✤ Exes Fics ✤
A series of posts with the top five fics of each category tag on ao3 by kudos plus five more hidden gems from that category! Remember to leave kudos and a comment on the fics you enjoyed to show your appreciation! You can find our other recs here.
- Top 5 H/L Fics -
1️⃣ got the sunshine on my shoulders by @hattalove [E, 124k]
five years ago, harry styles left his tiny home town to make it big as a recording artist. he didn't have much regard for what he left behind - a life, a family, and a husband, who woke up one morning to find him gone.
now, harry has everything he could possibly want: he's rich, famous, and adored by everyone he meets, including his boyfriend. but when said boyfriend proposes to him, he's forced to face the uncomfortable facts of his past - and louis, who's spent the last five years returning every set of divorce papers harry sent him.
(or, an au based on the movie sweet home alabama.)
2️⃣ Mine Would Be You by @crinkle-eyed-boo [E, 114k]
Louis blinks his eyes open, his eyelids fluttering as the room swims around him. He takes several gulps of beer once he confirms that he’s definitely not hallucinating, that the very first portrait Harry Styles ever painted of him is hanging on that wall.
Louis stares at the wall, his heart jackrabbiting in his chest as he realizes that there’s not just one painting of him, there’s five, the portraits lined up like they’re some sort of storyboard depicting the rise and fall of his deepest love. His greatest heartache. A pain that cut him so deep that he left the fucking country, severing all ties with his life in New York, now suddenly surrounding him as if he’d never left.
Fucking shit motherfucker fuck.
Louis returns to New York City five years after he left it – and the love of his life – behind. He didn't intend to see Harry again, but fate has a funny way of pulling them together, whether they like it or not. After making a begrudging truce, they both start to wonder: Would it be so bad if history repeated itself?
3️⃣ all the lights are full of colour by @infinitelymint [E, 26k]
So, fast-forwarding eight years from the day Harry met Louis, he is now a twenty-seven year old owner of one of the most up-and-coming eating establishments on the London restaurant scene, father of two wonderful boys and… separated from his husband. Now, that last part definitely was never a part of the original plan.
Or, Harry and Louis are separated, but for the sake of their two sons, they choose to spend Christmas together. It may just lead to a Christmas miracle.
4️⃣ The Shirt You Hate by @isthatyoularry [M, 15k]
“Soph,” Louis says to his female executive assistant. “I’m making more money than ever, and I have just realised that I have no one to spend it on.”
At thirty years old, Louis is past halfway to becoming a billionaire, and he needs to find the one. He literally stumbles upon his university sweetheart.
5️⃣ You’ve Got My Devotion (Hate You Sometimes) by lucythegoosey / @harryrainbows [E, 95k]
Harry was in the biggest boy band in the world. He was also one half of the best (or worst, depends on who you ask) kept secret relationship in the music industry.
Now, almost five years on, after One Direction has broken up, and Harry and Louis' relationship has as well, a video threatens to put everything at risk.
One determined Irishman, a massive publicity stunt and two begrudging exes are all it takes to bring One Direction back to life and maybe, just maybe, Harry and Louis' mangled love life too.
Or: Harry and Louis are forced to fake-date after an old video from when they were dating emerges.
HIDDEN GEMS:
💎 Wait For It by dimpled_halo / @comebackassholes [E, 119k]
“You’re doing it again.” Zayn’s voice breaks him away from his thoughts.
Louis furrows his brows. “What?”
Zayn waves his hand around. “You’ve got that dreamy look on your face. You’re thinking about the future love of your life, again aren’t you?”
Zayn is staring at him in a way like he’s daring Louis to lie so he could call him out on it. Liam and Zayn can read him like a book, making it hard for Louis to keep anything from them. Instead of trying to lie, he resigns himself and lets out a breath.
“I am.”
A How I Met Your Mother au with a better ending. Louis is ready to find the love of his life and when he meets Harry he thinks he's finally found them. Liam and Zayn have been together since college and are ready to take the next step in their relationship, except Zayn might be having doubts. And Niall is happy with no strings attached dating until a new employee at the bar they frequent walks into his life and makes him question his entire existence.
