Postmodernity is dead. Long live whatever is going on right now. It'll be dead before we can figure out what to call it.
I'm a few years removed from an academic context where I'm sure I could be properly corrected on this, but I've been lumping a lot of current post-postmodern of a certain flavor under the title of Vermeulen/van der Akker's definition of "Metamodernity" as the traditional postmodernity of the mid to late 20th century gives way to whatever we're experiencing today. Thats right, despite the harangues of cable newscasters, Postmodernity has been over for decades. Literary and artistic movements are rarely named while they live and breathe (unless they're some astroturfed "[PREFIX]-Punk" genre driven by posers) and so to try and name what's happening today is futile. But for simplicity's sake lets file this one under "Metamodern" so I can actually write this filmpost on the surrealist film "Greener Grass."
The last couple times I've mentioned the concept of metamodernity has been with Quentin Dupieux's surrealist film "Rubber" and-- on the absolute other side of the spectrum --Greta Gerwig's "Barbie." Greener Grass is like if the movies swapped directors, with the mind behind Mr. Oizo taking a crack at what dealing with life and womanhood in a pink-saturated nightmare is really like.
Anyone who grew up in an affluent suburb with a William Sonoma store in their local mall will likely resonate with this film. I think we all remember those , whip thin mothers of classmates who drove Escalades and wore outfits too intentional to not be expensive. Their kitchens were massive and uncooked in. The exercise classes they attended were always feminine, nonthreatening, and adhered to with iron wills usually reserved for Olympic training. One must be pretty like you were in college sorority but a homemaker like his mother in the 70s but "with it" in ways that don't conflict with the new Land Rover financed in your McMansion driveway. The performance of gender and class and perceived societal value is incredible, and that's exactly what Greener Grass is about.
The film talks about something much more complicated than "Barbie Goes To The Gynecologist." It's a film about performance, social hierarchies, and the injustice of artificiality thrust upon us by the manufactured standards of innocuous but deeply "wrong" systems. And it does so by creating a surreal world of skinjob characters pretending that everything is perfect, ignoring the graves their children play over as they conduct monstrous business with a smile and polite posturing. Everything is pink. Everything is perfect. Your son drowning himself and turning into a golden retriever is perfectly normal, even if he does flunk math class. It is dreadfully important you continue to be a good mother.
The fact that Covid killed this movie is a travesty. Go watch it.

A lot of people kinda don't understand the effects of racism and I've noticed "this person turned out to be a racist" seems to just kinda be on the level of "meh" for most people, so I just wanna take a moment to describe something that happened to me and how it affected me on more than a personal level in an rpc:
Imagine you've been friends with and writing with a small group of likeminded folk, having a LOT of fun, even sharing some personal information since you've been hitting it off so well.
Then, while in an rp server with said friends, one of them posts a picture of someone who looks exactly like you, albeit with stereotypically offensive and exaggerated features with a sign indicating how unintelligent they are, but also implying that your birth country should be nuked off the face of the planet.
You aren't angry so much as shocked, the anger hasn't had time to settle in yet, so you ask "uhh, what the fuck lol" and nobody seems to bat an eyelash. In fact they're all in agreement that this depiction of your people is hilarious and would make a wonderful gift for the poster's history teacher.
You, again, ask for an explanation and point out the imagery is insulting and dehumanizing and point out they ALL KNOW you are from this country, only to be told by the admin of the server "Well, I can see you're upset. I'm sorry you got offended, but it's just political humor, it wasn't supposed to upset you. Nobody in this server is trying to upset you." so ultimately, you decide to leave. You're hurt and confused, but mostly still in a state of disbelief.
Your mutual friend who lives in a different timezone was still in the server and contacts you the next morning, indicating they also recently left but also expressed that the rest of server basically spent the entire night making fun of you for being 'so gd upset over nothing'.
Now you have to live with this knowledge that you've not only lost an entire group of friends and fellow writers, but you can't say anything in public about it for fear of "causing drama". So you keep silent, you don't say anything or drop names, you confer only with your friend who also left the server.
Then even close (or so you thought) mutuals start blocking you en masse and you still can't say a solitary word to defend yourself, for fear of losing what few friends you have left in this community.
Like, sure it's not so in your face as a public lynching, but this is HOW racism affects people like me. It's not simply an isolated incident of someone saying I'm a 'chinky-eyed, dog-eating bitch' who should go back to their own 'filthy country' and me getting to call them out in public and having all of my allies hug me and tell me I'm valid.
These people were supposed to be my allies. That is how deep-rooted and insidious racism is in society and it's a lot more than just name-calling and moments of outright bullying.
I see a lot of people saying they're not fans of bigotry and that it's 'against their rules', yet when people have DNIs on their profiles and carrds and outright say it's because of racism/bigotry, it's seen as a red flag??? or when drama does inevitably happen and receipts start getting dropped, both parties are blocked immediately?
I get not wanting to have conflict in your happy fun Barbie doll-smashing space, but if your friend is feeling unsafe and betrayed on that level, like... wouldn't you want to at least hear them out? Idk. I see a lot of massive double-standards where 'drama' is concerned and it just kinda makes me wonder whose comfort level I should really be prioritizing.

Kinda conflicted about pronouns and wondered about your opinion on it bc I like your opinions. Basically I use sex based pronouns for everybody mainly because most trans people don't pass and that's the pronoun that comes naturally to mind (if I'm trying to be polite I will avoid pronouns entirely or occasionally use they, but it takes a lot of effort to slow your language down no matter what anyone claims! and I cannot call a nonpassing MTF she on principle.) in other words I make little to no conscious effort about pronouns, and take what my brain hands me based on their appearance.
