying to the half illyrian. even she couldn’t deny that darkness swirling around them, growing the more they spoke. oh, it was dangerous, but for once siara did not run from what the commander evoked in her. she offers a sly smile, dark eyes sparkling with danger and mischief. “ perhaps i desire to see your reactions. it’s quite fun to surprise the second in command of the court of night. ” a truth, but she didn’t wish to say much else. eyebrow quirks at the mention of suitors, “ the same could be said for you, grey. ” he’d not walked away either, continued to gravitate closer until she’d not realized when the distance between them had become so small. a laugh, quick and amused. “ or perhaps you are not immune to mine, commander. ” questions she, curiosity lacing her gaze. but his words had drawn her in far more than she meant, and siara felt ensared in the gaze that did not break from her own. few could ever hold her gaze, kalore did so unwaveringly. “ difficult to encourage your ego ? always. ” she spent more time belittling it, knowing he could handle it. as if called, her shadows swirled beneath her fingertips, dancing across his white coat before they dispersed back into her hand. they did look far better on him than she cared to admit.
siara’s shadows would normally swirl between her skin and anothers when touched, but for some reason it didn’t happen this time with kal. curious. did he dive into her mind in that moment ? once again, she chose to use that delicate trust that he would not. siara pulls a slow breath into her lungs, every smell is scented with kalore and stars when had they gotten so close ? she could feel the breath of his words across her face, and were she any weaker woman she might have blushed or knees buckled. but siara was a warrior first and foremost, she knew how to hold her ground dispute the strange things kalore managed to get out of her. “ i’m unsure of what you’re talking about. ” she says, defense as weak as the words offered. her head cocks, and when he pulls his hand away she ponders her words carefully. “ when you deserve to see that side of me. ” the growling little demon that was bred in illyria was not one for this ballroom, she’d hidden her reaction from both kalore and the masses in attendance. siara had a strong feeling that her little pet names did not have the same reaction on kalore as his did upon her, but she couldn’t help but keep offering them. was it a game still ? did she enjoy his reactions too much ? the questions remained unanswered, quickly ushered into the depths of her mind protected by her shadows. “ i prefer darling to little. ” she admits, still annoyed in his tone and his words. kalore possessed too much confidence for his own good. “ yours is one i have never needed to dig much into, dear. ” another term, mentioned to see what he might do in response. his question draws her eyebrows up, why was he asking ? “ i’m not. ” she admits quietly, not ashamed, but it’s hardly everyone’s business either. another laugh slips from siara, and she dances her fingers atop his chest. “ if i wished to steal your heart, kalore grey, i would already have it. ” where had that caution gone ? certainly it was not present now. his response catches her more by surprise than she intends to admit, the reaction across her eyes gone as quickly as it came but she’s certain he caught it. “ are you sure you’d be up for the task ? ” and when had she become so bold ? at least, with kalore, that was. a devious smile curls her lips, and siara can’t help but let her amusement seep out. “ is that a promise or a threat ? ”
𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 utter words for the commander to sense how out of place she felt here, though to most she appeared entirely at ease, there was a tenseness about her frame that only he could recognize. siara only seemed to feel at ease was at their night court and around her shadows, and he has no doubt she was perhaps was wishing for them. her shadows she had forgone entirely tonight as it would be unfitting to attend such an event with that moving about her. although as they remained in each other's presence, it seemed this banter seemed to distract her, he could visibly see her relax, but that could easily be of having a familiar near her. still, he cannot help but note that this always seemed to be the case, she never appeared ill out of his ease when she near him. for all the back and forth they've exchanged upon their meeting and the years following, she was always more of herself when he was around, than he'd ever seen elsewhere. the strange sensation that made itself known in kalore had him reeling for a moment.
