TBR shelf
Over on Bluesky one of my friends was doing a “31 days of books on my to-read shelf,” listicle thing. I thought that was a good ‘un, so I started doing one too. I thought I’d port it over here. I’m really sorry but I’m tired and lazy and am only going to link to Amazon (all links are affiliate, I will earn some bitty percentage if you click through and use my links, etc etc etc) for these titles instead of doing the whole kit & kaboodle but if there are books I particularly think you should take the trouble to look up on your platform, I’ll mention that.
Like this one, for example:
DOWN AMONG THE DEAD, K.B. Wagers – this is the 2nd book of a 2nd trilogy (first trilogy here) about Hail Bristol, former gunrunner & current reluctant empress of an interstellar empire. These are some of the best books I’ve read this year, and I intend to finish the trilogy over the next few days, while wailing and gnashing my teeth at KB, who has apparently been GREATLY ENJOYING me doing so over on BS. They were apparently waiting with bated breath for me to get to the end of the first book of this trilogy, and my screams evidently did not disappoint. :)
Hannah Ritchie, NOT THE END OF THE WORLD: “Surprising facts, dangerous myths, and hopeful solutions for our future on planet Earth” – someone recommended this, I don’t remember who, but clearly I thought their opinion held some weight so I picked it up. :)
MC Vaughn, ROMANCING MISS STONE, a title I wish I’d thought of :) This is technically a research read for me, but with that title I’d have picked it up anyway.
Barbara Hambly, ONE EXTRA CORPSE, oh man I forgot about this one I gotta read it soon! I love her murder mysteries and I bet–there IS another one out! OMG. BRB, throwing over all my plans for the day to read. (I am now halfway through reading this and have the next one in my Kobo basket.)
THE ANTI-SOCIAL SEASON, Adele Buck – this is also a research read, and I have actually read it since putting it on my TBR list ten days ago. It’s cute, as was the first book in its series. Actually, it is cute, but it’s not just cute. There are some really great, frustrating family dynamics in this book and they’re really well realized and extremely sympathy/empathy-inducing. Buck did a good job.
THE HANDS OF THE EMPEROR, Victoria Goddard – 90% sure somebody, possibly Stephanie Burgis, recommended this one. I have no other information about it right now. :)
WHEN THE WAVE COLLAPSES, Norah Woodsey – again, almost sure I picked this up on a recommendation or review that sounded interesting.
RATTLESNAKE WIND, Lilith Saintcrow – I mean it’s Lili. :)
THE MERCY OF GODS, James S.A. Corey – you know, I haven’t actually finished the last 3 books of The Expanse, so I’ve got no business picking up another JSAC book, except…I totally did. Maybe next year I should have a goal of re-reading/finishing The Expanse and reading this. :)
THE MIDNIGHT QUEEN, Sylvia Izzo Hunter – 90% sure Stephanie Burgis recommended this one too.
I have no idea how it is I haven’t read this yet, because her books are a “drop everything, including work, and read immediately” for me, but A SORCERESS COMES TO CALL, T. Kingfisher
(Actually, I looked it up and it came out RIGHT before Worldcon, so honestly I probably didn’t even see it arrive, which is no doubt how I missed it. I’ve got to finish KB’s books, but this might be the one to end my year on bc after all, total emotional destruction is always a good way to end the year, right?)
Also, I don’t have to have read it to recommend it as a “go look on other sites for it if you haven’t read it either” book.
ALASKA INFERNO, Lolo Paige. I confess 97% of the reason I picked this one up was to see how annoyed I would be by the Alaska stuff, but I have 3% hope I won’t be. :)
That’s as far as I’ve gotten on BS so I’ll do more later. :)