💎 pull me back together again (the way you cut me in half) by 28sunflowers / @vintageumbroshirt [E, 26k]
When trying to figure out who the love of his life is, Harry’s brain brings back a specific name from his past.
That’s why, a decade after a messy divorce, Louis opens his door to find his ex-husband standing on the other side, asking for a second chance.
Or a This Is Us AU starring Harry as Kevin and Louis as Sophie, but I selectively choose to use only some parts of what's cannon on the show.
💎 Love Gone Wrong by wordsnnotes / @quelsentiment [T, 18k]
Years ago, Harry and Niall left their rural town for the big city, while their respective boyfriends Louis and Zayn stayed behind at the ranch. Louis and Harry start an on-and-off relationship, but Zayn and Niall break off all ties. When Louis gets into a fight with Harry, he enlists Zayn's help to make things right with him, thereby putting Zayn in Niall's path again, and giving all of them a chance to work things out and start anew.
💎 don't you call him baby by @femstyles [T, 8k]
But now, eleven months later, as his Uber pulls up outside the bar, Harry thinks he can absolutely handle this. He's going to walk into Liam's birthday party where the ex-love of his life is also going to be and he's going to show Louis that he can be a mature adult about everything that’s happened in the last year.
Or the one where Harry is absolutely doing fine and is definitely not still hung up on Louis. Except he is.
💎 'Tis the Damn Season by zanni_scaramouche / @zanniscaramouche [M, 2k]
The door will open and he’ll smile wide and genuine at the people who raised him, his teary-eyed mother and rosey-face step-father. He won’t think about the cabin in the woods again until next December.

Practice 1
assignment 6, concept art - concept and storyboards
. Blog post 01
This assignment requires us to create a storyboard with 6-10 panels. We need to use these panels to effectively tell a story, and I believe the choice of the story is crucial.
I plan to illustrate the storyboard for the science fiction flash fiction story "Knock."
"Knock" is a science fiction short story by American writer Fredric Brown. It begins with a piece of Flash fiction based on the following passage by Thomas Bailey Aldrich:
"Imagine all human beings swept off the face of the earth, excepting one man. Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!"
Fredric Brown condensed this text into "a sweet little action story that is only two sentences long". "Knock" then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and build a more complete plot around them.
The first two lines are a complete story by themselves:
“The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door ...“
It was published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). The story was reprinted in The Best Science Fiction Stories: 1949.
Knock (short story) - Wikipedia
I believe that every storyboard creator should have the awareness that, when crafting a storyboard, the most crucial aspects are not the intricacy of individual frames but rather:
1. The coherence of the story
2. The readability of the story
3. The completeness of visual information
Novel media differs fundamentally from visual media such as movies, television, comics, etc., in that visual media possess the immediacy and concreteness of visual presentation.
For example, in a movie depicting a bar scene, the audience can even see the brand of each bottle. When a large amount of visual information rapidly enters the audience's brain, artists need to assist in filtering and guide the audience's emotions and feelings. Guidance methods include lighting, camera focus, composition, and so on.
I read a book called "framed ink", which is a tutorial book that teaches Visual Storytellers how to draw and tell stories.
Mateu-Mestre, M. (2010) Framed ink: drawing and composition for visual storytellers. Culver City: Design Studio Press.
Author Marcos Mateu Mestre in "framed ink":
Let's not forget that when we are talking about visual storytelling, the image is the vehicle and not the end in itself.
We cannot afford to get the audience stuck on a particular frame just because the drawing or the scene looks great without a specific purpose for it within the story.
Obviously we aim to produce the best quality art, but we should prioritize the following:
• What are we trying to say in our narration as a whole?
• What mood do we want our audience to be in throughout the story and at any given time within a specific sequence or shot?
What is the function of this moment within the story?
• How are we going to take our audience there?
• What in our drawing is contributing to the general statement?
• What can we leave out without changing what we are trying to say?
I think these points are the most important for Visual Storytellers.

that is all for now~

Jingyang Gao
Jingyang Gao is an animator, storyboard designer and animation director, who is currently based in London. Focusing on 2D animation filming, he also has a great passion for exploring different animation techniques and practices in stop motion animation, game and advertising.
