Lens Calibration Madness

I was doing some more tests comparing my smartphone camera to my DSLR and I noticed in one of them the smartphone looked sharper than my DSLR.

This did not compute.

How did a camera with a tiny sensor, half the megapixels, and a tiny plastic lens produce a sharper image?

Then I remembered that 3rd party lenses often need to be calibrated in order to focus properly. Canon is especially bad about restricting information about their focusing algorithms, so companies like Sigma have to reverse engineer everything. With mirrorless cameras they have been able to fix this focusing issue. DSLRs... not so mich.

Unfortunately, my camera has a flippy mirror that gets out of the way of the sensor every time you take a picture. That's the clicking sound most people associate with taking a photo. And since the mirror in a DSLR is a moving part, it will have some variability from camera to camera. And wouldn't you know it, DSLRs use that mirror to focus. If my mirror is even a few nanometers out of alignment compared to the camera Sigma used to create the focusing system for their lenses, I will not be able to get perfectly accurate autofocusing.

It will be good enough for most. But with all of the product photos and macros I do, having perfect focus is pretty critical.

So now I need to spend a couple of hours photographing test targets.

The lens was "front focusing."

You want the depth of field to cover the same distance in front of the 0 as behind. You can see the 1 and 2 at the top are blurry. The goal is to have the 1 and the 1 to be of equal sharpness. Ideally if you put the 1 and 1 next to each other, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

This caused a problem when taking a picture of a cylinder, like the flashlight I was using as a test subject. The text at the center of the cylinder was in focus, but the sides were farther away and started getting blurry. All of the in focus area was in the empty space in front of the flashlight.

But, after 20 test shots adjusting the focus correction 1 unit each time, I was finally able to dial it in.

And then when I redid my photos of the flashlight...

Not only was the DSLR much sharper, you can now see the individual lines from the printing process.

I have been using this lens like this for years and now I am wondering how many photos were a smidge out of focus. It's not a huge deal because you have to be zoomed in about 400% to really notice. And it really only affects photos taken less than 2 feet away.

But still, perfectionism is a pretty big trigger for my anxiety so I need to fix this so my brain doesn't melt every time I take a photo in the future.

Unfortunately, the issue isn't resolved with one adjustment.

It requires 16 adjustments.

You set the focal length of the lens to 18mm and take a test picture from 28 cm, 35 cm, 50 cm, and 2 m.

Then you set it to 24mm and do it over again.

Then 28mm.

Then 35mm.

And there is no gaurantee you will fix it with the first adjustment. You could overshoot or undershoot. So you have to keep testing and testing until you drill down and hit the bullseye.

All because Canon doesn't like other companies making lenses for their cameras.

Sigma will actually do the calibration for you, but you have to send them both your camera and your lens and who knows how long that would take.

And I really want to bring my camera to Florida in a few weeks.

So I guess I've got another project aside from my 20 other things I need to get done.

Remembering silent film star, NORMA TALMADGE

One of the most popular stars of the 1920s, she was the oldest of the three Talmadge sisters, Constance and Natalie being the other two, who were also in the movies.

Talmadge first made films for Vitagraph Studios in NYC, making over 250 movies for them. She made movies for Triangle then formed her own company, the Norma Talmadge Film Corporation.

Moving to Hollywood in 1922, Talmadge became one of the highest paid actresses of the 1920s, earning $10,000 a week, almost $200,000 today.

When sound movies came on the scene, Talmadge made two of them - both Pre-Code films, in 1929 and 1930. Those were her last ones. She retired and distanced herself from the trappings of Hollywood.

Norma Talmadge died in 1957 at the age of 63.

Chandler Halderson, 23, seemed to have a bright future ahead of him. At such a young age, he had already accomplished tremendous milestones. A recent college graduate in IT, he worked remotely from home for a local insurance company. He was also on the police suba diving team and, even more impressively, recently landed a job at Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX. Suffice to say--Chandler’s parents, Bart and Krista Halderson, were exceptionally proud of their son.

As of June 2021, Chandler was still living at his parents’ home in Windsor, Wisconsin. He planned to move to Florida with his girlfriend soon in order to accept the job at SpaceX, but something hindered that monumental move--a nasty fall down the stairs, in which he sustained a concussion and neck injury which required him to wear a neckbrace. The doctors warned Chandler that he may need brain surgery if his symptoms worsened and discouraged him from long-distance travel until he fully recovered. Due to this, he had to cancel his move to Florida, and tragically lost his position at SpaceX as a result.

