The Duchess [of Malfi] at the Trafalgar Theatre is a rather messy adaptation that I wasn't super fond of. The semi-modernised dialogue felt impossible for the actors to deliver, the music was implemented clumsily (although I loved getting to hear Jodie Whittaker sing), and the mid-20th century setting just undermines the themes of the play IMO.

BUT THAT BEING SAID

You do also get to see Paul Ready with a clipped beard in various priest outfits delivering lines like:

"Turn around, bend over, touch yourself and tell me you love me more than him"

So uhhhhhh nevermind 10/10 show actually it was perfect no notes!

One time I saw Hamlet at the Barbican and then waited outside afterwards for autographs from the cast. As Ciarán Hinds drew nearer and nearer down the line, I was trying to figure out how to concisely say that he was a wonderful Claudius and I loved him in Persuasion, which I watch every few weeks because it's so beautifully shot and his and Amanda Root's performances were so quietly impactful that's it's soothing to have on in times of high stress but of course when he got to me I just ended up blurting, "I WATCH YOU ONCE A MONTH!"

And I would not have blamed him if he went:

But after I explained myself, he just chuckled and said with convincing nostalgia, "Ah, that was during my sailor days."

Donmar Comet had its first previews and oh my it looks very snazzy indeed. Spoilers gleamed from first reactions under the cut

Easily the most modern set design I've seen for the show

Everyone's in contemporary alt garb, mostly black with hints of muted colour

The giant light up "M SCOW" sign in the back

What I assume is the comet is like, a big ol halo above the stage

In the corner there are these "Bride" and "Groom" masked characters. Unclear if these are actors or just dolls but they are weird in the best way

Apparently the bears from the rehearsal photos make sense in context

I have also heard that there is at least one (1) new Danatole kiss.

I really wonder if this increased anachronisms will be reflected in the arrangements but I'm still to hear anything besides that prologue clip

This production looks like it fucks severely I'm afraid

Oh my god, oh my god, I KNEW IT! I watched the shows put on by the Theatre des Vampires and was like this reminds me *so much* of two productions I saw in London, The Animals and Children Took to the Streets and Golem, which were both done by the troupe 1927. AND ITS THE SAME PEOPLE!!! 1927 did the animations for IWTV! I’m so happy for them! They’re such a cool troupe.