Artist/ Director statement
This project is collaborated with the brand Daguoli and stands as one of the Chinese Festival and Solar Term Series. Daguoli is a very nice company based in Anhui Province, China, providing agricultural products and intending to improve the financial condition of local people. To promote their brand and concepts, we decided to make a series of Chinese festivals and 24 solar terms, using animation videos and illustrations. We combined some features of local constructions and customs such as animal hats, fireworks and persimmon tree to show the link between the company and local culture. Besides, creating cute children companied by an adult is considered to establish a kind and friendly image of the brand, emphasizing the feeling of family. 2D animation is also applied to get an easier understanding and broader acceptance in all ages.
Chinese New Year's Eve is a very important part of this series, as the Chinese Lunar New Year is the biggest festival in China. We’re very glad that our client is satisfied with the forms and contents we present in this video. We’ll continue to work with the company and complete the whole series in the future.

James Holden - Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities
“I wanted this to be my most open record, uncynical, naive, unguarded, the record teenage me wanted to make,” says electronic explorer James Holden of his generically unconstrained new album of rave music for a parallel universe 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities'. “I used to balance my clock-radio on a wardrobe to catch the faint pirate FM signals from the nearest city, dreaming of what raves would be like when I could finally escape and become a New Age traveller. So it’s like a dream of rave, a fantasy about a transformative music culture that would make the world better. I guess it’s also a dialogue with that teenage me.” Standing in contrast to the expanded band and live take recordings of its predecessor 'The Animal Spirits' (“Dramatic, colourful and Holden’s fullest-sounding work yet” 9/10 Loud And Quiet), Holden’s fourth solo artist album is more of a continuous sound collage, artfully juxtaposing audio worlds in his own inimitable manner, with a respectful hat tip to the pastoral classics of his early nineties youth (notable mentions to The KLF’s timeless 'Chill Out', and the sprawling radio soundscapes of Future Sound of London). But where his first wave forebears pilfered freely from the history of recorded music to date, Holden’s sample sources are custom generated, drawn from recordings of his own performances on the modular synth, keyboard, organ and piano plus the lesser explored drones of his childhood violin, cut-up bass guitar, overblown recorder, all manner of percussive trinkets and the serendipity of the odd field recording, as well as guest contributions from various members of the wider Animal Spirits live family: long-time touring companion drummer Tom Page, tabla-championing percussionist Camilo Tirado, multi-instrumentalist for hire Marcus Hamblett (here, on double bass and guitar) and saxophonist Christopher Duffin (on loan from Xam Duo and Virginia Wing). 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities' will be released via Holden’s own proudly DIY Border Community label on 31st March 2023, on double vinyl, CD, digital download and streaming. For the album’s distinctive hand drawn artwork and accompanying twelve page comic booklet insert, Holden called upon Amsterdam-based illustrator and musician Jorge Velez to help flesh out the visual component of the immersive fantasy world that is conjured up in 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities'. The result is a twelve panel storyboard (one per track) documenting the rave rituals of an alternative reality populated by magical creatures, which owes much to the pair’s shared love of the soothing retro-futurist colour palettes of the late and truly great French cartoonist Moebius (included in pdf form exclusively with Bandcamp downloads). Cover artwork and all illustrations by Jorge Velez. Instagram: @jvelezdrawings

Major Study W1- Inspiration
For my project I need to create 2 characters for the AR narrative. I have already created a character design for that. Now I need to do modelling for my character.
Here I found 2 character designers who create some stylized characters. Because for my work I am also planning to create stylized characters.
1. Charles Ellison
His Characters are stylized. It looks so simple and cute. There are some works which I got inspired p
Charles has worked in the animation industry for twenty years. Charles has most notably worked for DreamWorks Animation as Head of Modeling, overseeing the production of Trolls and its follow-up, Trolls World Tour. He also brings a long history of experience working as a 3D artist for DreamWorks movies like "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Rise of the Guardians," and "Abominable," as well as the popular trilogy "How to Train Your Dragon," where he contributed to the character and environment development for each entry. Charles has worked mostly as a Character Visual Development artist in more recent years, helping to bring to life a number of franchise characters for upcoming DreamWorks Animation and Netflix Animation projects.