But I notice that for (truly) passing trans people I would be fighting against this natural perception to sex them correctly, like N*kki Tutorials reads as a she for example so I just don't fight it and I call her "she" even though I technically know she's male and if anyone asked me her sex I would say male. To me she's a "male woman" even though that's paradoxical. This level of passing is pretty rare though (like H*nter Scafer and whichever one was in Barbie don't even fit this criteria for me.) What do you do? Do you think it's important to make the effort to still use sex based pronouns for truly passing MTF to hold the line against the whole concept of changing sex?
Yeah, I understand the hesitation in calling men who convincingly pass as female “he.” It feels forced. That said, I still do it lmao. It’s like you said, it’s a principle thing. I don’t believe men who pass as women are women. I won’t call a man “she,” even if he’s lucky enough to have delicate features. Wrt nikkitutorials, I didn’t know he was trans until it was revealed (and I side eye anyone who was like “duh, look at him 🙄” he’s just tall) so it’s weird to call him he. But if I think like, “this person is male,” it’s easier. Male doesn’t mean masculine, it just means male. Nikkitutorials is male. Nikkitutorials is a he. Buck angel is a she. These are facts, not subjective interpretation.

Team Sky Anon: Chiaki what's your thoughts on the Minecraft movie trailer? I'm personally excited for it
Alright, I knew people were going to ask me about this...Strap in boys and girls. I'm gonna try and make this brief, but fair warning, you might not like what I'm about to say.
I'm going to explain something VERY CAREFULLY before I give my take on this movie.
Because more often than not, I don't have heavy, or strong opinions on things, especially games. I enjoy games, regardless of how good or bad they are, and the same applies to movies or TV shows based on those games.
But when I DO have an opinion on something, and people ask for me to explain it, I try to remain 100% completely honest when I give my takes, regardless of the risk of getting backlash, or starting arguments. I just straight up avoid these sorts of conflicts, like I should, but I'm never afraid to state what I believe.
Because at the end of the day, it's my opinion, and if you disagree, that's totally fine, because it's just a game/movie. We're not talking about genuine politics here.
This time is no different, so all I can request is that you hear me out, because it's of my understanding that the internet absolutely despises this trailer, and...it's not like I don't understand why. It's just another case of Warner Bros being stupid and problematic.
But...when I watched the Minecraft movie trailer for the first time...I really, REALLY liked it...!
And that's basically my take in a nutshell. I don't think this trailer comes anywhere CLOSE to how amazing the trailer for Sonic 3 was, but I still think it was a great teaser.
I definitely have some concerns and questions, like why aren't the human's blocky, why do the greenscreen effects look so...off, and why does Jason Momoa look like he's trying to cosplay a Barbie Girl?
But this is just a TEASER trailer. This won't give us any of the answers we're looking for. The OFFICIAL trailer will.
But besides the point, let me just try my hardest to explain myself, and explain why it is I like this trailer.
So, right off the bat, the first thing I love is the world. Minecraft itself. Everything in here looks so detailed, and the production design is fantastic.
Another thing I like is also the cast. The main 5 actors that we see in the trailer are Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Eugine Hanson as Henry.
Sebastian is relatively new to the acting scene, and I know people have their concerns about the way this cast is presented in the teaser, but as a reminder, it's very rare for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to phone in a bad performance, Emma Myers is incredibly famous for A Good Girls Guide to Murder and Wednesday, in both of which she's awesome, and Danielle Brooks is an actual Oscar Nominee.
All in all, I like this cast, and I think they're gonna give us a really fun show.
And the last thing I love, as a gamer, is the Minecraft easter eggs in the teaser. Such as breaking down a block and having it turn small, crafting stuff on a crafting table...
E-Even if that looks a little funky...
And the creatures too. People keep dissing the sheep online, but I'm sorry to break it to you, if a Minecraft sheep was real, THAT'S what it WOULD look like. And the Creeper too! The Creeper gave me a huge smile!
But again, the hate for this trailer is astounding, and again, I understand it. But also, at the same time, I think it's a little overblown. All of this discourse and for what? Because people don't want a live action movie cast in an uncanny valley world made of cubes? Because the mobs look "ugly?"
I understand that I probably just look pretty simple minded right now, and for the record, I would prefer an animated Minecraft movie, but let me make it clear that I don't hate this.
And I am more than open to talking about this movie, and people's opinions on it, but my biggest question is...what exactly was everyone expecting? I know people are mad, but we got basically exactly what we were promised from this trailer, and this is exactly what it would be like if humans entered the Minecraft world.

I just went to see barbie and oppenheimer together in theaters and I have a lot of thoughts on both
NOTE: as far as oppenheimer goes I just wanna make the disclaimer that when I refer to oppenheimer, im referring to the character. I'm very well aware that nolan depicted him in a favorable light (even if the framing of the movie would lead you to believe otherwise). LISTEN to survivors of nuclear fallout (particularly the indigenous people of new mexico who were affected most by irl!oppenheimer's testing) and understand that not everyone is going to love what appears to be the glorifying of a man who made the atomic bomb possible. I tried to differentiate for film commentary purposes the vast difference between oppenheimer the horrifying historical figure and oppenheimer the sad little conflicted pretty man okay? okay, lets get this show on the road.
THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR BOTH FILMS
I went to see barbie first, because in my mind, it was a strategic decision — did I want to be underwhelmed after a three hour film filled with bomb-y sfx? no, not really. so I went to see it before oppenheimer just so both films could have their intended effects.
I was not prepared for barbie to be as visceral as it was. greta gerwig is a GENIUS with the way she directed this film. in particular, my favorite parts were:
- weird barbie knowing everything because she has, quite literally, been through the most
- ken thinking the patriarchy wasn't just about male dominated society, but rather male-on-a-horse dominated society
- THEY HAD A PREGNANT BARBIE! THEY HAD A WHEELCHAIR BARBIE! THEY HAD SO MANY DIFFERENT BARBIES AND THEY WEREN'T SHY ABOUT IT <3
- og!barbie calling an old woman beautiful the first time she ever calls a human being beautiful just means so much to me
- ALLAN!!!! ALLAN NEEDS HIS OWN MOVIE HE'S MY SPECIAL LITTLE GUY!!!!
- the unexpected fourth wall breaks were quite funny and very well paced, and added a layer of realism to the film that I was not at all prepared for
I don't think there's a single wrong thing I can think of with this film. I sincerely hope it receives multiple awards and I sincerely believe it will! this is a movie for the girls and the girl understanders and if you are either, go see it ASAP!
---
after barbie, I went to see oppenheimer. I too, was not prepared for this film. I already knew from the internets review of christopher nolan that, as a woman at least, I'd have my reservations about whether or not it passed the bechtel test. it did not, but the thing that surprised me most was that I didn't mind that aspect.
I watched a man consumed by his work and his morals and their conflict with one another play out in such an intense marriage of science, politics, etc. and I watched the results of it, how his life was torn to pieces by the american government, colleagues, and the people most affected by his work (this last one is in more of the abstract sense because of course nolan would never outright give a voice to them, way to go ig).
and then, I realized I watched a film that truly depicted a main character I could sympathize with at some points, but never fully empathize with if I ever met the man (the real oppenheimer, not murphy's oppie). this is a main character you don't leave the theater loving or hating. his life, his work, his conflicts in both, do not paint him in any type of way — he does all of that himself, and I think those who left the movie understanding or even liking oppenheimer as a historical figure missed several points of the film that would try and dissuade that conclusion.
these were my favorite parts of the film:
- seeing glimpses of kitty oppenheimer and understanding, just from those glimpses, that she is the backbone of her marriage to robert. there isn't a single moment (except maybe how she got together with him in the first place) that I disagreed with
- now I know how heavily talked about the florence pugh scenes were and I do disagree with how the metaphor of robert "confessing his sins" of infidelity were played out in the manner they were. I am glad that his vices weren't shied away from. we were given everything about him, the good and the bad and the horrifying
- the imagery of how oppie's mind was thinking and processing the physics and the theories of the atom, the overlaying of the sound affects of applause, train tracks, a bomb detonating. from an artistic standpoint this is just *chefs kiss*
- the moment he understood the magnitude of his work, even in just glimpses, and how that left him in such a state after being applauded for the central work that helped to kill tens of thousands of people across the world. the vast difference between his reaction to it and the president of the united states demeaning him for having emotions about it
overall, I'm just glad that I wasn't watching cillian murphy portraying a fictionalized historical figure. he embodied the role in such a way that I wasn't watching the man oppenheimer (from history) nor was I watching cillian murphy. they'd become inseparable in my mind by the time the film was over, creating some not so secret third oppie that wasn't a person pulled from time nor was he just a character.
overall, if you're looking for a film you can sit through and leave unscathed, I would not recommend this one. it will stay with you. and it will make you uncomfortable. and if it does, then it worked.
I will also be quite shocked if this one doesn't receive any awards.
---
now, let's talk about barbenheimer as a unit because it's a metric FUCKTON of the dichotomy of being human and that is beautiful, just BEAUTIFUL to me. where barbie illustrates the beauty and positive meaning you can make of your life, oppenheimer illustrated the horror and ransacking you can make of your life. seeing these two one after the other will have you both loving and hating yourself, and either way, maybe you're right!
here's the difference between them that I loved best though.
at least for me, barbie is a mirror. it's a mirror into womanhood, into the inherent ordeal that is existing, and how you can make the best of it an embrace every part of yourself, even the parts that are confusing. and then you get oppenheimer, and if barbie is a mirror, oppenheimer is a window. it's a window into the horrific parts of discovery, into the terrifying parts of being human that are terrible to look at in oneself, it's a window into how someone makes the worst version of himself, and how it comes back to haunt him. but oppenheimer CAN be a mirror, too, for that matter.
seeing these back to back was not a mistake by any means, and if you're planning on sitting through five hours of film anytime in the near future, make it these two. I'm so very serious about that

Hello! I really love the progress of the heiress and the hierophant. The chemistry between Ino and Itachi is just magical and magnetic. What are your head canons regarding Itaino?
To be honest, I'm never quite sure how to answer questions about ship headcanons. I think it's because I don't think of them as one unit, but as separate individuals who, due to their personalities and proclivities, fit together in a dynamic like two pieces of a puzzle.
