Gas Stove Service Near Me: Your Ultimate Guide to Reliable and Affordable Solutions
Gas stoves are a vital part of many households, providing an efficient and cost-effective way to cook. Whether you're preparing a family meal or entertaining guests, having a fully functional gas stove is essential. However, like any appliance, gas stoves require regular maintenance and occasional repairs to function optimally. If you're searching for "gas stove service near me," this blog will guide you through everything you need to know about finding the best services in your area, the benefits of professional maintenance, common issues, and what to expect from expert technicians.
Why You Need Gas Stove Service
Gas stoves, while durable, can experience wear and tear over time. Regular use can lead to minor or major issues, which, if left unchecked, may compromise the safety and efficiency of your stove. Here are a few reasons why routine service and maintenance are crucial:
Safety: Gas leaks and malfunctions are serious safety hazards. A professional service can identify and fix potential problems before they escalate.
Efficiency: A well-maintained stove ensures optimal gas usage, preventing wastage and saving you money on energy bills.
Longevity: Regular service prolongs the life of your gas stove, ensuring it remains a reliable part of your kitchen for years to come.
Performance: Maintenance helps ensure your stove operates at its best, reducing cooking time and improving the overall cooking experience.
Common Gas Stove Problems
Before diving into how to find the best "gas stove service near me," let's first explore some common issues you might face with a gas stove. Identifying these problems early can help you know when it's time to call a professional.
Ignition Problems
If your stove isn’t igniting or it takes too long to light, it could be due to a faulty ignition switch or clogged burners. This is a common issue that requires professional attention to fix.
Uneven Flame or No Flame
Gas stoves rely on a consistent flame to cook food evenly. If the flame is too weak or nonexistent, it may be due to clogged burners or an issue with the gas supply.
Gas Leaks
If you notice a sulfur-like smell (often described as a "rotten egg" odor), you may have a gas leak. This is a serious issue that requires immediate professional intervention.
Burners Not Heating Properly
Burners that don’t heat up as they should can make cooking frustrating and time-consuming. This could be due to a buildup of grease or a faulty burner.
Strange Noises
Unusual noises like popping, clicking, or hissing while your stove is operating could indicate an underlying issue. Professional gas stove technicians can quickly identify the source and repair it.
Pilot Light Issues
If the pilot light keeps going out, it might indicate problems with the thermocouple or gas supply line. A technician can troubleshoot and resolve the issue to ensure proper functioning.
How to Find the Best "Gas Stove Service Near Me"
When you're looking for "gas stove service near me," it’s important to find a reliable and trustworthy company. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to ensure you choose the best gas stove service in your area.
1. Research Local Companies
The first step in finding the right service is researching companies in your area. Look for businesses that specialize in gas stove repairs and have certified technicians. A quick search for "gas stove service near me" will yield several results, but it’s important to take your time to review each option.
2. Read Online Reviews
Customer reviews are a great way to gauge the quality of a service. Platforms like Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) provide insights into other customers' experiences with local service providers. Look for consistent positive feedback, especially related to professionalism, timely service, and repair quality.
3. Verify Certification and Experience
Gas stove repair is not something that should be handled by just anyone. Ensure the technicians are certified to handle gas appliances. Certification ensures they are knowledgeable about safety protocols and the latest repair techniques.
4. Ask About Pricing and Guarantees
Price transparency is important when choosing a service provider. Be sure to ask about their pricing structure and whether they offer upfront estimates. Additionally, inquire if they provide any guarantees on their work. A good service company will stand behind their repairs and offer warranties.
5. Emergency Services Availability
Gas stove problems can occur unexpectedly, often requiring immediate attention. When choosing a gas stove service near you, check if they offer emergency or same-day services. Companies that provide quick responses in urgent situations are invaluable.
6. Word of Mouth Recommendations
Sometimes, the best way to find a reliable gas stove service is by asking friends, family, or neighbors for recommendations. They may have had good experiences with local services and can point you in the right direction.
Benefits of Professional Gas Stove Service
Once you find a reputable "gas stove service near me," you’ll want to understand why it’s worth hiring a professional rather than attempting DIY fixes. Here are some benefits of choosing professional gas stove service:
1. Safety
Gas stoves, if improperly handled, can be dangerous. Professionals have the expertise to identify and fix potential hazards, ensuring your home remains safe. They’ll check for leaks, inspect the gas line, and repair faulty parts that could cause issues down the line.
2. Cost-Effective
While it may seem cheaper to try and fix your gas stove on your own, DIY repairs can often lead to more expensive issues in the long run. Professional technicians can identify the root cause of a problem and fix it correctly the first time, saving you money on future repairs.
3. Time-Saving
Professional services save you time by quickly diagnosing and repairing issues. This is especially helpful if you have a busy schedule and can’t afford to be without a working stove for long.
4. Expertise and Knowledge
Certified technicians have years of experience working with different gas stove models. Their expertise allows them to handle even the most complex issues with ease. Whether you have an older model or a modern, high-tech stove, they’ll know exactly how to fix it.
5. Long-Term Peace of Mind
Regular maintenance from a professional service not only keeps your stove running smoothly but also gives you peace of mind. You can cook with confidence, knowing your appliance is in top condition.
What to Expect During a Gas Stove Service
If you're scheduling your first service, you might be wondering what to expect. Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens during a professional gas stove service:
1. Initial Inspection
The technician will start by thoroughly inspecting your stove. This includes checking the burners, gas lines, igniters, and other components to assess the overall condition of the appliance.
2. Diagnosing the Problem
If you're experiencing specific issues, the technician will perform tests to diagnose the problem. For example, they may check for gas leaks, blockages in the burners, or faulty wiring in the ignition system.
3. Cleaning
During the service, the technician may also clean your stove. Grease and food particles can accumulate in the burners and vents, causing the stove to function poorly. A deep cleaning ensures better performance and prevents future issues.
4. Repairs and Part Replacement
If any parts are worn out or broken, the technician will recommend replacing them. Common parts that need replacing include igniters, burners, gas valves, and thermocouples. They’ll have most parts on hand, so repairs can often be done on the spot.
5. Testing
After repairs or maintenance, the technician will test the stove to ensure everything is working properly. This includes checking the flame size, burner functionality, and ensuring there are no gas leaks.
6. Safety Checks
Finally, the technician will perform a series of safety checks. This includes inspecting the gas line for leaks, checking the ventilation system, and making sure all connections are secure.
Maintaining Your Gas Stove Between Services
While professional gas stove service is essential, there are steps you can take to maintain your stove between appointments:
Clean Burners Regularly: Grease and food particles can block the burners, leading to uneven heating or weak flames. Clean them regularly to prevent buildup.
Check for Gas Leaks: Periodically inspect your gas stove for any unusual smells or signs of a leak. If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas and call a professional immediately.
Use the Stove Properly: Avoid overheating the burners or using the stove for purposes it wasn’t designed for, such as heating your home.
Schedule Regular Maintenance: Even if your stove seems to be working fine, schedule routine maintenance at least once a year to ensure all components are functioning optimally.