But Chandler’s parents began having suspicions. Their son worked long, hard hours at his online insurance company job, yet he never seemed to have money. Chandler always had an excuse as to why he wasn’t being paid--once claiming there was a glitch with the payroll software. He showed his father email exchanges with his employer as proof. Chandler was also exchanging emails with his school’s administrators,  Alyssa Brandt and Daniel Speith, regarding his diploma and transcripts he was trying to obtain. 

Bart’s suspicions only began growing from these emails. He took it upon himself to call Madison College, where his son graduated. Speaking directly with the enrollment coordinator, he identified himself as Chandler Halderson and explained he was trying to request his diploma and transcripts. He told the coordinator he previously exchanged emails with Alyssa Brandt and Daniel Speith regarding the issue. The coordinator did not recognize either of those names. To add to the confusion, he was told that he never graduated and had flunked out of college in the fall of 2020, still owing $2000 in tuition. 

After the phone call, Bart told Chandler he set up an appointment with school officials on July 1st to get to the bottom of everything, not telling him what he had just discovered over the phone.

Chandler knew his web of lies were about to be unraveled. Because it was true--he never completed his degree. Nor did he have a job lined up for him at SpaceX. Nor was he a volunteer for the police scuba diving team--such a thing didn’t even exist! Nor did he have an online job with an insurance company--that was just an excuse for him to stay at home playing video games all day. Those email exchanges with school officials and his employers were all fake. And his head injury? Also a sham.

When July 1st rolled around, Bart sent Chandler a text right before the appointment reading, I’m ready when you are. But this would be the last anyone’s ever heard from Bart. Chandler ended up shooting his father. When his mother returned home from work a few hours later, she met the same fate (it is not exactly known how she was killed). He then dismembered his parents’ bodies and attempted to burn their remains in the home fireplace. He then scattered his father’s remains around the property of a farm owned by his girlfriend’s family. He disposed of his mother’s remains in the forest by the Wisconsin River. 

Chandler reported his parents missing on July 7th, telling police they went up north to their cabin for the Fourth of July and never returned. Chandler was eventually caught in his lies and arrested for the murder of his parents and was sentenced to life in prison.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lunar lander lifts off from Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1:05 a.m. EST on Feb. 15, 2024. As part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign, Intuitive Machines’ first lunar mission will carry NASA science and commercial payloads to the Moon to study plume-surface interactions, space weather/lunar surface interactions, radio astronomy, precision landing technologies, and a communication and navigation node for future autonomous navigation technologies. A suite of NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations is on the way to our nearest celestial neighbor for the benefit of humanity. Through this flight to the Moon, they will provide insights into the lunar surface environment and test technologies for future landers and Artemis astronauts. At 1:05 a.m. EST on Thursday, Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At approximately 1:53 a.m., the lander deployed from the Falcon 9 second stage. Teams confirmed it made communications contact with the company’s mission operations center in Houston. The spacecraft is stable and receiving solar power. These deliveries are part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign, which includes new solar system science to better understand planetary processes and evolution, search for evidence of water and other resources, and support long-term human exploration. “NASA scientific instruments are on their way to the Moon – a giant leap for humanity as we prepare to return to the lunar surface for the first time in more than half a century,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “These daring Moon deliveries will not only conduct new science at the Moon, but they are supporting a growing commercial space economy while showing the strength of American technology and innovation. We have so much to learn through CLPS flights that will help us shape the future of human exploration for the Artemis Generation.”  While enroute to the Moon, NASA instruments will measure the quantity of cryogenic engine fuel as it is used, and during descent toward the lunar surface, they will collect data on plume-surface interactions and test precision landing technologies. NASA science aboard the lander includes: Lunar Node 1 Navigation Demonstrator: A small, CubeSat-sized experiment that will demonstrate autonomous navigation that could be used by future landers, surface infrastructure, and astronauts, digitally confirming their positions on the Moon relative to other spacecraft, ground stations, or rovers on the move. Laser Retroreflector Array: A collection of eight retroreflectors that enable precision laser ranging, which is a measurement of the distance between the orbiting or landing spacecraft to the reflector on the lander. The array is a passive optical instrument and will function as a permanent location marker on the Moon for decades to come.    Navigation Doppler Lidar for Precise Velocity and Range Sensing: A Lidar-based (Light Detection and Ranging) guidance system for descent and landing. Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies: A suite of four tiny cameras to capture imagery showing how the Moon’s surface changes from interactions with the spacecraft’s engine plume during and after descent. Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C-class lunar lander, named Odysseus, is scheduled to land on the Moon’s South Pole region near the lunar feature known as Malapert A on Thursday, Feb. 22. This relatively flat and safe region is within the otherwise heavily cratered southern highlands on the side of the Moon visible from Earth. Bob drags two pieces of toast onto his plate, then reaches over to grab the small packets of strawberry jelly. He's slow as he spreads the jelly across the toast. As direct as her words are, he knows Nat means well. Nor is she wrong in her advice. Military men were not easy to love. Bob learned that through his mom. He kept his mom company on the long deployments and helped packed the boxes as soon as he was old enough for each of their countless moves. Hawaii, Florida, and Germany - just to name a few of their brief stays. Unlike many, though, their relationship was strained only by the distance. His mom, nor his dad, sought the company of others when forced apart by the Navy, not emotionally or otherwise. They wrote each other letters even when they had other options. Mom mastered the art of carefully sharing information; she never told Dad about things he'd be unable to help all those miles away. Often, it was Bob staying up to comfort his mom when someone was in the hospital or they had to attend another funeral.

