I see you | Jim Hopper x Reader (Chapter 1)
Summary: You recently moved to Hawkins, Indiana to have some piece and quiet to pursue your dream of becoming a writer, whilst also having to work at the diner to be able to pay your bills. But Hawkins isn't what it seems and soon you witness the disappearance of Will Byers, a local boy. When you tell the head of police, who turns out to be a regular at the diner, all about what you saw, not only a strange story unfolds but also a complicated relationship with attractive Chief Hopper.
Chapter: 1 / ?
includes: strangers to lovers, slow burn, getting together, first meeting, set in season 1, post season 1, pre season 2, hopper is a ladies man but he actually really likes you, age of reader is not mentioned but reader is in her late 20s, no description of reader, no use of Y/N, Hopper falls first
************************************************************************
Chapter 1: "The New Waitress"
“That was the last one Ma’am” one of the movers told you, setting down the last box in your brand new apartment.
“Thank you so much for your help.” you said, taking his hand to slide him a 20 bill, like you had seen your dad do when you were a kid. He smiled at you, exposing a set of brilliant white teeth that made you remember that you had to schedule a dentist appointment soon.
As you looked around your new home you couldn’t help but feel both sad and happy at the same time. It had been quite the decision to move to Hawkins, Indiana, only to be able to focus more on yourself and your writing. Nobody had understood and nobody had taken you seriously. But you were done with pretending to be someone that you weren’t, so you had pulled out a map, closed your eyes and put your index finger somewhere on it. You had been a bit disappointed that your finger hadn’t magically landed on New York City or sunny Los Angeles, but a town you had never heard of in the middle of nowhere. But maybe that was good. Maybe that was exactly what you needed. Space and quiet.
Even though you had moved here to pursue your artistic dreams, you still had to have a stable income to pay your bills. As soon as you had stepped out of your run down pick up truck for the first time in Hawkins, you had asked in about every store, restaurant or cafe if they needed any help. Betty’s Diner was where you got lucky and eventually hired.
“Hey, new girl! Table 5!” Sharon barked, causing you to flinch.
“Got it.” you replied before getting into motion.
“Hey there, what can I get for you?” you asked, ready to jot down whatever this broad hunk of man wanted. The guy’s head shot in your direction. His bearded face had a frown on it and his deep sea blue eyes studied your face skeptically. You couldn’t deny that he was pretty attractive. He blinked.
“Are you new here?” he asked, making it sound like an accusation. Oh man, was he one of those guys who always ordered the same thing and expected the ‘The usual?’ treatment accompanied by a cheeky wink and an accidental brush over his huge bicep? You sure hoped not because if so, he’d gotten the wrong girl for that.
“Yeah.” you said dryly, raising your brows at his confused expression. “So?”
“Uh… coffee. Black. And scrambled eggs. Donut. Bacon. Crispy.”
You wondered if he’d had a stroke.
“Sure.” you mumbled, writing down his order, “Coming right up.”
Ten minutes later you brought the guy a plate full of his breakfast and poured him a cup of coffee.
“If you need anything else, let me know.” you said with a weary smile, before leaving him alone with his food.
************************************************************************
“Who’s your new waitress?” Hopper asked Betty, while you were in the back, restocking shelves.
“Oh… She just moved here. Nice girl, a bit weird though. Why, was she rude?” Betty asked, cocking an eyebrow. Hopper shook his head.
“No! No, she was just… Your other waitresses are more -”
“Extroverted?” Betty asked. Hopper laughed out loud.
“Well, yeah, maybe.” he said, thinking about how you hadn’t grinned and greeted him with ‘Chief, what are you doing here?’ while hitting him playfully on his bicep. Your annoyed and confused look had been refreshing. Was that how celebrities felt when they met someone who didn’t know who they were?
************************************************************************
“Hey, new girl.” Betty said, coming up to you, as you were still busy restocking the shelves.
“Hey Betty, what’s up?”
“Your tip from Table 5.” she said, handing you a 5 dollar bill. You frowned.
“I thought all the tips get in the tip jar?”
“Yeah, but the customer insisted on you getting it.” she said, smiling. You burst out laughing.
“What? Why?”
“He said he’s sorry if he made you feel uncomfortable and that he liked your service.”
You furrowed your brows.
What the hell was that weirdo on?!

The director of Sound of Freedom (full disclosure: I haven’t seen that movie), which became the darling of A Very Right Wing Audience, made a movie starring a saint, the message of which is that the system is terrible to immigrants in the US, and you shouldn’t treat them like trash.
I have a lot of thoughts, guys.
