Kate was actually loosing her sanity. Watching you dance with her teamates in the crowd of this sticky old bar room. She felt absolutely feral. The way your gold sparkly top reflected patterns around the room, you were almost a discoball. Not to mention the shirt was on the smaller side. Kate was never one to judge, infact she almost liked the shirt a little too much for someone whos "just a friend".
After a few drinks it didn't take much persuasion to get Kate off her barstool and into the crowd. Dancing and bopping along to the music with Caitlin as she watched you talk to some guy. Seems like he liked your shirt too. She felt like a crow, overly interested in shiny objects. She knew you didn't want to talk to the guy. He was ugly.
Maybe it was the drinks, or just her inner crow. Her intoxicated brain dragging her over to where you stood against the wall. She wrapped an arm around your waist, her hand playing with the bottom of your shirt. She cuts in immediately, "Heyyyy Cait says we need to leave. like now." She wasn't sure where this absolute bullshit lie came from. It was a Friday, there was no game tomorrow, no practices, no classes. Nothing.
She looks down at your confused face, than over to the guy you had been chatting with. "She threw up in the parking lot." Kate is a terrible liar. The statement came out fast and flustered. Cait had barely touched a drop all night, something about her new training regiment. However, it seemed to suffice your equally intoxicated brain. You began to make your out of the stuffy room and into the parking lot.
Looking across the half empty parking lot, there was no sign of Caitlin. "Kate what? Where is Caitlin?" You sounded genuinely concerned and Kates guilty conscious started to kick in. The cool breeze blew your hair into your lipgloss, the moon perfectly lighting up your face. And your shirt. Her eyes flicked over you briefly, landing on your lips before meeting your eyes. You pulled the hair off your lips. "Uhh.. I don't know." She took step closer, her hands reaching up to run her fingers over the sequin straps on your shoulders. "I like your shirt." Her eyes once again meeting yours. She quickly licks her lips. "...thanks...I-" Suddenly it hit you. Your toes were basically touching. Her hands playing with the fabric of your shirt, watching the sequins and beads roll in her fingers. "Kate we... I can't..."
Kate looks up again. "Why not?" Suddenly Kate understood liquid courage. You were silent. You didn't know why, maybe you could? I mean you really really wanted to. "You're drunk..." "So are you..." Silence fell over the parking lot. No cars, no birds, not even the wind.
Suddenly you heard the bar room door bang open, loud music and light pouring out from inside. Both of you took a frantic step away from eachother, looking towards the door. Out stumbled a very drunk Gabbie and a sober Caitlin, "Guyyyysssss I ordered an uber, we need to go back to the dorms Caitlin is sooo drunk.." Gabbie basically yelled it across the lot. The three of you exchanged a look.
As the Uber pulled out of the parking lot, the four of you sat in silence. Well, the thee of you did, Gabbie talked the whole way back into the dorms. After getting Gabbie into bed, you walked Kate and Caitlin to the door of your dorm. "Text me when your back in your dorm"
Kate just looked at you wide eyed, guilt still lingering on her face. Why, you had no clue. Nothing really happened.
Caitlin wished you a goodnight, promising to text you back and meet up for breakfast tomorrow to debrief.
Closing your dorm door, you sighed to yourself. Tomorrow was going to be interesting.

Little Gold Top (Part 2): Kate Martin x Reader
Summary: What does your morning after debrief with Caitlin reveal? (Part 1) (TOC)
Warnings: Alcohol, slightly explicit, Cliffhanger!
Tumblr media
The sun poured through the windows of the IHop as you made your way to the corner booth in the back of the resturant. Caitlin giggled at you as you as you slumped into the booth. "Well goodmorning to you too! Seems like you had a long night." You glared back at Caitlin across the table. She flashed you a toothy grin.
The two of you had made it a tradition to always meet up for breakfast after nights out. Ever since freshman year, no matter how hungover or still drunk we were the next morning. We always made it to IHop.
After ordering a copious ammount of pancakes and talking for another hour about the Psych major Cait has liked since last year, Caitlin asked the question you have been dreading. "Sooo... you and Kate huh?" You felt like ripping the stuffing out of the booth cushions and shoving it down her throat. "I saw you two in the parking lot last night, what was that?" Maybe it would be more efficient if you ate the booth cushions instead?
You were silent for a moment. What even was that last night? The silence, her hands playing with your shirt, the eye contact, her breath on your lips. What did you even mean by "I can't?" You guys were friends. Best Friends. Nothing more. You didn't have feelings for her that weren't platonic. Did you?