But while his parents beat the odds and survived what many could not, Bob couldn't imagine putting someone through the same hardships. Not as a pilot, at least. It wasn't just the inherent danger of flying planes in inhospitable air space. Merely flying on base came with the risk of death. Mechanical failures, drowsiness that lead to clumsy fingers, and a foggy brain could be just as deadly as any enemy.

He takes a bite of the toast and then a gulp of orange juice, bulging his cheeks to get Nat to smile. Her worry may be welcome, but it makes him a tad bit uneasy. They can't afford distraction when they fly. He can't be thought of as weak. He wants to reassure her - he's okay, even if he is lonely. Like anything else they've had to face for their careers, he'll handle it. He'll get over it.

"You know I hate bar hook-ups," Bob says over a mouthful of food. Hate is too strong of a word, perhaps. He's no stranger to them. Getting off is getting off and often, he can't be too picky. Still, he yearns for more than one-night stands and short flings that rarely last more than a few months at best.

"Who else is out there," he sighs, eyes downcast. Dating is hard enough, near impossible when Bob's reluctant to burden a civilian with the life he chose for himself. He thinks of his parents, his dad's silence and his mom's tears when he told them he accepted a Navy ROTC spot in college. Despite the pressure Bob felt to follow in his family's footsteps in service, his dad had ultimately warned him away from making the same sacrifices. They had both been excited by his acceptance into MIT. Finally, someone was walking a different, better path for themselves. Their excitement had been shortlived and for the first two years, his dad had only shared a few words with him.

"Maybe if they were in the Navy, they'd at least get it," he hedges, even if he knows that it's a non-starter. Rationalizing only does so much. Whatever understanding may come from familiarity with deployment and command dictating much of their lives, it ended there. "What would you do?"

            It had been a long hot summer, with Hawkins slowly recovering, normality crept back in, with a few little changes. His growing friendship with Eddie Munson of all people, one of them, they’d barely known each other before Spring, only vaguely aware of each other's existence and neither of them with any desire to know much more.

          Until everything changed, until they fought side by side and saved the town and along with the world as they knew it. Eddie was everything Steve was too afraid to be; he was unapologetically himself, even in the face of a town that branded him a freak and monster, where Steve barely knew who he was. Steve’s whole life planned out for him, expectation pushed onto him before he would even walk, but he never brought anything but disappointment to the Harrington name.        In the weeks that followed the gates finally being closed for good they would all pile in to Steve’s house, with his parents down in Florida for the foreseeable the last thing he wanted was to be alone, and slowly as things crept back to normal the party would spend less time at Steve’s, all but Eddie, who would spend most nights there, two warm bodies seeking comfort and closeness in each other. Steve had known for months now that his feelings for Eddie went beyond platonic with a capital P, and despite several freak-outs to Robin about it, Steve still did nothing, not wanting to ruin their friendship with his silly little crush. Even if he was sure Eddie was flirting with him back, it was hard to tell when Eddie was a flirt by nature.

     They’re watching a Movie, some arty shit Eddie picked that Steve stopped following along to within the first twenty minutes, Steve’s on the couch with Eddie on the floor, between Steve’s legs, joint lit, head tilted back, and Steve leans in to pluck it from him, but instead Eddie grins and asks him if he’s ever shotgun, of course he had, and he tells him that, eyes rolling, but he stays close, leaning forward, while Eddie leans back, head tilted back and tells Steve to be a good boy and open his mouth, Steve swears he is torturing him on purpose. But he complies, their lips almost touch, as Eddie breathes out the smoke directly into Steve’s mouth, sucking in, pupils blown as he looks down at Eddie, their lips still hovering milometers apart like some torturous game of chicken. And every inch of Steve’s body wants to close that gap. To kiss him, like the countless daydreams he’s had about what it might be like to kiss Eddie. How would his lips feel, would be they soft, he wonders, they look soft, he thinks tongue running over his own still dangerously close.