Conclusion
Searching for "gas stove service near me" is the first step toward ensuring your stove remains in excellent condition. By finding a reliable service provider, you can avoid common problems, enhance your stove’s performance, and enjoy peace of mind knowing your appliance is safe to use.
Remember to research local services, read reviews, verify certifications, and ask about pricing and guarantees before making your decision. Professional gas stove service offers numerous benefits, including safety, cost savings, and long-term reliability. With regular maintenance and timely repairs, your gas stove will continue to serve you well for years to come.
So, if you notice any issues with your gas stove or it's been a while since your last service, don't hesitate to contact a trusted "gas stove service near me." Your stove—and your kitchen—will thank you!

I'd like to vent about my service industry job for a moment, feel free to ignore. I'd put a break if the fucking mobile app would let me, but I can't get it rn, so I'm sorry.
As a preface:
Already having 10+ years food service experience, I slid into this job with practically no training needed, and have now been here for a year, busting my ass and doing far more than I ever should have between prep, cleaning, service, etc. (and just to side-gripe, never gotten any sort of raise or recognition from the men with the money.)
Despite her admittedly having some kind of gross hot takes and political opinions, between going through our late ADHD diagnosis and treatment together and having similar job/general life experiences, I've become decent friends with my current manager. Unfortunately, part of our shared experience is being/having been food service managers for a place with ignorant, stingy, trash-men as owners.
In a commercial kitchen it is a legal requirement here (and in most places) to have a ventilation hood, and is something that a single notification to the local fire marshall would incite immediate closure and steep fines for. There are exceptions to this rule, but that's for places like Smoothie King where they don't even as much as bake cookies in-house.
We are not a Smoothie King.
We utilize a full gas setup for a double frier, flat top grill, stove top range, and two ovens, in a kitchen that may be smaller than some of your living rooms.
When using these kinds of equipment without a functional hood, not only can it raise the temperature to disgustingly, nauseatingly-high temperatures, it also allows for smoke, airborne grease particulates, and toxic fume byproducts building up in the kitchen, and depending on various circumstances and floor plans, creep into customer areas.
Well, my manager and I had noticed and notified the owners starting at least two weeks ago that ours was making a lot of noise that did not seem normal or okay.
We were blown off, mansplained to about 'moisture on the fan belts causing a little noise now and then', and a lot of other bullshit excuses to just ignore it.
This kept going day after day, progressively getting worse every time we turned it on. I could not hear anyone over the noise it was making unless I left the grill side altogether. I feel like this goes without being said, but this makes busy service more difficult than it needs to be.
Yesterday, New Years Eve, the main owner was there while it made more Jurassic Park sound effects and still blew it off while the manager and I both stared at him. I finished my shift out and left.
Later, come time for dinner service, it finally happened.
Here are excerpts from the text conversation I had with the manager:
"The hood motor completely died during dinner tonight. That sound we’ve been hearing was the fan bearings shattering. They’re trying to still do brunch tomorrow. We will close after, stay closed until Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday at the earliest. HAPPY NEW YEAR, enjoy your day (days?) off! 🤡🔫"
..."I've been on and off the phone with them while they tried to rig it with the spare intake motor. The bearings completely destroyed it tho. I said "So no brunch?" and he said we'll still do brunch, just with the door open and a fan. I said "No one should work that grill without a hood, it's illegal for a reason." ..."
"He seemed flabbergasted that we might not want to work without a hood. ..."
"This is the most comical, theatrically written moment of karmic retribution, and they're completely ignoring the bad omen staring them in the face lmao"
"CMON JUST BE COOL GUYS, THINK OF THE BUSINESS."
Of course it devolved into meme trash:
So since I have a child to feed and they are the type to opt towards spending thousands of the shop savings on unnecessary music equipment for events that don't pertain to us, but can't use that same pool for preventative equipment maintenance, repairs, or lost wages due to negligence of said maintenance, I went in for my opening shift this morning.
Ending up just being me watching this disrespectful, mansplaining, stoned out of his mind, "I'd vote for Obama again" performative liberal stutter and flounder, arguing with the manager about whether to be open or closed, making very insensitive comments about "needing the money too" and "no one wanting to work anymore" (paraphrasing, and a lot of comments hyper-situational to a few of our individual circumstances) until he broke and called it.
Now we're closed indefinitely because of the holiday timing. 🙃
I'm awaiting the update call from the manager - seems they stayed behind to continue yelling at one another, but she said she wants to help me fix up my resume.
Fuck this place, this job, this industry, and capitalism, and uh, thank you for reading I guess?
Anyway, want some shitty fan art done of your favorite ships or ocs? Proceeds go to this temporarily out-of-work nb parent lol

7 Refreshing Bubble Tea Shop Design Options
From a small tea stand in Taiwan in the early 1980s, the bubble tea market has become a global favorite. The diverse flavors of blended beverages and the milk tea craze have also led to a booming consumer market. In that case, now is an excellent opportunity to start a bubble tea or boba tea business. Aside from the suitable location, you can consider these bubble tea shop design options that will attract more customers and make money.
1. Pastel Aesthetic
Create a calming environment inside your bubble tea shop with a high proportion of white mixed with a few pastel colors. It provides a pale and subdued tone that leaves a lasting impression on the customers. These colors are timeless and used throughout different interior design projects. Pastel tones will make your shop airy and spacious when applied to interiors.
The bar counter decorated with geometric patterns complements the muted color tones. This technique truly reflects the unique personality of the shop owner.
2. Solid-Color Walls
From varied pastel colors, let’s move on to bold accents in solid blue color. This color scheme perfectly matches the white portion of the room and the wooden flooring and seating area.
Placing an accent shade in the ceiling and doors makes the beverage preparation and ordering area stand out. Also, make sure to add some indoor plants. Plants as accent pieces soften spaces or create a particular expression.
3. A Fully-Equipped Bubble Tea Kitchen
One essential in bubble tea shop design is having the right equipment. The proper setup guarantees you can continue making extraordinary beverages and other products without being disturbed by untimely repairs or sudden breakdowns. Efficiency in serving meals allows customers to get their orders quickly and increases your profit.
For a fully-furnished bubble tea kitchen, you should have the following equipment:
Electric or gas stove
Tea maker
Juicer
Shaker
Sealer
Water boiler
Tea bucket
Fructose dispenser
Refrigerator
Freezer
Ice maker
Multiple sinks that your local health department approves
4. Ordering Area with a Creative Design
If your store offers bubble tea takeaway service, you can also creatively design the ordering area. Make it as bright and welcoming as possible. For example, on the wall near the ordering area, create a punch-in seating area or dining area, arousing customers’ curiosity to explore your store.
Incorporate the use of cash registers in your design. You can also use the blank area of the counter to promote your shop by placing logos, light boxes, flyers, and so on.
5. Open Shelving Units
For small stores, open shelving units are essential. Aside from increasing storage options, open shelves let you constantly change your layout. Your dishes and other shop items become your decor, allowing you to switch up your style more often. With this design, you can quickly move around your items, add some pop of colors, or make it as simple or complex as you want.