You looked up from your hands which you had been fiddling with under the table. "Uhh... I don't know." Cait blinked once at you. "What do you mean 'I don't know?'" You let out a sigh and looked out the window at the cars flying by on the freeway. Glancing back at her, you swirled the straw in your drink. Listening to the ice clink against the glass. "I think we just had a moment...probably just the alcohol. I mean, we are just friends..." Cait looked skeptical.
"So your saying you wouldn't kiss her?" You looked at her wide eyed, "Cait!" "You know I heard she's good with her hands, she never misses a shot. Great control of the ball-" "Actually shut the fuck up-" You glanced around the surrounding booths to see is anyone had heard Caits teasing. You playfully shoved her shoulder "You're the worst!" She just grinned back at you. "You're blushing." Rolling your eyes at her, you got up from the booth "Shut up!"
The drive back to the dorm was silent. Your head was still pounding from last night, but you couldn't stop thinking about what Cait said. "I heard she's good with her hands..." Who did she hear that from? You could feel your mind wandering to thoughts of Kate's past girlfriends. Kate's hands were pretty big, veiny too. Probably would feel good- Nope. You pulled into the parking lot infront of your dorm, turning off the engine and unplugging your phone from the unused aux. Upon unlocking your phone, you saw the second thing you had been dreading all morning. A text from Kate. "Hey can we talk?"

Halloween Sophmore Year
Messy. You and Kate have always been messy in your head. The two of you seemed to only exist together when the both of you were black out or high out of your minds. You couldn't exactly recall the number of times her hands had dropped below your shoulders and into your pants, or the ammount of times you had hungrily kissed her. Or the ammount of times you would wake up alone and find some article of her clothing forgotten on your floor.
This would mark one year since the first time you had woken up in her dorm. Maybe you were silly for remembering this. The thought lingered in the back of your head as you got ready. Maybe it was basic of you to go as a black cat, but your only goal tonight was to get drunk enough to forget your latest fling. Another masc, indie, art major with bleach blonde hair. You had ended it last night. You took another shot before drawing your whiskers on with eyeliner. "You need to slow down, you're gonna get drunk before you even get to the party." Gabbie looked at you disapprovingly. She truly was your other half, but right now you didn't want a voice of reason you wanted Kate you wanted to be drunk. You rolled your eyes at her as you walked out of the bathroom, pulling on your shoes.
"God finally you guys are ready, can we leave now?" Caitlin immediately shot out of her chair, walking towards the door in her cowboy boots. You could feel Kates eyes glued to your exposed thighs as she complemented you and Gabbie on your contrasting costumes. Just a reminder of how you knew this night was going to end. Jada walked up to you with a big smile on her face "well don't you look cute!" You giggled at her enthusiasum and her little mouse ears, everything is funny when you're a little drunk, "we need some hot pics tonight for my insta!" You guys had dressed up as a cat and mouse for the second year in a row. You grinned back at her, "Yesss of course!"
As the five of you made your way down the dorm halls and out towards the frats, you found your eyes drifting towards Kate. You continued this action throughout the night, constantly finding her dumb unicorn horn above the crowd. She fucked you in the back of her car that night. You think that was the last time it truly meant nothing. You were both hammered, neither of you really remebered anything from that night. Atleast you didn't. Just the fog on the windows and the pop song blasting through her crappy toyota corolla speakers.
New Years Sophmore Year
After Halloweekend, and multiple more blackout party weekends with Kate, you decided to go sober. No more blackout weekends, no more greening out in random basements, no more Kate. Emphasis on no more Kate. Over a year of useless hookups, it was time to move on. Find something serious. Maybe a brunette, short, fem with brown eyes and a vowl at the beginning of her name. No more blondes.
You repeated this like an oath in your head as you knocked on the apartement door. Kate and Caitlin had moved into an off campus apartement together over break. Their first "to do" was to host new years. Clad in a black mini skirt and a gold croptop you shivered in the hall. The door swung back, revealing the one and only Kate Martin. "Hey..." You stared up at her. Distance really does make the heart grow fonder, the purple lights from inside the apartement cast an odd glow into the badly lit hallway. "You cold?..." She reached a hand out to graze over your arm, shamelessly staring at your boobs sequined shirt. The air felt thick, not in a sexual tension way. You felt like you could see the longing through her eyes, the need for something more. Maybe you were just projecting but suddenly in her eyes you saw children and a big old farmhouse with a pickett fence.
