Y/N hosted a small memorial service at her home. Those who knew the truth about Steve were invited. Bucky didn’t show. He also wasn’t answering any of Y/N’s calls or texts, still. It was making her grow angry at him each time Bucky chose to ignore her. But she couldn’t focus too much on Bucky, she had Morgan, Peter, and Harley to worry about.

Spring was finally making its appearance, which meant that Peter and Harley were beginning to spend weekends at the cabin doing yard work. Y/N had told them that there was no need, she, Morgan, and Natasha would do it. But the boys were insistent. It was nice though when they were around. Morgan adored them and they adored her. She had older brothers who would clearly do anything to help her.

Harley, Morgan, and Peter were playing tag while Y/N sat on the porch watching when Rhodey arrived. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the presidential brigade with him. Getting out of his limo, Rhodey shot her a smile before his eyes snapped toward the sound of a voice.

“Uncle Rhodey!” Morgan squealed, stopping the game of tag to rush toward him.

“Mo,” he smiled, crouching down to meet Morgan. The two hugged. He looked up to see the two boys. “Peter, Harley.”

“Mr. President, sir,” Peter responded.

Rhodey shook his head. “Peter, it’s okay, call me Rhodey.” He smiled and gave a nod toward Harley before looking at Y/N.

“Come play with us, Uncle!” Mo tried to get Rhodey to come with her.

“I will after I talk to your mom. Go play with the boys and I’ll be out to join soon.” Rhodey headed for the house.

“To what do we owe this pleasure, Mr. President?” Y/N teased.

Rhodey shook his head with a chuckle. “I will never get used to that.” He was close enough now to hug Y/N, which she gladly accepted. “How are you?”

Y/N pulled away with a tight, sympathetic smile. “I’m okay.”

Rhodey scoffed, shaking his head. “You sound too much like Tony.”

“Why don’t we go inside?”

Rhodey followed Y/N inside, where they found themselves sitting at the dining room table. He pulled an envelope from out of the inside pocket of the suit jacket he was wearing. Placing it on the table, Rhodey pushed it toward Y/N.

“What’s this?” She asked, picking it up to examine it.

“It’s your invitation to the new Avengers exhibit opening at the Smithsonian next week,” he responded.

“This couldn’t have just been mailed?”

“I wanted to give you the invitation myself.”

“Who’s all invited?”

“All of the Team.”

Y/N scoffed. “What does that even mean anymore?”

“Well, we focused on the original members. Clint, Thor, Natasha, Bruce, and yourself. Thor isn’t reachable, Clint is busy with his family, Natasha and Bruce are still up in the air.”

“So that leaves me.”

“Before you make your decision, I want you to know that they are making an area dedicated to each of the original members, but they are going to be doing more of a memorial for Tony and Steve in their areas.” Y/N nodded along, not surprised at the way the Smithsonian was going with things. “Sam is coming in to talk about Steve since I and the Smithsonian thought that it would be tough for you to talk about both of them. But we would like it if you came and talked about Tony for a brief moment. Maybe donate something of his to the museum?”

“Of course,” she replied, without a second thought.

“You can take a few days to think about it.”

“No, I’ll do it.”

“Are you sure?”

Y/N gave a nod. “I’m sure.”

“Alright.” He looked to the side, watching Morgan, Harley, and Peter run around the yard. “The kids are welcome to come too.”

Y/N looked over at the kids—her kids. “I think that I’d rather wait to take them once it’s all open… I would like to see all that it holds before I let them see it. There are still things the three of them don’t know and I don’t want them to find out through a museum.”

“Understandable… You’re a good mom to them.”

“I’m not those boys’ mother.”

“I know. But you could be and, in many ways, have stepped up to replace them.”

“I don’t want to replace anyone… their mothers… or Tony… I just want them to have a welcome place and more family.”

Rhodey nodded. “Have you talked to Barnes? I’ve tried to get a hold of him to invite him to talk about Steve but he’s not answering.”

“He’s not answering me either.” Y/N sighed. “I don’t even know where he is.”

“I do. But that’s only because of his pardon. I’m sure that it wouldn’t take you very long to find him either.”

“It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t want to talk to me. If he did, he wouldn’t have disappeared.”

“Bucky hasn’t disappeared, Y/N, and I’m sure if you just went to him—“

“Are you really encouraging me to have a relationship with Bucky? I thought that you were team Tony.”

Rhodey sighed, “Tony is dead and you are my friend Y/N. You deserve to live your life with someone you love.”

“Are you saying that I didn’t love Tony?”

“That’s not what I’m saying. You—“

“Cause I loved him,” tears collected in your eyes, threatening to fall. “I loved him so much.”

“Y/N—“

“I loved him so much and I couldn’t even save him! He loved me even more than I can possibly understand. He accepted the fact that I still loved Bucky. He—“

“Y/N.”

Rhodey’s voice was firm as he called her name again. He glanced around her. Y/N quickly looked around to see that tendrils of her powers were floating out of her. She quickly wiped her tears and focused on her breath.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered.

“To what extent do you have your powers, Y/N?” Rhodey asked. Y/N looked out the window, focusing on the lake. “Y/N, do you have control of the same powers as the Stones?”

