LOAVES STORY
Now playing:
The Baker--The Substitute. The Limey. The Accountant. The Commuter. Here's another entry in that category of action film in which a mature guy with an ineffectual-sounding moniker turns out to be a secret badass. They're profitable fantasy fulfillment for us frustrated old guys.
The badass in question this time is Ron Perlman, a PTSD sufferer who runs a bakery in a gorgeous coastal area (the movie was shot in the Cayman Islands). When his son (Joel David Moore) runs afoul of gangsters, led by conscience-tortured Elias Koteas, led in turn by not-so-tortured Harvey Keitel, The Baker ends up with custody of his beautiful, unicorn-loving 8-year-old granddaughter (Emma Ho), who is also traumatized and doesn't speak. He also finds himself, reluctantly, in possession of a valuable drug stash which the thugs want back.
With its laboriously contrived set-up, it takes a long time for this movie, directed by Jonathan Sobol from a script by Paolo Mancini and Thomas Michael, to get going, and the violent story is told so elliptically that exactly what's going on is a bit unclear at times. But at the center of it is Perlman, who started his movie career in 1981 as a caveman in Quest for Fire and whose lantern-jawed, soulful face has been enlivening movies and TV shows ever since in roles large and small. He played Hellboy, of course, but even so leading man roles in movies have been rare in Perlman's career, and it's cool to see how effectively he brings this one more gravitas, and more warmth, than it really deserves.
His gruff rapport with his granddaughter is endearing, even though the kid is glamorized almost to the point of Natalie Portman in The Professional. Indeed, the whole film has a vaguely Gallic feel, like an abandoned Luc Besson project. At one point The Baker even reminisces about taking his son mushroom hunting! Perlman underplays this short monologue simply and touchingly.
Also to the movie's credit: It prominently features Iggy Pop's "The Passenger." And, in case you were wondering: yes, at one point a rolling pin does come into play.

Limey Unicorn, a Beer Brewed with Rock Climbing Chalk

There’s a certain chalky, mineral quality that hangs on the last sips of Wynkoop Brewing‘s new British Golden Ale, but I never would have guessed that it was actually brewed with chalk. Or that so many beers, in essence, are too.
Limey Unicorn, a new beer from Denver’s original brewpub was made in collaboration with FrictionLabs and White Labs, and it was indeed brewed with rock climbing chalk.
“It all started with a joke between myself and Wynkoop brewer Jason Lima that we could use the chalk we use at the brewery to climb with if we ever ran out of normal climbing chalk,” says Wynkoop brewer Charles McManus, who keeps in shape for his brewing job with rock climbing. His team recently took first place in the Colorado Brewers Climbing League.

“Brewing chalk is Calcium carbonate, and we use it and a variety of other salts and minerals to adjust the water chemistry for different styles of beer.”

This joke became a reality through his brewing and climbing networks, which tend to be tightly interwoven. He told his friend, avid climber, and White Labs representative JoAnne Carrilli-Stevenson about the idea. She told Kevin Brown, founder of the FrictionLabs climbing chalk company. Soon enough McManus was writing a recipe for an English-style ale brewed with FictionLabs Unicorn Dust and British Ale yeast donated by White Labs. They named it Limey Unicorn — “limey” is slang for British person, and unicorn as a nod to the chalk’s name.
Wynkoop cuts its teeth producing English-style beers and has a long history of cask offerings, so it was only natural that this chalk beer fall into that stylistic category.
“We use chalk specifically on a lot of our British ales because these styles hail from regions with a naturally higher amount of Calcium and carbonate,” McManus explains.
“The FrictionLabs chalk is not only food grade but pharmaceutical grade as well, which makes it a superior product” McManus says. “It’s not Calcium carbonate but instead Magnesium carbonate, which is another mineral we use, so we decided to go for it. As with most of our brewing salts, we added it to the kettle at the beginning of the boil.”

On brew day, the FrictionLabs crew joined Wynkoop’s brewing team for the process — and a mash rest climbing session. “During the hour rest we took the whole team down into our basement and had a climbing session on the natural features found on the 200-year-old stone walls,” says McManus of Wynkoop’s historic building. “It was super rad and couldn’t have been more appropriate.”
Limey Unicon is brightly hued and smells earthy like fresh rain. It’s medium-bodied with pillowy mouthfeel. “The chalk lends a distinctly crisp finish to the beer,” says McManus.
The chalk might also be a conversation-starter about a critical but often forgotten component to brewing beer: water chemistry.
“The chalk in the finish of Limey Unicorn is characteristic of the water profile of the mineral-rich region where we drew inspiration for it, and our brewery. We think that this beer will bring attention to water chemistry — and the fact that it can make or break the overall effect of a delicious brew.”
Limey Unicorn will tap at Wynkoop Brewing in February and will be served in March at Collaboration Fest in Denver.

#authorlifemonth 20: dream achieved
To be honest, I’m excited about Equus! (there isn’t an official buy link yet, but envision a collection of fantasy about horses, Pegasus, unicorns, centaurs, etc) Having a piece of short fiction included in a Real Anthology™ with other people’s stories, edited by a real live editor, with payment--is a first. I’ve had stories in magazines, in other anthologies, but things always feel a little more real when they pay you, right?
Furthermore, the story included is on my own terms. It’s something I’m proud of, that I feel is original, a story that is very me. I had an idea and wrote it and someone liked it enough to publish it with few tweaks: that’s how writing is supposed to go. That’s how writing does not usually go.
Here’s a little snip of ‘Eel and Bloom,’ a story about water horses and Amorphophallus titanum in rural Florida:
Ma reached out and ran her hands up the thick stem of the corpse flower. I hated to watch her fingers, pale on the purple, mottled flesh of the bloom. It seemed obscene, the corpulent stalk and its aroma, its heavy, open blossom. Carnal, suggestive where her ruined left palm was death. Even in her girlhood she’d never been a dab hand with limeys as I was. She lifted something from her lap, a handkerchief, and combed bits of dark pollen onto the white cloth. The lace edging the kerchief told me it was one of her nice ones, one of the Irish-woven hankies intended for my hope chest, before everyone had agreed there would be no need of one.
