Day 11 - Moray & Salt Flats

In the morning, we said goodbye to Aguas Calientes and walked to the actual train station to board our train, not the middle of town where the had dropped us off. While we waited for the train, I wrote in my journal and drafted blog posts.

On the train, we tried Peruvian candies, including a tutti-fruity dinosaur egg and gummy dinosaurs. The dinosaur egg was disgusting and everyone spit them out and the gummy dinosaurs were unimpressive.

We arrived at Ollantaytambo where Ever, our loyal driver, met us with a G.F.U. sign and led us to his van. As we passed through the central square of Ollantaytambo, we saw a massive tent constructed with all of the mothers of the city sitting beneath it. Others were lined up passing gifts towards the tent in in a fire brigade style.

On the way back, we stopped at a little homestay for lunch.

They gave us flower necklaces; mine had 52 flowers on it. (I only settled on this number after counting them wrong many times. This was the mode, so I stuck with it) The first course was potatoes and cheese, which we stacked with salsa.

The second course was a wheat soup with potato. The salsa was excellent on this as well. The main dish was mashed potatoes, chicken, and quinoa prepared like fried rice.

We drove a short ways to Moray, an archeological site with concentric circular terraces. Because of the way the wind blows over it, this creates microclimates perfect for growing different crops.

We walked from the first and most impressive circles to two others that haven’t been reconstructed as much.

On the opposite side of the site, Ever met us with the van and we continued onward towards salt flats on our way back to Cuzco.

We stopped at the salt pools which cascaded impressively down the hill. There’s a salivated hot spring there and water flows into all the pools and is left to evaporate. It’s harvested, iodized, and sold.

I learned how to eat a passion fruit. It was a lot of work and not well suited to being done in a car.

We were exhausted by this point and after we checked into our rooms, we opted for takeout.

We walked down the thin street by the hotel as multiple cars came from both directions in a game of chicken, a remarkably common occurrence on the streets of Cusco.

I got Salchipapas from a local Mexican food place. It was great in concept but poor in execution. It consisted of potatoes and meat. I topped it with mayonnaise and ketchup as well as Guacamole leftover from Bernadette’s tacos.

We hung out and ate our food at the hotel. Holly picked up desserts for us, including a banana cake, an orange cake, and a large strawberry alfajor. The banana cake tasted like a mix between banana bread and oatmeal bake, but not as sweet as either. The orange cake and the alfajores were both great!

Day 1:

After having done the Hai Van pass I thought this would be a similar experience. And boy was I wrong. The motorbikes werent as big and there was no confy seat in the back to not literally get a pain in the ass. So it was a simple motorbike and we had to hold our hands at the back of the bike where our backpacks were put. Naema was able to just put her arms around her easyrider. Well I wasnt. It felt weird so I jusz didnt. And lets just say great workout while actually not doing anything. For the arms and especially my belly. I cant really describe it but the way you sit on the bike and try not to fall down.. that was the workout. And yes after a day we could feel our butts quite a bit. But enough about that. Why is this trip so incredible:

You get to see such a beautiful nature. Mountains everywhere, the road and waterfalls. And the fresh air in youe face. I often put my hands in the air, closed my eyea and imagined I was flying. Amazing feeling. As my easyrider always went first I even had the better view with noone in front of us. Just the road.

Every half an hour we had a break to enjoy the view but also for the riders to get some rest. Sometimes there were many other groups with up to 25 or 30 people partying. Still glad we went on a solo trip for this one. One of the stops was a small village where we were able to see Mong ethnic minority women in colorful clothes making linen from flax. Extrenely impressive how long tbis process actually take. And how many steps it takes.

We got to see many limestones that are part of the UNESCO world heritage and stopped for a beautiful view to see the roads of the loop while also seeing locals - mostly children- wearing baskets with yellow flowers in it. All in alm a great first day. It was really foggy at the beginning but it started to get way better in the afternoon. Because believe me... if itvis foggy, doing the loop is not really spectacular. You wont be able to see much..

Before arriving at our homestay for the night we biked a little further to get so see the chinese border - from far away.. other groups make it all the way to the tower that is right at the border.. sadly we did not. But we gor to see the long fence on the other side of the mountain. Crazy feeling to see China so nearby. Whoever has a good eyesight might be able to see the fence. I am pointing at it :) Maybe this will be our next travel adventure? Its still on my list to be standing on the chinese wall. Lets see where life will take us to.

The closest we actually goto china was by bus on our way to Ha Giang. Here is the proof:

Anyway. Great forst day for the Ha Giang loop. And we got exzrenely lucky with our homestay. While other geouos share a big srom, we got a peivate room with a view over the town. And some great dinner with our easyriders and the owners of the homestay.