6. Cool Decals and Stickers
In planning your bubble tea shop design, especially when you have limited space, use every nook and cranny of the room. For example, place some cool decals to brighten up the blank walls. It can be cartoon characters or photos of bubble tea. You can also feature catchy quotes and phrases to create a happy vibe all over the place. This way, your customers will love the home-like atmosphere and enjoy their favorite bubble tea.
7. Dedicated Seating Area for Customers

Customers often leave right after purchasing bubble tea. However, if your store has a distinctive and attractive design that encourages them to stay longer, it increases the chances of additional purchases. If you have enough space, consider adding a seating area that matches your shop’s theme.
You must ensure the seating is comfortable and includes options for two, four, or more people. Customers visit the bubble tea shop to relax and converse with friends. Some customers also conduct business talks in shops like these. Your choice of furniture depends on your tea shop’s layout, theme, and size.

These seven bubble tea shop ideas promise an enticing environment for customers and enthusiasts. Using your in-store space efficiently is necessary to provide customers with a delightful experience. Unleashing the Full Potential of Your Kitchen with Commercial Kitchen Equipment
Introduction
Whether you're a business owner or a home chef, there are certain things that every kitchen needs. So I put together this list of tips for getting the most out of your commercial kitchen equipment by ensuring it's in top condition and ready for action.
Looking for a Few Simple Ways to Improve the Overall Success of Your Kitchen?
If you're looking to get your restaurant up and running, it's important to have a well-equipped kitchen. With the proper equipment, your kitchen will be more convenient than anything else. It may seem like a daunting task at first. Still, invest in high-quality commercial kitchen equipment now (and continue investing in new pieces throughout the years). In that case, your restaurant will succeed much faster than if you had started with cheap options.
Regardless If You Are Already in Business or You Are Thinking About Opening a New Restaurant, There Is One Thing That You Can Be Sure Of, and That Is That It Will Take a Lot of Money to Get Started
Regardless if you are already in business or are thinking about opening a new restaurant, there is one thing that you can be sure of, which is that it will take a lot of money to get started.
The equipment for a commercial kitchen can range from $20,000 to $400,000 depending on the type and size of your kitchen. The cost of supplies for running a restaurant may vary as well, from store-bought food products to fresh foods from local farmers' markets. In addition to these expenses, there is also an ongoing need for labour which includes hiring skilled cooks/chefs as well as dishwashers/cooks assistants etc., so this can add up quickly when starting on your own!
You Will Need Various Tools, Appliances, and Supplies, Including High-Quality Commercial Kitchen Equipment Such as a Gas Stove
You will need various tools, appliances, and supplies, including high-quality commercial kitchen equipment such as a gas stove.
A gas stove is essential because it's what cooks your food on. In addition, you'll also want to consider an oven for baking, broilers for grilling and roasting meats or vegetables, microwaves for reheating leftovers quickly (and keeping them warm), dishwashers for washing dishes after cooking meals in the kitchen; these are just some of the many types of commercial kitchen equipment available today!
Outfitting Your Kitchen Means Spending More Money Than You'd Like, but It Can Be Inexpensive
If you've got a little extra money to spend and want to outfit your kitchen, there are countless ways to save. First, look for deals on commercial kitchen equipment. You can find great deals on new items by shopping around at different retail stores with similar products in stock and asking them if they'll match their competitors' prices. You may also find used equipment refurbished or repaired by its previous owner.
Second, consider renting instead of buying. For example, if you need to figure out whether or not an espresso machine is right for your business yet but know that it would make sense for years down the road (and therefore don't want its cost), consider renting one from a local cafe instead! This way, when you get tired of using this item—which happens all too often—you return it without paying anything extra out-of-pocket and still save money overall!
A Restaurant Without Adequate Commercial Kitchen Equipment Is Not Complete Because Those Are the Tools of the Trade
The difference between commercial and home kitchen equipment can sometimes be clarified, but it's important to know the difference. Home kitchens are usually smaller and simpler, with less space for storage or food preparation. They can also be more difficult to clean than a commercial kitchen. On the other hand, commercial kitchens have many more tools available to them that allow them to prepare larger quantities of food quickly and efficiently—allowing you to serve more daily customers without relying on your own hands! Therefore, the right equipment is essential to meet and exceed your needs so your restaurant becomes successful in no time!
High-Quality Stainless Steel and Cast Iron Cookware Are Worth the Investment
Stainless steel and cast iron cookware are durable, long-lasting options used on the stovetop or in the oven. If you're looking for a way to upgrade your kitchen equipment without breaking the bank, consider investing in high-quality stainless steel or cast iron cookware.
Stainless steel is known for its durability and easy cleanability, making it an excellent choice for anyone who likes eating healthy food but wants to save money on kitchen equipment. Cast iron also offers many advantages over other cooking pans—it's incredibly versatile and can be used on any stovetop or burner (including induction), making it extremely useful for those who like experimenting with new recipes!
High-Quality Equipment Will Make All the Difference in How Effectively Your Kitchen Operates
High-quality equipment will make all the difference in how effectively your kitchen operates.
Quality equipment is safer, easier to clean and use, and more efficient and reliable than inferior products.
Multiple people may use a commercial kitchen at once or over time (e.g., open 24 hours per day). The quality of the cooking surface is important because it affects everyone who uses it: from chefs to line cooks, from dishwashers to prep workers, from janitors who clean up after meals are served—everyone benefits when they have good-quality equipment!
Conclusion
Now that you have the basics of commercial kitchen equipment and how it works, it's time to start thinking about how much of an investment this might be for you. There are many options if you want to find something within your budget, but remember that these things will last a long time, so take your time purchasing something before looking around at different stores and prices.

Ruso, North Dakota
Tiny Ruso, ND is allllmost a ghost town! But thankfully other people have found this place interesting enough that I have some info about it to draw from! From several sources! Yay! Let’s get going and jump into this tiny town on the verge of becoming a certifiable ghost town.
So, according to Wikipedia Ruso was founded in 1906 and incorporated in 1909. It was either named for the first two letters in the words “SOth RUssia” which was where many of the settlers came from, or after a Russian word meaning “South of us.” At the 2010 census only 4 people lived in town - and that was 9 years ago. That makes Ruso the least populated incorporated place in North Dakota.
Let’s check out this cool stone barn that caught my eye right away!
Turns out, according to this source, that it’s the old jail and later blacksmith shop!
This article shed a lot of light on Ruso. To summarize - two people lived here in winter and four in summer (as of early 2018). They had a mayor. He was mayor for 30+ years. He used to be a rural mail carrier and moved to Ruso in 1956 - before my own dad was even born. He spent the winter in a bigger small town but as soon as summer came he always went back to Ruso. He loved it. And in the article he said “If I ever leave I’m sure that will be the end.” And he was almost right.
That article also said that there were grocery stores and meat market in Ruso way back in the day. Like, the 20s. And, just after incorporating, the town had over 100 people and a doctor and a newspaper! Lots of towns didn’t have those things back then. Also a repair shop, a grain elevator (or 5, according to another source), a park, a place to leave horses, and later a place where someone built 14 foot fishing boats! And according to another source this town was on a railroad line so there was a depot and everything too, and a cream station, and a gas station and mechanic shop. This town had everything!