kalore had never given much thought to this dance they shared, it was so inherit with him, that it was something he did without thinking. the moment they were near one another, it was instinct to engage, even when they were not alone and surrounding by their other circle members. not one of them quite understood their bantering, hell, some perhaps assumed that siara despised him, and he often then not, simply went out of his way to annoy her. which he did some times, but other times it simply happened without him making a conscious effort. since his family perished, he had spent his free time not tied up as inner circle duties, searching high and low for kalyx. he was not any closer, and a part of him knowing he had to accept his brother was not here anymore. kalore had not allowed anyone close to him, only giving timur the illusion that they were close friends. he had his own ambitions that propelled him, kept him focused, he had given his life to the night court, and that would not change. yet, as he looked to siara, he was reminded why he had chosen to keep his distance from everyone of his commrades. they were loyal to their high lord, and if they knew what sort of man kalore was, they would not want him anywhere near him, and shadowsinger included. that left another inexplicable ache that he couldn't understand rightly. siara would not be standing here, indulging him, laughing and smiling with him, which were things she hardly ever did around him. there were rare moments like these where he forget where he came from, who he was and it was not the man she thinks she knew. he had not a clue what they were doing now, but whatever it was, he didn't wish to put an end to it, any more than he wanted to be elsewhere. it was obvious that he would not leaving her side tonight, and that was a dangerous thought and a want in itself.
the longer she continued to smile at him, and dare he say, flirt? what else could he use to describe what they were doing tonight? why the shift in her demeanor made him wish to continue and see what else she would offer. now, whether it was because tonight they shared a common ground and it was only temporary, kalore intended to find out. his dark gaze remained on her, since she did not say a word at his studying of her, he did not cease watching her. her endearments echoed in his minds, thoughts he didn't wish to entertain, but nevertheless lingered in his mind. something kept him there, and showed no signs of wavering. perhaps that he simply took advantage of her demeanor towards him tonight, standing so near him, a hand reaching to him and resting on his person, that was unheard from her. the most peculiar thing was she did not avert her gaze, her dark ones remained on him. "i would argue otherwise, siara." his voice low, as he tilted his head, "you claim to be entirely in your senses and dropping such sweet sentiments my way. what else am to attribute this change of heart towards me? as for suitors, i assure i'm not in the market for one, but your continued presence near me says my confidence and charms have you...curious." he didn't know for certain, she was as skilled in keeping her thoughts from him and he did not will himself into her mind, but there was another look in her gaze that made him certain he was right. perhaps, more than curious. "you can admit it, you enjoy being around me. even you are not entirely immune to my charms." there was a wolfish smile curving his lips, hues glinting as he kept them on her. he didn't know why he really wished to hear her say the words. "i do not desire them from just anyone, dear siara." he told her frankly, hearing the compliment to follow, in her own signature way without saying too much. "much obliged, was that so difficult?" there was another look that flickered in his gaze, "i, too, much prefer myself in the color of your shadows, as well." he murmured.
he wasn't certain where from within those words were uttered to her, and she didn't question them, but it was the look in her gaze that passed that made him pause and linger on her. yet again, that prickly sense of awareness that made itself known as they stood there and silence fell for moments. when she attempted to mask her near growl with a cough, a hand curled on her upper arm gently, but he did not read her mind, keeping his focus off her thoughts and on her lovely features, "it's adorable you think i don't know when you're hiding your responses from me." he whispered right near her cheek, "when will you cease doing that? " he dropped his hand as quickly, lest he did displease her wit that gesture. fates, what had gotten into him? truly the night was finally messing with his mind. "keeping tossing endearments my way, you are only proving my point, my darling shadowsinger. they have quite the effect on me." the words holding his usual note of arrogance, and some amusement. "but I am quite pleased to hear you believe my reputation is steadfast." a brow rises then of genuine curiosity, "are you searching for one?" now that would be news, and he's not sure how he felt about that. "you know that is the first you've admitted how fearful I can be. careful, with all this sweet talking, i might believe you are attempting to steal my heart, little spy" the remark itself was loaded, but he did not linger further on the thought, but it seemed siara was not ceasing her efforts to surprise him, perhaps in the most pleasurable ways it was possible. this time he held her gaze, daring her to look away, "is that so? perhaps one of these days i might need to put you to the test..." he did not tack on that he did not object to the thought of being handled by her. "I sense you'll take great pleasure in that."

