What if the love story in folklore is either Taylor spending time with Matty in a Joe intermission, or Joe doing something similar.
It adds meaning to the “he wasn’t a fool” convo from long pond between Jack and Taylor. If Jack is saying Taylor wasn’t a fool to spend time with him at a point when things were over. It also links with Taylor’s songs with MH being about being children.
Though there might also be something to Betty’s “show up at my party”, and “crashed my party in your rental car”.
Teenage love triangle needs revisiting!
so taylor says "my husband is cheating" and "We learned thе right steps to different dancеs, And fell victim to interlopers' glances" on the album about joe so I definitely think our long-running suspicion that joe cheated on taylor is confirmed but I think taylor also owns up to her OWN missteps and I think the folklore love triangle is a comment on all of that, not JUST taylor's affair with matty.
i don't think you can just one for one fill in the characters of the love triangle with three concrete people (like for example I've seen people say betty is taylor, halsey is august, james is matty or something like that)
i think they're all vibey songs- cardigan is taylor's perspective of what it's like to have someone from your past come back to you and make you feel better. i do think this song, in general, according to taylor, is about matty showing back up while joe was letting her down if we're going to believe what she said on eras tour (this is about you, you know who you are, I love you).
but i do think betty is taylor and joe talking to each other, both apologizing for cheating.
and i think august is ALSO taylor's perspective perhaps talking about how she felt about being the other woman to matty's partner (fka twigs?) but also I think she may have been trying to take into consideration the feelings of whoever joe cheated on her with.
remember, taylor's team confirmed that taylor and joe were on and off for a long time and had broken up before the big confirmed break up in April of 2023 and I've of course had tea confirming they broke up many times as well. i think one of these iterations was over quarantine (I have heard they got couples counseling in 2020). hence them writing songs like betty, exile, ch probs, and coney island together! and of course, taylor writing songs like illicit affairs and ivy along with the love triangle songs (and also tolerate it and happiness IMO were just about struggles with joe).
i think one of these breakups had to do with matty and also perhaps infidelity on joe's part but they worked it out and wrote songs together to cope and taylor wrote a bunch of songs about infidelity to process and understand it all.
the way the house in ivy burns down at the end and then taylor lights the lover house on fire and burns it down on eras tour to me is just chef's kiss. and it just ALL comes together on ttpd don't get me started on matty's matches in loml ("your arson's match your somber eyes") and all the other connections to folkmore/the love triangle.
i think most of folkmore is about these affairs and the failures of taylor and joe's relationship (while still trying to come back together and heal it with songs like evermore and willow and long story short). you can't really blame her for hiding it all in a fictional setting given how the public would have commented on the drama esp if she and joe were trying to work it out!
i comment a lot on all of this in my Learning the Lore of TTPD series part I is here on spotify and here on apple podcasts!

Rook Hunt x Male!Reader
A lover of all things beautiful, Rook Hunt wouldn’t dream of shying away from the chance to watch you practice your newest figure-skating routine, sans invite, of course.
CW: brief mention of past character death
Word Count: 1171
A/N: This drabble is brought to you by the yearly reawakening of my Yuri On Ice obsession
(Still patiently waiting for Ice Adolescence cuz I'm delulu)
➽────────────────────────────❥
The spinning of the empty arena around you halted as your skates made contact with the ice again, gliding forward on its smooth, frozen surface as you prepared yourself for your next jump. You could clearly see your breath in front of you, panting in the frigid air, as you realized that you were a bit more out of practice than you had previously thought.
An avid figure skater in your old world, though perhaps nothing overly extraordinary, you were no Olympian, it had been several months past your arrival at NRC when you had finally learned that Sage Island had a small ice skating rink of its own. Skating around one of the school’s frozen ponds with your classmates on a rather nice day set in the deepest part of Winter you had mentioned in passing to the other freshmen that back in your world you had several years of experience on the ice, and had lamented the loss of your ability to continue with your regularly scheduled practice routine. (Though surely your body was grateful for the temporary hiatus.) Cue Epel dragging you down to the city center the following day, right up to the doors of the Sage Island Ice Rink.
It didn’t take you very long to become familiar with the owner of the rink, a kindly older woman who had been quite the figure skater herself in her youth, trophies and plaques displayed next to black and white photographs behind the skate rental counter, and who eventually gave you permission to come by the rink after closing whenever your homework load let up enough that you had the spare time to re-immerse yourself in your sport.
And so here you were, just you, the ice, your music playlist, and a lurking Rook Hunt who was not even trying to hide the fact that he was watching you skate. Drifting backwards past the section where he was seated, a prime spot right in the front, you raised your eyebrows slightly at him in curiosity, receiving his signature cheery smile in return. Shaking your head teasingly, you turned your attention back to the set you were currently working on.
You had been attempting to choreograph this one back home, to one of your favorite pieces of music, a lively piano and violin piece that you no longer had access to here in a whole different world. Back then, you had been struggling with just how to fit together the last few pieces of your performance, somehow every time failing to compose it in a way that felt just right. Yet right here you were twirling through the air and sliding across the ice in a perfectly seamless transition from one step to another, to a whole new musical composition, one you could have never heard until landing yourself in Twisted Wonderland. As if it were some strange destiny that you bring your artistic vision to fruition only after having woken up in this peculiar, dangerous, beautiful land.
Ever so graceful off of the ice, the last thing that you could remember before falling out of that magical coffin and into Night Raven College’s first year ceremony was tripping over your own feet in the arena locker room after a competition, the world abruptly going black as your head made harsh contact with the very edge of the changing room bench. You would never admit this aloud to anyone though. You knew that Ace would never let you live it down if he got word that you went out in such a way.
As the music slowly came to a finish, you found yourself sliding to a gentle stop at the edge of the arena, your skates stilling right in front of where your upperclassman was perched, no longer in his seat but instead leaning over the wall, chin resting in his hand, his intense emerald gaze fixed upon your figure.
“What a simply marvelous performance, Prince de la Glace.” Rook exclaimed, as you braced your hands on your knees, letting your upper body droop as you caught your breath after such intense exercise. “Such passion in your performance! C’est trop bien! Your confidence upon the ice has re-emerged like a bright spring flower blossoming through fallen snow.”
Anybody else wouldn’t have been able to tell if you were flushed from embarrassment, or from the stinging chill of the ice rink, but you were certain that Rook knew, with those uncanny green eyes that seemed to stare right past the surface every time the two of you happened to make eye contact. (Which happened more frequently than you cared to admit.) You supposed it could be unnerving, everyone else seemed to be in agreement that the Pomefiore vice housewarden was peculiar, to say the least. Most tried to avoid him. However, you were doubtful that there was ever a quarry that could elude the evasive hunter. You must have been a bit odd yourself, not minding that you had caught his attention.
