Since I am not so busy today I was looking into updating my Android Tablet that I've had a custom ROM on for some time. It was a complicated setup because the Tablet isn't officially supported by LineageOS, but it seems the support via the so called "GSI" image has become better, so I am going through the things I had installed, looking at what I wanna keep, what can go, so that I can then do a clean install because I don't think just updating this through normal processes will go well on this thing.

What fascinates me while doing this is that some really large and popular projects, are just kinda dead. The themeing engine Substratum has Archived its GitHub Repository, and usually when big projects archive their GitHub, there will be a link to some new alternative that's on the rise that's usually even better. But after searching GitHub and Reddit, it seems Substratum left with no successor in sight, which is quite sad because it actually looks really really cool what you can do with it.

I generally leave my main phone untouched by Custom ROMs because from my experience with Arch Linux, I will break it, so I prefer keeping this kinda stuff to secondary devices where I can afford the Operating system failing. But even then, this would've looked really good on my tablet too, so I'm a bit sad.

Perhaps there will eventually be a new themeing engine on the rise, but considering how long I left the OS on this tablet untouched, I will probably not notice when that new themeing engine appears.

Worth mentioning I did still use that tablet, extensively, one of my best purchases because I can just stream whatever show I want on it while programming or gaming. If y'all think you need a third monitor for your streaming, maybe take a cheap Android tablet into consideration

Not to be that annoying guy, but EVERYONE live with a third option. Android is open-source, which means anybody can create an alternative OS. On most Android phone, you can unlock option to replace the stock Android by a custom ROM.

You should check out LineageOS, /e/, Ubuntu Touch and GrapheneOS. Most android devices are supported and even with 0 tech literacy you should be able to do it by yourself in one day. These OS are generally privacy-focused, gives you much more control other your phone (eg. removing stock apps!) and offer long-term support security updates for your phone ! No more phone stuck on Android 10 three years after the release because the manufacturer is lazy !!

I personally use LineageOS for MicroG, a rom that is completely Google-free !! It's working better than stock Android, without all the spying ! The only thing I can't do is micro transactions that use Google Pay/Play, but I don't care anyway.

PSA: I will personally help anyone who wants help transitioning to LineageOS !

I understand that this isn't a black-and-white issue in most countries, but I live in the US and am surrounded Annoying People so here's a poll.

Nicht auf jedem Android Gerät funktioniert nach dem "rooten", der Befreiung des Geräts von Sperren auf den Adminzugriff, alles wie vorher. Deutschlandfunk Nova hat den Berliner Verein Topio in der alten Markthalle in Moabit besucht und sich die einzelnen Schritte und über auftretende Probleme berichten lassen.

Ein trackingsfreies Betriebssystem installieren

Anders als die vorinstallierten Betriebssysteme soll das Handy keine Infos an zum Beispiel Google senden. Dazu muss das Gerät zuerst einmal "geflasht" werden. Man entsperrt zuerst den sogenannten Bootloader und nimmt damit Google die Kontrolle über das Gerät. Bevor man sich daran wagt, solllte man schauen ob das für diesen Gerätetyp überhaupt erfolgreich funktionieren kann.

Danach installiert man z.B. als neues Betriebssystem "Lineage OS" und als App Store den freien F-Droid Store. Dort findet man offene Software für fast alle Anwendungen - aber sicher nicht Google Maps oder WhatsApp oder ... dafür aber sicher verschlüsselnde Messenger wie Briar, Wire, Sessions und die Karten von Open Street Map(OSM) und dazu das Navigationsprogramm OSMand, u.v.m.

Nach etwas Eingewöhnungszeit ist das Handy wieder vertraut. Höchstens auf Stauauskünfte in Echtzeit muss man auf einem trackingfreien Handy verzichten, denn sowas liefern die trackingfreien Apps nicht, denn sie verraten nicht wo ich mich gerade befinde. Spätestens mit der geringeren Anzahl von Spam-Nachrichten auf einem trackingfreien Handy und einem guten Gefühl wird man dann für den Aufwand belohnt.

Aki igazán bátor, az az utcán se lát reklámokat, mert nem csak pihole van otthon, de a telefonjára rak LineageOS-t, megrootolja Magisk-al, rak rá AdAway-t, vesz saját router-t, rak rá openwrt-t, felrakja a WireGuard modult, rak a telefonjára is WireGuard-ot, csinál dynDNS-t, rak a telefonjára Tasker-t és leprogramozza, hogy ha a telefon nincs az otthoni wifin, akkor azonnal csatlakozik a WireGuard-ra és minden forgalmat oda irányít, tehát az AdAway mellett a pihole is védi.

Mármint elvileg, én természetesen senki ilyet nem ismerek.

i just started using a fingerprint lockscreen unlock for my phone for the very first time because the operating system is a modded version of lineageOS so i trust the privacy but ever since then wellsfargo and google will not leave me alone about signing in via biometrics and have taken away the option to see my password as i input it so typos are more frequent and frustrating. it's like big brother all up in here and not even in a sexy way

I installed Lineage 17 made from salih_4187 on XDA because Android Nougat is really old and apps don't support Nougat anymore (YouTube, Tumblr etc.). And this is as funcionable as Resurrection Remix (except for the NFC) and the battery life got a little worse (prolly because of the newer version). You saved my day, salih_4187. The best and worst thing about being into esoteric phones is everyone wants to talk to you about whatever phone youre using. Like god, yes hot trans woman at the bus stop, please talk to me about my 2" smartphone running lineageOS... Brett in marketing though, please don't.

the ideal form of internet content is 2-6 hours of someone with a little bit of undiagnosed autism dissasembling phones, tablets, laptops, computers, ect and cleaning them, repairing them, doing something silly on them like installing arch linux from scratch on a tiny dell computer from like 2013 or installing lineageOS on a samsung galaxy s7 with no back glass and a hole drilled out of it where the front camera is or installing a modchip on a gamecube or fixing a USB port in a car stereo. if a transgender woman made youtube videos like this i think i would ask forher hand in marriage.

saw couple of people saying they have an iPhone and can't afford a better phone, I'm sure you can, iphone holds its value on resseling really well for sone reason (at least it did last time i checked) and you can buy like two second hand pixels for the price of one, or some Chinese phone like Xiaomi or something cheaper with unlocked bootloader, e. x. Techno spark 10 yeah big and clunky but powerful enough and costs 100 $ new!! and if you're afraid of spyware it has open bootloader so you can just put grapheneos or lineage os (android but made from open source code only) an without even google services if you want, thats not that hard but you can ask guys at phone repairs to do that for you maybe, or ask your friends around

my current phone OnePlus Nord CE 2 (i dont reccomend it due to onplus locking all bootloders afterwards) has sd card slot, headphone jack, and semi open bootloader and cost me 100$ second hand in pristine condition

OnePlus 6 > LineageOS 22.1 (A15)

OnePlus One > Lineage got discontinues again, build is from March :v Nexus 4 > CarbonROM 8 (A10), update last month x3

The N4 I've def maybe probably had some kinda feelings towards in an objectum way and kinda wish we could go back to using it x3

Tried flashing a hybrid modem to get LTE on it but can't tell if something is wrong phone side or something to do with the SIM, which incidentally didn't work in the OPO correctly (something to do with age and 5G maybe?? or more likely the OPO's slot is damaged, we WERE forced to pry the tray out..). OP6 took the SIM fine. Should try my ass tablet and daily driver next, and if we still have them a few dummy SIM's on the non-responsive devices