Cabrini tells the story of Mother Saint Frances Cabrini, an Italian religious sister who wanted to start missionary orphanages in China and wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. The Pope convinces her that she start working in the West, first–specifically in New York City, where Italian immigrants live in slums and are shunned by the populace, including the local diocese’s administration. Undaunted, Mother Cabrini charges forward to build her orphanage, whether or not she’ll get support from the city, the press, or the Church.
I kind of want to talk about the critical conversation that surrounded this movie.
Obviously, a film featuring a saint as its protagonist will get attention from Catholic outlets, and that’s where I saw most of the reviews. There was a noticeable common thread among Catholic critics that even though it’s about a canonized saint, a religious sister, and the character’s explicitly Catholic in the movie, her faith is not explored as her motivation, and it doesn’t really emphasize God working through her. We Catholics do not believe that we accomplish holy tasks based on our own power–we do it through God’s grace.
This movie, on the other hand, understandably makes it so that Mother Cabrini is the prime mover of events, though she certainly does have faith. But for Catholics, her reverence for God should be more emphasized, and her crediting and trusting in Him should be more explicit. I understand that in order to make it appeal to a wider (if still primarily Christian) audience, this was toned down, though I don’t know if it was the best idea.
My family and I also noted, while watching the film, that Frances Cabrini’s backstory is not really explored in a comprehensive way. Okay, fine, the movie’s not about that, and there’s enough to go off of. What’s a little more frustrating is that the sisters she leads in her efforts at building an orphanage are… look, I don’t know if they even have names in the film. I don’t remember much about them, other than that they’re there to back up the main character.
There are, however, not-so-legitimate criticisms I’ve seen. The Pillar talked a bit about it in one of their posts, but did not go into a full review because their writers are reporters of Catholic news (and they do very good work on that front, being unafraid of talking about scandal and asking hard questions). The opinion of the editor there was that, along with the above criticism, the antagonists were caricatures of patriarchal corruption, being essentially douchey men, which he felt was putting all the problems faced by the characters on men.
Which… yeah, because she’s running up against corrupt or uncaring systems and institutions, which at the time are all run… by men.
Maybe this is because I recently read Burn It Down, but taking issue with this feels like missing the point of the movie. You can say all you want that the systems in place aren’t just the fault of some men in charge, but those men in charge hold a lot of responsibility. Immigrants aren’t suffering in the US because the system has to be that way, they’re because people in charge choose to make or keep it that way to benefit themselves. The movie simplifies how these systems work, yes, but that doesn’t change that depicting them as the result of prejudiced, greedy, and corrupt men is not a bad choice.
Like, imagine if someone complained that Hidden Figures uses caricatures that are too simple for the reality of what happened. Yeah, that’s true, and there are definite issues with those depictions, but is it wrong to do that in a movie? I don’t think so.
[And then at least one person in the comments of that post angrily claims this movie constitutes “militant feminism” which makes me see red. Do words even have meaning these days? I feel like every time a film with female leads has a douchey male villain, some whackjob claims that it’s a story asserting that all men are evil.]
If the figures depicted in the movie actually were generally alright people, and the film is villainizing real people unnecessarily, then yes, we have some problems. Otherwise, I’m fine with it.
I am also kind of stunned how much this movie comes out swinging on certain issues. Again, the director’s previous film was a movie that got a lot of attention from right wing media, and this is one that depicts things like racism against immigrants, police brutality, political corruption–things that I don’t think FOX News is as keen on talking about. I think audiences cared enough about it for this movie to be mildly successful, though, which shows that, thankfully, people aren’t on as strictly drawn socio-political lines as the media would have you believe.
This is a fairly powerful narrative, guys, and it does not hold back. There are wealthy (white) New Yorkers complaining about how “brown children” are running through their streets, people denigrating others for not speaking English, and pointing out that the people oppressing immigrants today are the descendants of immigrants who themselves went through oppression when they arrived.
I like that the movie does not flinch away from that: showing that many of the problems we face today are not new, they’ve been baked into this country for over a century. The problems just wear slightly different hats–who the immigrants being oppressed are, for instance. That doesn’t mean it’s a progressive masterpiece, but I like this direction.
And I really like the title character. She is someone who absolutely does not give up, but is constantly getting frustrated by the people around her underestimating what she’s trying to do and whether she can accomplish it. She knows that she can, the problem is getting other people to see that as well.
Also, the movie’s last line. I’m very fond of it.
But like I said, this movie doesn’t really feel like it’s that interested in the lives of those who served in Mother Cabrini’s religious order, or much of her life and interests. And that’s a definite failing of the movie. Overall, though, I think it’s good, it’s strong, and I think it sticks with you. I lament a bit that it’s not more Catholic, and it could have been. I don’t think it’s necessarily as good a movie about historical figures as something like Hidden Figures, but it is very good, and I encourage people to at least check it out.