not once had their been a problem the commander of the night court could not solve with his wits alone. he did not rely on his powers too greatly, and it was not as if his abilities to wield storms or manipulate nightmares would come in hand in most situations, it was more of a defense mechanism than anything else. while he took pride in his abilities as a daemati, he also prided in his abilities to read others simply by observing them. still, it did not mean he was not ticked at having his powers drained, and one entirely gone. "the question is : is this permanent? if so, what does this mean for all of prythian?" mother had not stepped in nor made her presence known, which in itself was worrisome. kerim didn't have the answers, no one did, and kalore himself not having a clue left frustrated in ways nothing ever had. his oldest friend knew it took far greater things to unsettle his mind, he had been taught from a young age to never compromise one's steady state of mind. it was due to this he had built the patience he has and it also for that reason he had gotten this far and he swore this thing threaten to undo all that the commander had accomplished. he was aware he wasn't the only one feeling out of sorts, the war lord was more or less in a similar state. kalore was certain it was siara's presence alone was the one thing that kept him sane here. spending his time between her and the warlord kept him in a better mood. his lips twitched slightly, "it's a bit more than that, but yes." he wanted his shadowsinger all hours of the day, but even if they could not do much other than speak, merely being in her presence did wonders. lately, she had taken to remaining in her room when she wasn't out doing her duties as spymaster."you should go say hello to her, i believe she might take a liking to you." he was certain kerim knew who it was kalore was involved with. "have you? did you manage to chase the commander of the capital down after all?" kerim had been entirely indecisive on whether or not he should persue nyx, he had been curious to see of his friend had given into his urge. as his onyx gaze studied the other male, there was certainly something different about him and he'd wager he knew what it was. "I am surprised you didn't, despite not knowing we'd be in this predicament, as a warlord I was certain you'd bring a few of them along." it wasn't a slight at his friend, more than it was genuine surprise, but it couldn't be denied it would have given them all a bit of an advantage. "our scholars have exhausted every effort, in the time we've been here they've search through everything. i'm also certain gaea's scholars couldn't find anything of use otherwise they would have spoken by now." it made his suspicions correct, they hadn't found anything either, so the records the royals kept hidden were entirely useless.
kerim chuckles, knowing full well should kalore have found a way out, he would have at least shared it with the war lord. " i'm certain you've managed to exhaust every option available to you at least once. " more like at least twice, but he chose not to poke too hard at his friend. the war lord knew without a doubt that the other would not be in the highest of spirits, despite his full knowledge that the other had managed to tangle himself up with another. their confinement and now lack of power certainly were a recipe for ruin. even the illyrian was worse for wear, but he too tried to keep it in check. he knew that their entrapment was not the fault of anyone he chose to interact with, and thus, refused to take it out on them. besides, he was trying to make the best of it, spending time with nyx as if he had a right to her presence. " personal matters ? good, you need a way to let off steam. " he slightly teases, but in truth, he's happy for his friend. whatever transpires between the pair isn't truly his business, but so long as kalore is enjoying his time with the other, kerim is happy. " the lack of knowing makes it difficult to prepare. i wish i had brought some from my camp as well. " he had no warriors here, was not the general and instead fell under the other. it made his time here all the more annoying, only the slightest ray of moonlight easing it.

siara had not yet decided to name the things the commander pulled out of her other than lust, occasionally admitting to need. the spymaster wasn't afraid of much, but she felt that labeling things in the infancy of whatever they were doing would just put a rush on something she was enjoying. it seemed kalore was perfectly content in that regard, and it was hardly as if they were seeing other people. it seemed an unspoken sort of rule, as if they both knew the moment they kissed that it meant they were not entertaining anyone else. siara may not have asked, but she was a spy, after all. kalore was difficult to keep track of, she left him to his own privacy more often than not, but she felt she would know if he were dallying with multiple others. teasing him throughout the night was an attempt to stay present on her mind, as if she needed to do anything for that. it was as much for her as it was for him. everything between them always a game.
the dangerous part of their relationship was their duty to the night court. neither should think of the other first, but rather to their high family and the people of the court. siara knew it was foolish, she didn't care for many, but she couldn't find herself feeling guilty that the first person in her mind was the commander. perhaps it was due to her knowledge that their high lord and his siblings were fine, they were surrounded by guards at most moments, or were wholly capable on their own. rarely did the spymaster show such selfishness this outwardly, but the moment kalore's arm wound around her she was far more relieved than she'd been since the gala began. initially, she worried that he would pull away, or whisk them into a corner. when he remained in the open, holding onto her tighter, she finally responded and placed one hand on his chest. the other slipped up to his shoulder, but she allowed her thumb to brush against the exposed skin on his neck. siara doubted it, but she'd been tempting him with physical touch as of late to see if he would slip into her mind. " i already know the answer, dear commander. you're greatly stubborn. " she teases with a small smile. the reactions he had over her attire had been far too fun as of late, growing more so after the development in their relationship. ' you would grow bored of me should i stop playing our game. " she tosses back confidently. a small laugh slips from her, " you know better than that, kal. feel free to find the answer if you so desire. " because she trusted him, far more than she should. siara refused to allow herself to worry about that.
𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍 than used to seeing the women in his court. however, he was one of the few who did not leer at them as the other men might have. with siara, it had been gradual interest that slowly had him turning in her direction, while he had not been blind to her in the slightest, his gaze remained on her pretty face more often than not. it was one thing to watch her walk about in those dresses when he could not utter a word to her. when he had kept his distance and never allowed her even an inkling of his interest in her, it had been torturous back then as well, but somehow more so now. the commander was well aware why this was the case, when she was right within arms reach, when he did not have to refrain from admiring her as he did. his little shadowsinger knew exactly what she was doing, craftily slipping out into the ball without allowing him to see her in her dress, and then tormenting him amongst the crowds by walking past him, and in his rare moments of weakness, he responded unwisely, perhaps.
he should have been more careful, even now as he reached for siara, just as her shadows unfurl around him, a single one curling around his wrist to reach him. he found that he did not care who saw them, it was not as if he was doing anything wrong per se, and no one dared interfered in his personal affairs, no one possessed such a nerve. his priority should have been locating his high lord, but his logical mind knew timur did not his protection, he was a high lord. but this...is what he feared. his mind worrying of another, not when he had much to accomplish, but most of it occupied by his spymaster, and still he found no regrets. the nearly splintering fear of losing someone, this is why the daemati had despised attachments, avoided them all his existence when he lost his family, in an instant that had changed once more. the fear siara could instill within still unsettled him. for a man who once claim he had nothing to lose, suddenly found himself fearing losing much more, and she quickly became at the very forefront of it. "i have, and my words previous statement still remains. the question you should be asking, little shadowsinger, is how i refrained myself all these years watching you strut around in them." it was always a thought of finding a way to have her cover up, or refraining from reaching for her. some days it was perhaps the most challenging thing he faced when he was working with her, was forced to be in proximity with her. the hand that slipped around her frame tightened by a fraction, his coal gaze holding hers even as her devil smile drew the most carnal responses from him. "you have not yet learned not to play with fire." his voice low, "no matter, you will in due time." the relief that settled within him seeing her unharmed, he knew, he sensed her unease until she was able to see him in equal condition. "or perhaps the attentions of your commander are not enough? is there a complain here your wish to express in this manner?" a brow rises.

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐄 outside of kerim would truly catch the commander's unusually improved moods. the other knew how little care he had for such parties, outside of night court festivities. tonight, kalore had not minded this tedious evening, because it had not felt as such due to a certain shadowsinger. it appeared the roles were reserved tonight between them, the war lord was entirely out of sorts tonight which naturally left kal curious. "plenty are also well adept at making a show of it. tonight, it might be because after days of being trapped, this party is a bit of an escape. albeit, a temporary one, but i'm not surprised to see most forgo their usual moods for tonight." it certainly would not make things worse, but as the commander's gaze remained on the war lord, it was quite obvious his moods perhaps had little to do with the ball, than something else. when the a name he's not heard the other utter is years comes to pass his suspicions prove to be correct. kalore could easily just a place hand on the other and do a quick read in the other's mind, but of the friendship he genuinely honored, he'd never allowed himself to do so with kerim. "made her place beside the royals, has she." he had seen her, it was only a matter of time before kerim did too. kalore would not deny he'd learned of the illyrian who had her wings taken, right by the hands of her own father. the war lord had been like him in his discipline, forgoing what they wanted most in the name of duty. kalore had broken that rule for siara, while he couldn't not tell kerim what to do, seeing as affairs of the heart were a new territory for the commander as well. as a friend this was a sight kal did not like on the other. "you cannot avoid her forever. judging by the look on your face you've crossed paths with her. if her presence affects you as such even now, maybe it's time to reconsider your previous objections."
