Notre-Dame de Vie

Comme le savent les lecteurs habituels de ce Blog, je suis un habitant épisodique de la petite ville de Mougins, à deux jets de pierre de la ville de Cannes, qui revendique le titre de ''La ville des fleurs et des sports élégants'' ! Rien que ça ! Mais Cannes est hors-sujet : je veux vous parler de mon cher Mougins, ''mon'' village perché, en forme de spirale d'escargot, plein de gens gentils et de jolies petites rues étroites –qui étaient sensées défendre les habitants en cas (déjà !) d'invasion par les ''Sarrasins'' et qui les protègent (?) aujourd'hui des ardeurs estivales du réchauffement climatique.

Trois collines structurent ce site si cher à mon cœur (ici, on dit ''les Colles'', du latin collis) : sur la première, le village lui-même, ravissante silhouette qui se détache sur le ciel généralement d'un beau bleu soutenu. Puis ''les Colles'' proprement dites, la plus haute (276 m d'altitude ! Un sommet des Alpes ! Mon cher ''Cantelaube'' en occupe le sommet, à l'ombre des ruines d'une tour de guet romaine et des restes d'un petit ''castrum'' qui surveillaient la Via Julia , une sorte de ''Nationale 7'' de l'Empire romain, si l'on veut. La colline Notre-Dame de Vie constitue le 3ème ''sommet''. C'est d'elle dont je voudrais vous parler aujourd'hui, pour nous extraire de la grisaille environnante, de la tristesse du temps (par ailleurs si bleu, si intense...) et de la laideur de l'environnement politique--

Dans des temps que les moins de 90 ans ne peuvent pas avoir connus, il existait en France une trentaine de lieux réputés ''bénis'' où, disait-on, les bébé morts-nés ou morts à la naissance (et il y en avait beaucoup, ''in illo tempore'' !), revenaient à la vie juste le temps de recevoir le baptême. Et c'était sérieux, ça : l'église catholique avait posé comme théorème que un bébé mort sans être baptisé ne pouvait accéder au Paradis, mais devait se contenter (?) d'un séjour éternel ''dans les Limbes'' , lieu mal défini et un peu glauque où il n'était pas ''en punition'', mais n'atteignait pas le bonheur éternel. Le désir des parents était donc fort, d'arriver à ce que leur bébé soit baptisé (NB – c'est de là que vient la tradition catholique d'un baptême donné dès le jour-même de la naissance ou le lendemain).

En cas de pépin à la naissance, il restait donc aux pauvres parents la possibilité de porter le corps du bébé jusqu'à un des ces ''Lieux-de-Vie'' et de le voir ''renaître'' le temps de recevoir ce sacrement –soit une poignée de secondes. On peut admirer comme la dureté de la vie dans les temps anciens savait entr'ouvrir des portes vers des espoirs qui redonnaient du goût à la vie. Nos ancêtres, en plus d'être pieux, étaient de vrais sages. A partit de l'an Mil, donc, des familles attristées se sont donc mises en route, de toute la région, vers ce lieu de renaissance et de salut éternel. Le plus souvent à dos de mule, sur des chemins inexistants, sans ''stations-service'', sans ''motels'', sans... rien, en fait.... et les archives citent un cas (vers 1200) venu d'Arles dans ces conditions. On préfère ne penser ni à l'odeur ni à l'état du corps du bébé, enserré dans des linges... bien serrés...

A l'arrivée, le curé de l'église (il y en avait toujours un : c'était mille ans avant que Vatican II ne vide les séminaires !) desserrait les linges, et les gaz accumulés se dilataient tout d'un coup, entraînant un mouvement d'ouverture brutale des bras et des jambes... ''Le bébé bouge ! On le baptise vite... Au Nom du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit, ainsi soit-il !''. On l'enterrait sur place et on repartit, avec la joie (relative) du devoir accompli : un ange de plus au Paradis... Voilà la jolie histoire de Notre-Dame de Vie, terre d'espoir, de foi, d'amour, de sauvetage, de salut et d'éternité.

Dix ou douze siècles plus tard, autres temps, autres mœurs, Lord Guinness, de son nom complet Group Captain Thomas Loel Evelyn Bulkeley Guinness OBE, le célèbre magnat de la cervoise tiède, est passé par là, en visite sans doute chez son ami Lord Brougham, le ''Père'', si on peut dire, de Cannes, en tout cas son inventeur. Tombé amoureux-fou de ce site si beau, il entreprit une ''négo'' tendue avec le Maire d'alors... et réussit à acquérir le droit de bâtir là sa demeure éternelle... à condition de ''ramasser'' tous les restes des petits bébés enterrés là depuis des siècles, et de leur donner une sépulture éternelle digne de leur âge...

