Trains Suck in the USA
So, in America, our inter-city/interstate train service SUCKS. I’m sure individual cities run well enough, but I am not talking about those. I am talking about the trains that go from sea to shining sea.
Let’s start with the first issue:
Amtrak.
They are, and always have been, a notoriously awful. They either need to be dissolved (which is my preference) or overhauled by breaking them into regional pieces. E.G. Amtrak East, Amtrak West etc. I suggest breaking them to bitty bits because maybe if it were smaller, those in charge would be able to get something done. They’d all still answer to a centralized office and tickets would be good cross sectors but the trains themselves would be under the purview of each segmented office. It could also promote friendly competition by seeing which section can ACTUALLY MAKE SURE THEIR DAMN TRAINS ARRIVE ON TIME.
Issue 2: Rails to Trails.
We need to stop that shit NOW. “Why don’t we have rail service to XYZ?” because we ripped up our train tracks for walking trails. You want trains to be a good contender for public transit, that initiative (should it still be in existence) needs to go. I’m not saying walking trails also need to go. Far from it. Make more of those WITHOUT ripping up the train tracks.
Issue 3: The Freight Companies OWN the rails.
 In my trip across the US from Eastern Seaboard to the South West, the train I was on had to stop because the freight trains have right-of-way, because the freight companies own the damn rails.
The only solution I see here is going back to what we used to do: It was all ONE train. No Passenger or Freight only. MIX THEM. Have passenger cars mixed in with non-volatile freight.
Your chemical and oil trains can stay on their own, thank you very much. The only liquids that should be mixed in with people are ones we can safely drink (as all liquids are drinkable at least once).
Issue 4: The USA is DAMN big
I often see it brought up by pro-train proponents that about how some countries, like France or Japan, have good rail service.
Yeah and France is around the size of Texas and Japan is similar in area to West Virginia. It’s easy to have good rail service when your country DOESN’T span across a major landmass and you can put a country’s worth of effort for rails in that smaller space. Hence when in my Amtrak section, I suggested breaking it into bits.
It wasn’t just because Amtrak is awful, it was the fact we have a rather large landmass here in the USA.
As for fixing that issue (aside from breaking up Amtrak) I think that there’s the sticking point. We can’t shrink North America (even if some days it’s fun to joke about slicing off Florida or just waiting for the Big One to knock California into the sea).
It would take a large investment to do this and it would have to be a proper investment not some political garbage of “I’m going to give this place in the middle of nowhere a brand new monorail to....this rock!”
No. It has to be actual, focused on the train service between the states and cities and nothing else. Maybe a train refresh. Maybe a renegotiation with the Freight companies.
Make the rails a proper alternative to the roads.
This will mean that it can’t necessarily be a “green” revitalization. It just needs to be done, without gimmicks.
That’s why this won’t happen.
Politicians love to talk a big game but they lack the capacity of getting their heads out of their collective asses to care about what we on the ground need. They can never just get things done.
Can it be made environmentally friendly? I’m sure it could but that can’t be the end-all-be-all if you’re trying to get the trains more efficient in the here and now. Just focus on making interstate travel by train not suck first and worry about the planet later. Earth could kill us any time she likes. Remember that.
Besides, efficient train service would still be a major eco win. Less cars going coast to coast (and with trains going more frequently, it might also help with shipping too and getting big rigs off the roads) and all that.
So, Tl;Dr—Trains suck because Amtrak sucks, we ripped up our rails, freight companies own what’s left, and the USA is damn big.
The way to fix this would be to focus on making trains viable alternatives first and worrying about the planet later.