“ please do not. ” he states, nearly groaning at the thought. kerim was tired, a slight different version of the war lord most commonly found when he visited velaris. he blamed the second in command for the royals. “ i think plenty of people seem to be. ” he says, shrugging a it. it seemed more people were laughing and dancing rather than scowling in a corner like the illyrian was. “ it’s only in attempt to not have us all complaining about our circumstances. ” states he with a scoff, crossing his arms as his gaze remains on the crowds before them. a heavy sigh falls from kerim’s lips at kalore’s question, and he glances around before offering in the lowest possible voice. “ nyx is here. ” he didn’t speak much on the woman, but kalore would know that it was the one person kerim had wanted and refused himself, and if he’d found out her tragedy, that was on him. kerim didn’t put it past the commander.

𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒, alina had no qualms of dismissing others when she wished for time alone. in this case, it appeared she had intruded onto the night court spymaster's alone time. perhaps she could have moved elsewhere, knowing the other would not ask a high lady to leave the space, still she remains put. the shadowsinger's company was not unwanted, after a rather pleasant exchange between the two but enough for the high lady of summer to surmise siara was a rather insightful woman. catching a brief glimpse in the other's dark hues as they turned to the high lady of summer, and like alina, the other appeared to be far deep in her thoughts, wishing to be away from the hum drum of the palace. though that had lessened considerably since recent events. alina did not believe she'd find the answers she was seeking anywhere on this land, but a stroll would keep her mind as steady as it always. it was more unsettling that it was not so much their ordeal that left it ticking, it was due to a certain high lord that, much to her dismay, refused to leave her mind. "precisely, how you describe yours, and a bit restless, too, wishing to return to home. worrying what might be occurring in our court without their high lady." alina had left her most capable high faes in charge, but it had been days since they could last communicate with her. "we're we searching for something in particular here?" gesturing around them as the two ended up in a location that not many in the palace ventured to. "i was so certain no one quite knew of this secluded path."
siara didn’t often allow people to witness her softer sides, but teh garden called and she couldn’t help but take the stroll. mother help her if any of the other inner circle members happened upon her now, much less kalore. she had quite a lot on her mind when it came to the commander, the garden helped push it away for now. siara knew well that the thoughts would not remain at bay, much less when they crossed paths today inevitably. for now, she could remain foolish, ignorant, and somewhat blissful. there were depths to the half illyrian that she let out on the occasion. spotting the high lady wasn’t bothersome, even if her peace now had company, but it had been rather unexpected. perhaps they were both here searching for something they knew would not be found amongst the flora and fauna. “ as well as can be. how are those in summer ? ” she asks politely.

"I sense you'll take great pleasure in that."
for a few moments, siara considered letting her wings out for this event. let people gawk at the half illyrian with her slightly pointed wings and her dark wings. if she could not dawn black attire, she could show off her wings. but they were cumbersome, annoying to allow in crowded spaces, and stars she would never hear the end of it if they knocked into something or someone touched them. the spymaster was very protective of her wings, even hardly letting them out around velaris unless she were alone. she was certain that most in the inner circle may have only seen them on a rare occasion, less than a handful of times, if at all. while she was comfortable in their home beneath the stars, the woman still had her secrets. in this place, she had no such comforts, and as such, her wings remained hidden by glamour, itching for flight. perhaps when all this ended, she might fly back rather than travel through her shadows or winnow.
an ending she could not wait to reach, past her point of control in some regards and desiring freedom. she did not enjoy playing this game of politics and niceties, of seeing other high family members and needing to act as if she were beneath them. timur never made her feel such a way, it was why the man deserved her loyalty and why she behaved while in the capital. lest rumors spread of the half high fae illyrian bastard causing issues. no, siara was far more behaved than that, even if most did not expect it of her. she was beyond pleased that none had gone against the dress code, for otherwise the spymaster would have returned to her rooms and changed. the most shocking point was seeing kalore in a stark opposition to his normal shades. it was a striking look on the commander, one she refused to admit aloud lest he never let it go. siara gave him little bits every so often, eager to see the reaction, but a full complement would not be what he got. the game they played was one of the few that kept her sane here, and one that she enjoyed far more than even she was ready to admit. their banter was the highlight of this dreaded night thus far, again, not something she would be sharing with the man before her.