"So are you gonna let her in or are you just gonna let her freeze out there?" As Caitlin poked her head around the corner Kate snatched her hand back as if she had been burned. She stepped to the side, letting you shuffle into the warm apartement.
You remeber that night clear as day. You succeded with 2/3 of your goals. However, you made one critical mistake. You let Kate walk you back to your dorm. Alone. She wrapped her thick coat over your shoulders as you two walked silently. The random hookups had really put a twist on your relationship, but it gave you a weird sense of safety. You were fine with the silence, you were fine with her holding your hand, you were fine with her eyes constantly drifiting towards your shirt. You looked up at her "I think I owe you an apology." she glanced over at you, pressing her lips between her teeth before looking back at the ground. "What do you mean?" You were silent for a minute before looking up at the sky. "Well you know... this last year... I haven't really been a great friend." You stopped walking and stared expectantly at her face, admiring the slope of her nose and the deep blue in her eyes. She hesitated again, you could see something brewing behind her eyes as you felt your gut sink "Wanna make it up to me?" You stared up at her as she stepped closed, gently wrapping her arms around your waist as she pulled you in for a kiss.
You two took it up stairs, tripping over your dorm carpet as she pushed you back towards your bed. That night wasn't messy. Well i mean... You remebered every moment, her sweet hands, every "I love you" you murmered against her neck, all of it.
When you opened your eyes the next morning you expected to feel a warm Kate in bed with you. However, you woke up to an empty bed. You could feel your heart crack as it hit you that you would never truly have Kate. At least not how you wanted.
After this, you decided to limit your interactions. This quicky backfired. You would go to the bars with your friends and watch from afar as Kate would have a few and take some random girl home. You were always convinced they looked a little like you, maybe you were just desperate for a sign. They deffinately looked like you. During practice Kate would overcompensate to try and distract from your terrible attitude towards her. You would refuse to pass the ball to her or even look at her, and she would just laugh it off, until she couldn't find it funny anymore. After a while, the team just came around to the idea that you and Kate just weren't friends anymore. You both played pretty terribly. The season ended pretty quickly after that, and you didn't see her until next fall.
Junior Year First Team Dinner
The deja vu as she walked you back to your apartement was intense. The silence wasn't comforting, instead it seemed to loom over the two if you. She didn't hold your hand or wrap her jacket around your shoulders. She didn't even look at you as she spoke, "For the well being of the team..." She looked up towards your apartement door, "I think its best we start fresh." Kate stopped walking and turned to face you, face blank. Internally, you wanted to rip her head off. Yell at her and blame her for the fact that you two got this bad. You knew it wasn't solely her fault, but for your mental well being it was 100% her fault. You reached the front door of your apartement and she stared at you expectantly. You didn't bother meeting her eyes as you spat back "Whatever you want Kate, just leave me alone." You walked into the lobby, leaving her outside in the cold.

Little Gold Top: (5) Kate Martin x Reader
Summary: late night dorm confrontations and impulsive decisions
(Previous) (TOC)
Warnings: sad confrontation, wtf, not proof read!
AN: guys i officially have a fanfic author life, like shits crazy!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Practice was rough. Kate knew it was rough by the way the coaches were whispering on her way out of the gym and how Caitlin looked at her in the locker room. Kate was supposed to be the captain, the glue that holds the team together. With everything going on lately she couldn鈥檛 help but feel that she was loosing her skills. Not to mention, an incredibly talented teammate.
She couldn't decide if it was worth it to double text you. Flipping her phone over again, she was met with her unanswered text. Her attempt to fix whatever the fuck was wrong. Is anything even wrong? Flopping into her bed she stared out the window, watching the sun dip below the trees. The idea that at the end of the year she would be graduating, you two would probably never even live in the same city again. She couldn鈥檛 help but feel a bit existential.
Quickly this existentialism turned to fear. Wrapped in her comferter headphones pumping Frank Ocean she couldn't help but think about how different you were. Not in a pick me way, but in an emotional way. Kate was always a bit of a hopeless romantic. Plenty of times she's seen a girl in the hallway and planned their futures together. But when she thought about you, she saw everything. You were everything.