As the Cygnus S.S. Laurel Clark spends its first days berthed to the ISS, the successor to the Antares 230+ launch vehicle that launched it is taking shape in the facilities of Northrop Grumman (NG) and Firefly Aerospace.  The Antares 330/Medium Launch Vehicle (MLV), scheduled for its first flight in mid-2025, is being developed to conduct ISS cargo flights from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops Island, Virginia. Its development started after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 crippled the existing Antares supply chain.  Antares 230+ and its predecessors used Russian engines and a Ukrainian-built first stage. The Russian engines are unavailable after Western nations, including the United States, applied sanctions, while the Ukrainian factory responsible for the first stage has been attacked by Russian forces. The Antares 330, based on a brand new first stage with seven Firefly Miranda engines using kerosene and liquid oxygen, is designed to use the existing launch and processing facilities that supported the S.S. Laurel Clark and most other NG Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract flights. Like earlier versions of Antares, the 330 will fly from Launch Pad 0A at Wallops. The facilities at Wallops that supported the original Antares launches are being modified to support the Antares 330 and MLV rockets. Like the Antares 230+, the Antares 330 will use the Castor 30XL solid rocket motor for its upper stage as well as the same payload fairing. The MLV is a follow-on vehicle that will use the Antares 330 first stage along with a new liquid-fueled upper stage sporting a vacuum-optimized Miranda engine. Like other vacuum-optimized rocket engines, the upper stage’s Miranda engine will feature a much larger nozzle than the first stage engines will use. Both stages will use graphite/epoxy tanks with a common dome, as well as the aforementioned NG MACH avionics. The second stage will be the same diameter as the first stage, while the carbon composite fairing will have a diameter of 5.2 meters along with pneumatic separation fittings and actuators. Lightning has been successfully used on the Firefly Alpha rocket, while work that had gone into the Firefly Beta concept will now be used with MLV. NG had offered three optional third stage choices for earlier Antares vehicles, but those vehicles never saw other customers besides NASA for anything more than small CubeSats. The MLV’s current listed payload capacity is up to 16,000 kilograms to a 200-kilometer circular low-Earth orbit inclined 38 degrees to the Equator. The MLV’s fairing meets NSSL Category B requirements.  The MLV is also planned to be offered for NASA Launch Services Program missions and Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) flights, which are higher-risk and lost-cost NASA satellite missions. Private satellite constellations, commercial space stations in low-Earth orbit, and US Department of Defense Rocket Systems Launch Program flights are listed as possible MLV clients as well. The MLV is joining an increasingly crowded field of competitors in the medium launch services space. Rocket Lab’s Neutron, which is partially reusable, is specified as having similar capabilities to the MLV – not to mention launching from just a half-kilometer away from Pad 0A – while the ULA Vulcan, Arianespace Ariane 6, India’s LVM3, and Japan’s H3 will also be competing for launch business. The action by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia follows an investigation of 1st Adult & Pediatrics Healthcare Services Inc. by the department’s Wage and Hour Division that found the company and its owners, Carolyn Bryant-Taylor and Kafomdi Josephine Okocha, willfully denied the affected workers overtime wages by paying them straight-time rates of pay for all hours worked, including hours over 40 in a workweek. Investigators also learned the employers did not keep required payroll records, a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Despite the division’s findings, 1st Adult & Pediatrics Healthcare Services, Bryant-Taylor, and Okocha refused to pay the back wages and damages owed to the workers.  In September 2022, the department’s Office of the Regional Solicitor filed suit to recover the monies owed. Adam Selipsky, CEO of AWS said, “Water scarcity is a major issue around the world and with today’s water positive announcement we are committing to do our part to help solve this rapidly growing challenge,” He further added, “In just a few years half of the world’s population is projected to live in water-stressed areas, so to ensure all people have access to water, we all need to innovate new ways to help conserve and reuse this precious resource. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we know there is more we can do. We are committed to leading on water stewardship in our cloud operations, and returning more water than we use in the communities where we operate. We know this is the right thing to do for the environment and our customers.” AWS has been driving four key strategies in pursuit of becoming water+ by 2030: improving water efficiency, using sustainable water sources, returning water for community reuse, and supporting water replenishment projects.

AWS is constantly innovating across its infrastructure to reduce water consumption. It achieves its industry-leading water efficiency by using advanced cloud services, such as Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, to analyze real-time water use and identify and fix leaks. AWS further improves operational efficiency by eliminating cooling water use in many of its facilities for most of the year, instead relying on outside air. For example, in Ireland and Sweden, AWS uses no water to cool its data centers for 95% of the year. AWS also invests in on-site water-treatment systems that allow it to reuse water multiple times, minimizing water consumed for cooling.  
Sustainable sources.
AWS uses sustainable water sources, such as recycled water and rainwater harvesting, wherever possible. Using recycled water, which is only suitable for a limited set of applications such as irrigation and industrial use, preserves valuable drinking water for communities. In Northern Virginia, AWS worked with Loudoun Water to become the first data center operator in the state approved to use recycled water in direct evaporative cooling systems. AWS already uses recycled water for cooling in 20 data centers around the world and has plans to expand recycled water use in more facilities as it works toward becoming water+.  
Community water reuse.
After maximizing the use of water in its data centers, the spent liquid is still safe for many other uses, and AWS is finding more ways to return it to communities. In Oregon, AWS provides up to 96% of the cooling water from its data centers to local farmers at no charge for use in irrigating crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat.  
Water replenishment.