“You only ever visit the rink to watch me skate,” you remarked, standing yourself upright again, and meeting the hunter’s sharp eyes. “Maybe you’d like to try it out for yourself for once?”
You gestured to the small expanse of ice behind you.
Fetching a pair of ice skates in Rook's size, the other student allowed you to tie his laces for him before you led him out onto the ice. Skating in a group with friends had always been enjoyable, but this was something quite different.
There was always something so much more intimate about sharing the ice with just one other person. There was also the excitement at the thought that you might get to watch the normally graceful hunter fall flat on his ass. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
You tried not to smile at the thought, prepared to aid your classmate should he end up sprawled on the ice. Yet it turned out that the self-proclaimed Chasseur D’Amour was more sure on his feet than you had previously anticipated, remaining perfectly poised and balanced only a few steps behind you, leaving you to wonder if this was truly his first time on the ice as he had led you to believe.
Instead, it was you, the veteran figure skater, who lost your balance first, a surprised gasp stealing the air from your lungs as your feet slipped out from under you, sending you tumbling backwards. In that split-second, you had prepared yourself for the jolting pain that usually came with such harsh contact with the frozen surface beneath you, however that moment never came to pass. Instead of the frozen ice of the rink, you felt a warm pair of well muscled arms wrap around you, your back bumping against Rook’s chest as he caught you.
“Quelle tragédie!” Rook exclaimed, his arms snug around your waist. “It would appear that you have fallen for me, my dear Prince de la Glace!”
This time there would be no blaming your reddened cheeks on the ice.

After washing your hands, you walked back outside to see the firepit was lit and some of the cowboys were sitting around eating. You saw Jake standing to the side and walked over to him.
He smiled when he saw you.
"How come you're not eating?" you asked.
"I was waiting for you," he replied, extending his hand towards the buffet table.
You took a plate and began loading it up with food. At the far end of the table, you spotted Griff with a large pot, most likely his renowned barbecue.
"Ms. Y/N," Griff greeted with a nod as you approached him. "It's wonderful to have you back."
You smiled appreciatively. "Thank you, Griff."
Griff turned to Jake. "Well, if it isn't Jake Seresin. How've you been? It's been, what, a few months?"
You glanced at Jake.
"Something like that, Griff," Jake responded with a grin.
The two of you made your way to an empty hay bale and settled in.
"A few months?" you ask.
"Yeah. I try to make it back when I can. It's good to get away from the base every now and then."
"I can imagine," you replied, taking a bite of your barbecue sandwich. You set it back down on the plate and glanced at Jake. "I do miss this kind of food from time to time."
Jake smiled. "I can see that."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You've got a little something on your lip right there," he pointed out, reaching over to gently wipe your mouth.
You couldn't help but smile at Jake's gesture, feeling a mixture of nostalgia and warmth. "Thanks."
He grinned. "No problem."
The conversation flowed easily after that, as you and Jake caught up on each other's lives, sharing stories and laughing together. It was strange, but in a good way, to feel this connection with him again after so long.
"It's been a long day," Jake finally said and you looked at him.
"Yeah. I guess it has." You stood up. "Let's get you home."
The two of you went and threw your garbage into the trash can, headed to your rental truck and got in. You started the truck and began driving.
"What are you doing tomorrow?" Jake asks.
You shrugged. "I'm not sure. Whatever needs to be done around here, I guess."
"You want to go for a ride?"
You looked at him. "Sure."
"It was really nice seeing you again."
"You too."
The drive back was filled with a comfortable silence, the occasional hum of the engine providing a soothing backdrop. As you pulled up to the house, Jake turned to you with a smile.
"Thanks for today, Y/N. It was really great."
You returned the smile. "You can thank my brother for that, but likewise."
Jake opened the door, stepped out of the truck and headed towards his parents house. Watching him go, you felt a sense of contentment wash over you. Today had been unexpected, but in the best possible way. You looked forward to whatever tomorrow might bring.
The next morning, you woke up, got dressed and headed to the kitchen where James sat at the island drinking coffee and reading a paper and Griff was cooking.
"I didn't think newspapers existed anymore," you said as you poured yourself a cup of coffee.
"I didn't think you and Jake Seresin would ever get back together, but here we are."
You met James's gaze. "We're not together. We've just been catching up."
"Uh huh," James responded, taking another sip of his coffee.
Just then, the door swung open, revealing Jake along with his sister Leslie.
"Oh my God! Y/N!" Leslie exclaimed, rushing towards you with excitement, and the two of you shared a tight embrace. You looked at Jake.
"Sorry. When she heard you were home, she insisted on driving me over."
Leslie parted from you and looked at you. "Exactly. Don't blame him."
"I won't," you responded.
"It is so good to see you. Why didn't you tell me you were coming home?"
You and Leslie had been best friends since elementary school, and she had been heartbroken when you moved to Alaska, but she understood.
Leslie glanced from you to Jake and then back to you.
"You know what, forget I asked that. I'll talk to you later. Bye James," she said before heading out the door.
"Here you go, Ms. Y/N," Griff said placing a basket on the kitchen island.
"Thank you, Griff."
"You want some breakfast since you just got up? I've got some eggs and bacon."
"Sure."
"Jake? What about you?"
"I'd love some. Thank you."
Griff prepared some plates for the two of you and set them down on the island. As he did, James folded his paper and stood up.
"I've got to go check on the guys. Could you check the north fence today?"
"Yeah."
"Thanks," he said and went out the door.
Griff wiped his hands on his apron. "I've got to go answer that call," he said, then swiftly left the kitchen.
You and Jake exchanged puzzled looks.
"Alrighty then," you said, starting to eat.
When you finished, you placed your dish in the dishwasher along with Jake's and grabbed the basket.
"You ready?"
"Yeah. Let's go get the horses saddled and ride out."
The two of you headed out the door and to the barn.

Florida neighbors band together to recover (AP) When ankle-deep floodwaters from Hurricane Helene bubbled up through the floors of their home, Kat Robinson-Malone and her husband sent a late-night text message to their neighbors two doors down: “Hey, we’re coming.” The couple waded through the flooded street to the elevated front porch of Chris and Kara Sundar, whose home was built on higher ground, and handed over their 8-year-old daughter and a gas-powered generator. The Sundars’ lime-green house in southern Tampa also became a refuge for Brooke and Adam Carstensen, whose house next door to Robinson-Malone also flooded. The three families met years earlier when their children became playmates, and the adults’ friendships deepened during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. So when Helene and Hurricane Milton struck Florida within two weeks of each other, the neighbors closed ranks as one big extended family, cooking meals together, taking turns watching children and cleaning out their damaged homes. “Everyone has, like, the chain saw or a tarp,” Robinson-Malone said Sunday. “But really the most important thing for us was the community we built. And that made all the difference for the hurricane rescue and the recovery. And now, hopefully, the restoration.”