And the park? Now it’s a slough, apparently - although on maps it’s still the official city park. But back in the 30s, according to a woman interviewed in the article, they used to play down there because it was so dry. When the rains came back and the slough filled back in it would freeze in winter and they’d use it as a skating rink!
The little bit of taxes people pay go to two street lights, sewage, and garbage pickup. They can’t afford snow removal. Ouch! No wonder two people live there in winter.
Sadly, a follow up article soon appeared announcing the death of the mayor who kept the town going for so long. He was still mayor at the time - all 3 residents voted for him. 100% turnout. Now that the mayor is gone, there aren’t enough people to fill the city council (3 people are needed - the town now only has 2 full time residents). That means the city probably won’t be a city for long.
This looks to be an old house. I have no info about this one.
Happily, another follow up article came out last summer with good news for Ruso! It said that the town was supposed to get a 100% population increase! From 2 to 4. And they’re appointing a new mayor! Yay! So there is hope for Ruso after all.
Anyway, you can see there’s a big field in the middle of town here. According to this website there used to be a baseball diamond there where they would have games.
And I’m thinking that this used to be the school.
It seems someone may be turning it into a house? I hope it gets more love in the future, it’s looking kind of shabby. Such a cool building though!
A comment by “Vivian” on this website describes the school and more: “I was born in 1925 and grew up in Ruso. My parents and many of my family are buried in the Ruso cemetery. The school was large enough to accommodate 2 years of high school when I was growing up. There was a big bell that was rung to signal the start of a school day. We kids would take turns ringing it. It was great fun as the bell was so big, you would pull down on the rope and be pulled up into the air by the return swing of the bell. You could hear the bell all over the county. We lived a few miles away, so usually my brothers and I walked to school. Sometimes we would take one of the horses though. And in the winter sometimes Dad would bring us in the cutter sleigh. In the winter Mom would make ice cream and we would bury it in the snow bank to eat at recess. Growing up there was an experience. We cooked & heated the house with a wood stove. We had kerosene lamps & candles for lighting and there was no indoor plumbing. Mom did the wash once a week, boiling water on the stove and washing everything using a washboard and soap. The clothes were hung out on a line to dry – in the winter she’d bring the frozen garments in to finish off drying by the stove. Bath time was once a week too & followed the same process – boil the water on the stove & use it to scrub yourself while sitting in a big washtub in the kitchen.”
Down the overgrown street and around a corner is the old Lutheran church!
And someone has moved in, at least around the church. They’ve brought animals and lots of junk but hey, it’s lived in!
Thanks to street view you can see what this place looked like in 2008. You can see the outhouses and junk and a big scrapped bus that says “Huntley Project Red Devils” - that made me go back to my MT days because Huntley Project is in MT!
Back to present day, a donkey!
And another donkey! And look in the background it looks like someone is growing flowers.
Again, according to this article, the Lutheran church closed in 1997 for good. It never did have running water - only an outhouse. Sadly, the basement of the church was used to house chickens and then a dog got in there and killed 80. The “city” passed a law that said no vicious dogs allowed in town.
Before the church closed they went out in a classic way - a lutefisk dinner. One of the ladies interviewed in the article said: “That was about the last activity...We had a snowstorm before the supper. What a mess. There was no water at the church. All I got done was hauling water in and carrying water out. We made it but that’s the last supper we had.”
Going back to the 2008 street view shots - here it is before anyone moved in.
And there’s that bus again. On this website there was a comment from David Seaman that had some information about it: “according to my ex-father in law from velva the bus has been there since the late 80s early 90s it had broken down between ruso and velva and was left and never repaired or retrieved and was towed by some local farmer to its current resting place. i have no way of verifying this but he’s been in velva all his life since 43 so i would imagine its probly right along the lines of what happened.”
And this comment from the same website by someone named Lisa had alot of insight about Ruso: “My mom was the last postmaster at Ruso’s post office, which was located in what was the old bank building (also a residence). The post office closed sometime in the 2000s. The sign that the author speaks of that mentions 1981 was in commemoration of Ruso’s 75th Anniversary Celebration. It is a shame that the church grounds are in the shape that they are in now – it’s not necessarily the fault of the few residents (most of whom have no connection to the church), but rather the person who purchased the property and is using it as a junkyard. My great-grandfather was a carpenter and helped build the church and the furnishings inside. I remember going to bridal and baby showers and anniversary celebrations in the church basement as a young girl. I also remember softball games being played in the baseball diamond. The stone building across from the baseball diamond was the old jail. Both of my grandfathers and many other relatives attended school in Ruso. My grandmother worked in the bar that Deputy Sheriff Bob speaks of and I remember hearing about the fire. Ruso used to have 5 grain elevators in its heyday. I often wish I could timetravel and visit Ruso during its height! The Ruso Record newspaper is available for viewing on microfilm at the State Archives in Bismarck and has a lot of interesting information from the busy days of the town.”
Heading back around to the “main part” of town.
I believe that, according to this article, Ruso’s two full time residents live here. I think this is the bank/post office that they are remodeling.
Beside the bank there used to be a gas station. It burned down many years ago - 1980, according to a comment from this website. “Mike Pflipsen owned the gas station and mechanic shop next to the Post office. The sign that is referred to was in front of his gas station and the post was part of his filling station area. He also owned the property where the ball diamond is on. Mike ran the gas station for many years and was a bachelor his whole life. In 1980 his gas station burned down while he was sleeping inside. Somehow he was able to get out and he lived with my father, Hubert Pflipsen of Max, until he went into the Nursing home in Garrison. I have since purchased the lots from him and visit Ruso every year when I come back to ND.”
Street view 2008:
An interesting comment by Bob Roggenbuck from this website about the bar in Ruso which either was in this building or one nearby. “I was a deputy sheriff in McLean County in 1977 -1978 working out of Garrison when I and another deputy stopped in Russo at the bar on a bar check, we went on to Butte and were called back to Russo, because the bar was on fire. It burned to the ground that night as we watched and could not believe that less than a hour earlier we were in there visiting we the people in the bar. It was rebuilt, but the place was never the same. It is so sad to see the town in the shape it is now.”
Further down the road is this place. Someone mowed a path to it. So I walked down.
Well this place has seen better days!
I spy a water heater...and a lot of junk.
Further down the bath continued into the trees and it was kind of magical. All overgrown and green.
Looking across from this house, an old building and an old garage.
Here’s the storefront. No idea what it used to be.
And the garage.
Think there’s anything in there?
Looking back toward the occupied home in town.
I’m guessing this used to be someone’s house, long abandoned now.
I was delighted with all the information I was able to find on Ruso! What a delightful little town in such a beautiful area of ND!
On my way out I stopped for this photo. The sunset and angle of the receding storm clouds made this thistle glow.
So pretty!
And to see me out of Ruso - this pretty hawk. It was still partially raining when I got this photo so it’s not great. But he sat still for me for a moment!
Ruso, you are so neat little town! I hope you can maintain your population or even grow so you never become unincorporated!