Ainsi fut fait : il existe un tombeau commun où a été regroupé tout ce qui a été trouvé dans ce petit cimetière, même si on peut imaginer que ce qui reste d'un nouveau né mort à Arles il y a mille ans ne pèse pas lourd. La tombe est pourtant émouvante, dans sa simplicité sous des romarins : ''Ici reposent les restes des petits chérubins...''. Et plus loin, le tombeau où reposent pour l'éternité Lord et Lady Guinness, imposant bloc surmonté d'une merveilleuse croix de Saint Jacques sans doute ramenée d'Espagne : le lieu est situé sur le ''Camino italiano'' du Pélérinage de Compostelle. Tout ici, respire le calme et la sérénité... Et c'est comme ça que les choses doivent être.

Pourtant... dans un petit coin de cette antichambre du Paradis que n'a pas réussi à polluer Picasso (malgré pas mal d'efforts pour y arriver !), on peut voir une petite tombe soigneusement cachée sous la végétation, anonyme, discrète (presque trop). Elle a, bien sûr, attiré mon attention et excité ma curiosité. Enquête soigneusement faite dans les archives, il semblerait bien que ce ne puisse être que le lieu de repos éternel de... la secrétaire de Lord Guinness, qui a remplacé les petits chérubins, un peu comme, disent les économistes, ''la mauvaise monnaie chasse la bonne''. Sic transit gloria mundi. Mais, faute de preuve, je n'écris pas ''secrétaire'' en italique.

J'aime ce lieu, où je vais souvent m'asseoir sur un petit banc de pierre, pour rêver, méditer, ou... lire mon journal. Je voulais en partager la beauté absolue et la douceur équivoque avec vous, Amis-lecteurs. Dès demain, après cette escapade, nous devrons replonger dans le chaudron de la médiocrité dramatique du temps qui est, hélas, le nôtre...

Donc mardi (et peut être mercredi si la circulation est insupportable comme elle l'a été aujourd'hui... où j'ai dû m 'arrêter à Montélimar : m'entêter aurait été trop dangereux) pas de ''Comprendre demain'' sur vos écrans. Gloria Guinness was a Mexican socialite and editor of Harper’s Bazaar (1963-1971). She was named one of the ‘most elegant woman in the World’, by Eleanor Lambert the founder of the Met Gala. Gloria was best known for being a close friend to writer Truman Capote.

Gloria Alatorre was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. Her father was a journalist and her mother who came from a Spanish colonial landowning family from Jalisco, who made a fortune in sugar. Her father was persecuted during the Mexican Revolution and died in exile due to health complications in San Antonio, Texas when she was five. Due to the Cristero War the family left and moved to Mexico City.

Gloria was married four times, to men who were all well-off. Her third marriage was to royalty, when she married the grandson of King Faud I of Egypt. She married Thomas Loel Guinness in 1951 and she had numerous lovers during the marriage. She owned wealthy apartments all over the world including in Manhattan’s Waldorf Towers, owned a 350-ton yacht, an apartment in Paris, a farm and a mansion in Florida.

Truman Capote named Gloria one of his ‘swans’, a group of his wealthy female friends who inspired him for characters in his book. She met Capote in the 1950s and he would often be with her during family trips and when attending parties. Truman wrote, "...for the most part, the ultra-rich have literal minds, and they find excessive wit dangerous, even subversive. That was a lesson Gloria never cared to heed." Even though she was one of Truman’s close friends, she wasn’t portrayed in the series, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

Gloria died of a heart attack in Epalinges in 1980, aged 68.

America’s Most Expensive Home Finally Sells!

In 2015, the sixteen-acre Gemini estate in Manalapan, Florida, was the most expensive home in the U.S. Its unique positioning on a barrier island provided an Atlantic Ocean beach in the front and an Intracoastal Waterway boat dock for yachts in the back. Originally priced at $195 million, after a number of reductions it has recently sold for $94 million.

Owned by the Ziff brothers who inherited the family property from their American publishing magnate father, William Bernard Ziff, Jr., the home had been in the family as a private getaway for over forty years and housed a stunning orchid collection of their mother. Heavily planted with tropical trees, shrubs and flowers and insulated from prying eyes by its acreage, it was almost like being on one’s own private island.