My Love affair with Shergaon – The Charming Hamlet of Arunachal Pradesh

Shergaon – A name I did not know until about recently, must be a month or two before we planned our trip to Arunachal Pradesh. And yet here I am, dreaming of the days we spent in this quaint little village in Arunachal Pradesh. A place blessed with remarkable natural beauty and a temperate climate, but more than that the most wonderful people with hearts of gold.  A little stroll under the morning sun, moments of solitude by a waterfall hidden inside the forest and incredible warmth shown by people to two strangers in their land – I fell hopelessly in love with Shergaon.

Why Shergaon became my favourite

The Natural Beauty

Shergaon is blessed with unparalleled natural beauty. It is cradled by lofty mountains. River and brooks with the clearest of water flow joyously through it. Farmlands and fruit orchards brimming with life dot the landscape. Even the wild flowers and different shrubs add so much to the charm of the place. And at some places, manmade wooden and iron bridges adorned with prayer flags make it look just like a postcard.

What I loved more is that Shergaon is not yet very commercialized.  We did not see too many home stays under construction like we later saw in Dirang. The natural beauty is still intact and it is the perfect place to explore by foot, to take life slow and to relish everything nature has to offer.

The Stay experience

It was late evening when we reached Shergaon. So our first experience of Shergaon was the warm welcome of our hosts into the homestay. After a cup of hot coffee, we joined our hosts by the traditional heater called Bukhari, that is part of almost every home in this cold region. Delicious smelling chicken curry was slowly cooking on the Bukhari and the atmosphere for conversations was set.

Our host offered us some home made rice wine and while we sipped on it, he explained the nitty-gritty of the wine making process from fermented rice. Then the topic shifted to local culture, lifestyle and festivals of the village and how it has helped shape lives in the region. We ended the evening singing together some beautiful Bollywood and Odia oldies and enjoying a hot home cooked meal. It truly felt like being part of someone’s home and we went to bed happy and excited about what Shergaon would reveal the next morning.

The Hidden Waterfall

Choskorong waterfall is like a hidden treasure of Shergaon. I say hidden, because the waterfall is located inside dense foliage away from the main road and is not visible to the outside world. It requires a little hiking (not very difficult) to reach the waterfall. And on the day we visited, there was no other soul around. Just the two of us, sitting under a tree overlooking the falls, entranced by the beauty in front of us. Prayer flags fluttered in the winter breeze. A little birdie was flying around merrily, and the sun peeped through the tree branches swaying in the wind. It felt like a different world, a world away from all the chaos. We stayed there for almost 45 mins enjoying that solitude, with hearts full of gratitude.

It is not just the waterfall that is beautiful, even the walk to that fall offers lovely views, passing by cutesy wooden bridges, streams and a fruit orchard. The orchard looked so colourful with the leaves of the Persimmon trees turned Orange and many trees laden with Persimmons. The last part of the patch was a bit steep, but felt absolutely worth treading when it opened to the view of the waterfall. It took us around 30 mins to reach the fall from the main road. But vehicles can go till the farm and then a 10 min hike can take you to the source of the fall.  What an experience it was! Read the full blog Here….

     After the trip to Inazuma, our beloved traveler comes back to their homestay of Mondstadt. Finally able to rest from the boat ride across the ocean and the people you had to talk to in Liyue and let alone Yanfei trying to see any legal documents you had from there, you were ready to rest. Though like a moth drawn to a flame, the towns bard had set his eyes on you and already set up a plan within his head.

                    A Flower Bud

      Stretching your arms above your head until you heard a pop and sighing as you let them slump down, letting your hands rest on the top of your head. Taking in the sight around you, smiling, it had been a while since you were home. Opting out to walking home instead of just taking a waypoint was a better choice, but the ache in your legs and feet told a different story. 

    Only being a short bit from the city gates you had just continued to walk the rest of the way. Almost as if Barbatos could sense you near, the wind passed by in a gentle breeze that pushed the loose hairs to tickle your face. Letting out a small huff you picked up your pace a little, walking faster towards the bridge. 

     It was like the moment you got close to the city, exhaustion began to set in and a yawn escaped your mouth. Upon entering the gate you saw the familiar faces of the townsfolk. Fiona was tending to her flowers, the blacksmith creating his newest masterpiece, and Katheryne sitting at her normal post at the guild.

     Giving Katheryne a small wave before making it up the middle path of the city. You would’ve just kept walking, maybe to the Cat’s tail to get a room, but you got interrupted by a voice calling out. Turning your head you were met with a gust of wind and a energetic bard. Though you were tired, a smile made way to your face as you looked at him. “Oh hello Venti” you said, fully turning to him.