Some Tips on Choosing a Professional Appliance Repair Service
Home appliances make your lives easy and more convenient. You practically need them in everything that you do every day. The kitchen, for example, is where you usually find a lot of home appliances that help you live an easier and more convenient life. You have a refrigerator to keep your food fresh, an oven toaster, microwave ovens, and a stove to help you in making food preparations. You also have dishwashers to keep your kitchen utensils, and kitchen wares clean. There are also many other home appliances that you can find around the house that make your daily lives more livable and comfortable. You have air conditioning units, washing machines, and even television. Home appliances bring a great deal of help in your daily lives that is why when they start to show signs of malfunctions or if they suddenly crash, you must immediately call for the services of a professional home appliance repair in Chatham County.
Given the importance of these home appliances in your life, you cannot afford to live a day without your beloved hairdryer or your air conditioning unit particularly during the summer season. That is why at the first sign of trouble in your air conditioning unit, you need to immediately call an AC repair in Pooler, GA, or HVAC repairs in Savannah, GA. You don’t want to risk a day in your life without these things. That is also the main reason why you must be very careful and wise in choosing whom you call for help. Here are some of the tips that you can use when looking for professional appliance repairs in Effingham County and surrounding areas.
Be diligent in your search for a professional appliance repair service. A little effort in your search might go a long way when you find the right appliance repair in Savannah. You must go for a professional appliance repair service. Repair service that has a good and credible reputation. A repair service whom you can trust. Repair service with certification and licensed to operate in and around your area. These things can be easily checked online or by making some phone calls to your local business association. You must also keep in mind that you will be entrusting to them not just your appliances but you are also entrusting to them your home.
Be critical in choosing your appliance repair service. This means that you need to verify the information that you get about them online. You can make a visit to their shop or schedule an appointment with them. Ask for copies of permits and accreditation. You also need to know if they are offering warranties not only for their services but also with the parts that they are going to use. You also need to check if they can do repairs for all kinds of appliances regardless of their brand. Some repair services cannot do services for all home appliances or all brands.
Appliance repair must be done immediately and efficiently. Whenever a problem arises, it is important that you already have someone to call whom you know you can trust to help you right away.

4 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A VEHICLE FOR YOUR FOOD TRUCK BUSINESS
Though starting a food business in 2021 might be frightening because of the classic restaurant industry’s crash in 2020 due to COVID-19, it might surprise you to know that food trucks are the perfect solution and compromise for food-lovers who long for the experience of dining out. This is especially true as most brick and mortar restaurants nationwide have stayed closed or half-open.
1. Financing Options
The refrigerated home delivery van is such a more efficient choice over the classic box truck that it actually begins to cut costs. The compressor in a truck has to work double time just to keep the product at temperature, due to the size and seals of the rear compartment. The horribly inefficient seals for the back door cause the cold to leak out and let warmer air in.
Be aware of your budget regarding refrigerated home delivery van and how much interest and monthly payments will cost. Some commercial truck and home delivery van offer various financing options that you could consider. A commercial medium-duty truck is a huge investment, so it’s crucial to get this part right.
2. Gas Or Diesel?
The next thing you need to consider is the fuel type of your truck. Many delivery services prefer diesel trucks, but they might not be the best choice for your mobile food business. The reason for their popularity is their fuel efficiency, especially for traveling long distances.
The downside of diesel trucks, though, is their fumes which are more intense and more lingering than their gas counterparts. So that’s also something you might want to keep in mind.
In the end, it all depends on the frequency of travel and the distance. Some food trucks never leave the city, but some drive for hours for catering gigs or festivals. If you’re the former, then a gas unit is the preferable choice since you’re not going to drive far enough to reap the mileage benefits that come with diesel trucks. Don’t forget to factor fuel cost into your budget.
3. Size
It is crucial to plan out exactly what food you’ll be serving and the equipment you’ll need, as these things will help you determine the perfect truck size for your mobile food business.
If you’re going to prepare hot foods on-site, you should consider shopping for a large truck that can fit a flat top grill or a stove, as well as a cooler or freezer for storing ingredients. On the other hand, if you’re preparing food in advance at home or a commercial kitchen, then a smaller truck will do just fine. Smaller food trucks are also easier to maneuver and cheaper to gas up.
Popular vehicles used as food trucks are small step vans about 12 feet, but they can be as long as 20. One final tip before finalizing your truck size choice is to be aware of your city’s zoning restrictions.
4. Used Or Brand New?
New trucks come with warranties that can save you from a lot of repair costs along the line. This means having more financial security and peace of mind that your truck has never needed any repair, and you’re starting at close to zero mileage.
The only obvious downside to buying brand new trucks is that they can be costly, especially for those just starting out. Moreover, you’ll still need to have enough money for outfitting your truck.
On the other hand, used trucks are more affordable, but some of them could potentially come with additional repair costs, especially if you’re not familiar with the seller.
To be safe, make sure to take a mechanic with you to help you inspect the vehicle before making the purchase. Or better yet, you can always reach out to a commercial truck and trailer dealer that many OKC locals trust.
Final Takeaway
Converting a truck into a mobile food business can be a very daunting task. If you want to skip all of that, some OKC dealerships offer a wide range of new and used food truck models that can help you get started on your food-on-wheels business right away.

Before making a selection of an appliance or a purchase, make sure to ask few questions from yourself like:
How long would you remain in your existing place?
This is a general issue that must first be taken into account. This is because it won't be helpful to purchase high-end and costly equipment if you intend to sell the property in a couple of years. It would help if you also chose functionally decent devices and economically efficient devices.
What is the area of your kitchen? Do you want to follow the latest kitchen designs or a simpler one will be okay?
Try to look at the kitchen area. And if the standard scale is in all electrical or gas bakers.

ELECTRICIAN NEAR ME- What is an Electrician?
An electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, transmission lines, stationary machines, and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure. Electricians may also specialize in wiring ships, airplanes, and other mobile platforms, as well as data and cable lines.
When we refer to, “electricians,” we’re talking about tradespeople that install and repair wiring found in buildings and the various electrical systems found within them, including HVAC, security, lighting and computer network systems.
Today’s electricians can be divided into four main categories:
Residential Electricians – These electricians work in home dwellings that can range from single-family houses to large apartment complexes.
Commercial Electricians – Work sites can include office buildings, retail outlets, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities that do not involve high-voltage. These electricians install and repair electrical systems found in existing commercial buildings, new construction, and renovation projects.
Industrial Electricians – These electricians perform maintenance and installation of electrical components and machinery found in industrial settings. This may include working with high-voltage electricity at industrial manufacturing locations.
Low Voltage Electricians – As their name implies, these electricians are involved with low-voltage systems that primarily include voice, data, and video (VDV) networks and systems. Inside the industry you may hear these professionals referred to as VDV electricians or Voice-Data-Video electricians. Their work typically focuses on phone lines and fiber optic cable repair and installation in any setting where these materials are used.
You will find that some states combine some of these classifications. For example, some states may combine residential and low voltage into one category. Others may combine commercial and industrial electricians into one category.