Thousands march in Spain to demand affordable housing (Reuters) Thousands protested on Sunday in Madrid to demand more affordable housing amid rising anger from Spaniards who feel they are being priced out of the market. “Spaniards cannot live in their own cities. They are forcing us out of the cities,” said nurse Blanca Prieto, 33. Spain is struggling to balance promoting tourism, a key driver of its economy, and addressing citizens’ concerns over unaffordable high rents due to gentrification and landlords shifting to more lucrative tourist rentals. Residents of the Canary Islands and Malaga have also staged protests this year against the rise in tourist rentals. Seasonal hospitality workers struggle to find accommodation in these tourism hot spots, with many resorting to sleeping in caravans or even their cars.
Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Ports Target Shipping (NYT) Russia has stepped up its assaults on Black Sea port infrastructure and civilian shipping in recent days, in what Ukraine says is an attempt to disrupt its exports and damage its economy. The attacks are part of an intensifying campaign of strikes on the city of Odesa and the region along Ukraine’s southern coast. Since last Monday, Russia has carried out five attacks in the area, killing 14 civilians and injuring 28, the U.N.’s Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported on Friday, citing local authorities. The strikes on ships were mostly aimed at those flying flags of small countries unlikely to retaliate against Russia. Last Monday, a container ship under the flag of Palau was hit, Ukrainian official said. The day before that, a missile damaged a vessel under a Saint Kitts and Nevis flag, according to the regional military administration.
Pakistan’s internet slows to a crawl as blame falls on government (Washington Post) Mobile internet in Pakistan has been painfully slow for over two months. Now, technology experts and political activists are accusing the government of intentionally throttling the internet to suppress political protesters. Digital rights activists fear that Pakistani officials are installing new controls to more tightly monitor social media and to censor political content.
China’s ‘New Great Wall’ Casts a Shadow on Nepal (NYT) The Chinese fence traces a furrow in the Himalayas, its barbed wire and concrete ramparts separating Tibet from Nepal. Here, in one of the more isolated places on earth, China’s security cameras keep watch alongside armed sentries in guard towers. High on the Tibetan Plateau, the Chinese have carved a 600-feet-long message on a hillside: “Long live the Chinese Communist Party,” inscribed in characters that can be read from orbit. Just across the border, in Nepal’s Humla District, residents contend that along several points of this distant frontier, China is encroaching on Nepali territory. The Nepalis have other complaints, too. Chinese security forces are pressuring ethnic Tibetan Nepalis not to display images of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, in Nepali villages near the border, they say. “This is the new Great Wall of China,” said Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, the former provincial chief minister of the area. China’s fencing along the edge of Nepal’s Humla District is just one segment of a fortification network thousands of miles long that Xi Jinping’s government has built to reinforce remote reaches, control rebellious populations and, in some cases, push into territory that other nations consider their own.
Sri Lanka closes schools as floods hammer the capital (AP) Sri Lanka closed schools in the capital Colombo and suburbs on Monday as heavy rains triggered floods in many parts of the island nation. Heavy downpours over the weekend have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, flooding homes, fields and roads. Three people drowned, while some 134,000 people have been affected by flooding, according to the country’s Disaster Management Centre. Sri Lanka has been grappling with severe weather conditions since May, mostly caused by heavy monsoon rains. In June, 16 people died due to floods and mudslides.
Can the Government Get People to Have More Babies? (NYT) In 1989, Japan seemed to be an unstoppable economic superpower. Its companies were overtaking competitors and gobbling up American icons like Rockefeller Center. But inside the country, the government had identified a looming, slow-motion crisis: The fertility rate had fallen to a record low. Policymakers called it the “1.57 shock,” citing the projected average number of children that women would have over their childbearing years. If births continued to decline, they warned, the consequences would be disastrous. Taxes would rise or social security coffers would shrink. Japanese children would lack sufficient peer interaction. Society would lose its vitality as the supply of young workers dwindled. It was time to act. Starting in the 1990s, Japan began rolling out policies and pronouncements designed to spur people to have more babies. The government required employers to offer child care leave of up to a year, opened more subsidized day care slots, exhorted men to do housework and take paternity leave, and called on companies to shorten work hours. In 1992, the government started paying direct cash allowances for having even one child (earlier, they had started with the third child), and bimonthly payments for all children were later introduced. None of this has worked. Last year, Japan’s fertility rate stood at 1.2. In Tokyo, the rate is now less than one. The number of babies born in Japan last year fell to the lowest level since the government started collecting statistics in 1899. Now the rest of the developed world is looking more and more like Japan.
The Brewing War With Israel Is Boosting Iran’s Young Hard-Liners (Foreign Affairs) The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s influential, ideological armed force, has been riven by divisions between its older, conservative commanders and its younger, radical ranks. The former generally favor exercising some restraint when it comes to Israel, whereas the latter want to go directly after the Islamic Republic’s nemesis. Typically, the older elite have held more influence with the supreme leader. But as more and more IRGC commanders and partners have been killed, the younger generations have gained the upper hand. They have done so by questioning the competence of their elders but also by suggesting that some IRGC elites are actually Israeli assets, including Esmail Ghaani, the IRGC commander who controls Iran’s Quds force—which, in turn, controls Iran’s network of proxy militias. After Israel killed Nasrallah, Khamenei’s calculus appears to have been shaped by this younger cohort. It is part of why Khamenei launched the October 1 attack.
Netanyahu Is Killing Us To Set Us Free? Logic, Grief And Resistance In Beirut (Daraj/Lebanon) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed us, the Lebanese people, and offered us a gift: a massacre. He sent soldiers to the Lebanese border town of Maroun al-Ras, raised an Israeli flag there, and sent the picture to the whole world. Netanyahu, who has so far killed more than 40,000 Palestinians and about 3,000 Lebanese, addressed us directly—and said that he is killing us for the sake of our future [by destroying Hezbollah]. Netanyahu tells us that he wants to give us after killing us, a homeland, one that is no more than a graveyard and no less than a colony. This speech he addressed to us is truly amazing, a summary of what awaits us if Netanyahu, owner of the “massacre doctrine,” achieves what he wants.
U.S. to Deploy Missile Defense System and About 100 Troops to Israel (NYT) The United States is sending an advanced missile defense system to Israel, along with about 100 American troops to operate it, the Pentagon announced on Sunday. The move will put American troops operating the ground-based interceptor, which is designed to defend against ballistic missiles, closer to the widening war in the Middle East. It comes after Iran launched about 200 missiles at Israel on Oct. 1 and as Israel plans its retaliatory attack. The THAAD battery, a mobile defense system, will give the Israel Defense Forces another layer of protection to defend cities, troops and installations from short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles like those deployed by Iran in its last attack.
