Two terrible streaming shows:

BIENVENIDOS A EDÉN (WELCOME TO EDEN) Season 1 (2022): Weak, sour, contrived Spanish thriller about a group of attractive young people who are brought to a remote island for what they think is a launch party for a new drink called Blue Eden, only to discover that they're prisoners of a high-tech millennialist cult whose leaders intend to evaluate each of them for recruitment — and will murder anyone who won't play ball or tries to get away. It's clear what the show wants to be (THE PRISONER by way of THE BEACH), but it's a complete misfire: It keeps tipping its hand too soon and escalating too quickly to build any meaningful suspense (which it then tries to make up for by being unpleasantly mean), the characters are mostly boring, and Eden's youth group sleepover vibe means the show is rarely sexy enough to make up for its many lapses in logic and plausibility. (If your reaction to the absurd premise is, "That's … not how cults work," this is not the show for you.) Typically of nerd shows, it also hates its few Black characters. The sole point of interest is Mayka (Lola Rodríguez Díaz), the blue-haired trans girl who operates Eden's pervasive surveillance system, and she's not a main character. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Lil bit, but you have to wait for it. VERDICT: Will have you muttering "Just get on with it already!" at least twice an episode. The second season, which I haven't yet seen, is apparently even stupider, but gayer with more sex.

HYSTERIA! (2024): What's worse than Hollywood's hackiest horror hack, Mike Flanagan, being paid the big bucks to smarmily nerf an ever-growing list of genre classics? How about Flanagan's even-less-talented sibling Jamie somehow parlaying their brother's success into a Peacock deal for this incredibly off-putting new horror-comedy that asks, "What if the Satanic Panic of the '80s were REAL?" If, like me, your response to that question is, "Bitch, read the room," you'll hate this infuriating, reactionary show, set in 1989, about three teenage nerds (Emjay Anderson, Chiara Aurelia, and Kezii Curtis) whose attempt to become cool by founding their own heavy metal band puts them at the center of an outbreak of ritualistic, possibly supernatural evildoing in their suburban small town. Simultaneously mean, dorky, and smug, the plot never makes a whit of sense, it thinks it's much cleverer than it actually is (which is worse than if it were just stupid), and it eventually dumps any remaining scraps of story coherency in its determination to have everything both ways; its treatment of its few Black characters is also very uncomfortable even for shitty nerd media. (It's MUCH worse than WELCOME TO EDEN, which is already pretty bad.) Extensive use of fish-eye lenses to create an off-kilter vibe (sometimes for multiple scenes in a row) gets old in a hurry and may leave you fearing there's something wrong with your glasses. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Non. VERDICT: Unbearably hackish in every way. How can the Flanagans be stopped before it's too late?