In addition to classifying electricians by role, they can be further subdivided into three additional categories based on experience and training:
Apprentice – These electricians-in-training work under the supervision of an experienced professional for a number of years before they reach the journeyman level
Journeyman – This status is awarded once an electrician completes their apprenticeship and is judged by a state-approved authority as being competent in their trade
Master – Master electricians are defined as those with years of experience as journeymen who have demonstrated high-level competence through a state-approved exam
As you might have guessed, each state’s electrician licensing regulatory agency defines the parameters and scope of duties for each of these levels.
A Historical Perspective on Electricians
Even though man didn’t master electricity until the 1880s – the time that saw the first central power stations – we’ve certainly understood its brute force since prehistoric times. In fact, many of the most important gods of mythology were those with the power to wield electricity in the form of lightning. While there may have been some close calls along the road to discovering how to make electricity work for humankind, it wasn’t until around 1600 that significant steps towards understanding electromagnetism were made. It was then that the English astronomer William Gilbert made the first recorded in-depth study of static electricity. At that time he found the best way of creating static electricity was by rubbing a cloth against amber, introducing the word “electro” to the English language, which is Greek for amber.
Finally, during a thunderstorm in 1752, Benjamin Franklin did his key-on-the-kite experiment that we all learned about in grade school, and with several other important figures of the day, major inroads were made towards mastering electricity. By 1875, the first electricians installed the first municipal street lighting system in Los Angeles, followed by Paris three years later. Even then those electricians still had somewhat of a divine nature.
Also of interest to note, up until about 1884 there was vigorous competition between the widespread adoption of alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). Had it not been for the invention of the first transformer that year perhaps all of our houses today would be powered by direct current?
Fast-forward to the present and you find that most people take electricity for granted. However that doesn’t diminish the importance of electrician’s one iota.

Cycle Touring: A Beginners Guide
Have you ever been sitting at your terribly boring office job looking at a picture like the one below and wandered: “Hmmm, that looks nice, I wish I could do that.”
Well, guess what? You can. In fact, it’s a hell of a lot easier than you think. I should know, because I do it, and I’m by no means a professional at anything. (I’m still proud of myself when I make a cup of tea successfully.) So, after a few requests (and since my bike is currently being repaired), I decided to use the time to write a blog about cycle touring for beginners.
What are you afraid of?
Funnily enough, the thing that scares most people is the fitness, thinking they won’t be able to cycle the long distances every day. In reality, this is the LEAST of your worries. Cycle touring is not the Tour de France, it doesn’t require any level of fitness at all. Seriously, it’s about as tiring as watching a particularly tense episode of Peaky Blinders. I mean, think about – you’re sitting down and you can move at 10km/h if you want – it’s chilled, homie.
So what should I be afraid of?
For me, the hardest bits are finding somewhere decent to camp and fixing mechanical problems. Depending on the country you’re in, camping can be VERY HARD (India) or VERY EASY (Sweden). Depending on your mechanic skills, bike issues can be VERY HARD or NOT QUITE AS HARD. (My mechanic skills are non-existent, which is why my bike is currently in the shop). I cycled across Africa with hardly any real bike repair skills and I somehow survived, so don’t worry – help is usually not far away.
After injuring my knee, a Warmshower host accommodated me for two days (Sweden, May 2019)
So let’s get down to details
In this blog, I’ll go into detail about all aspects of bike touring for those of you that feel you need to get ALL the info about something before doing it. However, the honest truth is – there is only ONE thing you really need to start bike touring: a bike.
My first bicycle tour I did with a friend at 19 years old from Paris to Cannes on a second-hand $30 mountain bike. The first day we stopped to rest almost every kilometer and only made it 10 kilometers in total. By day six we were doing 50kms a day easily.
It took about a month and cost about €100 in total, most of which was on food. We camped for free almost every night and cooked most of our meals on a cheap gas stove. (Nowadays, free camping in most of Western Europe is illegal and not as easily done, but in the countryside, many farmers will happily let you camp in their field if you ask nicely.)
If you’re lucky you’ll be offered a bed in a spare room (Zambia – Feb 2019)
The Bike
Okay, so the main thing you want with a touring bike is something strong. I travel very light but still carry about 10kg, which means I need more than just the standard cheap alloy frame and wheels that come with a basic road bike. A good starter touring bike is either a cheap touring bike, a basic mountain bike (no rear suspension) or a commuter/hybrid bicycle with gears. Fixie or single-speed bikes are generally not good for touring as you’ll struggle to go uphill with weight. Similarly, carbon bicycles usually aren’t designed to carry weight and anyway, are too expensive.
You DO NOT need a professional touring bike, especially not if you’re just starting out. If you decide after one week that it’s not for you then you’re just stuck with a €2000 bicycle that is now worth half that on resale value (if you do do this, however, I’ll buy that half-price bike off you!) Of course, if you’ve got the disposable cash then, by all means, buy a touring bike – even if you don’t end up touring a lot, it’s still a good bike for going around town.
The bicycle I’ve been touring on for the past two years cost only €350 from Decathlon (a simple BTwin Triban 100). It’s a basic road bike but with a stronger frame for carrying luggage. I had to upgrade a few bits and pieces but after 2 years, 10 thousand kilometers and 15 countries it’s still essentially the original bicycle. Now that I know I love cycle touring and want to keep doing it, I’m at the stage where I can start looking into buying a real touring bike.
Kerala, India (February 2018)
To begin with, it’s best to use whatever bicycle you currently own and just add racks or figure out a way to attach luggage to it. If you do decide to buy a new bike I wouldn’t go lower than €300 or you risk getting something that will just break soon with a lot of weight on it. (Second-hand mountain bike, on the other hand, make great cheap touring bikes but are usually a bit heavy and not as easy to cycle on-road)
Some examples of good beginner touring bikes:
Dawes Galaxy (or Ridgeback World Tour)
Dawes has been making bicycles since before the war and is still making some of the best and most affordable touring bikes. The Dawes Galaxy is a classic and is fairly cheap for touring standards, at only about €600. The Ridgeback World Tour is a similar price.
Jamis Aurora (or Allegro Sport)
Jamis does a cheap touring bike, the Aurora, at only about €600. Something similar to this is the Allegro Sport which is a good lightweight entry-level road bike that has rear eyelets for attaching a rack. With bikes like these, they don’t come built for touring so you need to add things like a rack. However, they are usually cheaper at about €400.
Trek Dual Sport (or Marlin 5) These are good crossover bikes that aren’t mountain bikes but have thicker tires that work well on-road or offroad and can carry heavier weight. They are also easy to convert into touring bikes by adding a rear luggage rack.
Bike ADD-ONS:
With whatever bike you buy, you’ll need these additions at the very minimum:
Schwalbe Marathon tires (trust me)
Extra water bottle holder
A small pump, puncture repair kit, and spare tubes
Lights (even if you don’t plan on cycling at night, get some lights!)
Camping
Camping is often the most enjoyable and most annoying part of bike touring. Naturally, you need to be the kind of outdoors-person who enjoys camping to start with (but presumably you wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t). From finding a campsite, dealing with the weather, and cooking successfully – it all depends on how prepared you are.