“Yes.”

Rhodey inhaled sharply. “That’s dangerous.”

Y/N snapped her head in his direction. “Do you not trust me?”

“It is not you that I don’t trust.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing.”

“Really? Rhodey, you’re the President. I know that me still having access to my full powers—the full powers of the Infinity Stones—is a major concern.”

“As long as you don’t go crazy with your powers, it will all be fine.”

Y/N nodded, realizing that Rhodey was doing her a huge favor. “Thank you, Rhodey.”

“Of course.”

The speech at the Smithsonian was Y/N’s first official public appearance since before the Accords tore the Team apart. That was almost 8 years ago. Y/N was slightly nervous but was ready to get the first appearance over with. Happy did her a favor by flying with her to Washington DC and then driving her to the new Smithsonian building. As per Y/N’s request, Happy waited in the car.

Y/N stood in front of the building as Happy drove away. There was the Avenger’s symbolic ‘A’ etched into the side with smaller, circular symbols representing the Team members surrounding it. She took a deep breath and looked down at the box of tools and papers in her hands before heading inside.

Quickly, Y/N was greeted and escorted to where she would need to be for the small program. The beginning of the program didn’t register in her mind as she couldn’t stop staring at the banners of the original Avengers that hung down behind the stage. Her name being called broke her out of her trance, followed by applause. Y/N plastered a smile on her face as she walked up the few steps and onto the stage. She situated herself behind the podium, placing the box she was carrying on top of it.

“Thank you for that warm welcome,” Y/N began. “Though, it is really simple in comparison to what my late husband—to what Tony would have wanted and expected.” The crowd laughed. “I am grateful for this opportunity to be here at the dedication and opening of the Avengers Smithsonian Museum. I am truly honored to be a part of the Avengers and to be here with all of you today.”

“Tony would have loved the attention, though, by the looks of this building, it is not up to his standards.” The crowded laughed again. “Tony would have insisted on designing and building this building himself. People would believe that it would be for selfish reasons, that he couldn’t be honored in a building that he didn’t approve of. But that’s not it. Tony wouldn’t allow the rest of us to be honored in a building that he didn’t approve of.”

“People believe that Tony was a selfish man. That is what he wanted the world to believe. It was a way to protect himself, and those he loved, from getting hurt. What people didn’t realize is that Tony did everything for everyone else. He stopped Stark Industries from being a weapon manufacturer to the largest tech company, helping more people worldwide than any other. He built his suits to protect the world—to protect his world. He sacrificed himself so that those across the world—across the universe—could have their families and friends back. He did that.”

“For his memorial, I’ve brought a box of the tools he used to build the first few versions of his suits. I’ve also brought sketches and plans that Tony drew up for the suits. Thank you again for allowing me to speak about Tony and I only hope his legacy continues in this museum and in each of us. Thank you.”

The crowd clapped. Y/N smiled and gave a little nod before placing the box on a nearby pedestal. She made it off the stage and found a set beside Rhodey. Sam was introduced next. He went onto the stage, shield in hand. This made Y/N wonder what his plans were for the shield.

Sam began his speech, though Y/N didn’t hear the beginning parts due to staring at the shield. When she finally looked at Sam, he paused his speech. He gave her a small smile before continuing.

“Steve represented—still represents the best in all of us,” Sam stated. “Courageous, righteous, hopeful.” He turned to face Steve’s banner. “And he mastered posing stoically.” The crowd chuckled and Y/N’s lips couldn’t help to quirk up briefly. “The world has been forever changed.” Sam turned back to the podium and paused, thinking for a short moment. “A few months ago, billions of people reappeared after five years away, sending the world into turmoil. We need new heroes. Ones suited for the times we’re in. Symbols… are nothing without the women and men that give them meaning. As you can see to each side of me.” He motioned to the banners hanging behind him. “And this thing…” He picked up the shield. “I don’t know if there’s ever been a greater symbol. But it’s more about the man who propped it up, and he’s gone. So, today we honor Steve’s legacy. But also, we look dot the future. So, thank you, Captain America. But this belongs to you.”

Y/N watched as the people around her stood up and applauded Sam. A General walked up onto the stage and took the shield from him. Y/N furrowed her brows. The General took the shield and placed it in a glass case on a pedestal. She snapped her head at Rhodey.

“Did you know he was going to do this?” Y/N questioned.

“Y/N, you can’t—“

“Rhodey. Did you know?”

“Yes. He called and told me a few weeks ago.”

Y/N scoffed, shaking her head. “I can’t believe that you two would keep something like this from me.”

“It’s his choice, Y/N.”

“Yes, but it’s not the right one and you know it.”

Y/N noticed Sam making his way over to her and Rhodey. She turned away and marched off before he could reach her. She found Happy leaning on the car outside.

“Can you find your way home?” Y/N asked.

Happy straightened up. “What happened?” He questioned. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m not— I can’t—“ She shook her head. “I’ll be home soon. There’s someone I need to see.”

Before Happy could say anything else, Y/N had disappeared through a portal. There was only one thing on her mind: she needed to talk to Bucky.