I see Itachi as someone who is a deeply loyal person, but also a very intense person, often in an extreme way. He doesn't care much about 99% of people beyond a surface level required to maintain standing and reputation in social circles. But when he decides he does care about someone, he dials it up to an 11. He's 0 to 60 in 3.5, in the immortal words of our lady and savior Rhianna. Obviously, Sasuke is #1 always and forever. Aside from Sasuke, canonically we know that chosen person for him was always Shisui (however you choose to interpret the nature of their relationship, that remains true). Shisui is generally accepted as an extroverted, highly gregarious, cunning trickster type, i.e., kind of the opposite of Itachi's personality. I think Itachi would be drawn to people who fall somewhere on that spectrum: loud, feelings-forward, (sometimes, to varying degrees) politically savvy types who are either A) well-liked and popular or B) outcast pariahs doing their own thing and fuck everyone else. Ino and Shisui fall into the first category, and people like Karin and Deidara fall into the latter, but both types are very much "this is me, love me or hate me, I'm here and I'm not going anywhere and you get the immense honor of dealing with me" vibes. Whereas Itachi strikes me as more the type to bend and cave to the path of least resistance in order to go unnoticed or avoid conflict/confrontation with people if he can help it. He's duty and honor, and he needs someone who is like "but what if we got drunk and committed arson and then kissed a bit after". Having that person fill in the gaps in his personality and preferences would be exciting and probably also very frustrating for him, and I think it would hook him so hard.
Ino is someone I see as kind of a contradiction. She has all these cool abilities that allow her to read people literally, and a personality that, to me, seems very much the type to hone in on people's motivations and attitudes. At the same time, though, she is someone who is tunnel-vision determined to achieve her goals (I'm thinking of her in the 4th war in what I consider to be one of the most badass moments for any single character in the manga when she was like "I just have to do it!" re telepathically connecting everyone in the Shinobi Forces right after her dad died). If she decides to do something, it is fucking getting done, bar none. And if we apply that attitude to people, to figuring people out, we have someone who will dig and dig until they draw blood and still keep going. She deals in lies and secrets and neither are safe from her. Pairing her with someone like Itachi who is the cream filling in a roll cake baked out of lies and manipulation is like...both the best and worst thing I can do to either of them. Plus, she is that politically savvy social butterfly who would drag him out of his mission, mission, meticulously steam clean my ANBU uniform, mission, repeat cycle to live his life a little bit. She likes being in charge and running shit, and I think someone like Itachi, who has been sort of forced into that role his whole life whether he wanted it or not, would find surprising and intense relief over letting her take those reins so he doesn't have to deal with it for five minutes.
So idk if that really addresses your question. But this is sort of how I think about them individually and what that would look like when I smash them together Barbie doll style and make them kiss.
#some yammering shippy headcanon stuff under the break#itaino#they're in love your honor#lol I think my Itachi ships are showing…#uchiha itachi#yamanaka ino#character study#is this what the youths call meta?#naruto meta

barbie spoilers below
okay so my opinion is this is a totally harmless long running joke about how barbie's don't have genitals that's coming out at an unfortunate time where any kind of language surrounding body parts is highly sensitized due to the political climate. that said i don't think the movie was suggesting the women in barbieland weren't "real women", they just live in a world where sex doesn't exist but the point is even in a sexless society they can still be subjected to the ken's patriarchal domination. its not like the ken's are using the barbie's for sex cause they cannot even have sex but even in the absence their genders can and do exist i think its almost like saying it doesn't matter what body parts you have.
also barbie leaving to go to the real world at the end is one part of the movie i'm still conflicted on but i believe the point is to show that she was disappointed that barbies didn't solve anything out there for human girls and she wanted to be out there to do "real" work and that means getting some gross messy human shit that comes with being a woman in real life you know like getting your period, going to the obgyn for pap smears, hormones, etc stuff that barbies in barbieland don't have to do? i totally can see why that would be icky in this current climate when terfs literally won't shut up about body parts though. also i think this movie is just a very basic feminism 101 for little kids so i don't expect it to be highly nuanced about everything.
maybe it would've been better if she just said like i have to take a dump or something tho aalksfjskl we know greta wanted fart jokes in the movie
#barbie anon here!!!#this is just how i saw it but im open to other interps#my problems with the movie are more to do with consumerist capitalism stuff its pushing along with the feminism

Some exemples to my other posts's ideas
Inaction/Neutrality. (Cowardice? Refusal to Save? To Rebel? To Protect? To Punish? To get Revenge? To Fight Back? To Stop? Or denied you the right to take said action?)
Abuse? Refugees? Punishment? Insult? Revenge? Injustice? Didn't save you/take you from the bad situation you're in? Let the person hurt you? Expect to accept the bullshit?
Doran Martell, Hinata (for Neji), Thranduil, Jaime Lannister (for Rhaella), the Valar.
Ungratefulness (Betray after they Help/Save you? Refuse to aid after everything you did and sacrifice for them? Don't valorize you enough?).
Defended when they lied. Killed because they helped you. Demand help/forgiveness after what they did to you. Got in trouble for helping them and was abandoned.
Walder Frey, Ariadne, Cersei (with Ned), Daenerys (with the Starks).
Not taking your side in the conflict. They forgive and stay with the person who wronged you (both of you?) or take their side, befriend or ally with said person, even help in hurting you or save them. Assist in the cover up. Or even giving a false testimony.
Finrod, Celebrimbor, King Viserys, Ned, Ollie, Sawada Nana, Wei Wuxian.
A character does shit and runs away, leaving their friends/family behind to suffer the consequences (or stigma) of being associated with them.
Defector, Run Away Bride, Evil Lineage, Kidnapped by Enemies
Rhaegar, Paris, Orochimaru (with Anko), Iemitsu.