Netanyahu tells U.S. that Israel will strike Iranian military, not nuclear or oil, targets, officials say (Washington Post) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the Biden administration he is willing to strike military rather than oil or nuclear facilities in Iran, according to two officials familiar with the matter, suggesting a more limited counterstrike aimed at preventing a full-scale war. In the two weeks since Iran’s latest missile barrage on Israel, its second direct attack in six months, the Middle East has braced for Israel’s promised response, fearing the two countries’ decades-long shadow war could explode into a head-on military confrontation. It comes at a politically fraught time for Washington, less than a month before the election, and President Joe Biden has said publicly he would not support an Israeli strike on nuclear-related sites. When Biden and Netanyahu spoke Wednesday—their first call in more than seven weeks after months of rising tensions between the two men—the prime minister said he was planning to target military infrastructure in Iran, according to a U.S. official and an official familiar with the matter.
Is Israel deploying a ‘surrender or starve’ strategy in Gaza? (Washington Post) Northern Gaza, already pummeled by a year of ruinous war, is in the grips of a punishing new Israeli offensive. Israeli forces encircled the battered Jabalya refugee camp in a bid to “systematically dismantle terrorist infrastructure,” according to an IDF statement. Israel issued evacuation orders to some 400,000 remaining residents in northern Gaza, telling them to go to areas farther south that are already teeming with the displaced and still hit by Israeli bombardments. Airstrikes have killed dozens. Aid workers described a catastrophic scene. “It is like hell to be honest,” Fares Afana, the head of ambulance services in northern Gaza, told The Washington Post in a voice note on Sunday. Israeli forces were attacking the Jabalya refugee camp “for the third time and its surroundings in Beit Lahya and Beit Hanoun,” Afana said, and the camp was surrounded “from all sides.” Humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders said Friday that thousands of people—including five of its staffers—were trapped in the Jabalya camp. “Nobody is allowed to get in or out—anyone who tries is getting shot,” Sarah Vuylsteke, a project coordinator for the organization, said in a news release. The intensifying siege will “continue as long as required in order to achieve its objectives,” the IDF said in a statement. It comes alongside an apparent blockade. No food trucks have entered at all in October. Such a tactic may fuel further accusations that Israel is deliberately starving Palestinians in Gaza.

She seemed like the model tenant. A 33-year-old nurse who was living at the Y.W.C.A. in Harlem, she had come to rent a one-bedroom at the still-unfinished Wilshire Apartments in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens. She filled out what the rental agent remembers as a “beautiful application.” She did not even want to look at the unit.
There was just one hitch: Maxine Brown was black.
Stanley Leibowitz, the rental agent, talked to his boss, Fred C. Trump.
“I asked him what to do and he says, ‘Take the application and put it in a drawer and leave it there,’” Mr. Leibowitz, now 88, recalled in an interview.
It was late 1963 — just months before President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the landmark Civil Rights Act — and the tall, mustachioed Fred Trump was approaching the apex of his building career. He was about to complete the jewel in the crown of his middle-class housing empire: seven 23-story towers, called Trump Village, spread across nearly 40 acres in Coney Island.
He was also grooming his heir. His son Donald, 17, would soon enroll at Fordham University in the Bronx, living at his parents’ home in Queens and spending much of his free time touring construction sites in his father’s Cadillac, driven by a black chauffeur.
“His father was his idol,” Mr. Leibowitz recalled. “Anytime he would come into the building, Donald would be by his side.”
Over the next decade, as Donald J. Trump assumed an increasingly prominent role in the business, the company’s practice of turning away potential black tenants was painstakingly documented by activists and organizations that viewed equal housing as the next frontier in the civil rights struggle.
The Justice Department undertook its own investigation and, in 1973, sued Trump Management for discriminating against blacks. Both Fred Trump, the company’s chairman, and Donald Trump, its president, were named as defendants. It was front-page news, and for Donald, amounted to his debut in the public eye.
Looking back, Mr. Trump’s response to the lawsuit can be seen as presaging his handling of subsequent challenges, in business and in politics. Rather than quietly trying to settle — as another New York developer had done a couple of years earlier — he turned the lawsuit into a protracted battle, complete with angry denials, character assassination, charges that the government was trying to force him to rent to “welfare recipients” and a $100 million countersuit accusing the Justice Department of defamation.
When it was over, Mr. Trump declared victory, emphasizing that the consent decree he ultimately signed did not include an admission of guilt.
But an investigation by The New York Times — drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors — uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.
That history has taken on fresh relevance with Mr. Trump arguing that black voters should support him over Hillary Clinton, whom he has called a bigot.
While there is no evidence that Mr. Trump personally set the rental policies at his father’s properties, he was on hand while they were in place, working out of a cubicle in Trump Management’s Brooklyn offices as early as the summer of 1968.
Then and now, Mr. Trump has steadfastly denied any awareness of any discrimination at Trump properties. While Mr. Trump declined to be interviewed for this article, his general counsel, Alan Garten, said in a statement that there was “no merit to the allegations.” And there has been no suggestion of racial bias toward prospective residents in the luxury housing that Mr. Trump focused on as his career took off in Manhattan in the 1980s.
In the past, Mr. Trump has treated the case as a footnote in the narrative of his career. In his memoir “The Art of the Deal,” he dispensed with it in five paragraphs. And while stumping in Ohio, he even singled out his work at one of his father’s properties in Cincinnati, omitting that, at the time, the development was the subject of a separate discrimination lawsuit — one that included claims of racial slurs uttered by a manager whom Mr. Trump had personally praised.
As eager as he was to leave behind the working-class precincts of New York City where Fred Trump had made his fortune, Donald Trump often speaks admiringly of him, recalling what he learned at his father’s side when the Trump name was synonymous with utilitarian housing, not yet with luxury, celebrity, or a polarizing brand of politics.
“My legacy has its roots in my father’s legacy,” he said last year.
Coming Under Scrutiny
Fred Trump got into the housing business when he was in his early 20s, building a single-family home for a neighbor in Queens. During World War II, he constructed housing for shipyard workers and Navy personnel in Norfolk, Va. After the war, he returned to New York, setting his sights on bigger, more ambitious projects, realized with the help of federal government loans.
His establishment as one of the city’s biggest developers was hardly free of controversy: The Senate Banking Committee subpoenaed him in 1954 during an investigation into profiteering off federal housing loans. Under oath, he acknowledged that he had wildly overstated the costs of a development to obtain a larger mortgage from the government.