siara often wondered what went on in the commander’s mind, she was not graced with his skill of probing through one’s head, but other times he was easier to read than a book. this was one of those grey areas, she could imagine plenty going on within that head, but not every part of it. the man was skilled at holding most things back, she’d only understood him this well after years of working together. once an enigma, now he was disturbingly easy to understand in some ways for they thought the same. it was quite strange when the pair of them came from such different backgrounds. she knew little of kalore’s life prior to their meeting, but he certainly had not grown up alongside her in an illyrian war camp. still, their gazes would lock, and eyes would share far more than words. just as now, she could see his surprise and the intent look he offered after, and it only made her shine at earning the reaction she had. siara gazed up at him with this triumph in her eyes, making her motives quite clear. “ i assure you that i have not had enough of anything to influence my behavior. “ she nearly admitted that she did it to keep him on his toes, but siara often left things unsaid between the pair of them under the assumption that he’d understand. or that it would confuse him, which was equally as pleasing. the grin he returned nearly made her laugh, but then a glare is quick to overtake her expression and a growl threatens to slip from her lips. “ such confidence does the opposite of attract suitors, you know. ” she throws back, as he seemed to think that she desired such attentions. did he ? the glare is replaced. whiplashes of reactions they offered one another that might confuse onlookers. “ perhaps if you did not desire such compliments, you would receive one. ” counters she, but siara decides to throw the man a bone, placing a hand upon the commander’s jacket lapel. “ you look surprisingly well in white, kalore, but i much prefer you in the color of my shadows. ”
the statement gave away nothing, but siara’s mind began spinning in an instant. “ i’m glad to hear it. ” she says instead of questioning, assuming the man wasn’t going to answer either. something sparked in her gaze, though, something she wasn’t too sure where it came from just yet. at the pet name, her growl does slip, and siara quickly coughs it away. stars damned illyrian traits. she hated it. but rather than show how annoyed she was he garnered that reaction from her, siara kept her gaze leveled up to the man. “ i am certain that your reputation is never in question, darling. ” she tosses back the word he used, hoping to annoy him as he’d brought out an annoying reaction in her. a hum sounds from the spymaster, thoughtful, but not concerned. “ one that has yet to make themselves known. ” which wasn’t unfortunate if you asked her. siara always knew she would not find love easily, no real model of it as a child nor understanding of it now. she felt affection and love for those in her life, but to give her heart away ? it was not something she thought lightly of, if at all. a laugh slips from her again, and siara realizes she has yet to drop her hand from the man’s chest and chooses to leave it. “ as it should. ” such was the reaction she desired in others. it pleased the spymaster to know that many thought she was a perfect image of the court of nightmares they all believed her to live in. siara tilts her head a bit as kal leans down, her own voice lowering in response as if words were for none other. they were not, but they were also not at the level of secrecy that the two discussed otherwise. “ someone must take upon the task, you scare everyone else away too easily. ” counties she. “ we both know i’m quite capable of handling you in ways none other could. ” cocky, but she’d always had that trait.

𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘 , kalore couldn’t quite explain what these foreign sensations siara evoked within him. he was an intelligent man, and certainly believed he was one of the very few in his realm to be exceptionally gifted when it came to agility of the minds. this is not due to his daemati abilities only, it was simply that he had the uncanny ability to observe, to take from his surroundings, utilize what he could around him to his advantage. his mind simply never ceased ticking and turning, and it was what made the commander of the night court such a dangerous predator. all his life he had worked for one thing, devoted his existence to his night court, through whatever means necessary, made himself the most trusted man to the high lord of night, built himself a careful reputation of a feared commander of the night court. the other half of his existence, searching high and low for his younger brother, a thought he couldn't give up on, and both of these reasons did not allow for any sort of distractions and temptations the shadowsinger offered. how could he? he could not give himself fully to anyone, could not reveal the depths of his pitch black soul as too much rested on the line. for all that siara might find appealing about the commander, even he was not naive enough to believe she'd ever look at him the same way if she knew the depths of his mind.