2.Matias Zadicoff
Matias Zadicoffis a highly skilled character artist with two decades of experience in the computer graphics industry. Her work has been featured in games (including Marvel projects), movies (including work with Netflix Animation and Skydance Animation), multimedia, AR and VR apps, commercials, events, and web series.
Matias Zadicoff is currently based in Valencia, Spain, having previously worked primarily as a freelancer out of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the previous 17 years. He has also done on-site work for well-known studios in London and Canada. As a freelancer, he has worked on concept ideas, planning, character design, storyboarding, and entire production processes with a variety of global clients and studios. His main areas of expertise and focus are in the development of stylized character models and looks.
These two artefacts have inspired me because these are so simple and stylized. Here Iam planning to model stylized characters for my project.

Other artists with unusual style. Part 1
Malika Favre:
Malika Favre is a French illustrator and graphic artist based in Barcelona. Her style of works could be characterized by pure minimalism within Pop art and Op art, where it sometimes described as 'Pop Art meets Op Art'.
How does Malika Favre create her art?
She does this through experimenting with metaphors, positive and negative space, shadows, layers and many other key tools. Photography is a significant tool in this initial stage, helping Favre to extract colours, patterns and graphic elements.
What software does Malika Favre use?
This is what Malika Favre's answer for this question: ''I've stopped sketching by hand. I now sketch with Illustrator, sometimes in black and white, other times in color, to draft the composition and idea. The most important part of the process is to generate ideas. Everyone has their own way and there aren't any rules.''
What are some interesting facts about Malika Favre?
Favre was born with a severe case of strabismus, or crossed eyes. It was surgically corrected when she was very young, but she still sees perspective differently from the rest of us. “I can't see 3-D, for example, so if you give me 3-D glasses, I see blurry.
My opinions for this artist as her style is showing off, negative spaces mixed with positive spaces as she uses such bright and bold colours as well to show the complex to show the colours compared very well like white mixed with red and different shades of blues which is very well done for Malika.

Jack Teagle:
Jack is a freelance illustrator based in South West England. He has worked in a large variety of fields, including editorial, character design, storyboarding, poster/ product/ textile design, and worked as a cartoonist for Front magazine from 2010-2014. He wrote tutorials and worked as a columnist for Digital Artist Magazine Jack paints in his free time, and has exhibited his work worldwide. He is also a prolific self publisher, with his comics being translated into Polish, and Russian.
Jack Teagle comes from a town where more than 250 people applied for a single job at 'Pound Land'. Jack decided to become an illustrator instead. Jack graduated with an illustration degree from the university of Plymouth in 2009 and now works as an illustrator, comic artist and painter.
Selected Clients include:
Time to Change, VW, Adobe, Netflix, Apple, Universal Music, The Vlog Brothers, Iam8bit, Cartoon Network, Minecraft, Landyachtz, Converse, McSweeney's, Ohh Deer, Nick Jr, Bloomberg Business Week, FHM, Front Magazine, Evisu, The Economist, YCN, Research World Magazine, Anorak Magazine, Nobrow Press, Intercity Design, Havana Club Rum, ASP Industries, Daddy Donkey Mexican Grill, Illustrated Mind, Nexus Productions, Texas Observer, The Portland Mercury, Digital Artist Magazine, Future Publishing
Solo Exhibitions:
That's Life!- The R.A.G.E, Dublin, 2011
Zona De Combate- Dama Aflita Gallery, Porto, 2010 Dungeons and Desktops- Nobrow Shop and Gallery, London, 2010
My opinions for this artist, that his style is very cartoony as his own art works has lot of colours which is mixed with dullness, brightness and pastel-ish colours in his art works. I think he making lot of positive shapes on his art works with cartoony style.

Dan Hipp
Dan Hipp was born on 11 September 1978 in Fresno, California, USA. Dan is an art director and writer, known for Teen Titans GO! To the Movies (2018), Marvel Snap (2022) and Manga Motion Comics (2009).
Dan Hipp is a cartoon and comic book artist well known for his work with Warner Media, specifically DC Comics.