Built in the 1940s for the Lambert pharmaceutical family and designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth, the estate was eventually sold to Loel and Gloria Guinness as a winter retreat. It was purchased by the current owners, the Ziff publishing family, in the 1980s and underwent a four-year expansion and reconstruction that was completed in 2003 including construction of a tunnel under A1A to access the guest house and boat dock on the Intracoastal.

Even the access tunnel is cozy as another living area with its own fireplace. Year-round good weather and the option for almost every outdoor sport possible, both the exterior and interior have been designed for family life.

The mansion measures a staggering 62,220 square feet and is located on the island’s oceanside with 1,200 feet of beachfront. There is also a seven bedroom home named Mango House, a manager’s house with four apartments, and two four-bedroom beach cottages with private quarters for extended family and friends. Overall, the property has approximately 84,988 square feet of living space with 33 bedrooms and 47 baths. Not a cent was spared on the highest quality available in materials, appliances, finishes, architectural restoration or design.

Grounds are thoughtfully planned with both activity and relaxation in mind. A sports complex offers a half-basketball court, tennis court, a practice golf course with two greens, a swimming pool surrounded by cultivated jungle, a treehouse with a slide for the children, a miniature golf course, a wide deserted beach and a boat dock on the Intracoastal with ocean access.

Roger Vivier (1913-98) was a designer of luxury shoes, and is credited with creating the stiletto heel. He designed for several couturiers, including Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s, but notably for Christian Dior from 1953-63. He is the only one of Dior's collaborators permitted to have a credit on the final design - 'Christian Dior crée par Roger Vivier' - which is marked inside every shoe.

Vivier worked in elaborate and expensive materials including silks, pearls, beads, lace, metal threads and jewels.