About Shinigami Senta
While the translation would equate to “Death God Center”, you’ll have to trust that the owner of this Bittybones adoption center is nothing but kind! By reading this mini-guide on the center itself, we hope that you’ll be visiting us soon!
Shinigami Senta is run by Aki and co-run by Lolo (& Tai), owners of the attached Lolo & Tai’s Health Clinic [for Monsters, Humans, and Bitties] on the right side. This center is not connected to the housing, but is nearby in case of emergencies.
The main center is adoption only. Walking in reveals a fair-sized waiting room and front desk that doubles as a small shop for Bitties offered there at the center. There’s two doors on either side; the one to the right leads to the Bitty areas, the left leads to Lolo and Tai’s Health Clinic (which we’ll get to in a moment);
First, the Bitty areas.
Walking through the main door leads you to the Bitty adoption area. A small hallway takes you to a larger side room where the Bitties are kept. Bird-types, like Littlewing, Gladys, and Herron, are kept in another side room, where they can fly free. Please ask an associate before attempting to enter the aviary.
Normal bitties are placed in cages around the room during certain times of the day, but might also be in one of the play rooms. You can find your Bitty that way or, if you have one in mind already, request the Bitty you want and spend some time with them in a private play room!
We here at Shinigami Senta encourage adopter and adoptee interactions before adoption. It dissuades most impulse buyers who might adopt than ditch, saving the Bitty some heartbreak... Hopefully, it’ll only impress them upon you more, so that you might adopt a wonderful companion!
The front desk, as previously mentioned, doubles as a small shop, run by fox-hybrid Kaon. He assists new people to the center, greets all, and also sells things that might help a Bitty settle better into a home. For example, there are toy/plastic mini-knives for Bellaberry/Chara Bitties (only get if they are the only Bitty you’ll own!!! Even a fairly well-behaved Chara can find a way to kill with such an object), hammocks for bird-bitties to roost in for the night, and even a few stands (for bird bitties) and playsets for their amusement! Snacks of Bitty-sizes are also available and Kaon can offer you a magazine of various, Shinigami Senta-approved items, including clothes!
You’ll be acquainting yourself with Kaon a few times by the time your first visit is over and if you return, you’ll be seeing him again, so do be sure to chat with him a bit! I’m sure he’d enjoy the company.
To the left, you’ll enter Lolo and Tai’s Health Clinic. This one body, two monster pair oversees the health and care of monsters, humans, and bitties alike! Lolo and Tai (that huge “tail” of hers) specialize in mainly monster care, but since reaching the surface, have become proficient in human-care as well. Helping her with Bitties is her very own Sunstone Papy bitty! (You’ll often hear her call him “Sunshine”, though.)
The waiting room is where you’ll first end up either way, with the check-up rooms dotting the front; further back are for bitties and the second floor is for human and monster care. Bitties might end up there as well, if things are particularly serious.
Front desk manager is a human woman by the name of Elise. She can help set up appointments, get you in a waiting room as fast as possible, or simply answer some simple healthcare concerns you might have. Those bigger, more in-depth ones are best answered by one of the doctors there!
Each owner usually patrols around their side, helping out those in need or for a small chat. If there is a pressing matter you need to address with either one of them, just ask those working at the front desk; from there, they’re a call away!
Oh, and a fun fact for the day... The heights of the ones who work at the Center!

