Thinking about tattoos again
#Cipher talk#I don't really like to discuss it because it's not the usual question of 'jews and tattoos' for me#Because a lot of Jews in that conversation are getting tattoos for art primarily even if it's significant art#Whereas the big reason I maintain an interest is because tattooing is/used to be such a thing for Egyptians and specifically Copts#It's not just this is art: it's that it occupies a specific place as an artform#And henna is nice. I love henna. But henna and tattoos are two completely different things#And for some there'd be more complicated feelings: in the Maghreb kidnapped Jewish women were known to get tattooed#As a visual reminder of their severance#And that's not my history (Copts very obviously were not kidnapping Jewish women and that dynamic doesn't exist and never has for kidnapped#Coptic women afaik because they already get tattoos)#Like for reference. A lot of copts- it used to be most- get a cross tattooed on their wrist at a young age#This is less common today I think particularly in diaspora#But it is a Known Thing#IDK I want to talk about it with someone but a lot of people don't have this particular intersection when it comes to this conversation#And it's not just once for me either tbh
