The knowing
You probably thought that you'd break my heart; you probably thought that you'd make me cry. But it's okay…I swear, it's okay.
Because I know everything.
Everything.
I know everything.
Everything.
I think of our sister of sorrow, the keeper of pain and betrayal. She holds this pain with grace and beauty. She takes wound after wound, dagger after dagger. She delights in the pain because she understands that it makes her stronger. She is silently aware of all their wrongdoings. She allows it to exist in her space, a heavy blanket of darkness cast behind the horizon of her gaze. A single tear falls from her eye – a moment of weakness. She is overwhelmed by this sensation. It haunts her. The knowing haunts her. To pick from the tree of knowledge is to subject yourself to a life of torment and suffering. But what happens when we spot the fruit we must bear and do nothing? You let it fester and ferment until it rots and plunks down to your feet. Its rotted juices seep into your shoes and stick to your skin. Though you walk away committed to your ignorance, the juices of truth stick to you and the steps you take. These juices leave a trail in the dirt, showing others where you go to hide. You can’t hide now. You know, and now they know.

This early exposure to diverse customs and perspectives laid the groundwork for Ishiguro's later exploration of cultural nuances in his literary works. Growing up amid the fusion of Japanese and Western influences, Ishiguro developed a unique cultural lens. The traditional ceremonies and rituals of Nagasaki provided a sense of continuity, while the Western world represented a realm of exploration and adaptation. This dual cultural immersion became a crucible for Ishiguro's artistic identity, shaping his narrative voice and thematic choices in the realm of literature.
Educational Journey
In the late 1950s, Ishiguro's family embarked on a transformative journey, moving to the United Kingdom. Settling in Surrey, England, Ishiguro found himself navigating not only the academic corridors of his new home but also the intricate corridors of cultural integration. His educational journey became a bridge between two worlds, offering him a rich tapestry of experiences that would soon find expression in his writing. While attending Woking County Grammar School, Ishiguro's thirst for knowledge expanded beyond the classroom. The enchanting landscapes of Surrey became a backdrop for his intellectual explorations, laying the groundwork for his future literary endeavors. This period of cultural adaptation and academic growth would later inform the nuanced perspectives embedded in his novels.
Literary Beginnings
The spark of Ishiguro's literary journey ignited during his university days at the University of Kent. Studying creative writing and philosophy provided him with the tools to articulate the stories brewing within his creative mind. The vibrant literary scene at the university became a playground for experimentation, where Ishiguro started weaving the threads of narrative that would eventually define his unique storytelling style. The initial struggles and triumphs during these formative years marked the birth of a literary craftsman.
Breakthrough with "The Remains of the Day"
The zenith of Ishiguro's literary ascent was marked by the publication of "The Remains of the Day" in 1989. Maybe none of us really understand what we've lived through, or feel we've had enough time." - "The evening's the best part of the day. You've done your day's work. Now you can put your feet up and enjoy it." - "It was like when you make a move in chess and just as you take your finger off the piece, you see the mistake you've made, and there's this panic because you don't know yet the scale of disaster you've left yourself open to." - "We thought we were young and that there would be time to love well sometime in the future. This is a terrible way to think. It is no way to live, to wait to love." - "I think of my pile of old paperbacks, their pages gone wobbly, like they'd once belonged to the sea." - "What is pertinent is the calmness of beauty, its sense of restraint. It is as though the land knows of its own beauty, its own greatness, and feels no need to shout it." - "You have to accept that sometimes that's how things happen in this world. People's opinions, their feelings, they go one way, then the other. It just so happens you grew up at a certain point in this process." - "Music brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing mind and muscle from their endless wintering." - "I am what I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I’ve ever had."

in response to the book questions: 2, 4, and 23
First of all, thank you for asking!
2. A book you’ve read more than three times. That would probably be a selection of Emily Dickinson’s Poems (for college, I’ve read some books more than three times, but those do not count because it was for necessity).
4. A guilty pleasure book.Young adult/fantasy series that are socially seen as trash literature, such as the Twilight Series. I read those books when I was 14 and I still like them (even though I haven’t read them in ten years). They are not a masterpiece and have lots of defects, but the series is entertaining as literature should be.
24. A book you wish more people would have read. Can I cheat and say more than one? I wish more people would have read Alice Sebold’s work, especially Lucky, Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian and Mika Waltari’s The Egyptian.

Enter my decaying & romantic blog of horror & the sublime
My name is Victoria Addams and I am a descendant of that delightful and much-loved troupe, the Addams family. They have once again reappeared in popular culture with an animated movie, and I am pleased they are not forgotten, lost to the mists of collective memory, barely remembered except at Halloween and when that catchy theme song comes on.
I am a little more intellectually-inclined than my relatives, and lately I have found myself increasingly interested in the concept of the Gothic in literature, film and television. Obviously as an Addams I am more than qualified to look into this concept, and so wish to share my passion and research here for any who wish to come along for the journey.
Because the Gothic is not just black and white make-up with black clothes, or vampires and poison and gloominess - you’re only thinking of Richmond of the IT Crowd. The storied Gothic is something else, a feeling, an atmosphere, a succession of a particular kind of events. It can, but does not always, include elements of horror, death, and romanticism. But it must also contain a sense of the sublime, an indescribable feeling that takes us beyond ourselves, outside of ourselves. This is the feeling that any good writing can create in a reader (or viewer), but that the Gothic genre is built around. This genre is not built for sequels or to be cinematic, it goes against the mainstream, even outside of it altogether, and that is why my delightful cousins are often the only exposure you mere mortals have to the whole delicious, decay-ridden concept.
So welcome, readers, to the Victoria Addams blog for exploring the Gothic in literature, film and television. If you have suggestions or recommendations I will gladly add them to my slush pile, where they will age and decay, becoming a gorgeous background prop, more ‘shabby’ than ‘chic’.
Until next time, V. Addams