Could I get a bitty matchup for my oc Char? Char is not short for Charlotte…It’s short for charbroiled. Char was caught in a housefire and suffered severe burns, as well as several other injuries, and lost an eye. Some days she is perfectly fine, other days she hurts too much to do much of anything. Most days are more on the fine side with some minor aches and pains. Her hair is currently a jewfro as it’s still growing back, and the poor girl has curly hair. She is 32, shows evidence of having lost a lot of weight quickly, with brown hair and eye. (The other is sometimes a normal glass eye, sometimes sparkly, sometimes creepy) She still cares more about others and loves helping out where she can. Often volunteers at Fire department events to talk about being stuck in a fire and what she did wrong. She has extreme self esteem issues from the excessive scarring, and makes self deprecating jokes. She is also sassy and snarky with friends and family, and will make regular puns about herself especially. On low energy/high pain days, she likes reading, movies, and video games to distract herself. On normal days, she enjoys going for walks and meandering hikes.
I most certainly can try my best!
my recommendation to you is a Toro!
Toros can be affectionate an understanding and will store away needed items such as burn cream and snacks in their stomach and chest cavity for whenever you need it! they also know what it feels like to be half blind or have a sensitive area so they will be very cautious and gentle when you need them to be- not only that but you said you dropped a lot of weight right? they can help give you or make a healthy diet to regulate your weight loss and gain! (they can also grow to large hights- about as big as a person which is great because they can also help out with things around the house within your older age-)
my next recommendation is a Lolo!
This bitty is extremely sensitive to Temperature chainages and smells! they can be very alert and tell you if something is wrong! they love to help around the house and as long as your willing to carry something thats cold and long lasting their very much willing to go on walks on hot sunny days! they are also very willing to learn and teach children and other people about the importance and safety about fire safety! yes they are cuddly and physically affectionate but they can hold off if you need it- often times deciding to grab items that you request! (a Lolo will also love to play games and such with you that are non physical or bodily straining)
And lastly- A SugarBob!
Yes they can be mischievous, maybe a bit too curious and adventurous- but they wont judge your looks at all- hes a big confidence booster and will praise you to the high heavens if need be- Sugarbobs can love to learn about new things and sounding smart so they will absolutely be willing to follow your teachings and help teach others- hes also sassy and will indeed sass back with you playfully the entire day- just don't blame me if you get rosted a lot though XD These bitties are also very alert to others moods and their emotions so he can most likely tell when and if you need a break- help or just a quiet day! also he's absolutely willing to beat you in videogames-(Walks outside might be a bit difficult because of his sweet scent attracting things to eat him but if you have scent represents and a special 'no bite' bitty lather that i can provide it can work out perfectly fine!)

I was wondering if there might be a Toro, Lopy, and a Lolo that might be interested in a new home, and don't mind a rather large family. I have a large array of bitties that are like family but then there's also all the bitties offered at the shop. We have plenty of safe spots for if anyone gets overwhelmed and I'm always happy to find a way to help any bitty feel more comfortable and at home. -Saiyuri
oh definitely!
But please be mindful that our bitties have sensitive ears so they will require a safe quiet space to go too- any one of my Toros, Lopys and Lolos would be very happy with a large family! but i do suppose i could find a few specifically-
This. Big Old Baby is a Return after he got too big- Hes actually hard of hearing and won’t need a quiet safe space like the other bitties because he’s used to the level of noise of a large family-
His Nickname is Pillow! :D

Hi Mama Shift, I have a concern about my Lolo and Lopy bittys.
It's not round that time to happen just yet, especially since Duke is still a Princeling, but i'm concerned about how Benny and Charmie will take Duke's teenage years as Vasil bitty teens develop a prey drive they'll take out on bitty sized vertebrae.
My concern is that the beginning period will involve them learning to hunt which will cause interaction with the wild life that may invoke, uh, squeamish reactions.
I don't want to mentally scar my Lolo and Lopy bittys and I don't want to cause a rift in Benny's and Charmie's relationship with Duke in his teenager years. I was thinking of removing them from the learning process stage entirely but because of how attached he is of them Duke would want their approval on his kills so im not sure.
They're your bittys so any advice on how to help them deal with it when it comes will be appreciated.
Oh- this really is a problem, hmmm. . .
My suggestion for you is to explain to them early on, they can be rather understanding especially since their instinct based as well- they can understand the situation- the best method is to slowly desensitize them to any gore that you might think may happen during this time- start out slow- cooking being the best method by using meat, skinning animals, plucking feathers, flaying fish in front of them, all good ways to start! the next would be gutting, and the next after would have been to get them to cook the meats with you- it will be a rather tough process, knowing they themselves are a 'prey' type bitty, but since he has some growing to do it shouldn't be too bad!
they may have squeamish reactions still sure, but they will be able to hide the discomfort of it, and grow used to it

A kitsune brings in a variety of nesting materials, healing supplies, and treats, a gentle smile on her face. "I hope you don't mind a little supply delivery including sweets for you and the bitties. I can't wait to see all the bitties you have!"
Oh their going to love it!~
I think the Lopy and Lolo’s especially will enjoy the nesting supplies and the Calf’s and Toros will definitely dig in and share the treats with the other bitties of the shop!
Thank you very much for your donation! ^^