Esta es la insólita vida de la olvidada 'socialité' mexicana Gloria Rubio: aristócrata alemana, princesa egipcia, amante de embajadores, supuesta espía nazi, esposa de un integrante de la célebre familia cervecera y amiga de Truman Capote. Una de las socialités más importantes del mundo en los años cuarenta y cincuenta del siglo XX fue mexicana. Su nombre: Gloria Rubio Alatorre, mejor conocida por su nombre de casada: Gloria Guinness. No se sabe a ciencia cierta si nació en Guadalajara o en el puerto de Veracruz, pues no se ha localizado documento que lo compruebe, solo se sabe que en agosto pasado habría cumplido 102 años de vida. Gloria Guinness es más reconocida fuera de México por su vida social que aquí, donde sólo un puñado de personas han tratado de reconstruir sus pasos. Al decir del periodista de sociales Pedro Luis de Aguinaga, Gloria Guinness era tapatía, en cambio para el también periodista y tío de la actriz Ana de la Reguera, Mario de la Reguera, era jarocha. Hija de un periodista pro maderista asesinado en la Revolución, cuando ella tenía cuatro años, y de una costurera veracruzana, Gloria nació el 27 agosto de 1912 y alguna vez declaró a la revistaHarper’s Bazaar (de la que fue editora entre 1963 y 1971) que de su madre había heredado el gusto por la moda y el porte. Al respecto, cuenta De la Reguera una anécdota que refuerza su teoría sobre sus orígenes jarochos “por la manera tan desenfadada como se comportaba”: un día, Loel Guinness le pidió que se apurara a vestir porque, de lo contrario, llegarían tarde a una cena que tenían, ella le contestó que no tenía qué ponerse, a lo que él le recriminó que tenía el clóset lleno de ropa. Al llegar a la casa de sus anfitriones y quitarse el abrigo de mink que la cubría, ¡oh sorpresa!, vio que estaba desnuda y, atónito, volvió a colocarle la prenda, no sin antes escuchar que le objetaba: “¡Te dije que no tenía qué ponerme!”. Alta, refinada y elegante, Gloria Guinness fue “la mexicana más extraordinaria que he conocido”, recuerda Elena Garro en su libro Memorias de España 1937 (Siglo XXI, 1992), y quien la conoció durante su exilio en París después de la polémica en que se vio envuelta Garro por el movimiento estudiantil del 68. Guinness se casó cuatro veces: su primer esposo, recuerda Garro, fue un alemán de apellido Scholtens residente en México de quien, agrega De la Reguera, a las primeras de cambio se divorció. Contrajo segundas nupcias el cuatro de octubre de 1935, en Kensington, Londres, con el conde de Fürstenberg-Herdringen, que en el nombre llevaba los de sus antepasados: Franz-Egon Maria Meinhard Engelbert Pius Aloysius Kaspar Ferdinand Dietrich (1896-1975); con él tuvo dos hijos: Dolores Maria Agatha Wilhelmine Luise, quien nació un año después, y Franz-Egon Engelbert Raphael Christophorus Hubertus, nacido en 1939, quienes por su padre recibieron el título de barón y baronesa. Garro recuerda: “Cuando empezó el desastre germano (la Segunda Guerra Mundial) huyó a Portugal para salvar a sus hijos. Solo llevaba sus alhajas. De allí pasó a Madrid, en donde Fakrí, el primo hermano del rey Faruk e hijo del embajador de Egipto en Madrid, se enamoró de ella. Gloria se vino a París”. Elena Garro recuerda que en su departamento de París “iban a visitarla las hermanas del rey Faruk: la princesa Faiza, esposa del sha de Persia, que estaba en París tramitando su divorcio, y la princesa Fawzia, casada con un diplomático egipcio, rubio y buena persona. Las dos eran bellísimas, de piel muy blanca, cabello negro y rostros perfectos. A principios de los años setenta, leí en los periódicos que a Fawzia la había matado su marido y luego él se había pegado un tiro en la cabeza. Vivían en Los Ángeles, acosados por la miseria. Ya estaban viejos y ambos trabajaban de sirvientes, a pesar de que Gloria Rubio, fiel a su amistad, les enviaba dinero. “Las dos hermanas deseaban que Gloria se casara con su primo Fakrí. Era la mejor manera de solucionar su vida. Pero Gloria, que había guardado siempre su nacionalidad mexicana, estaba en un grave dilema: su pasaporte había caducado y el consulado se negaba a renovárselo. Eso significaba para ella la deportación a Alemania, en donde su marido estaba preso, y el abandono de sus niños que se hallaban en un colegio de Suiza. ‘Nuestra Gloria Nacional’, la llamaban en el consulado. Ella estaba aterrada, pero llegó Anselmo Mena, el encantador Anselmo, del grupo Contemporáneos, que era nuestro cónsul en Londres, le extendió su pasaporte mexicano”, rememora Garro en su libro. El nieto del rey Fuad I de Egipto y, por tanto, sobrino de la princesa Fawzia de Egipto (la primera esposa de Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Sha de Irán) y el rey Faruk I de Egipto, el príncipe Ahmad Abu-El-Fotouh Fakhry Bey (1921-1998) fue su tercer esposo; con él se casó en 1942. “Gloria iba bien como princesa egipcia, pues sus rasgos sólo la hacían comparable a Nefertiti”, agrega Garro. Para sus críticos Gloria Guinness era una descarada cazafortunas. Mientras estuvo casada con el príncipe Fakhry, fue amante del embajador del Reino Unido en Francia, Duff Cooper, por esa razón, dice Garro, “Lady Diana Cooper, la mujer más guapa de Inglaterra, detestaba a Gloria Rubio”. Después de que Gloria Guinness huyó de Alemania al inicio de la Segunda Guerra, se instaló una breve temporada “en el Madrid neutral”, como ya lo ha mencionado Garro. Allí conoció a Aline Griffith,aristócrata española nacida en Estados Unidos que más tarde se convertiría en condesa de Romanones. Con el seudónimo de Butch, Griffith fue espía de la OSS, la agencia estadunidense antecedente de la CIA, y a partir de los años ochenta ha