     “Well hello there Windblume! You look wonderful day if i must say ehe~” with his signature laugh he gave a close eyed smile. As a soft smile adorned your face you spoke with the retired archon about your journey. Without realizing you were stopping to get food, stop into shops here and there, as well as having passing conversations with the people of Mondstadt.

     The thought of going to sleep had slipped your mind as the day begun to pass. More so the reason it slipped your mind was because of your own return itself. It seemed everyone came out of the woodworks as night began to fall. The kids have gone to bed and the street lights were lit with their golden glow. At some point within your journey throughout the city you had met up with a few welcoming faces.

     While heading out of the church after they had a small chat with Barbara, they passed by Kaeya who was having a conversation with Mona. Upon seeing them, they joined the duo and continued their walk towards the main city streets. Passing down the right stairs two figures could be seen walking out of the knights headquarters. The Acting Grandmaster herself, Jean, and of course the wonderful woman we know as Lisa standing beside her holding a few books and loose papers.

      “Just what do we have here~ A bunch of cuties to greet us? How wonderful~” Lisa’s illustrious voice spoke out. Even Lisa was powerful enough to bring a small blush to Kaeya’s face as you all gave a greeting. Venti was quick to invite the two of them to join you as he suggested to go to angels share, most likely as we all know, to drink. Before anyone could say anything Kaeya was quick to answer as he grabbed your hand and begun to walk towards the tavern.

     As you all got closer the light smell of alcohol reached your nose. As the drunkards who sat out front could be heard laughing amongst themselves they saw the group and gave a small wave before going back to their antics. Letting out a small laugh you turned your head back to the group as they began to walk in.

     To no surprise Kaeya and Venti were already bothering Diluc for wine. Diluc was about to reject them before he saw you and sigh before agreeing to bring up drinks for everyone. Getting up to the second floor it was empty enough that you could pull another table together for everyone to fit. 

     Sitting down you were at the end of the table next to one of the many windows, which were left cracked to let the night air pass through. It wasn't long before Diluc had come up with drinks for us and sat at the table himself. “Are you joining us brother? Didn't see as one to be for the social scene” Kaeya said slipping next to him. 

     “I'm still able to take your wine away.” With that quick comment Kaeya as he had entered, slipped away and back to the seemingly already drunk bard. laughing under your breath. You looked around to the rest of the table, the others were talking with each other, sharing a laugh with one another. It brought a smile to your face, as tired as you were, you were happy that you stayed, not everyday you get this.

     As the night grew darker and the wind turned colder, the party continued. Diluc kept the tavern open a little longer then he originally intended, but for our lovely Traveler, he’ll keep it open for as long as you need, for him to admit it is another thing. Jean and Lisa watched and laughed as the two infamous drunkards leaped and danced around the second floor as Diluc tried to stop them, Mona was simply enjoyed the food that was brought out along after the drinks.

     “Say cutie, what are you doing tomorrow-” Lisa turned to ask you only to be met with you fast asleep on your hand as you stared out the window. “Seems like our honorary knight has fallen asleep” Jean said smiling at your sleeping form. “We should probably get going soon, I don’t want us to intrude on to master Diluc anymore then we have” Mona commented cleaning up the dishes and cups. “Thank you Mona, but you don’t have too. I am still the owner of this place at the end of the night.” Diluc joined in on the cleaning as Mona continued after she stated she wanted to. 

     As they put the table back in its original spot they bid each goodnight as Diluc walked them out. Walking back upstairs to the second floor to shut the windows Diluc spot two figures. Venti was seat in front of you as you slept, still staring out the window. He had a hand reached over twisting and turning the loose strand of hair between his fingers. Sighing Diluc went back down the stairs and around the counter. 

     Pull out of his thoughts by a cough, Venti looked to see Diluc standing before him holding a set of keys. “They are to the room upstairs, take them while I'm feeling nice.” smiling venti took the keys as Diluc gently picked you up from your seat at the table and carried you upstairs. Unlocking the door venti held it open as Diluc slowly carried you in, being careful not to bang into anything, before laying you down gently on the bed. 

     “I’ll be right back, I’m going to get a glass of water and bring it up” Diluc said after he had laid you down and turning around. “Oh thank you, but I'm still pretty sober ehe~” Venti said to Diluc who in returned kept walking, “It wasn’t implied it was for you, bard.” “ehe-” standing there in shock for a moment before he moved towards the bed and laid next to you. That might of been a bad idea because as soon as he laid down and got cozy next you he was out.