Traitor of the Folk or Race/Category Traitor, maybe can be related to the '•' above or a Hunter of His Own Kind. (Inner-Prejudice maybe? Denial of Origin? Mixed Heritage? Or marrying someone of a 'lesser' kin can be considered 'treason'. Depends which the Folk in question is the considered superior/inferior, or can be a more Grey area too)
Raised by Rival/Adopted, Pretend to be Evil, Survival, Exception
Honerva (Haggar), Mance Rayder (kinda?), Norlin 'Silver Zoro', Uchiha Itachi, Conner (the Android), Raine Whispers.
Blitz and Fizzarolli from HB are considered that by Striker
Having a Relationship (or even children) with a member of a group you are prejudicial against is another level of wild shit

Followed for the irreproachable Camilla Hect take and hi derby coach! I play derby in Nashville, tho I'm looking to move because it mega sucks to be trans here rn :/ Do you know of any especially trans friendly or unfriendly leagues?
Also so torn because I'm such a sucker for codependent as hell cam/pal and I'm horny for both of them so I'm biased in favor of smashing them together like Barbies 😂 but aroace cam is so good,,,,,,,
Okay, disclaimer: I've been retired for a few years, so my first-hand knowledge is stale; and since I'm not on Bookface or Birdsite anymore, I'm not super up to date on rumors either. Wall of text follows:
I'd advise you to find someplace where the political climate is better, and then worry about the league. Your leaguemates could be the biggest allies in the world, but if your state government is trying to make it illegal for you to exist, there really isn't much your team can do for you except help you pack the moving van.
This isn't to say blue-city-in-a-blue-state leagues are always the greatest; the catch is that those leagues will really like to think of themselves as inclusive. As long as you support their self-image, they'll love you! For reals!
But if you find yourself calling in and pointing out ways in which their behavior falls short of how they want to be seen… there will be some leaguemates who respond by Doing the Work to improve, and there will be others who want you to stop creating conflict and being divisive and aggressive and they're feeling very attacked right now, and all the ways in which they feel uncomfortable will be coded in ways that you don't conform to unexamined cis white femininity.
So the thing to figure out is which of those groups has more influence in a league, and that pretty much requires talking to trans people who are currently active members.
#roller derby#social justice pivot#transmisia#this can be relevant to BIPoC skaters too#but I can't pretend to speak for their experiences

*narrator voice*: no, that something did not heal yet.
A small rant on the use of media as twisted symbols and media responsibility.
I see a lot of Barbie vs. Oppenheimer online. I don't understand why the two are treated as enemies, there is sometimes the discourse that if you like one you will despise the other and vice versa. Why the moral competition? One is a fun put and very important message to society about equality, the other focuses on the horrid consequences on naivety and science. One prompts us to notice the discrimination in this world and go against it and the other to seek further information on an absolutely tragic series of events and their consequences. 1. Educating the audience: Both prompt us to get educated, seek information on our own, be more responsible for our decisions and behaviour. The defies the first critique I see online about both films: they are not a lesson, a documentary aiming to educate us, they are artistical prompts that motivate us to think deeper. I think it's important to note here that films are not always meant to educate us. Education falls under the responsibility of schools and governments first and foremost. When that fails we can turn to media and other indivuals but should not except education from everyone and everything.
2. Endorsement: Another critique I sometimes see is that Oppenheimer is either celebrating death or was not clear on the negative aspects of the bomb consequences. My question is why? The whole film is centred on how much of a mistake and morally wrong the bombing and run to arms were. Why would you need a 3 words phrase spoken directly into the camera for that to come across if the films is for adults capable of thinking? Of course extremist aside, who regardless of their thinking capabilities will always choose to preach only what benefits their world view, which won't change with the level of clarity if a message. I am guessing the argument came not from watching the film itself but from seeing some insufferable people purposefully twisting Oppenheimer message to meet their own agenda. Political extremist tend to do that with every piece of media regardless of its nature, plot, message. An egregious example is the children cartoon Moomin being twisted by the Polish right wing party into a symbol of female submission and misogyny. Does that make the cartoon bad? Since it was twisted and its original message was different, no, the cartoon was not bad.
Therefore stop judging art (and media in general) by a portion of audience that likes to twist it to feel selfrighteous. Judge these people instead!
3. Activism around the work: I sometimes see also posts about Nolan not getting in touch with the victims of the bomb testing and attacks. Again, a film is a prompt: just as journalists should not bare the responsibility of solving the conflict they are reporting or pay damage for the conflict consequences, a film or other piece of media should not be responsible for solving the consequences of historical events it is portraying. Yes, we should keep each other to a high standard and do our best to help repair the damage done. I agree but it is always in the goodwill of a person to take additional steps, it is not their responsibility. We should instead always keep accountable those directly responsible for certain events (companies and individuals profiting off of patriarchy, homophobic parties and organizations, US government for their decisions during WW2 and the Cold War, individuals ignoring the immoral treatment of locals), they are the ones we should protest with, be angry at, demand action from. I sadly did not see yet a single post directed at any of the parties directly responsible.
If we were to follow the logic of the storyteller bearing the responsibility of the event's consequences, we could argue that Barbie's crew did not actively get in touch with all the women neglected by Hollywood via their patriarchal structure, did not cast more minorities, or did not show more inequality and discrimination issues. Anyone could always do more for society, a director, an actor, me, you, ecc. To me, if a piece of media has successfully managed to get its audience interested in a topic, it has already done its job very well. If the creator takes another step to be additionally socially responsible, it is a bonus. No one however should be guilt tripped for not doing more. Not a director, not an actor, not me, not you. Unless of course the lack of action is malicious or pure laziness.