kalore felt the draw between them, had felt it for so long he had to fight most days not give into it, to not reach for her even when his being ached to do so. truly, it was not a sensation he'd ever known before, never had felt this sort of longing for anyone all his existence. he yet could not put into words what this was, only knew that her shadows drew him in because although he did not have her skills, his mind remained in the darkness. every fiber of his being was dipped into the shadows, and never revealing himself to anyone. yet kalore felt himself still reveal those bits on impulsive on the night of coronation, careful still, but without intending to, he had allowed her into just the bits of it. revealing to the spymaster what he thought of her, and he was certain she had seen his attraction to her, his flirting had left no room doubt as to whatever this was between them. to kal, it had come as genuine surprise that she flirted with him, leaned into him as he did to her, he truly hadn't even known until that night she had thought of him in that manner. there was no mistaking the interest in her dark gaze, he'd seen it even if she had been careful not to reveal too much. "do so, carefully." there was a chance it could work, but he was also sure the royals had taken every precaution. his mind easily wandered away from their predicament, and focused onto her, trying to fight the urge to pull her closer, to forget, momentarily what was happening around them.
kalore had been distracted since their dance at the ball, even now as he stood too close to her, watching her, unable to tear his gaze away from her. he wished, to his utter horror, to go back to that night so he could on flirting with her as he wished, and find out what she would have allowed him, had they continued that path. even now he was at war within himself, to do what he wished and close that distance between them, or to do the sensible as he had before that nigh,t and put her away from his mind for good. but how could he after all that this? kal internally groaned at how he spoke to her, it was not a slight at her, but his concern taking over entirely uncalled for. his gaze remained lock on her, intense, hard, even as his hand, a stark contrast to his features soft against her skin. he did not drop her hand, he didn't want to, he could not. nor could he fight this pull that drew him to her, her words certainly made his jaw lock as he saw the fire alight in her gaze. what was he to her? what did she wish for him to be? only her commander and the others? siara was not wrong, the commander did not behave this way to his subordinates, not that he considered her that, she was his equal in her way, but his feet did not move. his hand tightened, just ever so gently, around her arm, careful not to hurt her. his grip firm but gentle all the same, something no one would think him capable of. "do you want for me to step back, siara?" his voice low, though it was not intentional. kal was sure his gaze darkened more so if is was possible. "its not as if you ever have treated me as your commander." he drawled, though his words held no heat, but an intensity of a different kind. "you seem to enjoy treating me as anything but, and I would wager you knew you could get away with it and you enjoyed that, too."
he was taken aback once more when she question if he was worried for her...for what else would he demand her not to be so reckless. siara was more than capable, she was a warrior of a different breed, she commended respect without asking for it, he had always regarded her as his equal and he said that about very few people. kalore looked down on most, but that was not possible with this infuriating woman. her anger continued to rise, but when she all but challenged him with gaze alone and her words a moment later, to read her mind, he was tempted but he intended to keep his earlier promise. he would not, he would hear it all from her now or later. stars, he could not understand this bizarre fixation on her, but it was obvious that answer would not come to him anytime soon. "you tell me, my little spy." his fingers trailing along her arm, "as if you would let me doubt you, i thought the years of us working along would tell you exactly what i think of your capabilities. since when have my opinions of you, matter to you, hmm?" without realizing it, he stepped closer, eliminating more of that distance, and he was sure he had lost his mind entirely now, and he blamed her entirely. perhaps he had deliberately invaded her space, "i will not read your mind, siara, i've not thus far nor will I. that's something you will grant to me in time." he said with enough confidence even if he was playing with fire, his gaze didn't wave from her, fates she was a sight he could not grow tired of, ever, and now he longed to see her wings spread, but lately she had kept them hidden. he sees her thumb fiddle with her ring, "let them unfold." the commander murmurs, a hand cupping her chin as his brought his face leveled to hers, his lips a hairs breath away, even as his insides urged him to move before he did something he should not be doing."do you believe i would ever underestimate you?"