Small Moves, Epic Change: NYC’s Remarkable Job Solutions
Tumblr media
When it comes to relocating, small moves often require just as much attention as larger jobs. Maybe you’re moving a single piece of furniture, a few boxes, or even just a small office. Finding the right movers for small jobs in NYC can be crucial. Small moves, though seemingly straightforward, demand efficiency and precision. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you find the best options for small moves in New York City.
Understanding Small Moves
Small moves are unique. They don’t involve the complexity of a full household move but still need careful planning. Small moves in NYC typically include transferring items such as single pieces of furniture, minimal household goods, or small office equipment. According to recent data, over 25% of New Yorkers who move annually require services for small moves. This percentage highlights a significant market for mini moves within the city.
The good news is that the NYC moving market caters well to these smaller needs. Many local moving companies are specifically geared toward handling small moves efficiently. Transitioning to a new location doesn’t always mean dealing with a large-scale operation. Instead, finding the right movers for small jobs can make the process seamless and stress-free.
Why Choose Specialized Movers for Small Jobs?
Specialized movers for small jobs offer several advantages. First, they understand the intricacies involved in moving fewer items. They often use equipment tailored to handle small moves without compromising on care. According to industry statistics, moving companies that focus on small moves have a 15% higher satisfaction rate compared to those handling larger jobs. This is because these companies are experts in optimizing their processes for small-scale operations.
Moreover, specialized small move services are often more affordable. Data shows that small moving jobs can cost up to 30% less than traditional full-service moves. This cost efficiency is particularly valuable in a city like NYC, where expenses can quickly add up.
Popular NYC Companies for Small Moves
Roadway Moving: Known for their efficiency, Roadway Moving handles small jobs with a focus on customer satisfaction. They offer comprehensive services that include packing and unpacking for smaller loads.
Moishe’s Moving Systems: This company has a reputation for reliability. They cater to small moves with professional care. The company ensures your items are transported safely and efficiently.
The NYC Moving Company: Offering tailored services for mini moves. They provide competitive rates and specialized equipment for small jobs.
Jersey City Movers: Although based in Jersey City, they service NYC and are well-regarded for handling small moves with expertise and care.
NYC Small Move: This company specializes in exactly what the name suggests. They are known for affordable rates and efficient service for small-scale moves.
Finding the Right Moving Quotes
When looking for quotes for small moves, it’s essential to compare offers from different moving companies. Data from recent studies indicates that requesting at least three moving quotes can save up to 20% on overall moving costs. Many companies provide online quote systems, allowing you to easily compare prices without needing to make multiple phone calls.
Tips for a Smooth Small Move
Plan Ahead: Scheduling your move well in advance can prevent last-minute issues. Aim to book your moving company at least two weeks prior to your desired move date.
Declutter: Before moving, sort through your items. Decluttering can reduce the volume of your move, potentially lowering costs.
Pack Smart: Use high-quality packing materials to protect your belongings. Efficient packing also helps in reducing the time and cost of the move.
Communicate Clearly: Provide detailed information about what needs to be moved. Clear communication with your movers can prevent misunderstandings and ensure a smoother transition.
Exploring Local Moving Companies
For those seeking local movers, NYC has a broad range of options. Local moving companies often offer specialized services for small moves. Their proximity can enhance convenience. Many local movers also provide customized solutions to fit your specific needs.
Single Item Movers in NYC
If you’re only moving a single item, such as a piano, the search for single item movers NYC can be focused. Piano movers, in particular, require specialized skills and equipment. For example, a professional piano moving service in NYC can cost between $150 and $500, depending on the distance and piano type.
Small Moves NYC: Key Takeaways
Targeted Services: Choose movers who specialize in small moves to ensure expert handling of your items.
Competitive Rates: Many companies offer affordable options specifically for small moves, providing better value for your money.
Efficiency: Specialized small move services often complete tasks faster, making your transition smoother.
Reviews and Recommendations: Check platforms like Reddit for reviews of single item movers NYC to gauge customer satisfaction.
In conclusion, small moves in NYC require careful planning and the right expertise. By choosing movers who specialize in small jobs, you ensure a more efficient and cost-effective process. You might need mini moves, single item movers, or just a reliable local company. The options in NYC are plentiful. Armed with this information, you’re well on your way to a successful small move.