To meet its water+ commitment, AWS is investing in water replenishment projects in the communities where it operates. Replenishment projects expand water access, availability, and quality by restoring watersheds and bringing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services to water-stressed communities. To date, AWS has completed replenishment projects in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and South Africa, providing 1.6 billion liters of freshwater each year to people in those communities. For example, in regions like Maharashtra and Hyderabad, India, and West Java, Indonesia, AWS is partnering with global clean water nonprofit Water.org to provide 250,000 people with access to safe water and sanitation. Building on its existing portfolio of water replenishment programs, AWS today announced several new projects, which, once completed, will provide more than 823 million liters of water to communities each year, including: - India: AWS is providing continued support to WaterAid to complete projects in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh after they were launched in March 2022. Since then, WaterAid has already completed five piped water systems and new groundwater recharge projects, which will supply 500 households–approximately 2,100 people–with an estimated 47 million liters of water per year. WaterAid also conducted education campaigns on water conservation in these communities to educate residents on practical ways they can conserve clean water, use rainwater harvesting, and conduct water audits.   - UK: AWS is working with The Rivers Trust and Action for the River Kennet to create two wetlands on a tributary of the River Thames, one of the most important water catchment areas in the UK. The wetlands will recharge over 587 million liters of groundwater per year and improve water quality by receiving and treating polluted runoff from farms and roadways, addressing growing water scarcity and boosting water quality in the Thames River basin.   - US (California): Beginning this winter,AWS, the conservation non-profit Freshwater Trust, and the Omochumne-Hartnell Water District will recharge 189 million liters of groundwater per year using winter water from the Cosumnes River. This will allow water to gradually flow through the groundwater table and back into the Sacramento and San Joaquin watershed, increasing water flows during drier summer months. This lowers the temperature of the river, improves salmon habitat, and increases summer flows into the San Francisco Bay Delta, a critical water supply source for the communities in the region.   Today’s announcement adds to Amazon’s commitment of $10 million to Water.org to support the launch of the Water & Climate Fund, which will deliver climate-resilient water and sanitation solutions to 100 million people across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This donation will directly empower 1 million people with water access by 2025, providing 3 billion liters of water each year to people in water scarce areas. On January 17th 1883 the author Compton Mackenzie was born.
Some of you might be surprised that Compton was actually born in Hartlepool, England as Edward Montague Compton. He came from a family of thespians and  his grandfather, Henry, had dropped their traditional surname, Mackenzie and taken the name Compton as a stage name. Henry was a well known Victorian actor, his father, Edward Compton and mother Virginia Bateman, were actors and theatre company managers; his sister, Fay Compton, starred in many of J. M. Barrie's plays, including Peter Pan. 
He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he graduated with a degree in modern history. I would have to go back further than his grandfather to see when his family left Scotland, but they did have strong Scottish connections. 
He studied law, but gave up his studies to work on his first play, The Gentleman in Grey. This was followed by three successful novels, the latter getting critics interested in him, one saying the most promising novelist of his generation. On the outbreak of the First World War Mackenzie attempted unsuccessfully to obtain a commission in the Seaforth Highlanders. However, his friend, General Ian Hamilton, arranged for Mackenzie to became a lieutenant in the Royal Marines and he served with the Royal Naval division in the Dardanelles campaign in 1915. After being recruited by MI6 he became director of the Aegean Intelligence Service in Syria.
During this period Mackenzie was mixed up in a good deal of cloak-and-dagger activities which aroused strong criticism of the British Secret Service among both enemies and neutral parties, he was also heavily involved with events in Balkan states as head of Anglo-French police in Athens.
After the war Mackenzie returned to writing and spent a lot of time living on the island of Capri. He joined a group of expatriate artists and intellectuals that included D. H. Lawrence and Somerset Maugham. After this he returned to his family's ancestral homeland where he went to great lengths to trace the steps of his ancestors back to his spiritual home in the Highlands, and displayed a deep and tenacious attachment to Gaelic culture throughout his long and very colourful life, developing a close relationship with Hugh MacDiarmid. 
His biographer, Andro Linklater, commented,
 "Mackenzie wasn't born a Scot, and he didn't sound like a Scot. But nevertheless his imagination was truly Scottish." 
In 1932 Compton wrote a book Greek memoirs about his time in the secret service describing it as  an organization with  "scores of under-employed generals surrounded by a dense cloud of intelligence officers sleuthing each other. The book was immediately withdrawn and all remaining copies were destroyed. Mackenzie was fined £100 for breaching the Official Secrets Act. It was the first time an acknowledgement of a secret service in the country. From then on he was monitored by the same people he used to work for. By this time MacKenzie was now fully settled in Scotland, living on Barra, where between 1937-45 he wrote a major works across six volumes,  The Four Winds of Love, it has been described as " one of the most ambitious Scottish novels of the twentieth century" and contained almost 1 million words.
In 1947 Compton became one of Scotland's favourite authors with the publication of Whisky Galore, the fictionalized a real incident, the sinking of the SS Politician off Eriskay with "thousands of cases of whisky, and the islanders' desperate attempts to salvage their providential gift of liquid gold from the sea." The following year came the film, which starred  Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. It also seen a resurgence in his previous work, which included the popular Monarch of the Glen. 
Another  biographer, Gavin Wallace, has pointed out: 
"Although Mackenzie's output of novels (including delightful books for children), essays, criticism, history, biography, autobiography, and travel writing was prolific - a total of 113 published titles - it can truly be said that if he had never written a word he would still have been a celebrity. He had a personality as exhibitory and colourful as his writing, and remained throughout his life a gregarious man with a brilliant sense of comedy. Flamboyant, a raconteur and mimic, he was no less memorable as the formidable scourge of politicians, bureaucrats, and governments, and the passionate defender of the ostracized, the shunned, and the wronged."
Compton Mackenzie died on 30 November 1972, aged 89, in Edinburgh and was interred at Eoligarry on the Isle of Barra in an ancient graveyard not far from the house he had built.