did she desire to climb into kalore’s mind and pick apart everything inside of it ? perhaps. when siara had first come to the night court, kalore had not scared her then. his intimidation tactics left much to be desired when it came to all she’d endured in the illyrian camps, never topping what her father demanded of her and his looming presence. but she never expected to find them here… wherever here was. what did kalore think of all this, she couldn’t help but wonder. what had he thought of her when they first met ? too many questions, and it was unfair that his ability would allow such answers and hers would not. siara liked to flaunt her shadows, but his ability was so unseen and dangerous that she couldn’t help but be jealous. when had she begun to see him as more than her commander ? when had he become someone she thought would even reciprocate her flirting ? not even to mention her surprise that he actually had. what they’d begun at the ball felt impending, unstoppable despite her actual fear that it could ruin them both. the way kalore was acting now… it seemed he would rather not find out at all. siara didn’t feel rejected, she refused to let him hurt her feelings in such a way. the ice heart in her chest was wrapped in shadows, even grey couldn’t break it yet.
and now he stood in her room, inches from her as if the space was his to own. his commanding presence was never quite something she could miss, even if she refused to give him that satisfaction. the spymaster picked apart as much as she could, even if grey had often been difficult to read. she knew what buttons to press to rile him up, but now he offered near nothing. curious, had he walled himself up because he regretted their conversation ? siara wasn’t naive enough to think this meant he wanted nothing to do with her, not when his body language offered otherwise. “ i’m certain her secrets are under lock and key.. i could see if those locks can prevent shadows from seeping through. ” she mused, the idea forming slowly. siara had reacquainted herself with the capital enough to get around, it was possible she could find closer and closer the commander found himself to the spymaster, so close she could probably feel his breath if she leaned in ever so slightly. siara couldn’t help it, she could feel the pull yanking them together as if there was no other choice.
her lips part to question what he’s doing, why he’s decided to step inside of her personal space as if it belongs to him, yet act as if it was nothing. but then kalore’s body language changes, and siara too freezes as she waits to see his reaction. as the words flow, she can’t help but wish to step back, but refuse. that tone.. stars it ignites something inside of her that lights a fire within her own dark eyes. “ of course, commander. though perhaps take a step back as if you truly are only that to me if you wish to continue speaking in such a way. ” come her words, but then his fingers brush her skin and siara nearly shutters, why did he have that power over her ? siara wished to banish it, but she could no more do that than she could yank her arm away from him. she should pull away, his abilities could be worming through her mind right now, but for some reason the spymaster wished to see if he even would. his next words spark even more inside of her, and siara can’t help herself once more. her gaze remains locked with his, fire meeting the darkness inside of his own, the distance between them too minimal to ignore even if they both keep trying. “ are you worried for me, commander ? do you doubt my abilities ? perhaps you ought to use that touch of yours to see that i’m perfectly capable of handling myself. ” to prove her point, siara’s thumb twitches, spinning the ring that held the glamor attached to her wings. most people underestimated her, for some reason kalore doing that infuriated her more than anything else and her wings reappearing only further proved her point. she was an illyrian warrior long before she became a spymaster.

"it was not for the lack of trying, i assure you." truly, it had not, he had tried every possible way, checking every crevice and corner. he had been in a tenser mood since his gifts were taken, not they were providing much seeing as he knew without a doubt every soul under the palace did not have answers to this entity. nor had they uncovered why their magic was draining so alarmingly. when kalore wasn't off doing his duties, he was with his shadowsinger, she was as on edge as him but their company of one another seemed to ease their worries for some time before they had to step out of their cocoon. it was not as the daemati could not control his moods, there was perhaps only two people he'd allow him see out of sorts, one of them was with him, and the other, siara, he tried not to simply because he didn't want to worry her. losing her shadows had not helped her much either. having his abilities stripped away in this manner and had certainly left a part of kalore almost missing. the commander knew his friend had come to check upon him, which he did appreciate. "i've also been tied up with....personal matters." it was not a lie, siara was entirely a personal matter, a joy he'd not allowed himself, ever before. kal was certain the war lord had been busy himself, his duty aside, perhaps chasing down the one who got away. "if we knew what this thing was, we'd find a way to put it down for good."

“ with how scarce you’ve been, i feared you found some secret way out. ” kerim greets his best friend. they’d both been busy, reasonably so with the loss of powers and fear circulating the capital. kerim was worried for the other, knowing it must be difficult to have a larger loss than most. the daemati was surely grumpy at the turn of events, and as a friend it was his duty to check on the other. that, and he wished to confirm who was keeping the commander so busy.