Prior to working as an artist, Daniel Hipp attended Edison High School in Fresno, California. He went into further studying at the University of California in Irving. Sometime after his schooling was done, Dan got jobs with big name animation studios, including Warner Bros. Animation, Random House, DC Comics, and, most recently, Cartoon Network.
As of right now, Hipp once specialized as an art director in Teen Titans Go!. His own personal art can be seen numerous times throughout the show, as many of the pictures and signs throughout the Titans Tower are Dan's creations. In addition, many Teen Titans Go! comic book cover is the work of Hipp's hands.
My opinions for this artist, that he also creates lot of positive spaces on his art works which I think that he does this to show the more details on the works so that people can see the whole page and not specific parts and he uses lot of bright colours that he used on his arts.

Mind-Blowing Video Editing App Can Replace Actors With CGI With a Simple Drag and Drop
Control C, Control V
An AI startup called Wonder Dynamics just came out with a new AI-powered editing studio called Wonder Studio, which they claim allows users to automatically replace real actors with convincing CG characters — with a simple drag and drop.
Gotta say: it looks pretty impressive.
"We built something that automates this whole process, animates it live, frame by frame, there's no need for mocap. It automatically detects actors based on a single camera," Wonder Dynamics cofounder Nikola Todorovic told TechCrunch last week. "It does camera motion, lighting, color, replaces the actor fully with CG."
Industry Madness
Of course, if your first thought, here, is: "hm, a tool like this might be absolutely terrible for the livelihoods of VX artists," you'd be forgiven. But Todorovic and the product's other creator, Tye Sheridan — yes, that Tye Sheridan, actor of "Ready Player One" fame — claim that the tool is designed to help artists, actually. (Never heard that one before.)
"This doesn't disrupt what they're doing, it automates 80 to 90 percent of the objective VFX work and leaves them with the subjective work," Todorovic told TechCrunch. "The beauty of AI is taking something so complicated and simplifying it."
"The goal all along was to make a tool for artists, to empower them," Sheridan added. "Someone who has big dreams doesn't always have the resources to manifest them."
Certainly, a rosy outlook on tech that, no matter how you shake it, is definitely replacing a human task.
But to their credit, the VFX industry, as TechCrunch notes, is notably overwhelmed — too many studios, making too many Marvel movies and/or Marvel knockoffs, fixing everything in post as they go. As GQ reported back in January, the majority of the film industry's VFX studios are booked out for years, and a tool like this could be a legitimately helpful means of bypassing the embattled industry's ongoing clusterfuckery.
According to TechCrunch, Wonder Studio comes with a set of premade characters, but the studio maintains that the preexisting characters are really just there for inspiration, or early-phase work like storyboarding. And soon, they say, they're hoping to build out into CG environments.
"This is a big first step," Todorovic told TechCrunch, "but the big picture is we want to have a platform where any kid can sit and direct films by sitting at his computer and typing."
All in all, congrats to these cofounders, as their platform seems legitimately impressive. And honestly? We're kind of looking forward to a TikTok feed flooded with Wonder Studio animations.

Old Nollywood aesthetics and fashion may be considered trendy today, but the films were not always so well-regarded. In the 90s and early 2000s, when these movies were made and watched in parlours across Nigerian homes as they were shot, straight-to-video, they were considered as bad entertainment, or ‘low culture’. To watch and enjoy Nollywood films was to celebrate mediocrity. But today, nostalgic young Millennials and Gen Zers are overlooking the jarring audio, grainy pictures, and sometimes hammy acting, to appreciate not only the grooming and style of the actors, but the original and diverse stories that reflect unique Nigerian experiences.
It was for this reason that sisters Tochi and Ebele Anueyiagu started Nolly Babes, a nostalgic Instagram account dedicated to celebrating the cinematic period’s women. Started in December 2017, their first post was of Nollywood’s biggest star Genevieve Nnaji; a still taken from 2004 film Sharon Stone In Abuja, directed by Adim Williams. Nnaji plays the titular character, a sexually liberated young woman who uses her beauty and charm to ensnare unassuming men into doing her bidding.