As the street lamps outside the dorm flicked on she felt the pit in her stomache return. You were so close, probably only two minutes away; but you've always been so far. Sure the two of you had been physically close, and physically you two knew eachother like a married couple. Emotionally, Kate had no fucking clue who you were. And it killed her. It would probably only take her three minutes to get to your appartement. A two minute run down the street, up two floors, about fourty steps off the elevator to the left, room 203. Kate could see it in all her head. She would knock and you would open the door with a big smile. You would pull her inside and you would watch UP! on the couch and you would tell her about your day. She would listen and love every second of it. The way your hair falls on your shoulders, the way the light from the tv refletcs off your face, the way you light up as you tell her about the dog you saw on your way to class. She would even love the chocolate on your face from the icecream you would eat and your really long monologues about subjects she dosen't really understand, all because she loves you. She really really loves you, and she is so fucking scared.
Kate could feel the panic building in her chest as she swung her feet over the side of her bed. Pulling her shoes on she slipped out of her suite into the kitchen and out into the hallway. Where she was going she wasn't sure, just somewhere, wherever her feet took her. Into the elevator, down two floors. Running through the chilly night air she could feel the tears biting at her cheeks. Into the lobby, scan the emergency key card shes kept since freshman year, into the elevator, up two floors, fourty steps to the left.
Your Pov
You hadn't slept yet. You were deffinately tired, exhausted actually, but whenever you closed your eyes you just saw the missed shots and then Kates face. Neither of these were the right mateiral to lull you to sleep. Sitting on your couch, you let the tears flow. nothing seemed to be going right so far. Fuck Kate for not being able to keep it in her pants. You don't think you've ever been so upset with someone before. You don't think you've ever had someone like Kate before. Techincally, you don't even have her.
The pounding at your door startled you from your haze. You contemplated just opening the door without looking and letting the serial killer in. Maybe he would watch UP! with you, or put you out of whatever meta hell this is. You walked towards the door, stopping to grab a knife in the kitchen. Just incase.
Looking out the peep hole you were met with none other than Kate Martin. You glanced at the clock on the stove. 2:05, late enough to pretend to be asleep. As she started banging again you heard stirring from the room down the hall. dammit shes gonna wake Gabbie up. You unlocked the chain and lock and flung the door open. Stepping outside and shutting the door behind yourself. Kate seemed shocked to see you, funny seeing that she was the one breaking your door down.
"Okay, what the actual fuck-" "I love you." You snapped your head back to look at her in the eyes. For once, everything was silent. You gently dropped the kitchen knife as you reached out to grab her shoulder "Kate what are you talking about?" She shrugged away from your touch, "please I just... I need to... I-" You could feel your heart tear a bit everytime she failed to find the words. You left your hand out like a statue and watched as the tears streamed down her face "God I don't know, I'm scared I've fucked us up. We can't be done yet we have so much left I-" She palmed at her damp cheeks, attempting to dry the tears. Her hair was frazzled, still in the ponytail from practice. It was far too cold for the PJ shorts she was wearing and you couldn't help but wonder if she was cold. "-and I'm sorry it's so late I was just thinking that we have never watched UP! together, and I don't even know your middle name and I have been such a shitty friend!" "Kate, its so late can we-" "No! because I need you to listen. What kind of friend fucks the girl she loves in the back of a toyota? What the fuck happened to us?" "Kate!" You didn't often raise your voice, so it caught her off gaurd. You were most actually speechless.
You felt the emotions of three years of unrequited love pressing behind your eyes. Pulling her by her arm, you dragged her inside. She followed you like a lost puppy. Locking the door behind you pulled her to the couch and threw her a blanket. "Just sit there, and don't say a fucking word." She looked over at you with big eyes, and you pretended not to watch her as she sat awkwardly on your couch. You turned the kettle on, staring at it waiting for the water to boil. Maybe you could just incinerate yourself in the oven? You peaked over your shoulder to see her passed out on the couch, curled up with her head on the arm rest. You poured yourself a cup of tea, turned off the kettle and gently padded over to the couch. Turning off the lights you found your way to a spot on the opposite end of the couch.
Through the darkness you could see the curve of her shoulders, her blonde hair falling over the fuzz of the blanket. Truly a sight you could never get sick of. She really was the prettiest girl you knew, probably the prettiest girl ever. Everything seemed so complicated, these past years with Kate seemed so simple in the moment. Now it just felt like a big mess. How do you even fix this? What even are we fixing? Maybe that was a tomorrow problem. For now you were just happy to have her here.