SMB x Worm Here they are, the whole supervillain team is assembled: Magician, plumber, secretary, spider-girl, muscle-guy and clown. Count Bleck (cape identity) - the leader of a team of supervillains, and he is also a genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist. Classified as Mover 3 (His main ability is teleportation, but he can also float in the air), he is also armed with his wand, created by E.G., from which he can shoot lightning at short distances and beat them if the enemy is nearby. He has a mansion in which he not only lives, but also has a base where the team is assembled. He used to be a superhero with Timpani, but after the death of his beloved, he left his superhero career. Nastasia - an immigrant who left Russia after the Endbringer attack on Moscow and its following destruction. Now she is Count's right-hand man working behind the PRT's lines. The only member of the team who does not participate in battles, instead she obtaining the necessary information that could help the team in the future (and other's PRT's secrets which she can manipulate others). Powerful hypnotic abilities also help her in this (She is not officially classified, as she is not listed as a parahuman in society). So far, no one suspects her existence as another member of the supervillain team. Unrequited in love with Count Bleck... O'Chunks - a typical "muscles instead of brains". He is the main striking force of the team. Apart from his innate physical strength, he have superpowers classified as Brute 6 (Unfortunately, PRT perceives his innate strength for superpowers, which is why he has high countermeasures), thanks to which he is able to withstand a large number of blows and damage, from which an ordinary person would have already died long ago. He used to be a military man, but his entire team died during the Behemoth attack on New York. O'Chunks was saved by Count Bleck. He is also unrequited in love with Nastasia... (oh, this love triangle) Mimi (nobody knows her real name) - a girl who used to live in one of the temporary accommodation facilities owned by Count Bleck, who invited her to join his team after learning about her superpowers. Mimi is able to transform its body into a spider-like abomination, increasing in size and becoming stronger. She can also crawl on walls and ceilings after transformation. Changer 3 (Her transformation takes a long time and it is also quite painful)), the main trump card in the sleeve of the Count's team. She likes to dress stylishly and brightly, but she can't be called a cute girl, just no. Fun fact: Mimi likes spiders and she have her own tarantula.  Dementio (cape identity) - Local trickster and prob the most chaotic member of “Pure Hearts”, cunning and clever, although he pretends to be a fool. No one has figured out how he got into the team. He is able to manipulate space on a certain area, distorting it and changing it at his discretion (Shaker 7 (PRT really hates that guy)), although Dementio uses his brains more, which is why he may be mistakenly classified as Thinker. Together with Nastasia, they arrange a brainstorming session. Well, you already know everything about Mr. L, so I'll move on to lore. The plot of AU takes place in New York, which attacked by Behemoth 8 years ago. The city survived, but it had to go through difficult times for New York to blossom again. Luigi and Mario were one of the survivors of the Endbringer attack, but unfortunately their home was destroyed and they were left orphaned... Luigi knew that Mario was working very hard to provide for both of them and in order not to feel useless, he began to try to help him. The feeling of uselessness did not go away, but at the same time he began to feel like a shadow against the background of Mario, who at the same time was popular at school and was everyone's favorite. And Luigi? "Oh! That guy in green!" Recently, conflicts between brothers have also become more frequent. The culmination of everything was the accidental disclosure that Mario was a superhero known as "Firebrand". He understood Mario was working hard for them, but- ...no. He did not want to understand anything anymore. Envy and resentment finally splashed him. He got fed up with the role of the shadow, he no longer wanted to be second. Why the hell does Mario get all the best? Why and why does everyone around him love and adore him? But Luigi was still powerless in this situation. And then he triggered. Initially, Luigi wanted to join The Wards after discovering his powers. But he remembered Mario and Luigi was afraid that he would still remain the second there. And when he made his first power-gloves, he went outside with a mask on the street, where after a while he is noticed by the "Pure Hearts" team. It was a team of villains, but he was finally noticed, he is no longer felt like a shadow. He agreed. Not immediately, but Luigi- no, Mr. L did it. He is now a part of something bigger, and in the new team he no longer feels alone. But will Luigi regret his decision in the future? It's only a matter of time.

new york is not just a town that you'll never lose
Bart Allen. Tom Bronson. New York Subways. Arm Chairs. Post-Graduation Possibilities. 2554 words. (ao3.)
It had been five days since Bart Allen had begun his “internship” with the Justice Society of America and only five days since he first arrived in Manhattan.
On top of staying in the Battery Park brownstone free of charge, Bart was attending team meetings, participating in training sessions with the old man in the cat suit, and making sure to carve out time to appreciate the city.
New York was certainly a change of pace from the Bay Area university he had called home. Gone was the lively campus and salty sea air outside of his dorm. Now when he stepped out the door Bart was greeted to the sound of people yelling over rush hour traffic.
During the last five days, Bart was fortunate to have lived through a handful of quintessential New York experiences.
He had walked past an influencer recording a video of some kind of colorful, gimmicky instagrammable food item. He had gotten yelled at by a Yankees fan for daring to don his Keystone Salamanders baseball cap in public. He had visited the fabled “bodegas” that New Yorkers talked so lovingly about, only to be disappointed to discover that they were essentially family-owned corner stores. He had also tried the “chopped cheese sandwich” that the locals claimed was superior to every other American sandwich, and was even more disappointed to discover that it was essentially a deconstructed hamburger.