In 1966, as the investigative journalist Wayne Barrett detailed in “Trump: The Greatest Show on Earth,” a New York legislative committee accused Fred Trump of using state money earmarked for middle-income housing to build a shopping center instead. One lawmaker called Mr. Trump “greedy and grasping.”
By this point, the Trump organization’s business practices were beginning to come under scrutiny from civil rights groups that had received complaints from prospective African-American tenants.
People like Maxine Brown.
Mr. Leibowitz, the rental agent at the Wilshire, remembered Ms. Brown repeatedly inquiring about the apartment. “Finally, she realized what it was all about,” he said.
Ms. Brown’s first instinct was to let the matter go; she was happy enough at the Y.W.C.A. “I had a big room and two meals a day for five dollars a week,” she said in an interview.
But a friend, Mae Wiggins, who had also been denied an apartment at the Wilshire, told her that she ought to have her own place, with a private bathroom and a kitchen. She encouraged Ms. Brown to file a complaint with the New York City Commission on Human Rights, as she was doing.
“We knew there was prejudice in renting,” Ms. Wiggins recalled. “It was rampant in New York. It made me feel really bad, and I wanted to do something to right the wrong.”
Applying for Housing at a Trump Property in the '60s
In the 1960s, Mae Wiggins and her friend Maxine Brown applied for housing at the Wilshire Apartments in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens, N.Y. Ms. Wiggins recalled her experience.
It was 52 years ago. My friend and I applied for an apartment at the Wilshire in Queens New York. [00:12:20] and we were both told that there were no vacancies. [00:07:06] I realized that there were vacancies because they still had the ad still running. [00:21:51] And I was pretty sure it was because of the color of skin. [00:18:31] We were professional people with good credit rating; no reason to be denied apartments. 14.33 When we first filed a complaint, they sent out testers — a white couple, and they were told that they could that they had a vacancy. [00:21:35] I felt really really angry and hurt. And after that we were told that we could go into the vacant apartments, but I could not go because my mom was sick at that time. I thought it was was worth to fight for both of us. [00:20:59] I have an activist nature as you probably have picked up. Through the years I felt that the Trump Organization was biased, [00:23:41] And I will go to my grave with that thought.
Mr. Leibowitz was called to testify at the commission’s hearing on Ms. Brown’s case. Asked to estimate how many blacks lived in Mr. Trump’s various properties, he remembered replying: “To the best of my knowledge, none.”
After the hearing, Ms. Brown was offered an apartment in the Wilshire, and in the spring of 1964, she moved in. For 10 years, she said, she was the only African-American in the building.
Complaints about the Trump organization’s rental policies continued to mount: By 1967, state investigators found that out of some 3,700 apartments in Trump Village, seven were occupied by African-American families.
Like Ms. Brown, the few minorities who did live in Trump-owned buildings often had to force their way in.
A black woman named Agnes Bunn recalled hearing in early 1970 about a vacant Trump apartment in another part of Queens, from a white friend who lived in the building. But when she went by, she was told there were no vacancies.
“The super came out and stood there until I left the property,” Ms. Bunn said.
Ms. Bunn testified about the experience at a meeting with the New York City Commission on Human Rights in 1970. According to a summary, recovered from the New York City Municipal Archives, she told a Trump lawyer that it was known that no “colored” people were wanted as tenants in the building.
The lawyer concluded that the episode was “all a misunderstanding.” Ms. Bunn and her husband, a Manhattan accountant, soon became the building’s first black tenants.
Unlike the public schools, the housing market could not be desegregated simply by court order. Even after passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which prohibited racial discrimination in housing, developments in white neighborhoods continued to rebuff blacks.
For years, it fell largely to local civil rights groups to highlight the problem by sending white “testers” into apartment complexes after blacks had been turned away.
“Everything was sort of whispers and innuendo and you wanted to try to bring it out into the open,” recalled Phyllis Kirschenbaum, who volunteered for Operation Open City, a housing rights advocacy organization. “I’d walk in with my freckles and red hair and Jewish name and get an apartment immediately.”
The complaints of discrimination were not limited to New York.
In 1969, a young black couple, Haywood and Rennell Cash, sued after being denied a home in Cincinnati at one of the first projects in which Donald Trump, fresh out of college, played an active role.
Mr. Cash was repeatedly rejected by the Trumps’ rental agent, according to court records and notes kept by Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Cincinnati, which sent in white testers posing as a young couple while Mr. Cash waited in the car.
After the agent, Irving Wolper, offered the testers an apartment, they brought in Mr. Cash. Mr. Wolper grew furious, shoving them out of the office and calling the young female tester, Maggie Durham, a “nigger-lover,” according to court records.
“To this day I have not forgotten the fury in his voice and in his face,” Ms. Durham recalled recently, adding that she also remembered him calling her a “traitor to the race.”
The Cashes were ultimately offered an apartment.
At a campaign stop in Ohio recently, Mr. Trump shared warm memories of his time in Cincinnati, calling it one of the early successes of his career. And in “The Art of the Deal,” he praised Mr. Wolper, without using his surname, calling him a “fabulous man” and “an amazing manager.”
“Irving was a classic,” Mr. Trump wrote.
The young Mr. Trump also spent time in Norfolk, helping manage the housing complexes his father built there in the 1940s. Similar complaints of discrimination surfaced at those properties beginning in the mid-1960s, and were documented by Ellis James, an equal housing activist.
“The managers on site were usually not very sophisticated,” Mr. James, now 78, recalled. “Some were dedicated segregationists, but most of them were more concerned with following the policies they were directed to keep.”
Battling the Government
Donald Trump said he had first heard about the lawsuit, which was filed in the fall of 1973, on his car radio.
The government had charged him, his father and their company, Trump Management Inc., with violating the Fair Housing Act.
Another major New York developer, the LeFrak Organization, had been hit with a similar suit a few years earlier. Its founder, Samuel LeFrak, had appeared at a news conference alongside the United States attorney, trumpeting a consent agreement to prohibit discrimination in his buildings by saying it would “make open housing in our cities a reality.” The LeFrak company even offered the equivalent of one month’s rent to help 50 black families move into predominantly white buildings.
Donald Trump took a different approach. He retained Senator Joseph McCarthy’s red-baiting counsel, Roy Cohn, to defend him. Mr. Trump soon called his own news conference — to announce his countersuit against the government.
The government’s lawyers took as their starting point the years of research conducted by civil rights groups at Trump properties.
“We did our own investigation and enlarged the case,” said Elyse Goldweber, who as a young assistant United States attorney worked on the lawsuit, U.S.A. v. Trump.