The account is an ode to the female characters of old Nollywood who were often portrayed as warning examples. The storylines were steeped in moral principles rooted in the patriarchal culture and the dominant Christian religion of Southern Nigeria. A large number of the female characters were considered immoral because they kissed other women, challenged men, smoked and drank, or wore mini skirts. Today, Nolly Babes and similar accounts are reimagining these women, taking their scenes out of the moralistic context of the films, and turning them into iconic feminist personas.
The first time Nollywood content seeped into the mainstream internet consciousness can be traced back to 2017 when videos of Nollywood’s favourite comedic duo Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme, better known as Aki and Pawpaw, rose to popularity due mostly to the influence of a now-defunct Twitter account @nollywoodroll ran by Nicole, a woman based in Brazil.
Their memes became the go-to reaction videos for expressing a wide range of emotions: joy, disappointment, sadness, frustration. The appeal was in seeing children making mischief or in adult situations – drinking beer and smoking cigars, wooing bigger women, or in oversized suits shouting instructions at people twice their size. Although both Ikedieze and Iheme were in their 20s in the early 2000s when most of the films were made, they mostly played children because of their body stature. By 2019, the memes had achieved such virality that brands like Rihanna’s Fenty would use them for social media clout.
Theodora Imaan Beauvais is the curator of Yung Nollywood, another archive of clips and stills from old Nollywood paying homage to its controversial female characters, after screenshotting moments from Nollywood she found “appealing or inspirational”. Yung Nollywood is remarkably distinct from Nolly Babes for its subtitling of the films’ stills from Nollywood films, something she attributes to Tumblr. While the idea to give witty captions to the actors’ facial expressions came from watching Netflix. “I thought, ‘If someone could describe Nollywood reactions in short phrases it’d be an art form on its own,’ and I became that someone.’”
In December 2019, Tochi and Ebele hosted a Nollywood-themed party in Lagos. Nollywood actor and musician Nonso Bassey attended the party dressed in a two-piece jean set and bucket hat, a signature look of the bad boy/alpha male archetype, and a role reprised multiple times by older actors such as Hanks Anuku, Emeka Ike, and Jim Iyke. Since that party, Nonso has attended social functions and premieres in outfits that make a nod to the fashion choices of that era of Nollywood. He insists, though, that he isn’t cosplaying Nollywood characters of that era. “I’ve always been attracted to the idea of merging old world charm with a new school approach,” he said.
The party caused a cultural stir amongst Nigerians and Africans both at home and in the diaspora – every other week, there seems to be a Nollywood-themed party held either in Lagos or London. Take for instance friends and business partners Imani Okunubi and Aseosa Uwagboe, two Nigerian-British kids who grew up in the UK. Nollywood was one of the ways they could connect back to their roots. That experience informs their event brand, Lasgidi to London, targeted at Nigerians living in the UK. “We wanted to create events that were reminiscent of the Naija hall parties (Owambe) we attended as kids, as we don’t want to see that culture die,” Aseosa said. Their next owambe is a Nollywood-themed party and guests are expected to come dressed in their “best nolly Y2K aesthetic”.
Below, the Nolly Babes sisters talk about creating and hosting the first Nollywood-themed party and the cultural moment it has inspired.
How did that first event come about – please take me through it, from the planning to how it turned out?
Nolly Babes: From the inception of Nolly Babes, we knew we had to throw a party. Fashion is a huge part of what makes Nolly Babes different from other Nollywood-themed pages and we knew we were the only ones that could set Nolly Babes as the dress code and have people commit as they did. There are many iconic Nollywood scenes and scenarios. The daughter meeting her evil mother-in-law, the ominous visit to the Babalawo, the campus stroll – just the mere mention of these scenes evokes images that have been embedded in the minds of our fellow Nollywood enthusiasts. The party scene is probably the most iconic of them all. Whether it’s in a club, a mansion while mum and dad are out of town (but coming home early to crash the whole thing) or poolside, the Nolly Babes party scene has its staples: mad music, dancing, and sick outfits.
