thank you for answering!! I had a feeling it was benson's abuser too;; besides everything that happened *after* he saw the teacher, before that, benson seemed so much more in control. i wanted to believe it was someone who had just wronged him as a kid, but like you said his panic attack and how it made him completely unravel made me think otherwise :( I hope you don't mind but I have 2 more things i'd love your interpretation on! sorry in advance for how long this is:

did benson's mom call the cops after they left?

benson says "who knows where we'll be 7 hours from now?" at the beginning, which made me think he had no true motive and was going where the day took him and he made everything up as he went along, given that he just snaps at the restaurant and sets this chain off. so with that idea, could it be that canonically, randy is just incidental and it's never really about him? despite benson saying the opposite throughout, do you think randy sorta saw through benson's "i'm doing this for you" motive by the time they were at the diner the second time?

1) I do think she called the cops because it seems way too soon for the cops to have connected Benson to the murders when they show up at her door. I think she intended to call the cops when she asked Randy for the phone, and finally got the motivation or courage to get up and do it at some point after Benson leaves with Randy. Thinking about Ma breaks my heart really, she’s very checked out but that’s still her baby. I wonder if she always thought one day Benson would do something like this because she isn’t shocked to see the blood, more like resigned

2) I think one of my favorite things about the movie is that on your first watch you think it’s just Randy’s movie and everything is about him. When we run into Sheppard it’s like RECORD SCRATCH FREEZE FRAME and you realize the entire time it was equally about both of them ! Benson keeps telling himself what he’s doing is for Randy, but the entire thing is projection. He sees himself in Randy, a person with childhood trauma and holding themselves back from making choices or standing up for themselves. I think it makes him sick thinking about how much it reminds him of his child self, the kid who got hurt because he didn’t stand up for himself, who vowed to never let something like that happen again. Forcing Randy to learn assertiveness and get closure is I think Benson’s attempt at consoling his traumatized inner child. And I think Randy figures this out from Benson’s reaction to Sheppard, and it’s why he tells Benson there was no point to what he’s doing ! Because there wasn’t if the day was actually about Randy! He was doing all of this for himself, not Randy.

“I was never in charge Randy” because he wasn’t! He played at being in charge because it was the only thing getting him through the day, but we spend the day watching a man rocket ship out of control more and more until he breaks down crying in a diner over his coworker/hostage/crush/friend who he can no longer deny having hurt

I watched Maja Ma today and I do this as some form of self inflicted hurt/comfort cause I love me some desi queer people but also AHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGAHHSJSJS

I originally thought the son was gonna be supportive of the mum cause he was from America and maybe more exposed to queer people and accepting attitudes?? Boy was I wrong! I was also surprised that they revealed it so early in the movie and then I realised it was gonna be a forced outing trope and I was SO STRESSED.

I would kill for Pallavi she's wonderful spectacular amazing so sweet and she's such a compelling character!! The trope of queer people planning to run away from their not accepting community but then one staying is definitely a problematic one but also one that I am an absolute sucker for. THE ANGST!!! THE DRAMA!! THE DESPERATION!!! THE HOPE!!! THE FACT THAT YOU WANT TO HATE PALLAVI FOR BREAKING JANAKA'S HEART BUT YOU UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DID IT!!! THE DESPERATE WANT TO FIT IN AND BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!!! Also she's Madhuri Dixit!!! She literally played her so well she CARRIED the whole movie!!

Every other person in the movie annoyed the fuck out of me. I understand that they were supposed to be flawed but jesus Christ I wanted to punch them through the screen. (Apart from maybe the husband he was so funny I loved pallavis reactions to him trying to be romantic she really was like ??????? and also obviously liked Janaka and the fiancée was an absolutely wonderful person she deserves the world and can do way better than fucking bitchass dickface Tejas.) I genuinely started screaming at the son for trying to fucking convert his mum???! Violently as well?????! Your own mother????? I was ready to DICK PUNCH through the screen let me tell you. I hated the daughter so much. Obviously I get that we're supposed to get annoyed at her but god damn bitch was insane!! Loved it when that one queer person was like yeah her and her straight privilege and borrowed outrage can go fuck right off trying to fucking force her mum out of the closet in an extremely traditional society I was like GO OFF KING. TELL IT LIKE IT IS.