escrito algunos libros sobre sus misiones secretas: El espía viste de rojo (1987), El espía fue al baile (1991) y El espía viste de seda (1992). En ellos, Griffith ha revelado que cuando estaba adscrita en Madrid durante los últimos años de la guerra supo que “la glamorosa Condesa von Fürstenberg” también era espía pero de las fuerzas del Eje y que tenía una estrecha amistad con importantes nazis como Hermann Göering y el mismo Adolfo Hitler. La verdad es que Madrid no era del todo neutral, pues el general Franco era adepto a las ideas del Führer, y si el esposo de Gloria estaba encarcelado era por oponerse al Tercer Reich. Además, el historiador Rupert Allason ha acusado a la condesa Griffith de inflar las historias que cuenta en sus libros con tal de que éstos se vendan más. La CIA, por su parte, ha evitado desmentir o si quiera comentar algo sobre el caso de la condesa Griffith. Por todo eso, los años de la guerra fueron difíciles para Gloria Guinness. En París, escribe Garro, Gloria “vivía en un palacio enorme, sin criados y sin dinero, vendiendo sus joyas poco a poco. Por las tardes iba a visitarla. Entraba al enorme vestíbulo de losetas de mármol blancas y negras cuya soledad y silencio me impresionaban. De pronto la voz de Gloria me llamaba: ‘Arriba, rubita’. En su lujosa habitación, tendida en la cama, me recibía. Gloria aparecía en las portadas de Vogue como la mujer más elegante del mundo. Manuel González y González, su protector y ministro plenipotenciario de México, se había ido de París y ella se encontraba desamparada. Yo me sentaba en una sillita baja, cerca de la ventana, y desde allí admiraba su belleza, fina e indescifrable como una estatuilla egipcia. Después, llegaba la embajada inglesa a rendirle tributo, con el embajador Duff Cooper a la cabeza. Yo escuchaba la conversación de Gloria en un inglés perfecto, a veces cambiaba al alemán y a veces al francés. No sólo era inteligente al hablar sino en sus movimientos y modales. Pero me sobrecogía su angustia, aunque ella no dijese nada, excepto cuando estábamos solas y entonces inventaba venganzas infantiles contra aquellos que le estaban haciendo daño: ‘¡Tú lo verás, rubita!... ¡Me compraré una casa preciosa, haré fiestas magníficas y no los invitaré nunca! ¡Nunca!’”. Entonces volvió la bonanza. Su cuarto y último esposo fue Loel Guinness (1906-1988). Se casaron el siete de abril de 1951 en Antibes, cerca de Cannes, después que él enviudó de su segunda esposa. Era miembro del Parlamento inglés y pertenecía a una familia de nobles irlandeses en la que hubo políticos, ministros religiosos y banqueros, y aunque la rama de su familia era propietaria de la famosa cerveza que lleva su apellido, él se dedicaba a los bienes raíces. Muy seguramente por esa razón, los Guinness tenían seis casas en diferentes países. Según enumera De la Reguera, las casas eran: un departamento en las Torres Waldorf, entonces las más caras de Manhattan; una casa de campo del siglo XVIII llamada Villa Zanroc en Epalinges cerca de Lausanne (con una bolera en el sótano); un yate de 350 toneladas con el que surcaban el Mediterráneo en el verano; una casa de siete pisos en la Avenida Matignon, en París, decorada por Georges Geffroy; un criadero de caballos en Normandía: Haras de Piencourt, cercano al que tenía el barón Guy de Rothschild; una mansión de Palm Beach, en Lake Worth, Florida, con el lago a un lado y la playa del otro. También tenían casa en Acapulco, cuando el puerto era la meca del jet-set internacional. Gloria misma había decorado esa casa, incluso algunos de los muebles los diseñó y se enorgullecía de que todo fuera mexicano “excepto mi esposo, que es inglés”, decía con peculiar sentido del humor. Uno de los habituales en la casa de Palm Beach era el célebre escritor Truman Capote, quien con su característica lengua viperina recuerda: “Lo que no entiendo es por qué todo el mundo decía que los Kennedy eran tan sexys. Sé mucho de pitos (he visto un montón) y si hubiesen empalmado todos los de los Kennedy habría salido una buena. Solía ver a John cuando estaba con Loel y Gloria Guinness en Palm Beach. Yo ocupaba una pequeña casita para invitados con su playa particular, y a veces él venía para poder nadar desnudo. ¡No tenía nada de nada! Y Bobby lo mismo; no sé cómo tuvo todos esos hijos. POMFRET, Conn. — If you think you picked the biggest pumpkin at the patch, think again. A Connecticut man just set a local record for the heaviest pumpkin at the Topsfield Fair in New England.

The winner of the All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off is 2,294.5 pounds.

To put that in perspective, one of the lightest cars on the market, the Mitsubishi Mirage, only weighs 2,018 pounds. Seeing a Mirage rolling down the highway is a lot less alarming than watching a 2,294.5-pound pumpkin roll by, of course.

The mountainous plant looks like its seconds away from splitting at the seams, it is so big. But, it has some fierce competition.

Worldwide, the Guinness World Record for Heaviest Pumpkin is held by Mathias Willemijns from Belgium and his 2,624.6-pound pumpkin.

The man behind this particular whopping weigh-in is Alex Noel from Pomfret, Connecticut. He snagged a $8,519 prize for winning the competition.

“I’ll sleep better tonight than I have in 18 years,” Noel told CNN affiliate WBZ.

Perhaps we can all sleep a little better knowing that Loel’s award-winning squash is safe and sound in its own enormous pumpkin-sized house in the fair’s Fruit and Vegetable building.

New Englanders can drop by to see all the monstrous winners of the fair’s Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off through October 14th.