Little Gold Top: (3) Kate Martin x Reader
Summary: A game of hide and seek and a tense practice
(First Part) (Previous)
Warnings: kinda drama tbh, langauge, bad grammar
AN: This chapter has been re-written so many times in loosing my minddddd.... Also loving the new Billie album 馃┑馃┑ expect flashback chapter next bc i need to actually provide context
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kate felt like she was loosing her mind (and her best friend.) She flipped her phone over for the third time in the last five minutes, checking to see if you responded. She was met with the text message she had sent you yesterday. No reply. Groaning she let her head slump back against the couch pillows. The dim light from the tv flickered across the dorm room, the sun had set a while ago and Kate hadn't found it in her to turn a light on yet. The noise and colors from the TV seemed to just float by her as she stared at the wall behind the TV.
She couldn't help but let her mind wander back to the parking lot. The dim orange-yellow street lamp that highlighted the tip of your nose, reflecting off the gold sequins. Your wide eyed expression as she stood just a but too close. You guys hadn't done something like that in a while. Kate always knew you were pretty, she always knew that she needed to be careful. Self control is not a quality that drunk Kate posseses.
Teams don't work without communication and right now Iowa Womens Basketball would flop on the court without you. She already missed the opportunity to pretend the parking lot incident didn't happen. She rolled off the dorm couch, searching for a hoodie and a pair of shoes. If you weren't going to reply, then she would simply just hunt you down. She was just being cautious. Careful. It was for the best interest of the team.
As she stalked through the halls of the science building she tried to formulate a good excuse for just running into you in the science building at 6:53 PM. She had already went to your dorm, but she didn't hear you inside and it was still too early for you to be alseep. As she passed more empty rooms she could feel her breath picking up, she quickened her steps. She couldn't help but feel like she had royaly fucked everything up again. Just like sophmore year. What if she can't find you? What if you guys can't move past this? Shes graduating this spring its not like you guys will ever get the chance to play for the same team again. She reached the last classroom, swinging the door open, she was met with another empty lab. She slumped against the hallway wall, sinking to the ground. She could feel the tears prick in her eyes as dropped her head into her hands.
POV SWITCH
You felt your phone buzz against the matress. You had a long day of successfully dodging both Caitlin and Kate. You even skipped practice. You told coach it was the frat flu, she deffinately knew you were lying. Your strategy was to let it all blow over. No need to be dramatic, or turn it into something its not and never will be.
You loved Kate, she was your very best friend. But she could fuck you up to no end. Freshman and sophmore year were stained with confusing feelings and multiple parkinglot-esque interactions that were all just swept under the rug. So why she was trying to talk about it now was beyond you.
You wouldn't even call it a situationship, you two never kissed. If you had you couldn't remeber it. You would deffinately remeber kissing her. Flipping your phone over you were once again met with the same text from Kate, and something new from Gabbie that caught your eye.
"I just ran into Kate in the science wing?? She seemed pretty upset so I am going to bring her back to her dorm. I will be back in like 20!"
Deffinately an odd text for a monday after 7. Why would Kate even be in the science wing? Unless she was looking for you? It really wasn't that big of a deal you guys were fine. Right? You slumped back against your pillow clicking off your lights. You didn't sleep much that night.
TIME SKIP
CAITLIN POV (bet you didn't see this coming)
"What the actual fuck" was the only though floating around Caitlins head. She knew she wasn't alone in this thought as she made eye contact with Gabbie from the bench. Cait knew she was in for a long practice when Kate came in with headphones on and nothing to say. Gabbie had told her about her run in with Kate in the science hallway last night. Cait couldn't ignore the sinking feeling in her gut as she watched you walk through the gym doors, make eyecontact with Kate, and promptly look away.
The gym was on the quiet side as Caitlin ran through streaches and warmups. The tension was heavy, and it wasn't the fun type. After a quiet streach and warmup, Caitlin watched Kate airball four easy shots in a row and throw a handful of easliy intercepted passes. However, Its not like you were doing much better as you seemed to be intentionally avoiding Kates passes and not going for any of her rebounds. Shortly after you nearly ate shit during conditioning.
Coach Lisa was not happy, and neither was Caitlin. The whole situation just reminded her of how the two of you were during the last few weeks of Sophmore year. Not speaking, avoiding eachother at all costs and consequentially dragging your team through the mud. Cait was sick of you two behaving like children, but more than anything she wanted to know what happened in the parking-lot.