And obviously it's asking a bit much from a Bollywood movie to adhere to western views and language used about queer people and I'm taking what I can get really but god damn I hated the way she went about things and I hated that she was portrayed as an angry feminist gender studies person who's making trouble, like Jesus Christ we've had enough of that we don't want the one accepting person to be portrayed like their insane for accepting them??? I don't know what the purpose of her character was supposed to be?? I guess that line about her being more of a social worker than a daughter sums it up

Honestly girl ate with those speeches!!! I loved the bit where she was like yeah I failed the lie detector test cause they were asking the wrong questions. If they'd asked if she ever had fallen in love with a girl, then she'd gladly fail I was literally kicking my feet giggling at this!!

Yeah the way they resolved the conflict was a little bit childish but I got my comfort and I'm glad it wasn't queer sadness!! It was super interesting seeing this type of story from the mother's point of view, cause usually it's the kid coming out and facing these things and I think it added a really nice level of depth and angst about womanhood and being queer in a traditional Indian society. I loved how it had the quintessential Bollywood dance and song scenes I thought they were lovely!! I especially loved the last shot of pallavi and Janaka dancing together in the middle of the circle with the pulsing lights I thought that was so beautiful!!

Honestly overall this movie was messy and did make me want to scream more times than I thought was intended but the cute parts were really cute and pallavi's depth and character and Madhuri Dixit made it a whole lot better!! 6.8/10

it smells like rain outside . the steel poles of the balcony covered in droplets. the concrete floor has a clear sheen to it, and the air feels sharp in your lungs as you inhale. your tights, feel a tad itch on your upper thighs and your dress soft against your skin . the moon isn't yet full but still visible, and there's a dull thud of bass running through your chest from the music inside .

it's beautiful, you think. to be standing here experiencing the world at that given moment in time, and you can't help but wonder how another individual may be experiencing that exact moment . has something life changing happened to them ? are they surrounded by the ones they love or somewhere alone on a balcony in the middle of the city just like you ?a shared experience.

you hear the creak of the sliding down and turn your head to see a map of hair duck down to step outside . once in you instantly connect who that head of hair belongs to accompanied by piercings and a soft smile . long strides taken to where you stand , he places himself next to you , leaning against the railing, and he moves his eyes to the exact spot you're looking at .

" the moon really is beautiful in all of its phases " you can't help but smile at that because he was right , there was something about the incompleteness of how it looked tonight that felt so comforting to you , " why don't you come inside we're about to sing happy birthday to jin? " you didn't mean to step out mid party, but you felt that you needed some fresh air . everything felt a little too much at that moment, but now it feels a bit too much all over again, but that may be because the source of that overwhelming feeling has placed itself next to you.

you take this moment to turn to look at him , with his all black attire and messy hair . he looks so beautiful in the dim lighting and frosty air . he's erethral you think . absolutely stunning . god how you wished you thought about yourself a fraction of how you thought about him .

" you're beautiful, you know" you had to say it . you had to say this and whatever was to come next . you don't know if it was too much of the wine you drank or the feeling of being here but you had to tell him this .

" that wine really got to you , didn't it ? " he laughs lightly , a soft smile playing on his features , " you're beautiful too , you know ?" he responds and your heart falters at that , a small smile on your lips you place your hand against his cheek feeling the warmth or his skin meeting the palm of your hand .

you've felt angry and heartbroken after understanding what you now understand. you've heard about loving someone who doesn't love you back . you've watched it in movies and read it between the pages of books . people you know have told you stories about it, but none of those examples could have prepared you for it .

" I hope you find someone to love one day , jungkook and that they love you just as much because I know you have so much love to give " you can feel your tears drip down you chin leaving a stain on your green satin material . he looks at you with such a pitiful look you feel that you might die.

" and you will find someone as well , I'm so sorry you wasted your love on me when it could have gone to someone who deserved it more than I ever will " just hearing him say that makes you want to succumb to the floor in sobs . you can feel the own shards of your broken heart puncture your lungs, making it hard to breathe a solid breath, but you try to steady yourself.

" you deserved the love I tried to give you , even if you didn't accept it the way I thought you would because jungkook ?"