So to sum it up, stop judging media by those that twist it in their favour and demand accountability from those directly responsible for events and actions.

repost and rate your muse's traits out of 10 in each category !
★ ⸻ COMPASSION: 3/10. thanatos isn't the most touchy feely by any stretch of the imagination; duty first, play later never. but she has also experienced tremendous loss and pain, and fundamentally hates seeing those cycles repeat. so her empathy is there, but compassion...rather low.
★ ⸻ BITTERNESS: 8/10. thanatos elects to not showcase much by way of forgiveness, which leads to a lot of bitterness...for select people, of course.
★ ⸻ HAPPINESS: 2-6/10. she's not the most outwardly happy, but she is rather content with certain aspects of her life. her family still being as oddly close as it is, despite the age and breadth of occupations, does make her feel grounded. but every day she has to face her trauma in the course of doing her job, and while her emotional support extrovert hermes does help a lot, it's not a flawless solution. and there is a restlessness within her that she cannot shake, that leads to bouts of discontent.
★ ⸻ POLITENESS: 6/10. her personal take on manners is that they are a tool, and as with all tools, they have a designated use. she's rather polite due to her station, but she's also completely blunt and will not pull punches if she's feeling cornered, or if she's got her eye on something she wants. in a lot of ways, her status protects her, and she's only polite in so much as she has to be in front of all these young, egotistical gods.
★ ⸻ MORALITY: 5/10. death is the great equalizer. and because death is the great equalizer, that means than's morality is pretty neutral. she'll make a strong case against her sisters for why she should have domain over a soul instead of the keres, but that's fundamentally her being hungry; nothing to do with the morality of the situation itself.
★ ⸻ CHIVALRY: 3/10. she likes it in other people! but she's not the kind to be chivalrous. any bravery or outspokenness was taken rather abruptly from her by sisyphus, and she still hasn't quite recovered.
★ ⸻ PRIDE: 9/10. she takes pride in her work and pride in her appearance, and even though the latter is because of consistent internalized ableism, she's still quite prideful.
★ ⸻ HONESTY: 6/10. this barbie is a liar!! she likes to keep things close to her chest and that includes personal truths. she'll respond with anger and hurt long before she lets someone in for honest reasons.
★ ⸻ BRAVERY: 0/10. she does not consider herself brave, and she does not consider her job to be brave either. she knows she hides behind hermes, behind charon, behind hades; behind her mother and her twin, even. she is not a brave god; she's just blunt and powerful.
★ ⸻ RECKLESSNESS: 0/10. similar to the bravery, thanatos needs a structured plan with multiple fail safes and ways of exiting rather than just plunging on ahead. she is far, far from reckless, and it is not a trait she appreciates in others, either. now her mortal self on the other hand...
★ ⸻ AMBITION: 5/10. she's not really a power hungry kind of goddess; she's content to let others squabble around accomplishing goals. she has her job and she does it well. but there is a fundamental part of her that knows, in the end of everything, she will win. everything must die; even gods.
★ ⸻ LOYALTY: 8/10. she is incredibly loyal to those who have earned it, even if they make her feel all kinds of conflicted emotions, like hermes. it's not a blind loyalty, however; back to the bluntness, she will use it when necessary.
★ ⸻ LOVE: 9/10. she's a secret sweetheart and lovergirl and it is hidden beneath so many layers of anguish, trauma, coldness, and career that many don't take the time to find it. she does love her family, though, including her adoptive sisters through hekate and her favored ouranics.
★ ⸻ SENSE OF FAMILY: 10/10. family is everything to her, and that's why she's so abrasive with them at times. many people think she actually detests hypnos, but the truth is, they're just so damn old and their relationship has already been tested in ways that younger deities can't comprehend, that it's just how she shows love.
★ ⸻ ATTRACTIVENESS: 10/10. this lady is incredibly hot. look at those eyes. look at those delicate princess waves. every nyx kid is hot, shut up.
★ ⸻ AGILITY: 10/10. between teleportation and quick reflexes, death is fast. thanatos is also a very flighty as opposed to fighty kind of girl, so. millennia of practice has added up.