     Coming back up the third floor with two glasses of water he almost dropped them when he saw the bard sleeping along side you. Sighing he set one down on Venti’s side before he walked to your side to set the other down. Though right after he did and was about to leave, a hand shot out and grabbed his sleeve, trying to pull him back. Looking back he saw your hand reaching and, key word, tried to pull him down to the bed, but being half asleep didn't really help your cause. 

      For what seemed like the hundredth sigh from Diluc, a small smile appeared on his face as he sat down on the edge of the bed, removing his boots before leaning back and resting next to you. Venti was peacefully sleeping to your left, leaning on your shoulder and hugging your one arm with a smile on his face as he snuggled closer to you. Diluc let out a huffed laugh before he fully laid down and wrapped an arm around the both of you as much as he could before using his arm as a pillow for your head. 

      It almost seemed like he passed out faster then Venti because as soon as he pulled you two closer it was lights out for him. So as the moon rose high in the sky, I guess you could say, moonlight is what makes the flower bud grow, but we don't need tell them that as you awake for a moment and wink at the “non existent camera”

Again though, it’s only a flower bud, it still needs time to grow ;)

A Good Nurse

Wilmina Mavis was a person who enjoyed causing pain and she was going to die soon. There are many other things to know about her but those are the first and most important on the list. 

Ms. Mavis was a career woman working in pharmaceutical research until about six years ago when she was retired. Or was “retired”  but the end result was the same; decades of working and no real financial strain gave Ms. Mavis quite the little nest egg and she went about her days doing what she liked to do. 

It started going downhill when her former maid, Ingred or Mary can't remember,  was rushed to the emergency room with a compound fracture in her arm- a total accident where the longtime employee slipped on a top step and the bottom met her quite enthusiastically. A very generous severance payment later, Ms. Mavis was on her own again. She kept it together for a few months until a well-meaning neighbor found her outside on a sidewalk with a rolling pin in hand and a bathrobe draped around her pajamas.

No children, no friends and nobody willing to take care of her in her ailing health I was called to her doorstep with a smile and a suitcase; since then she has been trying to kill me as much as I've been trying to keep her alive.  We're about equal in score currently; I’m not certain who decided to call me to her aid, as from her vehement attitude she’s very unhappy to have me in her territory but that’s just reasonable. From living on your own with only a weekly maid coming in to tidy after your messes to a full-time roommate that was legally bound to looking after you can feel rather stifling. 

It may be my looks: my jaw was broken many years ago, a drunken altercation I wasn’t supposed to be involved with when I first started working seventeen years ago. The bar wasn’t able to pay my medical bills as an underage worker wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place and my jaw never set quite right again, a visible mar on my otherwise plain face. Aside from shallow reasons, I am the ideal nurse in situations like with Ms. Mavis, who doesn’t want help and is willing to resort to quite a few actions to avoid it. Kind, patient and very thorough, I am the picture-perfect homestay nurse.

And stay at home I did! Ms. Mavis rarely leaves her abode, especially now that she has younger hands running errands for her, so I spend my time tending to her shady garden plants- the low ones she can’t get on her knees to tend to anymore- and cleaning hard to reach places, taking great care to avoid triggering her traps hidden in the house. I think she’s getting frustrated, as the more lethal variants are showing up, with their hair-trigger responses garnering my even more hair-trigger dodging. She hasn’t used explosives yet, but I feel it’s only a matter of time before she cares less about the mortgage than seeing me as a smear on her wall. 

Every now and then I let her more prank-like traps trip, leaving minor burns on my hands and face, a cut or two on my arms. Once I even let her break a finger using one of her silly mousetraps! It’s hard to be so understanding sometimes.

I never thought I’d be a nurse when I was younger; I figured I’d work as a secretary until I found a decent fella and settle down. I knew I wasn’t seen as the prettiest flower in the garden but statistics said that someone’d pick me. Well, that is until one side of my mouth was very suddenly set horizontal in a way it shouldn’t’ve by a man who punched harder than an ass kicked. Mr. Robert Tillman, what a nasty fella; been a time since the last time I thought about a previous patient of mine. I happened to meet him again shortly after I got liscensed, after he sent one of the agency girls packing with a cast. The man had an unfortunate car accident, paralysed him and spoiled an already rotten attitude. The out-of-court settlement also granted him a nurse as he learned to live with his new life, an action that led him to meet me again.

Seven years and some weight gain had evidently let him forget about the teenager that he mangled, and with no shine in his eyes he cussed me and my family line for a full minute before I got to go about my chores. This wasn’t my first job as a nurse practitioner, as I got to work at a nursing home for a few months before the agency reassigned me to Mr. Tillman but there wasn’t anything to worry about; I am a very good worker in any assignment.