Today Bart was going through something that he didn’t see on the various listicles and articles regarding “authentic” New York experiences.
Tom Bronson, Ted Grant’s son and the better-looking Wildcat, had found a “friggin’ steal” on Craigslist. Some NYU drop-out drowning in student debt was in desperate need to get rid of the furniture in their dorm. Apparently, after flunking out of school he needed to move out of the city ASAP and couldn’t bring most of his things. As Tom had been wanting an armchair for his room for the last few months, he had stalked the original posting until the last minute, when the original poster finally had no choice but to give the chair away for free just to get things over with.
With most other JSA members too busy to help Tom with his errand, he had enlisted the team’s fresh meat to get the job done. Always down for an adventure and a reason to avoid training with the older Wildcat, Bart didn’t hesitate to say yes.
Carrying the armchair out of the NYU dorm proved to be the easy part, as both the pretty boy Wildcat and the gangly Speedster had enough strength to lift the furniture down the flight of stairs. They didn’t even need to scream “PIVOT!” once.
Even walking through Washington Square Park wasn’t that difficult. Most of the New Yorkers in the area were too busy with themselves to pay attention to the two pretty boys playing the role of movers for the day.
However, the difficult part was carrying the chair into the subway station.
Tommy yelled every curse in the English language as he and Bart struggled to get the armchair over the turnstile. As Bart awkwardly held onto the legs of the item and tried to remain on his feet, he noticed that Tommy’s Brooklyn accent got even thicker with every word.
The fact that the two hadn’t been stopped by security was some kind of miracle.
After the nightmare that was getting the armchair past the entrance and swiping their metro passes, the plucky duo carried the furniture down a flight of stairs and onto the train platform. The only people that paid attention to them were the ones that bumped into the chair. Even then, the only words being exchanged were variations of the phrase “outta my way” or “ move, dickhead.”
Due to both his cavalcade of curse words and the physical strain of carrying the armchair, Tommy was out of breath as they walked to the edge of the platform.
“Okay…” he said, breathing in and out. “Just… drop it… here…”
From the other side of the chair, Bart nodded and did as he was told. Once the item was on the ground, Bart watched Tom collapse, just barely catching himself on the arm of the furniture.
“Welp, that’s one for the bucket list,” said Bart as he glanced around the area. At this hour of the morning, the place wasn’t too crowded.
“Yeah… can we… take five…?” Tom begged as struggled to pull himself onto the chair.
Once again, Bart nodded, then reached over to pull the Pretty Boy Wildcat off the platform.
“Here, lemme help.”
Tom looked relieved as Bart plopped him onto the chair. “Thank you,” he said, still struggling to get air into his lungs.
Bart grinned as he rested his bottom against the arm of the chair. Despite Tommy heaving like a Prius driving up a hill, Bart felt assured to know that there was someone in the world with less upper-body strength than him.
A few minutes passed as Tom recovered and Bart watched the trains move past the platforms. Still being new to the city, he had been relying on Google Maps just to get from A to B, and even then it was difficult to pinpoint exactly where he needed to go.
It was times like these where Bart was thankful to have a local help him get around, as he had possibly no way to decipher which train would bring them back to the Battery. In fact, Bart was pretty sure he was just one mistake away from hopping on the wrong subway and disappearing into Queens forever.
A few more trains passed by before Bart checked his phone for the time. He then turned to Tommy and asked, “So… which one’s ours?”
Now in a much less tired state, Tom nodded his head towards the train just pulling up to the platform and pulled his ass off the armchair.
“This one. Come on!”
Once the subway train stopped at the track and opened its doors, Tommy and Bart lifted the armchair and rushed it to the car. Somehow the impossible was achieved and they managed to get it in with significantly less hassle then with the turnstile. And by the grace of the subway gods there were not too many passengers on this particular train.
“Alright, set it here,” Tommy said as he lowered the chair.
Just like before, Bart did what he was told. Once the chair was down on the ground, there was just enough time for Tommy to flop himself onto the cushions before the subway doors closed. The train began to move as Bart found a nearby seat.
While Tommy reveled in a well-earned rest, Bart looked out the window to see nothing but the moving darkness of New York’s underbelly. Internally, he compared it to the Bay Area Rapid Transit system he used back at university, the train he had gotten used to riding for the last two years.
Frankly, the smells and vibes were all the same, the only difference being that New York’s trains were a lot louder and more prone to two young men feeling a bit silly that day.
Speaking of which, Bart glanced over to Tommy, who was grinning from ear to ear as he took in the sight of the Speedster on the train.
“Look at you, Allen!” Tommy said enthusiastically. “Lookin’ like a real New Yorker already!”