★ ⸻ SEX DRIVE: 10/10. death consumes and that includes craving carnal energy from those she can get it from. she just has specific tastes, and a grueling schedule, so when she gets an outlet, she doesn't let go of it all that easily.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I love your blog because of your writing, your fic reblogs and your feminist reblogs 💜 It has a lot of things that I like, it makes me feel like I'm not alone in my opinions and that maybe I can find someone that shares them and my interests! You don't need to post this if you don't want to, but thank you for your blog (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
Omg, this has to be one of the best messages I ever received! 😭
Honestly I get some shit and hate thrown at me for being feminist, as any feminist does, especially in this blog that is focused on erotic content because of the nature of the majority of the community 💀 So receiving messages of other women and girls who also enjoy videogames and erotic fanfics while also having feminist ideas makes me feel finally not alone 💜
It means the world to me, truly. Because in feminist environments I always feel like I will get called a pervert for liking Genshin and writing smut about it, but in gamer and fanfic environments I get called a prude or a feminazi/transphobe for not complying to the gender ideology that dominates the field (and politics all around the world except for China and Russia) So I'm always caught in the middle. I'm a person who cares a lot about politics, economy, but fundamentally about human rights and especially the human rights of women who are trampled all the time. (Shout out to WDI for making a manifesto of women's sex based rights that is slowly getting support and being signed by women all over the world despite having the queer lobby trying to crush it down with the full force of the political machine they move) But I'm also a person who enjoys having hobbies, like any other. And those hobbies include videogames, reading, writing, and this blog is the space I reserve for that. But of course we people are a whole so my writing and this blog reflect the things I'm most interested in, that's why it's centered around of heterosexual and bisexual female main characters and their desires and turmoils regarding men, misogyny, masculinity, shame, desire of freedom, etc. In some fics like Better Find Husbandos the mc is deeply traumathized because before arriving in Teyvat, she lived in a misogynystic world like ours, and it's reflected on her thoughts about men and sex. In others like Catboys in the house, the main character lives in a mathriarcal society that doesn't oppress men, somewhat like the Barbie movie, and the conflict is placed in other things while her relationships with men are pure comfort, and this is a way of escapism. Assembled Love is a bit in between, the setting is in a world like ours, but it won't depict explicit forms of abuse like Better Find Husbandos will, the main character will suffer sexism at school but not its extreme and more violent ways.
I'm working a lot on my blog this new year and preparing a special post talking about why I started this blog, which has everything to do with this, with my struggle with sex, with being female in this pathriarcal world that I started suffering from a very young age. Of my journey from the deepest depths of internalized misogyny to the battle I'm fighting against it nowadays.
I was scared to reblog feminist content in this blog at first but I decided to stay true to myself. And what a pleasant surprise when I found other Genshin fans reblogging it as well! It was so worth taking the risk and face my fears. I found that very much the same as it happened to me, when other people read feminist takes well explained they find out they completely agree with them, that it was just that the media was painting feminism as something horrible without even letting them know what it really was about, because they know that when women are allowed to discover what it really is about, we dive right in! 💜 I used to hate feminism as a kid because I was completely misled about what it was about, like the majority of women out there. I found it on accident, and I feel it's so unfair I wasn't exposed to it as a kid before the damage to my mind was done. I feel I found it really late, at like 20, but the worst part is that other women find it even later and some women are completely deprived of it. It only changed my life for the better. It's painful, no doubt, to realize the injustice and abuse I and all women are subjected everywhere, as Andrea Dworkin said:
Many women, I think, resist feminism because it is an agony to be fully conscious of the brutal misogyny which permeates culture, society, and all personal relationships.
It is as if our oppression were cast in lava eons ago and now it is granite, and each individual woman is buried inside the stone. Women try to survive inside the stone, buried in it. Women say, I like this stone, its weight is not too heavy for me.
Women defend the stone by saying that it protects them from rain and wind and fire. Women say, all I have ever known is this stone, what is there without it?
And it is a brutal agony. But I find it worth it because even if being conscious of it makes me feel powerless and depressed, when I compare my life now to how it was when I had no clue what was going on, I see it's much better. Being unaware of the oppression didn't make it disappear, it made me even more anxious and depressed because I didn't understand what was going on, I thought I was doing something wrong, I thought it was my fault, I hated myself, I hated my body. Nothing changed my life more than one day at like 18 finally realizing that the problem wasn't my body but society, and that was like 2 years before discovering feminism. Like, REAL feminism, as Andrea Dworkin said, "not the fun kind". When I discovered that women before me had the same ideas I had been having centuries ago, that the could articulate them way better than I did, that they wrote lots of books about it, that there was an entire movement that was discretely and deliberatedly HID from me that I only found it on accident by finally daring to talk with other women on tge internet about my traumatizing experiences was MINDBLOWING. Yes, it made me FURIOUS that I had been kept away from thia treasure my whole life. But I also felt relief in the sense that I finally felt that I was not alone. I had never been alone. It is like Simone de Beauvoir expresses in The Second Sex, very academically but overall saying that women are raised to be loyal to men and to hate other women and be wary of them like they are the competence so that we don't recognize ourselves as a social class and we are unable to lead a revolution. We are raised to think that we are alone. Helpless. That the other women are bad, are shallow, are inferior, are competence, thst "the worst enemy of a woman is another woman" instead of the men that oppress us, so that we turn our backs on other women and seek safety and protection from a man because it feels it's inevitable, it's the only way. But it turned out, it was just another lie in the wall. I was not alone. And that, along with discovering that there were words to describe what was being done to me: for example, discovering the term "gaslighting" changed my life because I had a ruthless male bully during hisghschool that made me feel like I was crazy, a bad person, humilliated me in front of everyone, spread rumors about me and made me look like the bad guy, etc, and I could never describe the twisted mind games he played with me, no one believed he bullied me because he never punched me or groped me. If I had known what he was doing I wouldn't have spent my teenage years wondering WHY I felt something was wrong and feeling like I couldn't articulate my feelings and experiences with words.
But I'm not alone, so THANKS A MILLION FOR THIS MESSAGE!