For months I cleaned up after Mr. Tillman, learning to dodge from his hobby of throwing bottles whenever some sports team of his was failing. Months Mr. Tillman and I learned how best to live together, though evidently Mr. Tillman was learning more about how to better vent his anger on his surroundings. Bottles to fists to words, many things were thrown with various levels of skill until Mr. Tillman finally seemed to acknowledge that not only was I faster than him, I was faster in a way that seemed effortless and we fell into a stalemate. Despite all this, I learned to love my job. I love the way I can see Mr. Tillman’s movements ease from their original stiff movement, the way his face shifted when I tested his legs for responses. I learned to love the minutiae of cleaning, of fixing. Of mending.

Nine months with Mr. Tillman and we fell into an easy, well easier, routine and I would go to the grocer once every week to stock up on fresh vegetables, sausages and beer for Mr. Tillman. Evidently one of his former victims or just someone who hated him broke in during my shopping trip and just laid into him; broken ribs, fingers and a dislocated jaw only extended the time I had to spend tending to the now-voiceless man, the only noises I’d hear were wheezes that I assumed were meant to cuss me out even further from his sunken face. After all, how could I let this happen to an upstanding man such as him?

Mr. Tillman began to refuse to eat after a few weeks of his jaw being forcibly shut and he started to visibly wither even further until I got permission to force-feed him from the agency. Frothing and drooling he fought every meal I poured down his throat until one day I found he committed suicide by lunging off a tall porch side and I was sent to another patient. Then another, and another and I began to be sent to the “difficult” individuals due to my excellent work with the company in exchange for a larger paycheck and far better health insurance. Both were very useful and very necessary in my career.

And my career led me here, to Wilmina Mavis. For all the faults that my job has, I can’t deny that I very genuinely love it.

Jin Mi & Lan Sizhui: Jin Mi has been around the mortal realm more than once, usually as a mortal, though...the deity and her husband have decided that the mortal realm is a much kinder place to be than the heavens. Might not be what mortals want to hear though. While Jin Mi might not be able to see colours there’s still something peaceful and ethereal about her despite her and her husbands modest living. A small little homestay, a few animals...Jin Mi grows flowers, while her flowers are sought after and expensive they’re often bought by people for special occasions. She gives flowers to the local sect leaders disciple for his wedding but you know who your wife to be is right because Jin Mi sure as hell knows.

Selphie & Lan Sizhui: No encounter with the sorceress has ever gone well for the team, though Selphie might be the unlikeliest. Flung from the float during the attempted assassination of the evil sorceress, flung through space and time Selphie found herself in the past. To be fair, she will credit the sorceress with the intelligence to simply fling her enemies somewhere they can never reach her again...though time has never been a barrier for her. In fact. It’s the one thing that she wants her hands on. How do you make the people you meet believe that an evil cultivator from the future is going to attempt to collapse space and time and finish the world. Erase everyone and everything. Somebody got to believe her right? Even if it is the weird kid with a headband. 

Ma Zhaixing & Lan Sizhui: The daughter of the former princess of a fallen dynasty, married to the crown prince Ji Chong, though it’s a matter of business...not love, and they both know it, despite how much they care about each other. An attempt to combine military power and unify kingdoms to prevent all out war, turning down the throne to focus on keeping the military peace, Ji Chong and Ma Zhaixing set out to visit the sects, to try and make sure that their well earned peace is not turned on their heads. Ma Zhaixing sees promise in the teens, at least they seem to understand the kind of scars and destruction she is trying to prevent. Her family slaughtered in front of her, twice, Ma Zhaixing finds it heartbreaking...that she was not the only one to suffer such a fate, she’s determined history will not repeat itself. 

Denzel & Lan Sizhui: A gentle child, one of the youngest disciples, one of the few souls to have reincarnated backwards, out of sync with the world around him. Sometimes he tells strange tales about his dreams, about living in a place where the sun is covered up. In a town that falls out of the sky. Where everyone gets sick. It’s put down to an overactive imagination, while Lan Sizhui entertained his gibberish for a while, theres moments of detail that are too well, detailed, to be made up. He starts to suspect that the kids not full of it. 

Joker & Lan Sizhui: Lan Sizhui’s immortal verse while he’s living and working at the temple. A group of school children on a field trip arn’t all that unusual, though, a few of them are a bit weird. Hanging around in a group together, whispered questions to each other, the kid with the glasses is most certainly the ringleader and while he’s a smooth talking his questions are odd. The kids know there’s a palace in the metaverse here, they’ve assumed it’s Lan Sizhui’s but they couldn’t be more wrong.