The tent
Again, as with the bike, you don’t need any special over-priced equipment. Tents range from €20 to €2000, usually depending on how light and how weather-resistant they are. The only tent I’ve ever used cost €30 from Decathlon. It’s basically an entry-level tent and at 1.5kgs it’s not the lightest but it’s not exactly heavy either and it’s never once leaked or blown away in the wind. I can’t imagine why I’d ever need anything else BUT I’m yet to camp on Mount Everest – or in any extreme conditions – so I don’t know.
Naturally, you’ll also need some kind of roll map or inflatable mattress and a sleeping bag. These are also things you can get for cheap at any camping or outdoors store. Always try to get the smallest/lightest you can afford. If you’re going somewhere that is below 10 degrees at night make sure to get a winter sleeping bag – trust me! The summer ones are NOT warm enough.
Cooking equipment
You don’t necessarily need cooking equipment and if it’s your first trip you might choose to skip this and just make sandwiches or similar. On my first trip to India, I didn’t ever cook because the street food is so cheap and also camping is basically illegal where I was in the south. (Luckily, hotels are $5 a night so I didn’t need to.)
If you do want to cook, the basics you need are a small gas stove attachment, gas canisters that fit it, a pot, a knife, and a spoon or fork. Additionally, you can take a frying pan but I never have. Mostly, I just eat pasta which can all be made in one pot together. (A pot can also be used to make oats in the morning if you wanna eat cheap). The simpler, the better. (However, I have seen pro cycle-tourists who carry entire kitchens with them and cook 5-star meals!)
Bike Tools
You’ll need to learn how to fix a puncture or change a tube at the VERY least. The rest you can learn as you go. The minimum tools you should carry (usually in a seat bag) are tire levers, puncture kit, and spare tubes. You should also have a small bike tool that has a set of Allen keys and screwdrivers (for tightening bolts, changing seat height, etc). These cost about €5 at any bike shop.
There are a bunch of other tools that are useful but you don’t need to worry about these at the start.
So, how do I start?
Okay, so you’ve got your bicycle, a tent, sleeping gear, tools and maybe a little stove and pot. You can stuff everything in a bag and strap it on the back with bungee cords or buy additional pannier bags that clip on your rack. Either way works fine and depends on your budget. Pannier bags do have advantages like being water-proof and distributing weight well, but I didn’t use any for my first five or six trips. As long as all your stuff stays on the bike, you’re good to go! (Wrap it in plastic if you expect rain.)
You might also want to buy a handlebar bag or frame bag where you can keep snacks, a phone charger, map, etc. (But that’s all stuff you’ll get more involved with once you start touring, I didn’t have one on my first trip)
Then, plan your trip.
For the first one, I’d suggest going for a short weekend roll about in whatever nature surrounds your hometown. This way you get to test the bicycle and camping gear without going too far from home. Wherever you are in the world there should at least be a forest, beach or field to camp in or at the very least, a cheap local campsite. Campsites obviously have the advantage or electricity, running water and toilets and might be a good starter option if you are new to camping.
If you choose to wild camp, make sure you don’t camp on someone’s property or at least ask permission first if you do. Also, obviously don’t leave a mess whether its someone’s property or not!
A public shelter (Sweden, May 2019)
Countries Countrywise, I found Sweden to be a great place to start bicycle touring because it has excellent roads, good cycle lanes in many places, and you camp wherever you want legally and for free! (not on private property obviously).
In most of Eastern Europe, you can also pretty much camp wherever without trouble but Sweden is super-safe and you are guaranteed to get no hassles. In Germany and much of Western Europe, so-called “wild” camping is illegal and if you don’t hide very well, you will get told to move or possible even fined. Germany is the most strict about this.
Sweden
I haven’t cycle-toured the U.S. or South America but I’ve heard it’s quite good for wild camping as it has an abundance of nature. Most of Southeast Asia is good for wild camping and also has very cheap accommodation everywhere. (Places like central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are best reserved for those who are experienced cycle tourists.)
Budget
Your daily budget will vary somewhat depending on where you are and how ‘wild’ you are prepared to be. If you wild camp every night and only cook cheap supermarket food you can get by on a few euro a day. Using a shared accommodation app like Warmshowers can also keep down costs and is a great way to meet other cycle tourists!
If you need to pay for accommodation for whatever reason, it’s going to be around €5 – €15 per day in cheap countries and €30-€40 in more expensive ones (like the US and Western Europe). It’s easy to check what accommodation is available and costs beforehand on apps like Agoda or Booking(.)com. As a beginner, it’s nice to know what’s around in case of rain – or if you just need a shower!
Conclusion The main thing is – KEEP IT SIMPLE. Cycle touring is not difficult – honestly. Just pack some stuff, get on your bike, and go. Your first puncture, your first rainstorm, your first busy road will all be tough, but it only gets easier. The longer you do it, the less the problems become a struggle and the more enjoyable everything is. Soon you’ll be a star mechanic, a fit cyclist, and an excellent stealth-camper… and then you’ll quit your lame desk job and wonder why you didn’t choose this lifestyle long ago!

Scrambled eggs, like scrambled feelings
Oksøy Lighthouse - Oksøy Fyr - Norway - Saturday 7:30 am
“The boat is in the opposite direction.” He protested as I dragged him to the side of the lighthouse.
"I know. But that side is ...I mean look at it!”
I expected a snazzy remark along the lines of “Yes, I know, I happen to live here. In fact, I was born here. I even grew up here! Imagine that! Some forty-five odd years around the neighborhood!.” But Sven was above those petty levels and simply followed me.
The wind had calmed down, even on this coastal island edge, the swashing and lapping of the waves against the rocky shores was the most soothing sensation and for a moment I completely spaced out, vaguely being conscious of Sven’s warm hand holding mine, maybe imagining the slow shift of his body behind mine, the pulling back hug, his hands still on mine. The sky was of a magnificent alleviating blue, the ocean, a marvelous rich, nurturing, perfect deep blue. I wanted to drown in the healing blue, caressed and rocked and carried away by the wind.
“Why are you really in Norway?”
His voice, a warm whisper in my ear, was like a therapist’ voice, reassuring, inviting to truly open up.
“I’m trying to mend a stupid ass broken heart.” I whispered in one go, suddenly out of breath, wondering if I had answered his question or if I was confessing to the roaring ocean.
“Heart aches and heartbreaks are never stupid.” His hug tightened and I felt a kiss on the back of my head. “They are hard, the wounds sting bad, but they also teach us. Did you know that the Japanese value broken vases and bowls which they repair with gold? Wounds and scars paint a beautiful unique portrait of the soul.”
I let my head rest against his shoulder and fully savored the moment; his arms around me, his body keeping mine warm, the refreshing wind keeping a reality check on me. I wanted to burst into tears and sob a little, the magnificence of this moment would, sooner or later, end, and I didn’t want to face that eventuality, not even the thought of. I rolled the memory of his kiss on my tongue, the warmth, the passion, the hunger. My answer wasn’t any lesser than his demands. It had been sweet and scary at the same time. I didn’t want to catch feelings, I didn’t want to hurt him, but I was already comfortably snug cocooning in this infatuation.
