What Are the Best Paving Slabs for Patios in Dublin?
Building a new patio or restoring an old one can be an exciting project. But it can also be challenging and time-consuming, especially if you have no experience in this type of task. So, to save time and have a well-made patio – the kind that looks and lasts long, consider hiring a reputable paving contractor.
Before your chosen paver starts working though, you’ll have to take care of some things like the design of the patio and the paving slabs you want to use. The latter can be overwhelming given the many choices available. To make things easier, we’ve put together a guide on the best paving slabs for patios in Dublin.
Concrete Paving Slabs for Patios
Tumblr media
When it comes to paving slabs, the concrete type is undeniably a favourite amongst property owners. Its popularity can be attributed to its cost and appearance.
This type of paving slab is the cheapest option in the market which makes it the perfect choice if you are on a budget.
It has a wide range of ‘looks’ which means that achieving any patio design you want is possible with this material.
For example, if you want a unique yet stylish patio, you can use a textured concrete slab. Meanwhile, a contemporary slab is the right option if you simply want to achieve a minimalist and clean look.
In addition, it comes in a variety of colours from the usual grey and charcoal to gold and yellow.
Natural Stone Paving Slabs for Patios
Another great material for patios and other outdoor spaces is a natural stone slab. As the name suggests, this material is made of naturally-occurring stones like granite, slate, limestone and sandstone.
While it is more expensive than a concrete slab, it is also more durable. In Rome, ancient walkways and structures made of natural stones still exist today. These are testaments to the longevity of this material.
Finding a natural stone paving that suits that patio look and colour you want should not be difficult as they are available in different varieties.
For example, a granite paving slab has a smooth surface with contemporary edges. Incredibly weather resistant, it has a stylish finish which makes it a great option if you want a modern and sophisticated patio.
Meanwhile, if you want that rustic look, choose a slate paving slab with a riven surface. Riven is the term used to describe the slab’s uneven, ridged surface – the typical appearance of newly quarried natural stone.
Cobbleblock Paving Slabs for Patios
Also referred to as a block or brick paver and cobbles, cobbleblock is similar to concrete slabs but are much smaller in size. It is also made of natural stone like sandstone and granite.
Using this material in small areas is highly recommended as it can make the space appear bigger. Known for its durability, cobbleblock is just what you need if you want a patio that exudes old-world charm.
As for its price, it varies depending on the size and type of stone used. Those made from granite tend to be more expensive than others.
In summary, with the variety of options available, you shouldn’t worry about finding a paving slab that would help you achieve the patio look you’ve always envisioned. Aside from the aesthetics, your decision would really largely depend on your budget.

The highest surface of your stones is also sawn, riven or naturally vaulted. a elegant sawn stone lends itself naturally to additional intricate patterns that believe as much on color as egg laying pattern. Coron to El Nido and Port Barton
Always taking the reccomendations of locals, I booked a ticket on the catamaran fast ferry, which given the windy weather was a good choice over the rust bucket slow boat. The 100 foot cat had very comfortable airplane type seats inside with air con. I booked the open air seat, and avoided the high volume video of “funny “ candid videos, Actually got a lounger on the aft deck, out of the wind and sun, and dozed in comfort for 2 hours. I’d expected an offshore run, but we were never out of sight of land, instead passing   down a long chain of islands, slipping through a pass between 2  tall green clad islands , one of which  had a large town, the other just some idylic looking thatched huts under the coco palms. Finally open water and the sea ran up an 8 foot roll, which the cat took on her stern quarter nicely. When the sun finally swung around and drove me from my spot, i moved to a shaded outside seat for the final 2 hours. Perhaps 10 miles of open water and then back into more islands at the top end of Palawan. There were dozens of islands, lots of white beaches, and almost no people. Palawan is the least developed island of the lot,  a nd it’s very big. Into El Nido by 4pm., where the usual tricycle hustlers tried to scam me. “only 150pesos, regular rate!” Tried for 50, got 80, regular fare is 40. But as usual it was just to far to haul my bags and I would never have got there, but would have been lost in the maze of tiny streets. El Nido is jammed below towering  karst cliffs, and has maxed out it’s footprint. My “hotel”, another bamboo shack was at the end of a trail throught the barrio, across the beach on a raised walkway, and higgldy pigglidy path over rough cobble between packed squatter shacks to “El Gordos”. Gordon, is a Canadian Married to a Philippino, and well established as a kayak guide and guest house host. 50 and friendly, he gave me all the nessecary info, stuffed me into a tiny 4 bed dorm, and booked my next day snorkle trip i ate in town at a pricey restaurant, and made the mistake of stopping at a busy street stall where locals were  buying the deep fried golden somethings as fast as they came out of the oil. I foolishly bought one, and it tasted very good, some sort of meat, which went through me like a hot bullet. Up all night emptying, and felt weak but purged by dawn. I cancelled the snorking, and laid around until i felt better.  Gordon had the cook make me alight meal, and I revived. Up early the next am and off on a bangka for the outside run. With strong winds predicted I,d hoped to tour before it got rough but missed the slot. Too choppy to snorkle, blowing 20, and we creaked down a seaward pass into an 8 foot sea. Bangkas are held together with 100 pound nylon fishing line, and bamboo flexes a lot, so there was a lot of ominous groaning. Nothing broke, but we shipped a lot of water before turning up a pass and getting the sea behind us. A seemingly unbroken wall of rock had a tidal hole, which when swum through led into a sheer sided  round pool open to the sky, with a tiny beach. Pretty cool to snorkle in through the surging water(timing) , part the fish and pop up into the air. The rock walls were 100 feet high, rough limestone and unclimable.