Bart let out a chuckle. “I don’t think so, I haven’t yelled ‘I’m walkin’ here!’ at a total stranger yet.” Upon hearing his attempt at an angry New York accent, Bart internally noted that his Christopher Walken impression needed some work.
“True, true,” Tommy replied, shrugging and leaning back in his chair. “You’ll probably do that by the end of the week.”
Bart gave a smile as Tommy looked at his newfound chair. Now that he wasn’t trying to catch his breath or cursing like the Brooklyner he was, he finally had time to bask in the glory of a good deal.
“Damn, can you believe the quality of this thing?” he said as he ran his fingertips against the pristine, unblemished leather of the chair. “NYU trust fund babies really spare no expense.”
Bart chuckled, amused. “I’m gonna assume that you’re not an alumni?”
“Me? Nah, I’m too smart for that,” Tommy laughed off. He crossed his legs as he settled into his seat, then pointed to his chest with both his thumbs. “Hunter College, represent!”
“What’d you study?”
“Music… with an emphasis on composition and performance,” Tommy said with an air of ease. He then shrugged. “‘Cause why the fuck not, right?”
The Speedster let out a laugh. Bart had only been friends with the better-looking Wildcat for a handful of days, but during that time he learned three specific things about Thomas J. Bronson.
He played a multitude of musical instruments and sang like a young Chet Baker. He worked two different shitty bar jobs while attending college part-time. He also had a killer stash hidden inside of his room at the Brownstone, something he used as both musical inspiration and to help him cope with the unbearable stress of being alive.
Apparently, the old farts of the JSA were okay with it — their only complaints pertained to the smell.
Taking in a breath of the not-so-fresh New York underground air, Bart quickly checked his phone. He swiped away a few of his university emails, promising himself to read them later, and quickly answered a text from Jesse, who was asking where he was. Unsurprisingly, Jay had wondered where Bart had run off to but was too technologically inept to figure out his smartphone and send a text.
Smirking, Bart made sure that his reply was as blunt as possible. Knowing Jesse, it was very possible for her to interpret "riding the subway with Tomcat and an armchair we took from NYU” as Bart messing with her, which was exactly what he wanted.
“So… when are you graduating again?”
Bart looked up to see Tommy still relaxing in his chair.
“Year and a half,” he replied as he slipped his phone back into his pocket. “Why do you ask?”
“Just curious,” Tom explained. He sat up in his chair just slightly. “I think it’d be cool if you came by more often, we could do more shit like this.”
“Well, nothing’s ever far from me,” Bart assured with a simple smile. “I’m sure I could find the time no matter where I am. New York is pretty sick.”
“Yeah, lived here my whole life,” Tom said. He placed one of his hands behind his head. “It never gets old, just more expensive.”
Bart did not hesitate to nod along. “Oh, definitely. Why the hell is boba eight dollars over here?!” he said in genuine disbelief. “The economy’s in fuckin’ shambles!”
Somehow, Tommy managed a laugh, which prompted Bart to do the same.
He had visited New York in the past, and every time he had been utterly enchanted by the city that never sleeps. In his heart he had held some affection for all the places he had lived — Manchester, Keystone, Central, Denver, even his sporadic stays in San Francisco — but there was something alluring about New York.
There was a kind of spark to the city that Bart couldn’t deny, a spark that reminded him of the thunder in his heart before each adventure. He felt it in the sounds, the sights, and even the smells, as pungent as some of them may be.
As Bart gave Tommy a smile, his mind pondered the possibility of New York being in his post-graduation future. Most people in his university department headed straight to Silicon Valley to begin start-ups or work for them, but the ones who didn’t either went to grad school or found their calling elsewhere.
Bart wondered if his future could be the same. Many of his professors spoke at length about how much they enjoyed earning a master’s degree, some had gone on to study robotics while others had synthesized their engineering skills to explore the field of applied physics.
Over the last few months, Bart had caught himself rifling through grad school brochures more than once.
Sure, more school meant more tuition and Bart didn’t want to abuse the Official Bank of Jessica Belle Chambers for longer than he should. Besides, Jesse and Rick were likely putting away some money for little Johnny’s college fund. The last thing Bart wanted to do was to harm the future of his favorite nephew.
Perhaps Bart would be lucky enough to find his own way to make it through. A dual degree in electrical engineering and computer science could certainly get him places, even if it was just a bachelor’s.
New York was certainly one hell of a tech hub. Heck, during his first breakfast at the JSA Brownstone, Power Girl herself had encouraged him to apply to her company after he graduated. Apparently, Starrware prided itself on its robust, fulfilling internship programs specifically tailored towards fresh college grads. It would have to take a force of lovecraftian proportions to refuse an offer like that.
It would also be nice to have a reason to be near the JSA again.
“Yo, we’re comin’ up soon,” Tommy spoke, his words breaking Bart out of his thoughts.
