WEIRD ANIME NIGHT - PROMARE (and also Wolf Children)
Ugh, this one is going to be hard to explain. Watched this movie and another called wolf children (GREAT MOVIE) over the weekend with the waifu. Now Wolf children was good, it was a slice of life ish movie about growing up and watching a single mom struggle, which as I was raised by a single mother, it really hit home…..but man, PROMARE
WOW
The only way I can convey to you WHAT I watched was to say it like this
Have you ever tried to read the plots to like, a Gorillaz album? okay, so its kind of like that, like they made a series of music videos and stitched them together, but they aren’t music videos, its just a normal movie, with a plot that IS explained….. but like, as it happens, like its calvin ball rules kinda. Like theyre fire fighters, but they are fighting fire people, and those fire people get power from like, a parrellel universe that wants to burn things…I feel like I’m spoiling it but lets just copy and paste the wiki, maybe they explain it better.
SPOILERS AHEAD
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WATCH THE MOVIE AND NOT BE SPOILED I LOVED IT AND YOU SHOULD DEF WATCH IT BUT IT IS BONKERS WACKO MAN
The planet Earth suffered a calamity known as the Great World Blaze, where the fires from mass spontaneous human combustions killed half the world's population. Certain ones developed pyrokinetic abilities during and subsequent to the event, and became known as the Burnish.
Thirty years later, Galo Thymos lives and works as a member of the firefighting group Burning Rescue, in the city of Promepolis. He responds to incidents involving the purported Mad Burnish, a group of liberating terrorists. Galo defeats Lio Fotia, who is brought into custody by Freeze Force, a police force owned by Kray Foresight. However, Lio frees all refugees and himself, in order to escape from prison. They arrive at the cave near a frozen lake, where Lio fails to revive a Burnish scientist with mouth-to-mouth flame transfer technique. Lio tells Galo that Kray is capturing Burnish for use in human experiments.
Kray reveals the plan that Earth will soon be destroyed by an uncontrollable surge of magma from the planet's core, with which Galo disagrees. Kray discovers that the ability of Burnish can be used to create a warp drive, which he intends to use to flee Earth with a select portion of humanity. Meanwhile, Freeze Force recaptures all Burnish remnants and they are sent to the city. When Lio arrives there to confront Kray, Galo intervenes with Lio and the two escape to a frozen lake. The flames melt the lake's ice and reveal a laboratory run by a holographic projection of Deus Prometh. He explains that the Burnish can communicate with the Promare, a race of inter-dimensional flame beings residing in the planet's core. The surging magma has a side effect of subjecting them[clarification needed] and Kray's experiments on the Burnish are accelerating the growth.
When Galo and Lio pilot the mecha of Deus' design, Deus X Machina, they return to the city and Kray reveals that he is a Burnish. Kray kidnaps and tries to use Lio to power the warp drive, but Galo revives Lio using the mouth-to-mouth technique. Galo, Lio and all refugees sacrifice their power by combining the drive with the mecha, in order to control the magma and protect everyone by themselves.
With the planet restored, Kray loses his power, and Galo and Lio resolve to bring peace.
I mean
This movie is a visual treat my dudes
It looks amazing, its all 3D animated but it looks like it was drawn for the most part, you rarely get that SD Gundam force fake anime look to it, save a few bullet time camera movements
Honestly 10/10 have already watched it twice
Its fucking good
also
its not a weird movie, but you should also watch wolf children
its a real tear up feel good movie and I think we all need one of those right now
go watch it too

oh actually I’ve decided I’m gonna stoke the fire on this one.
Avatar: as much of a cinematic once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece as it was back in the mid 2000′s. 10/10
Gurren Laggan: I honestly disliked the first half of the show. Too much zany mechas and tiddy-swanging. I’d have dropped it if I was watching it on my own. But then the second half became genuinely interesting and the finale was mind-blowing. Ended at an 8/10
Brand New Animal: BNA really didn’t.... know what it was trying to be. It was like the writers had a bunch of unrelated Zany Moments they were trying to stitch together, and sacrificed the world-building or the character-development for it. Pretty to look at. 6/10
Angel Beats: Some fun slapstick, some memorable moments. Got some laughs out of me. Gotta say though it’s not my brand of angst - I don’t vibe so much with the “here’s my 3 minute tragic backstory okay bye” kind of angst. 6.5/10
Japan Sinks: Ha. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. 3/10
Hinamatsuri: Hilarious! I’m not usually into comedy but this had me reeling. 8/10
Dororo (2019): Dororo REALLY vibed with me. The way that leaves this aching feeling in my chest when I think about it. Loved it thoroughly as a deep-cutting story with a massively intriguing premise, potently memorable characters, and a plot that held my full attention start to finish. 9.5/10
Promare: It’s Gurren Laggan, but with characters I care about! I’d die for Lio. 9/10
The Great Pretender: AMAZING. Thoroughly amazing at the type of show it wants to be. It set a goal and nailed it, with such confidence and intricacy that it’s nothing short of impressive. Personally, I’m not super into that type of show, but it pulled it off with such mind-blowing execution and such breath-taking art that I really can’t do anything but sing its praises. 8.5/10 from me, could reasonably be called a 10/10 by others
Dorohedoro: This show is terrible to look at and it LOVES BEING THAT WAY. I love that it’s that way. It’s absurd humor embedded deep in a grotesque apocalyptic world. The kind of humor that would slap me and leave me winded. The aesthetic fills me with such disgusted fondness. 9/10
Made In Abyss: Whimsical and Horrifying, a real package deal. However I personally didn’t really connect with the characters as much as I’d like to. 8/10
Aggretsuko: This is a show I like more watching alone, the first time, than on repeat with people. It’s good! It’s funny! But the nihilism can get a bit grating (and the stupid love-plot with Haida let it go. Haida). 6.5/10
Millionaire Detective: Funny, has its moments, not particularly deep though. You’re here for the slapstick buddy system. 7/10
Golden Kamuy: (I cannot give a rating because I was dealing with IRL stuff during like half the viewing and this is a show you cannot afford to miss a second of.)
Tiger and Bunny: Decent comedic routine between Barnaby and Kotetsu, and their dynamic gets better in the second half of the series. But it’s really nothing memorable or complex in either its plot, characters, or animation. Saturday morning cartoon vibes. 7/10
Gravity Falls: (meme of man sitting at computer, remembering 2013 Gravity Falls and crying). Upon rewatch, I’m realizing 75% of my humor was likely shaped by this show. 9.5/10
Just out of curiosity, have you seen Tiger and Bunny?
Yep! Just recently. (Well, mostly yep)
During quarantine my IRL anime friends have been doing anime watch nights over Discord twice a week. As a result I’ve seen way more anime in 2020 than I have like any year prior. We just finished Tiger and Bunny about two weeks ago. I wasn’t 100% paying attention during it since I was moving at the same time so I was distracted figuring out Life Stuff but I was mostly paying attention.
We’ve also watched (gosh let’s see...) Avatar*, Gurren Laggan, Brand New Animal, Angel Beats*, Japan Sinks, Hinamatsuri, Dororo, Promare*, The Great Pretender, Dorohedoro, Made In Abyss, Aggretsuko*, Millionaire Detective Balance Unlimited, Golden Kamuy (s1-2), Tiger and Bunny, and now Gravity Falls*
(* = I’d seen it already)
...It’s been a long quarantine wow...