December in Lagos is notoriously hectic. On each day, there are day parties, beach hangouts, concerts, and we just knew we had to be a part of it. Our flyer was the first thing we made sure was done right, and that has been replicated (but never duplicated) many many times. We went through at least six drafts of that until we got the flyer to be a realistic replica of the home video covers from the golden era. The DJs Kemi Lijadu and vIVENDII Sounds understood the assignment and played music from the Nolly Babes era. We’re talking Tony Tetuila, Mo Hitz, Wande Coal, Plantation Boyz… We curated a special cocktail menu: Genny Colladas, Jim Iyke’s Hard Lemonade, MargaRita Dominic, and our Lagos Island Iced Tea, in tribute to Nollywood stars Genevieve Nnaji, Jim Iyke, and Rita Dominic respectively. We had a video projection on the famous red wall at Nok showing a mashup of emblematic scenes. We were partying while seeing images of a young Jim Iyke dressed just like many of the attendees were dressed. It was magical! We have an event we’re planning in New York for the summer – it’s going to be a madness.
Did you envisage it becoming the cultural movement it’s now become?
Nolly Babes: We really didn’t. We hosted the party because we knew people were taking inspiration from our page for styling jobs and music video treatments, and wanted to give everyone a chance to recreate some of their favourite looks. Now every week we see people planning Nollywood-themed parties and sending people to our page for references. It’s awesome. Toke Makinwa even recently attended a Nolly Babes-themed party and she was dressed as a character we have immortalised – Regina Askia in President’s Daughter. She killed it! Even though the character wasn’t referenced, it was clear as day and it was awesome to see that she pulled it off! Honestly, when we see people really pay attention to detail and execute the theme well it’s so, so dope.
How has TikTok helped grow Nollywood's influence? You posted a scene from Girls Cot, the famous “you stink with poverty” clip on TikTok and it went viral and birthed these recreations even by non-Africans.
Nolly Babes: We’re just happy to see that another aspect of Nollywood that we champion – the iconic scenes and one-liners – is also resonating across the world. We see Nolly Babes as an archival work and as much as we focus on beauty and looks on Instagram, it’s nice to be able to point people in the direction of the scenes that are forever embedded in our brains. These are scenes we recreated in jest ourselves before there was even a Nolly Babes to begin with, so to see it catching on TikTok is exciting and a new frontier for us to fully explore. I think what distinguishes Nolly Babes from other Nollywood pages and what contributes to our TikTok success is that we really watch Nollywood movies. We grew up watching these movies and continue to do so now so we can capture those moments in films that the casual consumer or poster of Nollywood content might not.
What are your thoughts on Nollywood’s influence on the Alté scene? Music videos of artists such as Lady Donli and Odunsi nod to the aesthetic and fashion styles of that era.
Nolly Babes: Nollywood, and specifically the aesthetic we have shone a spotlight on, is probably one of the biggest influences in terms of visuals in that scene right now. I have never seen so many Eucharia (Anunobi) eyebrows on TV and we love it! It’s awesome to see our images and scenes being used in treatments and storyboards. If we’re being candid, we think it would be great if we got the chance to step into our stylist/creative direction bag and help with the execution of the aesthetic.
“The bottom line is really that Nolly Babes has brought what was already an international cultural influence to the modern social media realm with a new lens – Nolly Babes
How far do you see Nollywood's influence on pop culture, beyond Nigeria and Africa?
Nolly Babes: When we moved to New York we found our Dominican and South American friends had also grown up watching Nollywood films. The bottom line is really that Nolly Babes has brought what was already an international cultural influence to the modern social media realm with a new lens. Nollywood clips were online everywhere – but it was always in a comedic way. Aki and PawPaw are meme gods now, and that’s because their expressions transcend cultural boundaries. Black Twitter eats that stuff up.
Nolly Babes chooses to center the beauty, style, and iconic imagery, even the home decor with our #NollyDecor hashtag of the golden era of Nollywood. We share the makeup, accessories, fashion, iconic phrases, and scenes in a way that isn’t just comedic but inspirational and aesthetically groundbreaking. I see Nollywood being at the centre of this Y2K resurgence that is happening all over the world, from TV to runways and fashion collections. That era is coming back around and, this time, the Black experience is being revisited and centered in a way it wasn’t back in the late 90s and 2000s. (Black people) were always the originators of the trends and this time they’re tapping into the source and Nollywood, particularly the era we celebrate as Nolly Babes, is a great resource for that.
