🔥 Bonfire Night, a date specific to the United Kingdom, remembers The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when Catholic conspirators, of which Guido Fawkes was a member of the collective of 13, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to kill King James I (The Jacobean Era). The goal for this plot was to aid in restoring a Catholic Monarch to the Throne of England.
🔥 After the 16th Century religious Reformations, particularly the 1536 English Reformation under Henry VIII breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church which increased the authority of the Church of England under Protestant ideals. These beliefs were particularly heavily enforced during the reign of Henry VIII's son, Edward VI, though the severity of these later reformations are generally often incorrectly attributed to his father's Henrician Reformation.
🔥 The Tudor reign and Jacobean rule was difficult for Catholics as persecution was rife, though this increased further after the failed plot. Robert Catesby, the man in charge of organising the Gunpowder Plot wanted to replace the Protestant King James I with a Catholic Monarch.
🔥 Despite popular belief, Guy Fawkes was not the leader, he was the Member found first as his job was to set off the fuse for the 36 barrels in the cellar beneath the Houses of Parliament.
🔥 Originally the bonfires were to celebrate the foiled attempt, however, over the centuries it is often commonplace for people to now celebrate the Plotters.

This scene might not be the most pleasant, but hey, it’s a treasure trove! Our fidgety boy is interacting with everyone and everything in his vicinity... Look closely: there’s a serious conversation happening in the foreground, but what’s his right hand doing in the meantime? Every little wall has been, shall we say... banged.
The other thing is the Scouse accent and its wonderful melody... In the last interview, Shaun teased us with the statement that women are put off by his accent (nice try, Evans, but I don’t think anyone bought that…).
I think in everyday life his accent isn’t as strong, but in that scene when he says "didn't occur to me," I just completely melt.

The Beatles in Australia/NZ, part two (part 1, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9)
John and Paul talk to Bob Rogers about their rain-soaked arrival from Hong Kong and Paul’s reputation with the ladies
Bob: I'm sorry that the weather was so shocking, it could not have been worse John: Well, it's different, in’it? You know Bob: Is it like that in Liverpool? John: No, I've never... not as hard as that rain, I've never seen that, except for in Tahiti Bob: What? Rain in Tahiti? John: Yeah, it rained there a couple of days when we first got there, thought it was the end of the world, it was like a monsoon Bob: How did you feel about getting wet through like that, I mean that was a great thing to do for your fans John: We were having hysterics laughing, it was so funny, coming to Australia and getting on a big van all soaking wet, you know? And at least... the kids got wet for hours, you know so we only got wet for about a quarter of an hour, which is not much compared to that, is it? Bob: What upset me, John was the fact that you were wearing those new coachmen coats, or batwing coats for the first time - they must be ruined John: They're not actually, we got them pressed as soon as we got in, they're alright Bob: The Hong Kong tailoring is alright, then? John: Well, he was an Indian, actually Bob: Paul, what was it like out there on the tarmac? Paul: Err, yeah it was a bit of a pity actually, cause I was thinking 'Well, showing off my flash suit,' but it just got soaked through Bob: I've just been advised, and Paul told me that this was not going to happen, that your next release in America is going to be a song called 'A Hard Day's Night', it will come out on the 26th of June John: Erm, I think 'Long Tall Sally' is the next release in America Bob: Well, according to Cashbox this week it's 'A Hard Day's Night' John: Oh, ok, well I give... you know more, I only know... Bob: No, well that's true John: ...I only know what happens in England, you know, because they all make their own singles out of the LPs everywhere else Bob: Say something for the Australians John: 'ello cobber, how's the wagga wagga? It's all I can say, didgeridoo and all that Bob: Thank you, John Lennon Bob: Paul, you're probably the lady-killer Beatle... Paul: Oh, come on... Bob: What is your impression of the Australian ladies? Paul: Very nice Bob: Why are you always surrounded by the ladies? Paul: Erm, 'cause I'm... chatting 'em up. Chatting 'em up here. Bob: What does 'chatting 'em up' mean? Paul: Pardon? Bob: What does 'chatting 'em up' mean? Paul: Aw, come on... Bob: It's a pommy expression - you're in Australia, mate! Paul: Look, we invented the language. What are you talking about? Bob: What, the Liverpudlians invented it? Or desecrated it? Paul: Well, no... us British chaps Bob: Ah, yes Paul: Yes

👟 The countdown is on for the 'Run To Anfield' 5K — a new charity event from the LFC Foundation.
👟 Almost 1,000 keen participants have already signed up. The event is a fun run and not officially timed as a race, so people can run or walk.
👟 The 5K starts and finishes at Paisley Square at Anfield Stadium, before taking scenic route round Stanley Park. Once runners have crossed the finish line, they will collect their bespoke finishers’ medal.
👟 The fundraiser is being organised by the LFC Foundation, official charity of Liverpool Football Club, with event delivery support from independent race organiser BTR Liverpool.
👟 The Run To Anfield 5K takes place on Sunday the 8th of September 2024.

Christian Slater is an inspired choice. I really liked his work on Mr. Robot, and would like to have seen his version of Ricky Roma in the London production some years back
Thank you! His work in Mr. Robot was my prime consideration, in fact, although True Romance, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Name of the Rose, and Interview with the Vampire lend plenty of pertinent meta (not to mention his friendship with River Phoenix). What a phenomenal show that was. I was lucky to catch a glimpse of him in person while they were shooting the final season in Grand Central. It was the dead of summer, and my mom and I saw throngs of people milling around the concourse dressed in down jackets and carrying Christmas-themed shopping bags. We were incredibly confused until the camera crews came into view. Glanced over our heads and there he was on the Vanderbilt Hall balcony.
P.S. he played Ricky Roma in London?! Holy shit. I was unaware of this piece of Mamet lore, I somehow missed that entirely. Would have killed to see his take on it. And beyond that, how a Mancunian director interpreted such a profoundly American script/story.

okay i’ve calmed down and here are some thoughts:
loreen is an amazing artist and if we have to win again i’m glad it’s her. she now one of only two two-time winners and put us up there with ireland with the highest total wins. the song is beautiful but it’s no euphoria; i also think this year’s competition was a bit weaker (literally the same thing as when måns won lol) so she stood out bc of her high quality song and the fact that she’s loreen. but in the grand scope of things i don’t think it can reach the same iconic status as some of the other winners.
anyway i’m a bit terrified of the prospect of having to sit through another sweden-hosted esc…. the second hand embarrassment is too much. i hope they try to do smth creative with it and make it more, idk, epic and artsy instead of the attempts at being funny bc those are always the worst.
#anyway i actually thought bbc did a good job this year w the hosting. some things i didn’t like sure but overall#idk who we would have as hosts but @ svt i am begging you leave måns out of it this time. and petra too#i actually liked farah in this year’s melodifestivalen. just a suggestion#eurovision liveblog#oh yeah and i watched it w my parents and my mum’s favourite was belgium.#also my dad was so disappointed they didn’t perform ferry cross the mersey during that interval act w liverpudlian songs