The Speedster glanced over to see Tommy standing up from his chair. Bart blinked as the mumbled, canned subway audio announced that the train was approaching Bowling Green station.
“Come on!” said Tommy, and to that Bart nodded along and got onto his two feet.
Fortunately for the plucky duo, the process of taking their precious armchair off the subway was slightly easier than getting it back on. Just like before, the stream of New Yorkers matriculating onto the platform paid no attention to the two randos carrying an armchair off the train.
Bart looked to Tom for guidance again. The Pretty Boy Wildcat led the Pretty Boy Speedster to the nearby staircase, trying to not drop the chair as they went. Tom sucked in a breath as he and Bart worked together to slowly move the piece of furniture upwards, moving step by step to avoid death by staircase tumble.
Once they got to the top, Tom and Bart set the armchair down on the ground as they both looked upon the next obstacle standing in their path — the final turnstile.
Tommy sucked in a breath as he glared at the gate, staring at it like it was the final boss in a video game he had sunk too many hours into.
“Alright, just one more to go…”
He then looked towards Bart. “Yo, in engineering, you learn like… physics and shit too?”
Running a hand through his hair, Bart nodded. “Yeah, it’s part of the course.”
“Good, then put that to use!”
Without warning, Tom grabbed his side of the chair, prompting Bart to immediately do the same.
As the pair of pretty boys made haste and rushed the armchair towards the turnstile, Bart held his breath as he prepared for the unknown. In the few seconds before truly hitting the barrier, Bart let out words that — amongst the chaos — he prayed that the subway gods would hear.
“And they say university is hard…”

Navigating the Big Move: Finding Top-Notch Moving Services in NYC
Tumblr media
New York City, with its bustling streets and dynamic neighborhoods, presents unique challenges for those looking to relocate. Whether you’re moving to a new apartment in Manhattan, transitioning your office space in Brooklyn, or simply shifting to a new location within the five boroughs, understanding the nuances of moving services in NYC is crucial. This blog will provide a detailed overview of moving services, focusing on the specific needs of NYC residents and businesses, and offer tips for finding the best local moving services near you.
Why NYC Requires Specialized Moving Services?
The Unique Challenges of Moving in NYC
Moving in New York City comes with its own set of challenges. High population density, narrow streets, and limited parking can complicate the moving process. According to a report by the New York City Department of Transportation, managing logistics in NYC can be more complex than in other cities due to these unique urban conditions.
Factors Contributing to the Complexity of NYC Moves:
Street and Parking Regulations: Navigating NYC’s street and parking regulations requires careful planning to avoid fines and ensure smooth access to your new location.
Elevator and Stairs Access: Many NYC buildings have narrow elevators or no elevator access, which can impact the moving process, especially for larger items or furniture.
High Traffic and Delivery Windows: Traffic congestion and restricted delivery windows can affect the timing and efficiency of your move.
Types of Moving Services in NYC
1. Residential Moving Services
Residential moving services in NYC cater to individuals and families relocating to new homes. These services typically include packing, loading, transporting, and unpacking personal belongings. For NYC residents, choosing a moving service that understands the unique logistics of the city is essential.
Advantages of Professional Residential Moving Services:
Expert Handling: Professional movers are experienced in navigating NYC’s complex logistics, ensuring that your belongings are handled with care.
Efficiency: With their knowledge of local regulations and traffic patterns, NYC movers can complete your move more efficiently.
2. Commercial Moving Services
Commercial moving services are tailored for businesses relocating office spaces, retail stores, or other commercial properties. Commercial moving companies often involve additional considerations such as the safe handling of sensitive equipment and minimizing downtime.
Benefits of Using Commercial Moving Services:
Business Continuity: Professional commercial movers can minimize disruptions to your business operations.
Specialized Equipment Handling: Expertise in handling office furniture, electronics, and sensitive equipment ensures everything arrives safely.
3. Local Moving Services Near Me
Local moving services focus on moves within the same city or region. In NYC, local movers are familiar with the city’s layout and can provide efficient and cost-effective solutions for short-distance relocations.
Why Choose Local Moving Services:
Knowledge of the Area: Local movers have a deep understanding of NYC’s neighborhoods and logistical challenges.
Faster Service: Proximity allows for quicker and more flexible scheduling.
Finding the Right Moving Services in NYC
1. Research and Compare Moving Companies
When searching for moving services in NYC, it’s important to compare different commercial moving companies based on their services, pricing, and customer reviews. Use online platforms like Yelp and Google Reviews to assess the reputation and reliability of moving companies.
2. Check for Licensing and Insurance
Ensure that the commercial moving company you choose is properly licensed and insured. In NYC, moving companies should have the appropriate permits and insurance to protect your belongings during the move. The New York State Department of Transportation provides a directory of licensed movers.