A former Trump superintendent named Thomas Miranda testified that multiple Trump Management employees had instructed him to attach a separate piece of paper with a big letter “C” on it — for “colored” — to any application filed by a black apartment-seeker.
The Trumps went on the offensive, filing a contempt-of-court charge against one of the prosecutors, accusing her of turning the investigation into a “Gestapo-like interrogation.” The Trumps derided the lawsuit as a pressure tactic to get them to sign a consent decree like the one agreed to by Mr. LeFrak.
The judge dismissed both the countersuit and the contempt-of-court charge. After nearly two years of legal wrangling, the Trumps gave up and signed a consent decree.
As is customary, it did not include an admission of guilt. But it did include pages of stipulations intended to ensure the desegregation of Trump properties.
Equal housing activists celebrated the agreement as more robust than the one signed by Mr. LeFrak. It required that Trump Management provide the New York Urban League with a weekly list of all its vacancies.
This did not stop Mr. Trump from declaring victory. “In the end the government couldn’t prove its case, and we ended up making a minor settlement without admitting any guilt,” he wrote in “The Art of the Deal.”
Only this was not quite the end.
A few years later, the government accused the Trumps of violating the consent decree. “We believe that an underlying pattern of discrimination continues to exist in the Trump Management organization,” a Justice Department lawyer wrote to Mr. Cohn in 1978.
Once again, the government marshaled numerous examples of blacks being denied Trump apartments. But this time, it also identified a pattern of racial steering.
While more black families were now renting in Trump-owned buildings, the government said, many had been confined to a small number of complexes. And tenants in some of these buildings had complained about the conditions, from falling plaster to rusty light fixtures to bloodstained floors.
The Trumps effectively wore the government down. The original consent decree expired before the Justice Department had accumulated enough evidence to press its new case.
The issue was becoming academic, anyway. New York’s white working-class population was shrinking. Shifting demographics would soon make it impractical to turn away black tenants.
By the spring of 1982, when the case was officially closed, Donald Trump’s prized project, Trump Tower, was just months from completion. The rebranding of the Trump name was well underway.
As for Ms. Brown, she still lives in the same apartment in the Wilshire.
Over the years, she has watched the building’s complexion begin to change — along with some of her neighbors’ attitudes toward her. During the 1990s, one man who used to step off the elevator whenever she stepped on suddenly started greeting her warmly.
On a recent afternoon, she reminisced about the unlikely role she played in breaking the color barrier of the Trump real estate empire.
“I just wanted a decent place to live,” she said.

Furihata is an ecologist with more than 10 years of experience, yet he feels there's so much more about the unknown out there. So when an opportunity for the potential discovery of a lifetime arrives, Furihata jumps at the chance.
His mission? Study the ecosystems at Teikō Island for a few days & bring back some of the flora for samples, further studies & research.
And so off Furihata goes. But by the time he arrives at the nearest beach, nobody wants to take him to the island, for fear of the unpredictable weather. Except for one person, that is. Akashi. Captain & guide of the "Rakuzan" rental boat, he's the only one up to the challenge & is willing to take the ecologist to finish his job.
All he have to do is take Furihata as a passenger to Teikō Island, gets paid as per his rate & then leave. Simple, right?
Except there's the unpredictable weather, as many of the locals warned. And just like they fear, a loud thunder strikes Akashi's boat, completely destroyed it to pieces.
The worst part? Both Akashi & Furihata are still on the island. With no means of transportation, they're trapped for who knows how long...
!!!!!!!!! no no no hear me out, i love this. this sounds like a generic 2000s film that we have probably both seen but just something about putting a ship in that context- it makes me feral. and its so rare too!?! like there are hundreds more cute coffee shop / flower shop / tattoo parlor AUs (and i like them on occasion) but something about these just hits different
okay so, this would involve them working together to survive, getting into arguments, comforting each other, kissing by a campfire on the beach shore... sighhhh i see it now :)
im a little curious if there will be any cameos by the other GOM as this is the island Teiko and if it is mystical at all? Or are the two boys stranded alone... either way this sounds very entertaining!
sidenote: i love movie based fanfics (heck i'm writing one) - as long as characters stay true to their character, the logic of everything makes sense, and you don't pull every dialogue direct from the movie.

character: polly open: m/f/nb plot: polly and your muse have decided to rent a car together after their flight was canceled. polly needs to make it back home for the holidays, it’s up to you what reason your muse has for needing to go to new york. it’s also up to you if the situation is legitimate or your muse has nefarious intent for getting a young woman alone in a car for an extended period of time. this post was made using legacy editor.
polly, despite her sweet demeanor, didn’t much believe in the kindness of strangers. as a professional nanny, people tended to assume she was as carefree and lively as mary poppins or maria from the sound of music. truthfully, she was much more reserved and quiet than a julie andrews character, putting on an act for the sake of the children and the parents alike. no, inwardly, polly was distrustful of nearly everyone due to her father’s involvement in the bratva. that was why it was so strange that she would ever end up playing passenger princess with a stranger in a rental car. polina didn’t know what else to do, stranded at the airport far away from her family in long island. in any other circumstance, she’d never accept a ride from someone she didn’t already know, but desperate times... at least she wasn’t alone in being totally screwed over by the weather and the airline. sitting quietly, hands folded neatly in her lap, polly didn’t know what to do or what to say. perhaps her travel buddy preferred silence, maybe they felt just as awkward as she did. it was a long, snow-covered road to new york, surely they’d have to converse at some point. polly took a chance: “so... are you from new york, too?” she asked, voice cracking briefly. she smiled nervously. “i mean, if we’re gonna be stuck in a car together for eight hours, we might as well get to know each other, right?”

This Showrunner’s Challenge fascinated me, so @silbrith and I talked through it in our recent writing retreat, using White Collar as the fandom.
We went through two rounds. The first was starting fresh with the canon material, and the second looked at how I would approach it in our White Collar AU, Caffrey Conversation. It was a lot of fun, so I want to share the results with you. I want to keep spoilers to a minimum, so I focused on season 1 of WC.
Overview:
Round 1: Honestly, the WC writers did most of this in the first season.
Round 2: Honestly, in an AU that’s nearing 3 million words, we’ve done most of this, too. I focused on stories I wrote, but we could do this for Silbrith’s stories, too
The details: Below is the original challenge and how we aligned it to WC and CC.
Begin writing a fanfic.
1 Everything at once. (we treated this as starting the story)
Round 1: The White Collar pilot
Round 2: The first story in the CC series
2 Product placement!
Round 1: Peter’s car. Obviously there was a product placement deal regarding the Ford Taurus in the first seasons. Other product placement opportunities included coffee. Or in S1E2 “Threads” there could have been ads for a line of clothing or for Project Runway.