I genuinely love you 💜

have really conflicting views on barbie because on one hand it certainly was a liberal feminist shitfest of capitalist apologism and glanced over feminist issues like race, class, queerness and disability, but there are also movies which have attempted to do their criticism more subtly and yes i mean spiderverse, of race & the police, and fail similarly but it's less jarring i think, because spiderverse was not attempting to be As political and thus fulfilled its vague criticism well enough, while the unmet promises in barbie are glaring by comparison. perhaps this is because feminism has so much resting on her soldiers-- rightfully so, but does this mean that feminist(-adjacent) media is crticized more harshly by onlookers, particularly by gender marginalized people? (as we know, of course the whites and cishet men will be upset about spiderverse and barbie respectively no matter what.) i think so. the criticism is justified but the tendency to see one film as open season for criticism and one largely, off limits (save for discussions of the workers' conditions & miguel's characterization-- a few [mostly black] leftists also discuss the copaganda in spiderverse but this is not as mainstream as the first point, it seems) is strange. particularly because mainstream liberalism has encorporated more understanding of racism & antiblackness into itself than it has of feminism (performatively, of course), which makes one believe spiderverse should garner more criticism? one could hypothesize, though, that the ambiguity of liberal feminist politics leaves a haze of discontent around the issues media fails to approach, as it's not tangible exactly what is antifeminist or (most prominently) /why/. what is the essence of barbie's failure to fulfill its promises of feminism?
of course, in general enough liberal circles, neither are criticized. but if you get a little leftier, you begin to see this phenomenon of barbie being criticized more often, or-- more broadly, should i say. i don't think the fate of feminism rests of the success of any franchise, or having better feelings about some media, but i do wonder if having grace for barbie is the best option. best option because, despite its flaws, barbie was a more feminist film than most and thus, pleasant to watch as a woman. it centered women, acknowledged misogyny, and sometimes that alone is just rare. it's also self aware of its capitalist failings, at least. i believe barbie came out around the same time as that "the idol" show, and god knows which type of media i'd like to see more often.
saw this review from a feminist i respect (will add review if i can find it lol) on barbie so i thought i might reevaluate my feelings.

YIPPEEEEEE I'M SOSOSOSO EXCITED FOR THE FIC I'm glad it sounds like you've had a pretty good day, it's well-deserved! :] I love Barbie aesthetically... I love Meta Knight...
OH BUT YEAH this was actually my third time watching The Deer King but it is JUST as good as the first... As I've Said I really love Tsutsumi's character and his little daughter and how their relationship progresses [Top Ten Most Doting Fathers Every Other Scene Makes Me Violently Clutch Whatever I Can Get My Hands On], BUT ASIDE FROM THAT the cast as a whole is very enjoyable!
Although it's a novel adaptation, it's also really intuitive to understand the setting and lore thanks to its decision to put personal conflicts in the foreground while the politics and major themes develop in the background, on top of some pretty well-utilized exposition and the movie's strong visual storytelling/direction/editing.
Visually It's Stunning, there isn't a single frame that's not SEAMLESS, but what stands out to me consistently throughout every scene is definitely how much weight there is to every movement [like The Physics Are Off The Charts, but it's also exaggerated to emphasize things in the way only animation can], and how strong the character "acting" is.
OVERALL. MAGNIFIQUE. I do Highly Recommend checking it out if you were interested :] Tsutsumi's character isn't the type to talk much but y'know... proud of him...
DON'T BE EXCITED YOU'RE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR DISAPPOINTMENT but if i release it any time soon.. i hope you find some enjoyment from it.. but omg meta knight :)

i really enjoyed this critique, thank you for sharing! i agreed with a lot of her points and learned a lot too!
youtube
how people lauded barbie as a film that was going to save the industry, but it was padding the wallets of a studio that was (at the time of promo) trying to crush writers and actors
plot points were lazy and wrapped up too quickly, like the daughter being anti-barbie and suddenly becoming pro-barbie sometime during one of the montages, or the mother-daughter conflict being resolved way too quickly
spoon feeding the main points: YES. this is one of the main reasons i was unimpressed with america's "iconic" speech about womanhood. the audience is not trusted to think for themselves at all... maybe because if we did, we'd be wondering why they weren't allowing barbie, the doll/icon, to be criticized at all?
IT'S NOT SUBVERSIVE. MATTEL WAS IN ON IT. and mattel knows better than anyone that its bottom line needs to make up for the fact that barbie is deeply criticized/doesn't fit into our current political landscape--so it created a nostalgic film for ADULTS to rehabilitate the problematic outdated IP, just like disney does
mattel's involvement was so hamfisted and annoying. their "self-awareness" does not absolve them because self-awareness that keeps the status quo is just pointless!
MATTEL LITERALLY SAID THEY WANT TO BECOME AN IP COMPANY MANAGING FRANCHISES INSTEAD OF A TOY COMPANY! refusing to admit this was a giant ip commercial isn't subversive, it's refusing to admit reality.
barbie uses "cool capitalism" to use anti-capitalist messaging (feminism, equality) to its advantage. barbie is "self-aware," pre-packaged feminism, and so visually stunning, so likable, that it deflects criticism. now if you critique barbie, you're anti-feminist, you don't care about cinema, you don't care about women, you're being contrarian. (this was imo one of the best points of the entire video and i would encourage everyone to watch it.)
the above is similar to what i was saying by how we should all be way more uncomfortable with barbie, its popularity, its marketing, margot being a human doll, and so on. like. people have swallowed this completely soulless propaganda, hook line and sinker, and many people do not wish to actually face any of the problems, even privately.
also, great time to plug jessica valenti's great piece about beauty and barbie's marketing
Have you seen ‘Felling Cynical about Barbie’ by Broey Deschanel on Youtube? If not, would be interested to see if you agree with her points if you get a chance to watch!
watching it rn!