3. Get Detailed Estimates
Obtain detailed estimates from several moving companies. Look for transparency in pricing and understand what services are included. According to the American Moving & Storage Association, detailed estimates help prevent unexpected costs and ensure you’re aware of the full scope of the moving service.
4. Ask for Recommendations
Seek recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues who have recently moved to NYC. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into the reliability and quality of moving services.
“Moving in New York City requires more than just physical effort; it demands careful planning and expertise in navigating the city’s unique challenges. Choosing a local moving service that understands these intricacies can make a significant difference in your moving experience,” says Anar Mammedov, a commercial moving consultant.
Benefits of Using Professional Moving Services
1. Stress Reduction
Hiring professional moving services can significantly reduce the stress associated with moving. From packing to unpacking, professional movers handle the logistics, allowing you to focus on settling into your new home or office.
2. Time Efficiency
Professional movers are trained to execute moves quickly and efficiently. They have the tools and experience to smoothen the moving process, saving you time and effort.
3. Protection for Your Belongings
With professional movers, you benefit from proper packing techniques and insurance coverage, ensuring that your belongings are protected throughout the move.
Conclusion
Choosing the right moving services in NYC is crucial for a smooth and successful relocation. Whether you’re looking for residential, commercial, or local moving services near you, understanding the unique challenges of NYC and researching your options will help you make an informed decision. By selecting a professional commercial moving company, you can ensure that your move is handled efficiently, with minimal stress and maximum protection for your belongings.

An incomplete list of things that have gone wrong since my move to a new apartment and city two weeks ago:
Moving truck and car both ran out of space and we had to throw out a bunch of shit we didn’t intend to (this is on us for underestimating how much we had accumulated in six years)
The super didn’t leave us the elevator key to lock it for the movers to use
The city didn’t provide the promised “no parking” signs to reserve space for the moving truck in front of the building on a narrow, one-way street
The movers dropped and left a massive hole in the back of one of my bookcases
The movers also broke the Edison bulb in my floor lamp off in the socket and lied about it, so I was just convinced I bought the wrong size replacement bulbs. Twice. Before noticing the fucked up corpse of a lightbulb base in the lamp and removing it with needlenose pliers (thanks, crafting!)
In unpacking, found that the beautiful wool cable knit sweater I spent an entire year knitting in college and was very proud of was infested with some sort of insect and had to throw it out.
All frustrating but manageable, yes? BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
No hot water for the first FULL WEEK we were here
When they sent a plumber to fix the hot water, he saw that the air conditioning unit was flooding the utility room, so we had to turn it off. It’s been four days and it’s not fixed because they need access to something on the roof but…
…they can’t get to the roof because the key is gone and no one in the building or management company knows where it is
(PS the hot water fix is a workaround because it ALSO isn’t venting properly through the roof)
To keep the air circulating while the water heater is borrowing air from the apartment while its roof access pipes are blocked or whatever (I am not a tradesman, I am relaying what the professionals have told me), we are supposed to keep a window cracked. When we tried to do so, we found that the double-hung windows were installed incorrectly, and if you try to open them, the entire top pane drops violently. There is no screen on the top portion of the window.
(This is notable because there are A LOT of insects flying around in this area right now, none of which you would want in your apartment)
The dishwasher is broken
The drains are not draining
We partially moved here so I could start working hybrid, and today, for what would have been my fourth in-office day, well, let’s just say that I did NOT make it in, and that might have something to do with what the New York Times referred to as a “doom loop for NJ commuters” with delays in ALL types of transit into Manhattan ranging from one to four hours. People were jumping out of buses inside the Lincoln Tunnel. I opted to work from home in my unairconditioned apartment, where the thermostat was registering 84 degrees. Which could technically be worse, but certainly wasn’t pleasant.
Took a break from work and decided to run an errand locally; went to the garage to find our car straight up GONE - after several hours of panicked calls with the management company and reporting the car stolen (because the management company said they didn’t call a tow truck on us), turns out we’d read our move in packet wrong and were in the wrong spot, and instead of calling the super or building management to ask us to move, our neighbors CALLED THE COPS and had us TICKETED AND TOWED. Which they are very much not supposed to do by building standards but isn’t technically illegal, just shitty behavior. And since we hadn’t driven in 9 days because we’re trying to use public transit as much as possible (when it’s running, anyway), the car had been held by the tow company for 5 days by the time we saw it was gone and it cost us $500 to get it back, plus $56 for the ticket.
And the most horrendous thing about all of this? I’m still happier than I’ve been in YEARS, because New York and I have been in an on and off abusive relationship since 2007 and she is one of the epic loves of my life.
Oh, also our rent Is fucking ASTRONOMICAL. Welcome home to me.