Thank you, Sven, for this magnificent moment.
I gladly let him operate the small motored boat on the way back to mainland, my ego had been satisfied on the way here, more or less successfully proving him that I could, in fact, maneuver the damned thing on my own. And I had enjoyed every single of peek I had at his face, both dubious and relieved that I didn’t cause a double drown in freezing cold waters.
“We just passed a coffee shop.” I mentioned as we did in fact elongated the distance between us and a gorgeous cozy little shop I was excited to try out.
“I know.” He smiled smug back at me.
“I guess you have a favorite spot?”
I should have thought of that.
“You can say it like that - yes.” He smiled again.
I wanted to play a game, but I felt childish and silly and very stupid. Back in my college years, whenever I went out with a friend, and mind you, this was downtown Montreal, with cars and traffic lights and a myriad of by-passers in the heat of the noon hour when everyone around downtown was out and about for lunch and leisure, I randomly closed my eyes, as he was holding my hand, and I let him guide me around the streets to wherever he was taking me for lunch at.
I tripped on something and felt Sven’s arm suddenly slide around my shoulders to catch me.
“What are you doing?” He snapped, worried.
“Playing a game.” I made an effort not to open my eyes. “I close my eyes and see how far I can trust you.”
“You often play this game?”
“Only with whom I deem worthy of a shot.”
He tightened his grip a notch. My heart accelerated. How to kill a flame; be a stupid rogue on not even official date.
“Watch your step.”
I poked my toe against a small concrete elevation. I couldn’t tell just how long we had walked. I had selfishly enjoyed it. Sounds of the village. Sounds of our steps on the dirt paths or concrete streets. Random chitter-chatter from people passing us by. The chirping or birds. The wind. The distant roar of the ocean fading but ever present, a distant echo reminding us that were on an island still. Cars rolling past us. His silence, beautiful, comforting.
He put both hands on my shoulders and I could feel his warm breath against my ear once more.
“You can open your eyes now.”
I had a bit of a shock when I recognized his kitchen counter and coffee machine neatly aligned in front of me.
“You impressed with that boat earlier this morning. Safe to assume I can trust you with this piece of machinery.”
Real funny, Sven.
“When we were at the lighthouse, I wanted to say “let’s go home and you can make me coffee” but I think it would have been too soon.”
My heart squeezed delightfully in my chest. Let’s go home - not: let’s go back to my place and i’ll let you maneuver the coffee machine.Oh! Miniature Illy avatar was swooning all over the place.
“So - euhm - you tell me where you store the ingredients or do I roam free in your cabinets?”
“You managed to go around by yourself in a country with a non Latin based writing system, I think you can handle roaming around my cabinets and cupboards.”
Miniature Illy was about floating in sparkly glittery popping hearts. I tried not to smile stupidly like a lost enamored high school girl.
Sven then casually sat down at the kitchen table and opened the newspaper laying there. Was it last night’s evening paper or even older or this morning’s paper? Did an actual paper boy deliver it before the crack of dawn?
“Can I ...” I started and suddenly felt intimated by my bold inspiration.
“Can you...” He repeated, giving me his full attention.
“Can I make you breakfast?” I spurted out with half a grimace.
He then froze in a a near perfect still shot, morphed into incredulous bewilderment, and exploded in a fit of laughter.
“Yes!” He said between two fits of laughter “Yes, you may make me breakfast.” He picked up the newspaper “Matter of fact, I’ll even give you carte blanche.”
I cracked my fingers and took a deep breath. Time to have a goddamned plan! And hopefully not break his coffee machine...
The sound of a quiet morning in a random kitchen in Norway. Someone turning the pages of a printed newspaper. Someone’s soft peaceful breathing. The dripping drop by drop of a coffee machine brewing coffee, cracking eggs, beating them in a bowl. A car passing by in the distance. The roaring ocean nearer - just outside the window - a few steps in the backyard. A tourist lost and found in a small village at the other end of the world. I loved villages at the end of the world. I came from one, I felt home in them. My secret hide out, safe places. Harasztkerék, Targu Mures, Romania. Doolin, County Clare, Ireland. Skålevik, Vest-Agder county, Norway. Someone turning a few pages of a printed newspaper. A loud thump against the front door.
My heart skipped a beat, then decided to race furiously in my chest. I was happily surveying the delicate mix of cheese with scrambled eggs over a hot gas stove. They were near perfect ready. Bread was patiently laying on a plate, ready to welcome a luxurious coat of thick rich scrambled eggs with bits of ham and a heavy load of gooey melted cheese.
Sven calmly put the paper down and smiled reassuringly, but I noted concern on his face.
“Stay here. It’s okay. Nothing to worry about.”
The weariness of his tone informed me he was no stranger to whatever situation was unfolding outside. But I worried. Human nature - you can’t escape that shit. I tried to muster as much self control as I could to garnish the bread slices with the thick rich mix of scrambled eggs and melted cheese, sprinkled a few more bits of ham on top, instagram dropped a few tomato slices and, at fault of having proper baby pickles - I would have to touch a word about this to him - dropped in a small string of grapes.
The proper thing would have been to patiently wait for his return, enthuse about the breakfast and play as if nothing had disrupted the otherwise perfect little morning, but I never qualified as a proper lady following the proper course of actions. I was the lovable rogue who did what pleased her; take it or leave it. After having neatly laid the plates on the table and poured coffee in two mugs, I decided that I was dead curious to see what had caused the incidental ruckus outside and found Sven taking photos of a bloody crime scene.
“Can you fetch me a few Q-tips?” His tone was monotone, matter of fact, instructor giving directives to an apprentice. “Bathroom is on the second floor, first door on your left. Medicine cabinet mirror.” He continued. “And a Ziploc bag from the kitchen on your way out. Takk!*” He smiled briefly, but I could see the lassitude on his face.
I rushed in the house like horror movie victim running for her sweet life, sped up the stairs two steps by two, busted in the bathroom out of breath and opened the mirrored medical cabinet to find a cute little glass square box of said Q-tips of which i snatched few, cussing myself out midway down that I should have fetched them using a piece of toilet paper - but it was too late now, my finger prints were on them, or partial finger prints at least. I found the box of plastic sandwich bags in the pantry and allowed zero concerns this time, a trip at the local police precinct would be an adventure on it’s own!
Sven was on the phone when I carefully stepped out, trying not to touch the outside of the door. Big bloody red letters spelled out HORE and something in the forefront of my mind told me that the Norwegian spelling was about just a letter missing from it’s English equivalent, but I failed to understand the context and how or why the word was painted on this man’s front door.
‘Takk, takk. Jeg venter” He hung up the call.
“The precinct will send an officer over shortly.” He informed me.
“Is that... real blood?”
“Pig's blood. Yes.”
The odd realization of the fact froze me in place.
“Why...”
“My daughter’s ex boyfriend didn’t take it too well that she moved away; went to live in England with her mother and her new husband.”
Just how much can one morning hold and not break the fragile thread being weave between two people ?
Takk = Thanks!
jeg venter = i’ll be waiting