Round 2: CC Story #2 “Choirboy Caffrey” mentioned a rental car and that would have been ideal product placement. I had a Toyota in mind but I don’t remember if I mentioned the brand.
3 Fan favorite. Your most recently mentioned character (or named object) is now beloved by the audience. You must give it a bigger part in the story
Round 1: S1E4 “Flip of the Coin” gives El a larger part because her best friend needed help, so we see her at the FBI offices.
Round 2: In CC story #4 “By the Book” OC Henry gets his moment to shine.
4 Executive meddling. You must change to a different genre.
Round 1: S1E3 “Book of Hours” has a lot of focus on miracles and a book that can supposedly heal. When I first watched that episode, I wondered if the show was veering into a supernatural genre.
Round 2: CC story #38 “A Caffrey Christmas Carol” sent the characters into sci-fi territory.
5 Audiences are craving more coziness. The next chapter must be completely low stakes and set you at ease.
Round 1: S1E12 “Bottlenecked” – okay, I don’t remember much about this episode, but the main plot is a competition to fool an expert into believing a newly created bottle of wine is actually a couple hundred years old.
Round 2: CC story #68 “Movie Night” was mostly about a competition to pick the best movie for viewing at a holiday gathering.
6 Audiences are craving more suspense. The next chapter must take place entirely in a single location, ideally just a single room, and build tension with every exchange of dialog.
Round 1: S1E8 “Hard Sell” spends much of the episode at an estate on Long Island with a particularly suspenseful scene in a room that is rapidly running out of air.
Round 2: CC story #5 “Caffrey Envoy” is set almost entirely in the WC offices, although there are flashbacks to a townhouse in D.C. The scenes of Neal and an Air Force officer in Hughes’ office, viewed by Peter through the glass wall, had some suspense. But I had more suspense in CC story #9 “Caffrey Disclosure” in the scenes where they have a bad guy with a hostage cornered in a warehouse.
7 Audiences are craving more action. The next chapter needs to involve at least one extended fight scene.
Round 1: S1E13 “Front Man” included some Neal whump. I’d have to go into later seasons for a true fight scene – I’m thinking of the one between Neal and Keller during The Treasure arc, where Peter comes to the rescue.
Round 2: CC story #7 “Caffrey Flashback” included a fair amount of action, such as a life-or-death rush to the hospital, a chase scene in the hospital, and someone stealing Peter’s gun and using it to threaten someone in the hospital. Plus there is a flashback to a child struggling against an abductor. And Peter shoots someone. Fight scenes really aren’t my thing, though, so I can't think of an example of hand-to-hand combat.
8 Audiences are craving more romance. The next chapter needs to involve a deep, sappy confession of either love or admiration
Round 1: S1E10 “Vital Signs” contains the “You’re the only one I really trust” scene between Peter and Neal. It doesn’t get better than that.
Round 2: CC story #54 “Lavender Dreams” has a wedding, many references to couples in Jane Austen novels, and a proposal.
9 Go to the most recent line in your fic that references a brand. Due to ongoing legal action, that brand cannot be mentioned again, but you score 1 audience point every time you allude to it in a way that paints it in a negative light.
Round 1: It would have been easy to add this to S1E7 “Free Fall” by turning the diamond theft into a lesson about blood diamonds and the diamond trade.
Round 2: This one’s tough because I’ve tried to avoid mentioning brand names in fic. CC story #6 “Written in the Stars” mentions Star Wars, which gets mentioned again in later stories, so that could be an option.
10 The two most recently mentioned characters' actors have, IRL, gone through a VERY messy divorce or friend breakup. You cannot put them in the same scene, but they must both remain relevant parts of the show.
Round 1: It would have been easy to add this to S1E9 “Bad Judgement” and later episodes in S1. Agent Fowler has an important role, but he’s also getting into trouble at the FBI so he’s working behind the scenes. So that could work if the actors portraying him and Peter had a beef.
Round 2: CC story #9 “Caffrey Disclosure” would work well for this. A lot of the plot focuses on looking for OC Henry, who is working behind the scenes, so a friend breakup between the actors portraying him and Neal works. There’s also a section in the middle of the story where Neal is traveling and only catches up with Peter over the phone, so that could have been a temporary friend breakup between those two actors.
11 The most recent negative event is now the center of a very real IRL news story. You must immediately pivot away from all plotlines involving it and, if possible, also find away to apologize for even thinking to include it.
Round 1: I went with The Treasure arc in season 2 for this, tying back to fans being upset about the source of the treasure.
Round 2: In CC story #4 “By the Book” and following stories there were originally references to a series about a school of wizardry, and I replaced those references with a fictional series when I learned what the author had been up to.
12 The most recently mentioned character's actor has decided to leave the show. You must write them out in the next chapter.
Round 1: S1E14 “Out of the Box” – No details in this post, to avoid spoilers for people currently watching on Netflix
Round 2: an OC who had a big role in the story dies in #9 “Caffrey Disclosure”
You win if you can complete the fic in a state of relative coherency.
Conclusion: Are White Collar and Caffrey Conversation coherent? Maybe not always, but they are fun!
Thanks for following along!
There should be a fanfic writing game called the showrunners challenge where someone writes a story and partway through someone else can play things like "actor leaves after 4000 more words" or "topic now too politically sensitive due to unforeseen world events" or "lost rights to that reference"

Whether you’re looking for a new family home, a vacation retreat, or an investment property, understanding the current market trends and knowing where to find the best Guam homes for sale is crucial. This comprehensive guide will provide you with essential tips and insights to help you make informed decisions in 2024.
1. Collaborate with a Trusted Guam Real Estate Agent
Why a Local Expert Can Help
Working with a knowledgeable Guam Real Estate Agent can greatly simplify your search for Guam homes for sale. A local agent has expertise in the island’s real estate market, including current property values, neighborhood trends, and available listings. Their insights can help you identify properties that align with your needs and budget.
2. Define Your Home Buying Criteria
Establish Your Priorities
Before diving into the market, it’s important to clearly define what you’re looking for in a home. Consider factors such as location, size, amenities, and budget. Whether you’re interested in a beachfront property, a family home in a suburban neighborhood, or a condo close to work, having a clear set of criteria will streamline your search and help your Guam realtor find the best matches.
3. Research Various Neighborhoods
Find the Best Area for You
Guam offers a range of neighborhoods, each with its unique character and advantages. Research different areas to find out which ones best suit your lifestyle and preferences. From bustling urban centers to serene coastal communities, understanding the different neighborhoods will help you make an informed choice when looking at Guam homes for sale.
4. Utilize Online Listings and Resources
Maximize Your Search Efficiency
Online platforms are a valuable resource when searching for Guam homes for sale. Websites like https://romaguamproperties.com/ offer detailed listings, high-quality photos, and comprehensive information about available properties. Use these resources to filter your search by location, price, and features, and keep track of new listings that meet your criteria.