Next stop was at a shrine to St Somebody or other, a cement open sided dome with angel statues. Apparently the faithful could see visions in the rock cliffs. I saw lunch spread out and struggled through the gobbling crowd of Philipinos to get any. Different  manners here, very much me first. i did get a loaf in a rattan hammock, designed for small hunch backed people. One more snorkle stop for turtle viewing, then bash crash back down the pass to sea and home. There was a different shelterd route that would have taken 10 minues more, but the captain only knew one way. Back at the ranch I told El Gordo(who was a rail thin athlete) that  conditions wer e not favorable and he booked me a van to Port Barton the next am.
Last time I went to Port Barton In 2013, there were no vans, only big Jeepneys, a homemade cross between a  bus and a tank with tires. High centered, seemingly unsprung, seating for 20, and carrying 60( with the roof covered in cargoe and youth) these beasts go anywhere. Well except through axle deep mud. That trip we all had to get out, the driver attached a 100 foot rope to the frame, and all hearty bodys sucked the jeepney out of the morrass. Happened twice, and the strain may have contributed to the breakdown that occurred on the first hill out of the flats. All out, and start walking. Despite the intense heat and humidity it was actually quite interesting as the land slopped  up into virgin jungle, the hillside riven by steep falling streamlets. The Jeepney recovered and we made Port Barton by nightfall.
Now the road is cemented, and 12 seater vans rocket along several times a day. ( we touched 100kph a few times, and only slowed for sharp curves).  While El Nido has tripled in size, expanding along the road to town, Port Barton has doubled. The virgin forest is gone, the streamlets dry, and the low lands filled with housing. in town the barrio hs been pushed back by developers putting in low rise hotels, and cafes. The beach is still the best, a gentle curve of white sand backed by leaning coconuts, and while the empty lots have infilled, everything is low profiled. Warm water, good swimming (calm), and a fabulous view out across the bay miles to a chain of low barrier islands. The bay is filled with reefs, good snorkeling, good coral, and a fleet of  smaller bangkas leave every morning island hopping with a mix of international tourists. I took 2 back to back tours with the same operator “Dada”, and enjoyed the mix of snorkeling on good coral, turtle diving, beach BBQs, and some chill time on a deserted beach.Accomodation varied from, high end ($220 night) to my dorm at $10. Fan only, but upstairs with a verandah, clean toilets and showers(hot water!), and a decent restaurant up front where a trio of cats vied for leftovers. I broke up my snorkle trips with town days, walked the dawn beach, checked out the barrio, went back to my favourite restaurant   and found a French cafe with quality meals. Ate there one night with a couple from N carolina that I met on the boat, and we hit it off. I was glad to speak English for more than a few sentences, and they were glad to have someone else to talk to.
Port Barton still has a village feel, locals amble along, all knowing each other. The church broadcasts a choir Sundays, and the high scholl held a cross town (6 blocks) parade with the baton twirling , drum beating, shuffle marching lot grinning as they waved to friends and family. Most housing is shacks, some bamboo walled or cement blocked, and almost all one storied. Streets are unpaved, potholed, rutted with coral fill. Power is now 24 hour unless the generator quits, and there is one gas pump to service the hordes of motorcycles. There is a water refill station, mostly sending 20 litre jugs by Motorcycle cart to homes and businesses, but the y filled my motley collection of containers for 10 pesos. Friut is all imported, as indeed all food is, and so is pricey. Dogs bark all night and sleep all day, and cats seem oblivious to them, parading everywhere. It,s nice that many people have container gardens of flowers, some times covering whole yards. The Evergreen restaurant had bamboo that had fire engine red stems at mid point, and a stand of shade trees at the gate one of which i thought had leftover Christmas ribbons but were actually spills of crimson flowers. Orchids were everywhere, and the gardener had grown flats of that Hawaiian flower with the long pistil whose name escapes me, usually orange, but these ranged from pink to deep purple. Bouganvillea hung off fences, and Hibiscus grew like weeds. It odd, but of all the thousands of flowers I’ve seen, most have 5 petals. It’s pleasant that everywhere I’ve been there are flowers. One day, hot tired and just a bit grumpy, i trudged up a path, and realized I was walking on a sheet of fallen tiny pink flowers. Cheered me up no end! So Port Barton was great, I extended my stay to a week, and could have easily stayed longer. My rule is “when you find a good place, stay longer”, and Port Barton was a good place.