5. Schedule Property Viewings
See Homes in Person
While online listings provide a good starting point, visiting homes in person is essential to get a true sense of the property. Schedule viewings to assess the condition of the home, explore the neighborhood, and determine if it meets your expectations. Your Guam Real Estate Agent can assist with arranging viewings and provide valuable feedback during the process.
6. Understand the Buying Process
Know What to Expect
Familiarize yourself with the home buying process in Guam. This includes understanding the steps involved, from making an offer to closing the sale. Your Guam realtor will guide you through each stage, including negotiating terms, handling paperwork, and coordinating with lenders and inspectors.
7. Consider Long-Term Investment Potential
Evaluate Future Value
When looking at Guam homes for sale, consider the long-term investment potential of the property. Research market trends, neighborhood development plans, and potential rental income if you’re considering the home as an investment. Your real estate agent can provide insights into the property’s future value and how it fits into the broader market.
8. Review Lease Options if Needed
Explore All Possibilities
If you’re not ready to buy, or if you’re looking for interim housing, explore Guam homes for rent or Guam apartments for rent as alternative options. Understanding the rental market can also provide insights into property values and availability, helping you make a more informed decision when you’re ready to purchase.
Conclusion
Finding the perfect home among the Guam homes for sale in 2024 requires careful consideration and strategic planning. By collaborating with a skilled Guam Real Estate Agent, defining your buying criteria, researching neighborhoods, and utilizing online resources, you can streamline your search and find a property that meets your needs. Leave the World Behind: *** out of 5
There’s been a steady fixation on end-of-the-world scenarios lately, both in the real world and in the stories we consume. Reasons abound for our pessimistic view of Earth’s future, so it’s not only understandable for our works of fiction to reflect this feeling but entirely expected. Leave the World Behind is the latest depiction of society’s increasing existential angst.
In Sam Esmail’s new psychological thriller, the writer/director wastes no time getting to these heavy themes. The very first scene sees protagonist Amanda Sandford (a weary Julia Roberts) spring it on her half-asleep husband, Clay (Ethan Hawke), that she’s arranged an impromptu weekend vacation for the family at a rental house on Long Island. Her frenzied spontaneity might suggest some sort of mental illness, but what she utters to cap off the scene indicates her problem is even worse: “I fucking hate people.” It’s a sentiment that’s at once a justifiable reaction to our world and a vital factor in how that very world came into being. What’s clear is that Amanda cares less about where they’re going than where they’re leaving, New York City, which happens to be brimming with people.
Upon arriving at their destination, it’s clear this won’t be an ideal vacation, despite the gigantic, modern home and picturesque surroundings. First, the TV and Wi-Fi stop working which, in today’s terms, is all but catastrophic. Also, Amanda notices someone (a sadly underused Kevin Bacon) at the grocery store stocking up on essentials while back at the house, deer show up in gradually larger numbers, an ominous and recurring element that otherwise never completely works. Then there’s the oil tanker that approaches the beach where the family’s trying to relax, causing confusion at first, then utter chaos as the vessel rams into shore. This scene, on the other hand, does work, a nerve-racking set piece that really cranks up the tension.
However, the most intriguing and morally ambiguous dilemma involves the unannounced arrival of George and his daughter Ruth (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold), who claim to be the homeowners. Apparently, they’ve returned seeking shelter due to a blackout in New York City, but whether that’s true is part of the mystery. The characters also happen to be black, a crucial detail for this story and one that challenges both the Sandfords and the audience to confront any prejudices they hold. The more affable Clay is willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but Amanda is skeptical, barely able to conceal her simmering bigotry.
Yet, the characters transcend oversimplified labels; they’re realistic, their behaviour nuanced. The actors involved are too experienced for one-dimensional performances. Indeed, it’s quite rare for such a distinguished cast to be in this kind of project, but it’s a welcome luxury and one that makes up for an underwhelming picture.
The actors hold our attention and pull us into this mayhem, but so too does Esmail, whose keen sense of pacing and dialogue, combined with the performances and Mac Quayle’s eerie score, helps craft a gripping experience, a mystery begging to be unraveled. The setup is akin to Jordan Peele’s Us, 2019’s near-masterpiece that also begins with strangers arriving at the rental home of a vacationing family. Yet, adept as he is, Esmail falls short of Peele’s mastery of ideas and images.
For one thing, he’s overly busy with his camera. It moves around every which way, from above and below, spinning around and spying on our characters. At first, it adds suspense, but it becomes distracting, as if a recent film grad’s just itching to use every trick he’s learned. He also stages some clunky set pieces involving a crashing airplane or a fleet of self-driving cars that deviate from the story’s tone. Even worse is a late scene featuring a sea of deer that’s unintentionally goofy due to some shoddy CGI and bizarre character reactions.
As the larger picture comes into focus, the tension dissipates like the air from a balloon as we reach a conclusion that feels, if not predictable then frustratingly inevitable. Esmail is an astute observer of humanity and the conclusions he draws are sound, but it’s as if he’s reciting an essay instead of telling a story. Much of the content is over-explained, leaving scant room for subtext or interpretation. At the same time, he scatters on the screen an array of societal flaws like class inequality, racism, cynicism, over-reliance on technology, environmental abuse, etc but never completely zooms in for a closer look, settling for superficial insight.
This trend of over-explaining and under-developing is seen in the racial tension that develops subtlety but never fully, and when the filmmakers do address the sad situation of the black homeowners sleeping in the basement while the white visitors sleep upstairs, a character spells it out for us while a visual cue would’ve done just fine. Storytellers like Peele conjure up all sorts of intriguing symbols and concepts that coalesce for the narrative’s sake but not at the expense of our own intellect or imagination. We draw our own conclusions from the exquisite pieces that Peele lays out; in Leave the World Behind, Esmail does all the work for us.
There’s a subplot in the film involving the daughter, Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), and her quest to finish the program, Friends. She’s reached the series finale but can’t stream it once the internet goes down. This is her primary concern as the world’s ending. It’s supposed to be a metaphor for our misplaced priorities and over reliance on modern technology, but it also represents the seemingly trivial little bits of comfort we cling to when we’re distressed. This relates to something Clay says about his student who’s writing a book on how media serves as both an escape and a reflection.
Friends was never extraordinary. It’s not as brilliant, incisive or original as some of its contemporaries like Seinfeld or Frasier. Yet, despite that, its characters and their stories make it thoroughly watchable. In that sense, Leave the World Behind is as much a reflection of Friends as it is the real world, though it’s doubtful you’ll revisit it as much as the juicy drama between Ross and Rachel.
